Some facts: 1) Turbo granny is a modern yokai ("ghost") that appears in Japanese urban legends. The urban legend of the Turbo granny is that when you're driving through a tunnel, someone suddenly taps on your car window, and when you look out the window, you see an old woman running alongside your car. Basically, turbo granny are considered harmless. There are various theories about the Turbo granny, but it is said that she chases after you at speeds of 100 to 140 km/h. That same grandma exists in this show, Persona 2, and Mob Psycho 100. 2) 5:00 - Ken Takakura was an old Japanese actor and a singer, if that wasn't clear; like he was (he's dead) a real-ass person. His IMDB page says he was known as "the Clint Eastwood of Japan". When Momo is walking down the school hallway, the background music is in the style of what he sang (5:15). He's old school, he was very active from the 60s to the 80s, more or less. 3) 5:00 - The makeup done by Momo's friend is actually part of the Manba Gyaru subculture (or Ganguro???). There are many subcultures withing the gyaru fashion, with girls like Marin or Momo being on one end and the friend being on the extreme opposite end (9:30 - She's Gyaru, that's why her skirt is so short. Also, if you pay attention to her socks, they are somewhat "baggy" - another clothing that gyaru usually wear. At least in that era). Think of it as “rebellion against traditional Japanese beauty standards". It's also heavily associated with the era, and Manba Gyaru is almost extinct nowadays.
I was going to mention something about that third point... I'm glad you did! another thing that I think a lot of gyaru do is either emulating school uniforms with their outfits, or altering their actual school uniforms, in a way that would intentionally shirk the dress code as an act of rebellion. while looks like Marin's or Momo's are pretty much in line with modern beauty standards, they're intentionally risque because a lot of Japanese traditionalists value demure modesty over the kind of loud statement pieces of modern street fashion. and manbu gyaru takes this to an even further, more cutesy/intentionally gaudy/hyper feminine extreme. to me, it always seemed akin to something drag-esque... not that the two movements actually have a link to one another, but in the sense that both are such an extreme, over the top display of aesthetic that the looks are more akin to art pieces.
Ken Takakura is a Japanese actor who she has a crush on (yes hes real) and just so happens this kid has the same name which makes it just as shocking as she was lol.

This will be your first reaction to an anime by this animation studio! Dandadan is being animated Science Saru, which is a pretty well respected studio known for their very creative and unique animation style! Also, the creator of the manga is Yukinobu Tatsu, who actually worked on the Chainsaw Man manga as an assistant before which could explain the similarities you felt! Last thing for some context, Ken Takakura is a very popular actor in Japan known for playing a lot of tough-guy roles. Momo's boyfriend in the first scene looks similar to Ken, which is the only reason she was dating him. "Occult-kun" doesn't look or act like Ken at all, but he says, "I'm an awkward fellow, after all," which is a famous Ken line. So when he says that line paired with Momo learning he coincidentally is also named Ken Takakura she ends up so caught off guard.
9:00 - Otaku is someone who's obsessed with something. Military Otaku - everything that has to do with Military, Mecha Otaku - everything that has do to mechas (giant robots), Anime Otaku - someone who's REALLY into anime. In the western world, otaku = anime fan. 14:33 - The moon here, and the moon when Momo was abducted, have different color. 17:30 - She simply wanted to protect him from bullying.
