This Jamaican-Zimbabwean sister knows how to talk to Africans about sensitive African topics with respect and without patronising them. She's highly intelligent and educated.
We hope she'll also write a book.

The beautiful young Birioti family and our very own Megabush family. This is UA-cam gold! I think every Zim couple just need to work together as King and Queen. If we all understand how important a kingdom is with a King and Queen making executive decisions together then what’s yours is mine and mine is yours because it all goes into building our kingdom. Operative word is OURs and not mine because culturally if an irresponsible man is doing all that with no help he can then have “rights” to chuck the woman out of the kingdom. Thanks for holding such a discussion ❤️

I think this idea of empowerment needs to be further studied, even baboons will observe another baboon when it tries something new before the rest participate Look at the condition of the western family right now and see if that is what we want to emulate...Remember that Eve was made to believe that she lacked. You guys are a beautiful example of what is possible when people love God...someone is even speaking English like a Zimbo.. Beautiful!

Yes, my girl, go deh! Deb, how wonderful to see you responding to Biriot'si wife when she spoke in Shona. Check yuh back a fear from now and yuh a chat like yuh a native, no true?
Re whether you understand Shona, you remarked "I can hear far more than I can speak; I heard her". Wow! In Twi of West Africa (language of the Asantes and other Akans) the word "hear" is used in the same exact sense. Hence, to tell someone "I understand Twi" you would say "Me ti Twi" (literally "I hear Twi"). I love Africa, oh!

After living in the UK for so long I believe men and women should be equal when it come to their family home. I can understand that a man is the Head of the family but that was then. In todays society the woman is expected to take care of the house expenses just like men and this is a good thing because there has been many occasions when only the man was the provider and when he dies the wife finds herself incapable to take over because she has never worked in her life except taking care of the house and the children.
I have witnessed many Zimbabwean and other African's struggling and ending up in a divorce because here they both have to work but the man because he is not use to cleaning and taking care of the children, he finds it hard to adjust and expect the wife to work and take care of everything in the house. I believe some African's culture needs to adapt to the new world. Men in Africa need to learn to take care of the house and children and they need to allow thier wife to work and earn money to support the family. When it comes to polygamy some Men will always have a wondering eyes but at the end of the day it has to a agreement between both parties before introducing one of two other wife. I prefer a man who tells me he wants to marry many wife than a cheating husband.

This is really GOOD ❤🎉 Thanks for doing this important and educational documentary. Some of my students here in the UK are watching it in their human geography classes.
Compatibility and sharing the same VALUES.
Faith is also part of culture. So, sharing the same faith is already sharing parts of culture. The Bible based Christian faith or Muslim faith is not that far from traditional African cultures when it comes to family life and the roles and responsibilities of husband and wife.

Most women become destitute in a good number of African cultures when their husbands die because they don’t learn how to be independent-financially.
Times are changing though, Men (beyond culture)are now opening up to the idea of having a “helper “ to carry burdens with for the family.
I think your marriage is an interesting adventure to navigate what your home ought to look like .❤

    Good afternoon Mega Family.
Deb one thing that makes Jamaican so distinctive is slavery. Let me explain. It is said that when they shipped us from Africa, they dropped the captured persons who were the most independent, warriors, most stubborn, fighting and harder to control in Jamaica. Now, think of what happens when you keep putting approximately 2.5 million persons with all those qualities in one place for 250 years. It defines the people, it creates its own ecosystem. It creates the Jamaican culture. The result is that for the most part, we are forthright, headstrong, proud, stubborn, and independent. The flip side is that we are hard to govern.

Interesting topic ,well for me I would say marrying someone from a different culture can be almost as easy as marrying someone from your own culture when you have the same morals, believe and values. It can get very hard when you have a different religion, although even that can be solved if you are similar in terms of values.

I don’t know how things were in Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa during colonial times in terms of family structures, but I can speak about the family structures of African Americans. During slavery the family structure was very often disrupted. Family members were sold away from each other. So the male head of household could very well have been sold off from his family, or even the females and their children as well. So women had to be very strong and independent to take care of whoever was in their household. Additionally, because they were slaves, men were not seen as a person that the family relied on for financial support.
These very different dynamics had a profound effect on expectations of family structures of enslaved people after slavery was abolished. Our ancestors had to try to create a new family structures based on what they saw that the slave owners had, when they had very little experience with those structures themselves. Many African Americans are still struggling with that because the women were taught and expected to be able to hold everything down with or without a man.
I don’t know if it was like that in Africa during colonial times but based on the conversation in the video, it seems like they had a very different experiences there. Maybe their families were not broken up as much as they were in the United States, so they were able to hold onto those older, traditional roles. I don’t know, but I’m just speculating.

    • @TheMegabushFamily
      @TheMegabushFamily  19 днів тому +1

Wow, thank you for this thorough share! This is very very similar to our experience in Jamaica. Though colonized, they never really had this dynamic in Africa, and they managed to keep their traditional mostly roles intact.
