    As a Hyundai driver I never thought I'd say this but I'm actually considering buying the first model DS4. It's just a great looking car with a lot of value for your money, especially when you buy a used one. Also you rarely see it on the road so you will have a quite unique vehicle.

    As a Citroen owner and lover it is a great pleasure to be reading all those negative comments. The big picture is being missed here. First of all, Citroen/DS never wanted to be understood or appreciated. The car is French - it is arrogant, it doesn't care about the billions of foolish comments about the rear windows (like who gives a damn, you are riding an awesome French lady, man) and it shouts wilderness. Thank God, Citroen is unordinary. The car is not tempted by "correctness" of shapes or whatever from other brands. Yes, the rear windows don't open & yes, you can't find the "correct" rear visibility. It is like that. We can see the hate for that, but it is obvious - Citroen/DS doesn't care. At the end of the day most will turn their eyes on this car or will respect it for being that different lad from the class. Citroen cares for itself. At the begining of the party Astras, Golfs, 1s, A3s will sweat to dominate the field. But all of them will go home early with the ugly-to-average girls. Citroen/DS stays until the end to grab and fuck the beautiful chicks in the acoustic and "claustrophobic" rear seats. And chicks adore it. This is why Citroen spirit is adored. Remember - the original DS was not accepted hugely outside of France at the time as well. Any fucks given for that? Hell no. Citroen did their own thing. It's the same story today. Merci beaucoup, Citroen/DS - you don't care about the rest once more. Finally.

      I have driven Peugeots and Fiats since 1974 and my first Citroen was a ZX Volcane in 1994. After the ZX I have had an AX, Berlingo, XM and now a DS4 with watch-strapped seats. Love this brand and personally I would prefer the Citroen name in it. After 4 plus years I still enjoy my DS4 especially on the long cruises. No issues except that it consumes oil (1 litre per 10,000 kms) if I hit the high notes consistently. Odo reads 120,000 kms.

      Same here, bro. 1 year later - 40000kms under the bonnet. Flat out enjoyment and average consumption of 5.8l/100 throughout the whole process. Can stand behind every damn word in what I said an year ago.

      Fairly certain Citroen do want to be appreciated - they’re not making cars for free for the love of it. The problem is if you’re making premium cars where the back windows don’t even go down then that isn’t ‘quirky’, it’s just annoying. I own a Citroen C3 which I massively regret buying because of it’s ‘quirky’ lack of any storage and dreadful driving characteristics. I will not buy another.

They stand out from the crowd and they are proud to do so. When the original c4 vtr was launched it set the trend. They are trend setters not followers. The only other brand I admire for design and trend setting is audi as everyone is copying there look

      the things i know... :D
      Renault and Peugeot/Citroen and now DS are very different in reliability, PSA have the dark year whit models like 307 or 407 every *07 to be right, but even those are quite reliable not the best cars to live, i have a 407 had a 406 before and in some aspects the 407 loses, its more cramped inside, uses more fuel its to heavy however much more refined ride.

      @mirkozlikovski9553 8 років тому +8

      +Omar +i raul & the lot... its not a joke... it's a question of perspective! ...you see, DS4 - while it still was a Citroen - was meant to be a bit more posh replacement for 1.gen C4 Coupe. Which was, like Xsara Coupe before it and all other C segment coupe's, a 3 door model! and like all 3 door models C4 Coupe had its rear windows fixed! and nobody made a fuss around that... with its replacement, they wanted to make a model which would still look like a coupe, but have a bit easier access to the second row! hence, narrow, but still usable rear doors, with hidden door handles and oversized windows, that - when shut - gives an impression of normal 2 door coupe... and if you ask me, they succeeded! so, DS4 is not to be considered as C segment family 4 door compact with fixed rear windows, but as C segment coupe with far more practical entry to the rear seats! ;)

    • @tomhurley2498
      @tomhurley2498 8 років тому +1

      +Mirko Zlikovski nobody made a fuss about the C4 coupe because it was a 3 door, the fact that this car is meant to suit the family dynamic and has 5 doors... and it's rivals have power windows makes it very impractical indeed. Though I do see where you're coming from with the '3 door look', the Renault Clio did it just as well and it has the functionality of rear power windows.

    • @mirkozlikovski9553
      @mirkozlikovski9553 8 років тому +3

      +Tom Hurley ... well of course this is a 'design trade-off', because to achieve the closest '3 door look' possible, on a car that has 5 doors, you have to put a larger window than the lower door opening actually is... to 'disguise or hide' rear doors even more, they made that awkward door handle 'protrusion' so they can have 'unbroken' chrome lining around the rear window, like it would be if there was only front pair of doors...
      but to understand WHY they did this, you have to understand their 'brand design'... at some point they decided that 3 door versions of the same model will have different look as their 5 door versions! they share platform, complete mechanics (engines and drive trains) and their interiors, but have different outer appearance... this was the case with first gen C3 (its 3 door version was C2), with first gen. C4, with second gen. C3 (where DS3 is its 3 door version) and with second gen. C4, where '3 door version' was DS4... with addition of 'shifting' then still Citroen DS models a bit 'up market'...
      so that's basically is it... DS4 is just a '3 door' version of C4! and it should be 'judged' like that... but I understand that separating DS line in to its own brand complicates everything an people in general are not 'observant' enough to understand all that...