I actually caught up with the entire manga for this in a weekend recently... could've been a day, but I began with unfortunate timing and had to sleep at some point. the manga really is just that good, like, you don't _want_ to stop reading it. I friggin love Momo. what an introduction. dates a guy who is absolute trash just because he looks like an old timey film actor that she's obsessed with, then tries to kick the crap out of trash boy when he predictably sucks, even though she really can't back up the shit she started, then calls him various sea creatures as an insult purely because she's weird. and then she intervenes, on impulse, when she sees Okarun getting bullied while not at all understanding how much more she's about to commit to... Momo is very act-first-think-later, sometimes to her detriment, sometimes to her benefit. I also love Okarun, because he is a kid after my own heart. I also hyperfixate on nerd shit and get really annoying about one topic for a very long time! but seriously, I love that he's clearly a quiet kid, but he's got a LOT to say as soon as there's anyone around for him to say it to. and while his self deprecating tendency is its own kind of problem, he never blames anyone else for his struggles... he's just grateful when he doesn't have to struggle alone anymore. so yeah... please forgive the initial um... stuff. there is a lot of very un-wholesome shit going on around these characters, but the characters themselves are very sweet, and I adore them. like, at the end there, it's not even that Momo is ready to jump his bones or anything, she's just realizing that he shares a name, and maybe a mannerism or two, with that actor she's obsessed with, and she doesn't know how to deal with the added layer of _something_ that this brings to the table. I mean, trash boy from the opening scene was her first boyfriend ever, so it's not like she's actually experienced or anything. these two are in waaaaay over their heads, it's just unfortunate that these are the problems they're dealing with. NOTES: in my opinion, I don't think Momo was saying "how lame" about the bullies because she hoped they would throw something... I think she just thinks it's lame to pick on people in general, and it's especially spineless when she can intimidate them so easily. if they're gonna wimp out as soon as they know someone's watching, maybe they shouldn't have done any of that crap to begin with. spot on about Okarun's assumption though... his logic is that someone pretty and stylish like Momo wouldn't normally swoop in and save him from bullying, so she must've had some kind of specific reason to want to talk to him. and that's when he makes the assumption that she was actually interested in the topic of his paranormal book. oh! and yeah, "otaku" is a word that is typically used to describe people who have an obsession with something... similar to the term "geek" because like... you can be a geek for anything. computers, comics, model planes... you name it. (though there are some categories of geek that are seen as more stereotypical, and being an anime otaku is one of those typical associations.) also, in Japan, the term "otaku" can sometimes have very negative connotations, especially when referring to someone who is old enough to be an adult, and hasn't grown out of these tendencies. one last note... when the serpoians say they want someone's "banana" they're using that term as a broad category. in the manga, it was translated as "banana organs" which feels more appropriately vague to me... though they do specify that it's only female humans that they're after, since their species is made up of exclusively male clones with zero biodiversity. sucks for them that the girl they caught manifested psychic powers strong enough to tear their whole ship apart, but hey, that's what you get when you try to force Momo to do anything.
@@timujin it's real easy to not know Otaku there's a big difference between what someone like me in NY calls an Otaku and how it's used in Japan it's like Polish and Polish one is how you make wood shiny and the other is an EU language.

Ken Takakura is a real Japanese Actor from older Japanese films. A good comparison would be a girl saying she loves Stanley Baker, liked guys who looked like him in his earlier films, then met a boy that tried to save her and then quoted offhandedly and accidently some lines from one of her favorite films that had Stanley that most people would not know, and then she learns that he is also named Stanley Baker.
The source of the occult magazine is the Japanese monthly magazine Gakken Mu. It is the strongest magazine that covers all kinds of mysteries and taboos, and has never been forced to close down even if it writes articles about anything, such as the Jewish issue or the Imperial family.
YEEEESS!!! Thank you Luke for watching this anime with us, it's a little weird, but it's damn good, it's great because you're going to watch Mob Psycho 100, soon you will figure out why it's a good timing 😅
The dub for this is freaking amazing too. Also Turbo Granny's japanese VA is Luffy from One Piece, and her English VA is Rita Repulsa from power rangers.
I seriously cannot believe that this anime would pick my interest so strongly.😂 I watched the first episode of this anime together with You and OH my word I loved it!❤ Favorite moment? 25:15 Beast came from smartphone and started rampage around aliens.🤣 Great reaction!😃
I’m a scientist so when it comes to these matters I’m most definitely a skeptic. I have had one experience which I cannot explain, me and two friends both saw it and we talk about it to this day. A huge, what looked like a triangular shaped aircraft went at high speed and stopped IMMEDIATELY. Then it stayed there for about 20 seconds, then zoomed off in a different direction; there was zero noise or light from any propulsion and the way it moved was like how a fly can manoeuvre. Either an aircraft that should be at least 50 years away, or something else. It amazes me we had that experience, because I’m a massive skeptic too but I just can’t explain this one 😅
So in essence you saw Bigfoot but you don't believe in Bigfoot . Hey, I'm right there with you ! If I saw a Jackalope I I'd be skeptical about them existing too. 🙄
@@timujin Yea it’s a massive contradiction in my mind, I believe there is alien life out there; the universe is too big for there not to be. It’s just the travelling here I can’t see happening, there are too many funky things that happen if you try to go faster than light…even if you somehow get close to the speed of light, it would still take many years even for the closest star with an “earth like planet” 🤣 There is a part of me that wants them to be real, I want them to make proper and public contact 👽 It would be amazing! 😆
Guys, let's be real. In every group of men there are a pair of friends who happily would said yes to the turbo granny... I simply don't want to be judged...
