Everything about this game was perfect--the blocked hits that still caused damage, the perfectly timed death touches, the reactions to getting hit according to different strength attacks, the change from close-up to widescreen, everything.
Man I used to absolutely love watching the demo modes of these games. I wasnt allowed to play games with martial arts in them when I was a kid cause my parents are religious fanatics and felt that martial arts had too much to do with eastern religions. It was so tantalizing seeing the demo mode and seeing how fun it looked, it really sucked knowing I would get in big trouble if I played games like this.
When I was 12, I'd cycle over to the local golf club and this was in the bar next to a few other games. It was damn hard at first but I eventually got the hang of it. The young guy who worked at the bar would play and finish it, I was so jealous lol.
Damn!, This game has class! Massive characters, the zooming effect adds huge impact & a solid feel.. the sound is some of the best ive ever heard. For me this totally blows street fighter 2 out of the water. I did find the difficulty over the top though
One of the games I played a lot on my phone during the turmoil of Hurricane Maria back in 2017. I even gave a comprehensive review of it in a G+. Loved the grimy late 70's setting (Even though Robert had an 80's Ferrari, lol), the attention to detail in the sprites, that OST and the things it established for the FG genre, like intro animations, camera zoom, meter management, taunts and the super move
still find it hard to beat this game. even doing simple fire ball is hard cause the build up takes so long. I remember paying .20c per credit. ahh the 90s
I remember back when i was little my dad would take me with him on the bus to the laundromat since we didn’t have a washing machine at home and if he had enough quarters after his wash he would spare me a couple to play on this Neo Geo machine which had Metal Slug (my personal favorite), Art of Fighting, and Puzzle Bobble. I really appreciate the memories these games bring
@ Not really at all. There are similarities but that's where it stops. This is more Street Fighter+Final Fight, but done in an SNK fashion. And that's why it's cool.
That and I also think it was made as a partial parody to the Street Fighter series (which I don't see bad at all, because I actually enjoy it). Ryo and Robert have many similarities with Ryu and Ken. Even certain techniques (especially that flying uppercut they use in the KOFs) are basically ripoffs from some of them.
Mr. Karate would make a Great lead character for a Prequel to Art of Fighting; in my honest opinion; I think that Takuma Sakazaki was 'Mr. Karate' in the SNK Arcade game: "Street Smart" where he toured America while prize fighting along with his Pro Wrestler buddy....Too Bad Takuma/Mr. Karate is often overlooked as a character; Takuma's alter ego would also make a great Vigilante story
I had the Japanese cartdrige for the SNES I didn't get a clue what were they saying lol It was fun also how Yuri who was a defenseless silly girl became the strong tomboy she is in AoF2 xD Lee and John were my mains! Loved 'em! It was also terrific the cameras zoom, how their face became disfigured as the fight was going and not to mention the brilliant OST!
Played this today and finished it on easy. I don't know how people can have the patience to get good at it because it's so awkward and ridiculous. I swear to God, I did Ryo's uppercut move on Mickey and it connected but Mickey instantly recovered and uppercutted me before I could even recover from my own dang uppercut! My mouth was agape. Another difference between this game and SFII is that in SFII if one character is faster and they both throw a projectile the projectiles will collide, but in AoF you'll be hit from across the stage before you even finish your animation. I can only beat this game by being cheap as heck.
Is this really the complete ending of the game? On the SNES port the ending was much longer. I always thought on NG it was shortened on easy difficulty settings, but whatever video I watch it's always just like this one.
I hated the controls in this game, especially coming from Street Fighter 2. Yes the sprites and graphics are beautiful, it was a pleasure to look at, but compared to Street fighter 2, the controls were stiff and rigid. Awesome playthrough 💪🏾
Yep the controls keep this from being as loved as Street Fighter 2 when its cooler on every level. I wonder why they havent tweaked this game to perfection over the years
WAIT! Who's the man? I have to know! They can't end it like that! No seriously, I know. I've never beaten the first game in the Arcade though, so I never knew it ended like that.
@MaverickZero360 sorry if I answer your question after 4 years, if you follow the arcade version, the answer is at Art of Fighting 2 Intro. If you want to know more ending from Art of Fighting 1, you can see ending on SNES version.
They expect me to beat this with one credit and to score 300,000 points. I can't beat Mr Karate atm Then I just got a Perfect. Then lost. Then got another Perfect on the rubber match... wow, believing in yourself actually works, even if the finishing move was a tiny toe kick
Snk was ahead of street fighter they invented the super move the had better sprite work. Also they had akuma before he existed capcom were your apology.
The visuals are hugely impressive for 1991. Too bad the controls are extremely stiff, and the cpu difficulty is ridiculous even on the easiest setting. Love the soundtrack and the fact that damage is visible, wish more games implemented this, thought that would have been a universal feature by now.
I think you gotta beat Karate Gym with Ryu first and then start another campaign with Robert. I didn't try that yet but Maybe. I got that hint from a playsyation game called soul of samurai where you get to do the Gabe with both characters
I like the art of fighting first time completing it today. But it wasn’t a fun game. I learned the moves and found they were more of a hindrance (apart from the fireball) and it was better to fly kick more then anything. I spent the better part of an hour trying to complete on easy because of the fuckary with the last boss. Good looking characters. Awesome stages but close to super street fighter 2 turbo unplayable. While done completing it though.
I'll admit that this is a fun game to watch... but not very fun to play. My main problem is the controls... they are really stiff, also makes it difficult to pull off special moves. Not huge on the fact that the characters also have spirit energy that can be drained by special moves either.
I think the spirit energy was really innovative. It was the perfect answer to players spamming projectiles and made the gameplay that much more complex. That's what I enjoyed about the SNK fighters, the gameplay was always more complex than meets the eye. It shuts out a certain fanbase, but really once you master the controls, the experience is much more satisfying than Capcom games. That's just my opinion though.
I am totally with you. The gameplay was and IS great! This was the most memorable arcade 1:1 fighting for me. Even after the release of the original Mortal Kombat, - Art of Fighting always felt like a tough guy's game, something that you'd have to DARE to play, if you understand me. Not only that i wasn't the only sucker to buy into this rumor, but it was a hell of a motivation too :-)
The gameplay was slow and feels really heavy, that's why this game is not good at all because of gameplay. Art of Fighting 2 is a bit better and 3 is by far, really by far much better. Art of Fighting is not a good game at all and not because is an old game, because I feel Street Fighter II more fluid than this one, was because of all the things that they want to have for the game: Special Moves by Energy Bar, Super Special Moves, Desesperations Moves when Life Bar is in low, see the damage of the fighters when they got hurt and yes, the details and innotations(Like Desesperation Moves) were really awesome but all of those were so much resources and can affect to the gameplay. About like or not like this game, even critics knows that "for tastes, colors", and personally I like it, but not because of that I'm not going to recognize their faults.
@BPKDLH07 i prefer Art of Fighting than Street Fighter II. SF II was easy when i was still very young (10y+), i ended sf Ii hardest level arcade in first tried but not Art of Fighting.hardest level arcade. I still needed to learn opponent movement again and again until i can defeated Art of Fighting hardest level game. Player vs Player, I still prefer Art of Fighting, more challenging with many character choice by players, but not SF II. Ppl always used Ryu, Ken, Guile, and sometimes Blank or Dhalsim. Next SF II edition, only M.Bison was favourite new char added by players on my country.
Everything about this game was perfect--the blocked hits that still caused damage, the perfectly timed death touches, the reactions to getting hit according to different strength attacks, the change from close-up to widescreen, everything.
I love it how in South Town everyone is so hostile, immediately getting straight into the fight.
If you went downtown with a karate gi people would want to fight you, too!
No nonsense town