    • @tomhurley2498
      @tomhurley2498 8 років тому +1

      +Mirko Zlikovski forgive my ignorance i'm Australian and Citroen never sold a 3 door DS4. Here they were also marketed very differently, or so it seems from what you've said. Here, the DS3 was a MINI Cooper rival, and than the C3 to more traditional supermini's (speaking British classes, in Australia it's the light class) such as the Honda Jazz or Renault Clio. But it's been clear to me in CarBuyer's other videos that this isn't that much of a difference. DS to me is appealing to a different audience rather than offering different body styles. And I'm sorry mate but I'm still not convinced about the rear doors. As I mentioned before, the Renault Clio and Honda Civic pulled off the same look with a larger window (which seems to let in next to no light in the video) and that impaling door handle position is not at all practical. I do agree that it looks good closed though, and agree it probably pulls off the 3 door look better than the others... but it's a family car

    • @mirkozlikovski9553
      @mirkozlikovski9553 8 років тому +3

      +Tom Hurley ... :)). well, you said it... IT DOES look good closed! in fact it looks damn good and much better than on models you're mentioning... and that's what they predominantly were after! because, when this car was 'conceived' and designed, its purpose WAS to be 'more upscale addition' to classical C segment family compact C4! as well as replacement for first C4 Coupe!! so, in other words, its target group was not 'families'... that was 5 door C4's 'dominion'! DS4 was meant for people that put ultimate practicality second (or doesn't need it), but like to have 'neat' and a bit 'higher class' product... basically, complaining about its rear windows is to me like complaining that A3 Sportback is a lousy estate, because it has a form of estate but virtually no space and practicality of a normal estate... frankly, there is the same story... it is 'estate like' addition to 'ordinary' A3, like DS4 is a 'coupe like' addition to ordinary C4! what you're saying about DS was 'secondary purpose' or so called 'bonus feature'... that is, before they separated it to stand alone brand! as Citroens, they (DS3 and DS4) primarily were '3 door replacements' for their previous generation 3 door 'C' models... in the same way it is wrong to look at DS 5 (because of the number in its name) as 'D segment premium' model... no! DS 5 is not 'C5 class' of a vehicle... it simply is rather posh version of C4 estate! or, a kind of 'fancy C4 Picasso GT' (on a count of its technical base)... so comparing DS5 with A5 and other D segment cars is 'misunderstanding the matter'. its competition are cars like A3 Sportback or V40...
      though, I agree... detaching DS line form other Citroen models into stand alone brand also means detaching them from their original purpose... which automatically emphasis their slightly idiosyncratic features which were somewhat 'covered' while they were Citroens...
      and you misunderstood me... DS4 never had a 3 door version. I said that it acts like a 3 door version of C4! but it might get one in future, with its replacement, when DS brand will need both, a 5 door family compact and a 3 door/coupe model of this size... and I doubt that there will be fixed windows on next 5 door DS4... because it won't just be 'an addition' any more...

      @@JonLondrezos the C4 is quiet and definitely more comfortable than the Golf. But i hear you. there should be more comfortable options in the Golf class. Double wishbone suspension and air sprung. Thick carpets and ridiculous amounts of sound deadening. But that will cost snd that’s probably why they don’t make that. Problem is that small cars are nearly as expensive to make as bigger ones.

      +g00dfeeling Soon. We'll see something like the C6 soon. I just wish that citroe- DS would engineer a hydro-pneumatic suspension for their range. The DS5 at least. In the Citroen C5, it performs perfectly for comfort and levelness.
      It seems like a betrayal in either the DS' or Citroen's name to sacrifice comfort over "handling". Not if more there was a soft suspension on offer.
      Anyway, I have been in a Citroen DS4 on a trip in Belgium. The back was hurtful. My Prius is far larger in the back - and front. The boot was square - which helped, and that's all that had going for it. The seats were very nice though and in no way did the feeling of quality was ruined in the DS4. The AC and heater were powerful.
      And I would understand for some that for some people like me, the back was a cocoon of darkness. I prefer the cathedral or greenhouse impression. But for other people, that's just what they want. They want to be surrounded by dark plastic and leather. So they can see their phones without glare.
      Given how bold Citroen was in introducing the DS sub-brand with the DS3 first in the glut of the economic crisis, fair play to them in selling more than a few several hundred thousand of these examples.