Science SARU is probably one of my favorite animation studios. Everything they do is incredible artistically. Tale of the Heike was probably one of the most beautiful anime I ever watched.
The author of Chainsaw Man had some assistance, after they finished working with Fujimoto, they've made some small mangas you might know: Hell's Paradise (Yuji Kaku), Spy x Family (Tatsuya Endo), Dandadan (Yukinobu Tatsu)
😂😂nice reaction!! I even shecked if this was tanjiro s voice actor bc i was shooked hearing the voice and ofc u would notice it too i knew it😭 This anime is so weird but i already love it and ur reaction😂
there will be 12 episodes in total for season one, but you never know, we might get second season announcement with the release of the last episode like with many other anime. Studio that makes it is called Science SARU, but the line up of producers is next level. They have guys from Zom100, Kaguya-sama Love is war, or Tsukumichi: Moonlit fantasy. This is some stacked line up. The VA of Momo voiced Nanahoshi in Mushoku tensei
So I said it on Patreon - but Ken Takakura was a famous Japanese actor. Among other things he was known for being handsome. Obviously the VA for Ken here is the same as Tanjiro and I know the VA for the girl here from Lycoris Recoil.
If I had only known the anime with this first episode, I would also say that it was excellent and will be the anime of the season... But since I read the manga I can assure you that this wonder will be the anime of the year and even of the decade!!! !
so, after watching the first episode, I decided to read the manga and thought I will read ten to twenty chapters, but nope! 130 chapters and still counting

22:23 really funny thing is that Granny is voiced by va of Luffy and aliens are voiced by va of Zoro from one piece.
"is this a Sus anime?"
Luke the author was chainsawman manga assisstant
The source of the occult magazine is the Japanese monthly magazine Gakken Mu. It is the strongest magazine that covers all kinds of mysteries and taboos, and has never been forced to close down even if it writes articles about anything, such as the Jewish issue or the Imperial family.
Turbo granny va is Luffy, serpo alien va is zoro
YEEEESS!!! Thank you Luke for watching this anime with us, it's a little weird, but it's damn good, it's great because you're going to watch Mob Psycho 100, soon you will figure out why it's a good timing 😅
This anime is so wild and cool in one time
His VA really is Tanjiro's VA
Bro's facial expressions in the second part of the episode be like: 😀😐😩😮
Didn't expect you to pick this one up immediately but I'm glad you did, Dandadan is great and just keeps getting better
19:02 He’s looking at us like we said it 😭
nice profile pic lmao
@@infamousshinkicker6924 niceeee
19:37 "Now Hear me out" 😅😅
Meanwhile Me:"Is Luke about to defend a supernatural no-teeth BJ?"😅😅😅
😂😂
Let's hear him out
The dub for this is freaking amazing too.
So funny as hell! I want to see you react to it when you are not sick.
Ken Takakura is the famous actor who act an inspector in the movie "Black Rain".
I need the Ep 2 Reaction right now 🙏🙏
Humor and dialog is just the best in this show. Love it so much.
Dandadan peak fiction 🗣️🗣️🔥🔥
The magazine he is reading is called Super Mystery Magazine MU, which releases monthly. Sadly there is no English version
Hope you feel better soon man. Great reaction.