Game epic, characters, music, scenary is perfect...still look in 2019
Used to play it when I was 10. Now I'm 33, and still in love with it.
Same! 33 myself
Man, I remember what a complete and total pain in the ass Mr. Karate was.
Once you learned to keep baiting him into the Zanretsuken, he became cake,
At least Akuma will accept the fact that he's being defeated by you if you're doing well but Mr Karate he is straight up cheat if he's losing
@@BlackPopeye44 yep I was fighting him last night and noticed that
I lost more matches against Mr. Karate than Akuma in Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
Sakazaki sensei is no pushover.
Ofcourse, because you dont get Akuma every time like you get Takuma in this game.
At least Akuma will accept the fact that he's being defeated by you if you're doing well but Mr Karate he is straight up cheat if he's losing
Janette Fujiwara Geese Howard is worse.
The controls are the real opponent
Damn!, This game has class! Massive characters, the zooming effect adds huge impact & a solid feel.. the sound is some of the best ive ever heard. For me this totally blows street fighter 2 out of the water. I did find the difficulty over the top though
@M L The controls is what makes SF 2 better. If this controlled well t would easily have been the go to game at that time
Ryo makes Karate look badass
One of the games I played a lot on my phone during the turmoil of Hurricane Maria back in 2017. I even gave a comprehensive review of it in a G+. "Ask for it with your power" equals "say it with your chest" in 2018
one of the first and only games for a while to use z-scale zoom. I remember it well.
SNK, Art of Fighting 30th Anniversary since 1992.
still find it hard to beat this game. even doing simple fire ball is hard cause the build up takes so long. I remember paying .20c per credit. ahh the 90s