    I'm sure people had their doubts when Toyota introduced Lexus or when Nissan created Infinity. Different dog, same trick. Is it a good idea? Time will tell. It really depends on the cars. If anything, I think they've done it too late - it would've worked better if they introduced the DS line as a separate brand from the get go. Now it just screams rebranding and that's not what you're after when trying to go premium. As for the rear windows... At first, I was like "what?! that is stupid..." But than I realized that with air conditioning, you rarely open windows... at all. Especially on the back, where kids sit, and kids are great at getting sick from drafts. So... maybe it's not such a dumb idea after all?

    Well, Citroën didn't make the choice, PSA did. I think they made the right choice. Adding a few so called premium models to the range of a mainstream brand like Citroën and Peugeot won't work. Especially Citroën's image is not premium anymore. Almost no potential car buyer still remembers the glory days of the Citroën DS.
    DS does however face a two great challenges: First, they have to bring new, fresh and top notch technology cars soon. Second, the entire costumer experience from the dealership, over to the CRM from the headquarters up to their stuff on the internet and social media have to be on the level as well. They really need to get out of the comfort zone for this baby.

    Great review Matt, I just don't see how this car can be considered premium enough to be compared to a BMW 1er, Audi A3 etc ... It doesn't even feel premium enough to match a Ford Focus Titanium or a VW Golf highline... Besides it drives like crap and it looks horrendous. The rear window which doesn't open it's just priceless... hahaha

      +Kees Zoutzeling Well until you get inside of one you really won't know how premium it looks and feels. It isn't like BMW's always have the best interiors, I've come across more shit ones than nice ones in my life.

      +BombayBerke I owned a 1er F20 and the material quality(not the looks) is great, you get soft touch materials and good quality plastic everywhere. Now I own a mkvii GTI and it's also top notch(apart from the back side door, which is not soft touch). A friend of mine had a ds4 and it did not impress me at all , it's really cramped and I'm only 1.86m, specially in the rear. I felt in a mini and the ergonomics is awful. Just look at how poorly this car sells and how fast it depreciates, that reflects how good it is. Citroen should try to bring a performance hatchback like the Megane RS, or 308 GTI to the market instead of trying to be "premium", something it clearly isnt.

    I liked it more when it was a Citroen. They're rebranding, but they're keeping the cars from Citroen range. Now we have Citroen DS4 and DS4, which are essentially the same - and both not very good. I think the DS brand will be a failure in the european market. The competition from Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volvo is just better.

    The back windows are such a minimal problem as everyone uses air-con these days anyway? It's pretty obvious that 'Matt' clearly hates anything that's not BMW, Audi or VW. All 3 car manufactures that know their buyers are paying for that 'named' brand, so don't give two hoots about improving. I like the DS range and hope Citroen continue.

    They call them 'DS' and have a stylish logo but ... use only the 'S' in the badge, (front and steering wheel). WTF?
    And anyway, this 1-2-3-4-5-... boring namings should stop some time. Citroen, excuse me, DS, didn't dare.
    Also, the Citroen DSs had very nice masks, the DS5 one was a work of modern art. Now, look at these dull, old-styled ones. Hyundai designs much better looking fronts for their cars.
    Finally, if consumers have to consider DS as premium brand, doesn't that subsequently diminish the Citroen brand?

    Car manufacturers have gone too far to save money: first, they replaced regular-size spare tyre with "emergency" spare tyre, then they relace even that miserable little wheel with "tyre repair kit"! They start putting fixed rear side windows in 5-door "budget city cars" (like VW up!, Skoda Citygo, Citroen C1, Peufeot 107, Toyota Aygo, New Twingo etc.), now we see them in mid-sized hatchbacks, too! They left only two dashboard air vents (instead of 4) in Up! or C1/107 (back to the '70s!), then they replaced water temp. gauge with a warning light (back to the '60s!), and so on. It's unacceptable to pay, as an option (or even not even that!), for something which was standard 20 or 30 years ago! This is rip-off!

    Hi Mat...once again you refer to the mpg of this vehicle being well down on the manufacturer's claim...you make the same comment in almost every review you do.
    Isn't it time some of the ways manufacturers' obtain those figures was exposed? ...perhaps a special episode?...using ultra skinny tires...removing side mirrors...taping closed all seams and the radiator...doing the "test" on a downhill run or billiard table like road...putting a "special" undertray " to reduce wind resistance...etc
    After the VW diesel scandal surely ALL claims, including those referring to mpg should be investigated...I for one would certainly look forward to such an episode or at the very least your opinion on the matter and perhaps taking a stand on the issue...cheers : )

    Surely if your new to market with a "up-market" spin off brand, you would look at your competitors and see what they did well and then add that your product. You would see where your competitors fall short by conducting market research and make your car had those things out of the gate. It would seem at some point during a meeting someone should have been told to shut up and sit down, but instead the rest of the people in that meeting nodded and thought it was a good idea.