It’s just the travelling here I can’t see happening, there are too many funky things that happen if you try to go faster than light…even if you somehow get close to the speed of light, it would still take many years even for the closest star with an “earth like planet” 🤣
There is a part of me that wants them to be real, I want them to make proper and public contact 👽
It would be amazing! 😆
A close relative of the Turbo Granny is the Jumping Granny, which only exists in Nagoya, Japan.
Amazing anime and great reaction. I read all the source material available right know and i can tell you this will be soooo good
1:51 Dandadan was actually written by one of Chainsaw Man's author previous assistants! (Although that's true for Spy x family too ahah)
And also true for Hell's Paradise and Centuria
@@RenderingUser yep, ahah all bangers
Guys, let's be real. In every group of men there are a pair of friends who happily would said yes to the turbo granny... I simply don't want to be judged...
😂
Reminds me of that elf from inter species reviewers
@@ragg232 😂😂😂😂
Great reaction!
18:55 That face 😂😱
22:14 That face 🤣😱
3:20 no it was actually science saru who made this anime.
Momo's va also voiced Nanahoshi from Mushoku Tensei. She's the girl that got teleport from Japan
That Banana Alien is based on Dada Seijin from Ultraman series
Science SARU is probably one of my favorite animation studios. Everything they do is incredible artistically. Tale of the Heike was probably one of the most beautiful anime I ever watched.
Dude the second anime is great the guys form qnd artstyle looks amazing
I'm so happy you watch it !!
I even shecked if this was tanjiro s voice actor bc i was shooked hearing the voice and ofc u would notice it too i knew it😭
This anime is so weird but i already love it and ur reaction😂
FLCL or Fooly Cooly is also and pretty crazy anime from 2000-2001 with a cool art style you may check out if you like Dan Da Dan.
3:25 its Science Saru, they did Devil man cry baby, ping pong the animation and many others.
This is amazing.
If you see the episode again you will enjoy more. That is my advice for everyone who see this for the first time
there will be 12 episodes in total for season one, but you never know, we might get second season announcement with the release of the last episode like with many other anime.
So yeah, Takakura Ken is "Clint Eastwood but Japanese" in simple terms, and the guy in the beggining did look like him a little bit (only his looks).
Damn, if you love school delinquent/bad boys theme, you should watch GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka). Such a great show!
Welp. Looks like I am watching Dan Da Dan now.
I wasn't sure if I was going to check it out before.
I always have to lower my volume a bit when watching you, this is not a critique. It's how I remember you XD... I like the hair btw😊
The show gives me a lot of Gantz vibes, at least in terms of the alien and ghost designs and aesthetics.
there's an anime called Nurarihyon no mago, it's about yokai. i haven't seen it yet, but i remember someone talked about it 10 years ago
Damn I missed it 😂
29:27 LMAOO
"Also, her thumb looks like a giant toe."
LMAO
Dandadan!!!
That is Tanjiro
It's Crazy Good and it will be even Crazier! :D
So I said it on Patreon - but Ken Takakura was a famous Japanese actor. Among other things he was known for being handsome.
Obviously the VA for Ken here is the same as Tanjiro and I know the VA for the girl here from Lycoris Recoil.
Random fun fact: Creepy nuts appear and help the protagonists in the last arc of the manga
Yes pls we need this weekly
So, to sum up this episode, in the words of Rob Zombie, "Well, everybody, everybody, everybody/ Everbody's fucking in a U.F.O."
Yeyyy!! Dandadannnn ✨
By the way, the cat from outers space made by disney is my guilty pleasure go to.
If I had only known the anime with this first episode, I would also say that it was excellent and will be the anime of the season... But since I read the manga I can assure you that this wonder will be the anime of the year and even of the decade!!! !
Dandadan is crazy, you will enjoy it a lot!!!
Yeahhhh I love this anime
you NEED to react to Sniper's Dream
Serupo: Give me banana !!
Banana = Baby ?
Not quite they refer to reproductive organs as bananas for that for some reason..
@@isaacdayton4962 banana = reproductive organs?
...interresting, Understood.🤔
YEEAAAH LESGOOO
now react to Blue Box please
As a manga reader, let me say it only gets crazier and better from here
so, after watching the first episode, I decided to read the manga and thought I will read ten to twenty chapters, but nope! 130 chapters and still counting
