Shark tooth hunting in Venice Florida + bonus snorkeling. What to expect visiting Caspersen Beach.

- This was our first attempt to go hunting for shark teeth in Venice, Florida. We decided to visit Caspersen Beach, which came recommended from someone who watches my channel (thank you!). I'll show you the tools we brought, how we found the teeth and what else you can expect if you want to go hunting for teeth at Caspersen.
We parked at: 4100 Harbor Drive, Venice, FL 34285
Love the video. My favorite place to hunt for shark teeth is Manasota Key. There are three beach areas there and we always find good teeth. FYI...some of those “rocks” aren’t rocks. They are fossils, but not sure exactly what kind. I think one of them was a fossilized horse tooth and some may be fossilized whale bone. I used to have a book of fossils you can find on the beach, but I can’t locate it at the moment. So, don’t throw those away. They are still very cool! Can’t wait for your next video!
Good thing my husband is so into rocks! I'm picking up shells and he's running around looking for hag stones and whatnot. We probably still have those pieces! It was so much fun to try something new and now we have all the tools we need if we decide to do it again - which we probably will. Yes, when I was shark tooth hunting near Venice yrs ago; along with teeth, I found some of those strange brown "rocks" that almost looked like fossilized bone or something. I used them in art pieces. I also found a strange ridged fossil-like piece that from a shark tooth/fossil book I bought, I discovered it was a ray mouth plate, really cool! Some fun hunting on those beaches.

Those teeth were a great find!! I wonder why you find more at that beach. I loved the fact that your hubby made a necklace right away. Your strainer was a great one for the job. I bet people would love one of those for shifting shells.
That was so cool!! That would be a great day beach for families because you don’t have to pay for parking and the water is nice and calm and they have bathrooms, which is always great when you have small kids.

I visited Caspersen Beach in January. I love this beach. We found a lot of different treasures here.

My grandparents moved to Venice in 1961 and collect hundreds of teeth over the years. Collecting isn't what it used to be. Love your videos.

The long black pieces are Stingray barbs and /or Stingray teeth or palate. The others ones were def shark teeth. Just went to this beach yesterday! Thanks for the tips for the next trip!

We were lucky it was a pretty calm day. And yes - that sand was much darker than we're used to down here in SWFL!
I lived in Venice for 12 yrs and use to go to Caspersen beach daily when the beach was much wider, so sad that it has diminished. I have jugs filled with sharks teeth and others with shells, so much so that before we left the area mu husband made me take back tons of shells.
You used to get to go to the beach daily? Amazing! I would have tons of teeth and shells too! I've already brought some of my shells back to the beach for "recycling." I will often chat with other shellers on the beach and I find great joy in giving away the shells they happen to be looking for. Thanks so much for sharing AND watching my video!

SWF Beach Life most of the people down at Manasota we’re hunting sharks teeth. I was able to find other cool shells there 😉🐚
Don't know if anyone has mentioned a UA-camr named PaleoCris or not, but, he also lives in Florida. He has a degree in paleontology, I think. He used to work for a museum and he is very knowledgeable about fossils and all the various types of sharks teeth. He has other adventures on some of his videos such as searching for gem stones and other fossils, but, he has alot on sharks teeth.

I also found a similar land snail 🐌 shell on our trip in Naples a few weeks ago...I found it in the parking lot of a seafood restaurant!

When I looked for shark's teeth, a really fine mesh screen colander worked great.
You'd need SOMETHING to sift through the sand and what not. A mesh colander sounds like a splendid idea!
I live in Venice, we are 4 miles from this beach. My husband and I love tooth and shell hunting and snorkeling on Caspersen. We walk much further south of the parking, but be aware if you come back and venture that way...there are nude sunbathers the further you go out.
Bwha ha ha! We will consider ourselves warned! Are there any other good places to snorkel other than those rock jettys?

Looks like all the black pieces you found are fossils, bones, etc. perhaps even a piece of a fossil alligator tooth (the rounded piece in the tooth corner of your tray)...interesting prehistoric finds; thanks for sharing. I believe your big barnacle is possibly a fossil too...A lot of little teeth might be too small for that mesh size...also, you might familiarize yourself with what mantra Ray teeth plate fossils look like...I bet that beach has lots of those, and they are very easy to spot. I go fossil hunting, but I just surface beachcomb...but places I go along the east coast aren't as crowded as your beach, so the sifter makes good sense then
Since making this video I have learned what a ray teeth plate looks like 🤗 I actually feel like I learn something new all the time! This is THE SPOT to look for shark's teeth, so I assume anyone who's hunting for them will show up here. Our crowds are seasonal over here, so at least it's nice and quiet in the summer!

I think the land snail is a Cuban brown snail. I remember randomly finding one in my apartment and having no idea what it was lol
You are right! I've learned a bunch since back then and I continue to find those cuban brown snails every now and then.

I know this us an older video but just happened to see it. We live in Venice, moved here May 2020 Love this beach for shark teeth and shells but we walk further south

BUMMER! I highly recommend some sort of scoop and something to (like a floating grate) look at what you're scooping. I have to believe it will be so much easier that way. Good luck!

I would be guessing, but it looks like some sort of soft coral. There is a rather nasty coral called, Fire Coral, that is quite painful when touched, but I don't think that's what it is. I wish it had been just a little clearer. I snorkeled down in the Keys and I can't wait to share that too!

you inspired me to go to sanibel! unfortunately, i was shocked that we didn’t find any of the shells you show :///. we went on a monday morning and arrived at about 6:30am. any idea where al the shells were?
karis Which beach did you visit? The shelling has definitely been “slow” lately. I went to Sanibel 2 weekends ago and found some shells, but nothing like it had been a few months ago. And...we walk like 6 miles (3 miles each way) so I think we increase our chances by sheer distance alone!
SWF Beach Life i’ll remember that for next time! i went to turner beach and bowman’s beach. bowman’s was okay but turner was practically barren! also, in case you were unaware, they closed all the public beaches on sanibel so my options were limited
@@karis2298 UGH! Some beaches on Sanibel are County Beaches and some are run by Sanibel. I'll be sure to check before I head back over there. Bummer you didn't find many shells :(
Wow you did great finding the sharks teeth. Are all sharks teeth black? Or just in the water in the gulf? Thanks for sharing!
I'm not really sure! Most of the ones I see people find are black, but I guess there could be other colors if the teeth are newly lost. Since this was our first time we're just learning!
Fossilized teeth are dark.
I never sifted I usually just find sharks teeth on the beach

Nice video! Have you ever been to fort Walton beach ? Do they have good shells ? My family are planning to go there next year :)
I have not been to Fort Walton Beach, but I do know some of the beaches in the panhandle are good for finding shells. One day I'd like to take a trip up there and check it our for myself.

Yes! We are here now.(ft. Walton). We've found many average common shells, but also nice olives, Florida cones, Fighting conchs, 3 Alphabet cones, ceriths, augers, shark eyes, cochinos, purple barnacles, a very few sand dollars, scallops, 3 baby's ears, many sizes of bittersweet(some attached, both sides open with nobody home).
The ones you said they could beshark teeth someone told me and I remember they all stink ray spines

Did your husband use a diamond bit to drill the tooth?
Yes he sure did! He said to be careful because the bit can get very hot!

We had just researched the statistics of shark attacks in Florida and it was really low, so we figured we're safe.