King the 1st female fighter in the SNK franchise.
But her games weren't fighting games, the guy literally said the first female fighter.
9:09
No, King isn't a women,is a man. Didn't you know it?
@@juanbadilla2232 Huh? King is a woman.
The Sound Effect makes this Game even Doper!!
Marco Varguez I agree
one of the best fighting game ever

Eric Tagne Fatal Fury is better.
@ AOF was created by the same team that made the original Street Fighter...
@ next joke please
incredible epic bad ass game, and even more epic soundtrack
still looks good in 2017....wow
No reason why not, - arcade games are built forever.
Once you lived through that, no modern whirlygigs can beat it.
-So Ryo, King, how did you two meet?
-Uh....
Todo and Ryo's Theme Art of Fight's in Smash Ultimate.
8:57
That taunt just had to come out at the right time
6:53 Ryo's face is looks beaten so badly
this game screams 80's cheesiness.
this game is from 1992
Bob Bobby
the setting is early 80's though
+journeymanX 80's cheesiness was this game's fuel. This whole game was inspired by over the top martial arts flicks.
The guy who made SF created this game and designed Ryo. I wouldn't call it a rip off if its made by the same person.

Art of Fighting is a prequel to Fatal Fury, so I doubt they'd want to make a prequel to a prequel, lol.
So then there doesn't need to be a prequel to AOF, seeing as Street Smart is the true prequel to this series lol
I had the Japanese cartdrige for the SNES I didn't get a clue what were they saying lol
It was fun also how Yuri who was a defenseless silly girl became the strong tomboy she is in AoF2 xD
Lee and John were my mains! Loved 'em!
It was also terrific the cameras zoom, how their face became disfigured as the fight was going and not to mention the brilliant OST!
Thank you for going out of your way to get the special ending with King lol
Man, Mickey has skipped numerous leg-days.
That intro and music is fire 🔥 if it was a movie I definitely watch!
Art of fighting is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING and AMAZING arcade game 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I love this game's presentation. Really cool.
This is the few case when the final boss of the game is not a villain. Actually the main villain is Mr. Big, a sub boss.
I kind of remember Super Nintendo the version I owned.... made all that trouble you went through with karate more rewarding
Muito bom gostei de ver esse jogo.lembrei quando eu tinha 16 anos e jogava esse jogo the king of fighit lá nos anos 90s👍
the art of fighting arcade game's is the best most for me ever;-)

The game that started the King of Fighters arcs.
that was some good stuff!..brings back good memories
I wonder why at a final it ended with an encrypted message "to be continued"
Because of, well, Geese and the other shit from AOF2.
Man Mr Big is a pushover
im not fatal fury fans, but i love the art of fighting arcade games! that's all;-)
Did anyone also love the background music? SNK always make a better music than Capcom
does any agree that mr karate was harder than mr big, mr karate kills you in one second than Mr big
first round with "?" was fuckin brutal

Fun Fact: Ryo was model after Patrick Swayze.
Un clasico en la infancia que recuedos buen video
I fucking hate and love this game during the 90’s ughh
What’s nuts is the first fighter barely touched Ryo and Ryos cheeks swelled up.
Mr. Karate, the boss of the game is Ryo's palette swap.
