I feel like gen 2 was more notorious for miserable learnsets. Gen 1 was mean to fire, electric, grass, poison, and bug. Most other types had at least decent coverage, especially including TMs. I do like the cross between the gen 1 availability and the Pokémon's debut learnset though. The limitations feel really good for backports.
A Giovanni only run in Pokemon Yellow? Hell yes! Might make for a fun series too: which Gym Leader can complete Pokemon Yellow the fastest, when you gotta use their Pokemon and AI rules
In the early days: I had to guess on how much Surge might suck. Nowadays: We can calculate exactly how much Surge sucks. Surge is out here getting absolutely annihilated!
@ZealousPawn I picked up SmithPlays Yellow Legacy mod and played under the game's internal Hard Mode ruleset and Raichu... was about as close to an actual fight as a mon could be without the good AI modifier. Surge getting that would have made Raichu an absolute problem.
Surge could have won, in fairness. It's just unlikely. He'd need to use TBolt first move, paralyse Sableye, then have it miss a turn, then go for Tbolt again and either get a good enough damage range that the two KO or have it get paralysed again and go for Tbolt a third time. I reckon he wins once every few thousand battles.
It's kind of too gorgeous. It looks amazing, and exactly what I would expect a Sableye back sprite to look like... and that's pretty rare in gen 1. lol
Your channel really has come a long way. I can't remember how long I've been watching but it's been at least 3 years. I remember before you had an overlay at all it would just be a certain color with a couple pictures of the Pokemon you were playing. I think the first one I saw was Chansey
I really love all the artwork and drawings. Each one tells a little story and adds a special charm to this channel - thx Sarina wouldn’t be the same wirhout them
This playthrough really makes me optimistic about what Spiritomb could pull off if you backported it with similar rules. Learns both Hypnosis and Nasty Plot (which you've been replacing with Amnesia) by levelup, so I feel like it could do really well, crushing the early game like Sableye did while also being able to do something in the late game.
I love all the work you do. Unfortunately I do agree that these are a bit less satisfying without Dark type moves. I saw your explanation in the Houndoom video, but I think a mid-level power like Feint Attack would be appropriate. I know you want to keep it authentic... but if Dark type was in the game, it would at LEAST have one weak Dark and probably one strong Dark attack. Love your work, and ultimately, it's your choice!
Faint Attack feels fair to me. Crunch doesn't make much sense without Bite being Dark as well. I can buy Pursuit as well, but maybe without the 2x damage when switching out. So just the standard weak early game move.
@@lazyhippie6139 On paper like was said in the houndoom video, a dark type second bite could be added, could be as simple as calling it 'Dark Fang' to match the other elemental fangs. But yeah, getting just 2-3 dark type moves (And subsequently steel type moves in those runs) would fit with what was made for gen 1.
@@ceulgai2817 Honestly I think it is more the reason to refine backporting types. An argument could be made about fairy type, but with how Steel and Dark were added immediately after, there is more than enough reason to think about them in gen 1.
@Jeikobu Nah, that's presupposing the conclusion. Anything that wasn't in Gen 1 shouldn't be in a backport. No additional moves, no additional types, just the Pokémon, its stats, and as many Gen 1 moves as it learns in a reasonable fashion. Scott (and many of his commenters)'s methodology is far from refined, you're right, but it seems like it's due to them not being able to handle a lack of access to things they know exist or being able to handle difficulty. "But Megahorn and Rage Fist are sooo good" so? Of course Annihilape is going to outperform if you give it a special move no other mon can use.
Daily December is the reason I subscribed through UA-cam membership. The level of work and time that goes into it must be immense and thats why I wanted to join to show my appreciation for it! Excited to hear its repeating scott :D
I liked using Sableye after it got Prankster in Gen 5. I know it wasn't exactly effective, but I had fun annoying other players in Showdown with a set of Substitute/Taunt/Recover/Will-o-Wisp. In this case, it's okay to begin at level 13 as Sableye can be found as early as level 10 in Sapphire and Emerald. And I always like to imagine Wrap or Bind against Ghost-types, with the Ghost-type being merely annoyed at the fact they cannot move, while the other Pokémon is trying so hard despite being unable to do anything.
I ADORE this thumbnail art of Sableye. The toothy grin + the shading and the harsh perspective on the front claw makes it look goofy and menacing at the same time. It looks amazing and fits this gremlin so well too. Sableye is one of my favorite Gen3 mons because of its gameplay implications through ability and typing. It makes a lot of trainers (including a gym leader) completely free and gets a bunch of moves to use those free turns with, including the amazing Calm Mind. That even continues in ORAS, where it actually got nerfed (Fairy and requires the bike) but now learns Power Up Punch to abuse the AI with. It's such a fun pokemon to use in regular gameplay totally in spite of its low stats, so I'm especially excited to see it here in Gen1.
Back sprite is neat! I like the approach you take when backporting these while still preserving a lot of the game it's ported in to. I initially found this channel through the Smeargle race in Yellow Version, and these backports are always really cool!

This was an interesting backport, especially the fact that Sableye having no weaknesses is kinda balanced out by its mediocre stats. My only criticism is that I feel as though because Sableye doesn't learn Rock Slide in Gen 3, it shouldn't get that TM in the backport. It's a minor criticism though and I see why you gave it that move. Cannot wait for the Halloween video (my guess is Shedinja, which'll be.....something)!

Really looking forward to the inevitable backport of Lunala into Pokemon Yellow. In Yellow version, it would have zero weaknesses, three immunities (normal, fighting, and ghost), and two resistances (poison and psychic). It starts with Confusion, Hypnosis, Teleport, and its signature Moongeist Beam, a which is basically just Ghost Earthquake. It gets access to all the electric and ice TMs for coverage. And those beefy legendary stats that can run both offences, with good speed, and still have good bulk (even better if you also backport its signature ability, which halves damage when hit at full health). Its only drawback seems to be the slow growth rate, and small PP on Moongeist Beam. But if anything can get zero resets on the first playthrough, it feels like it would be Lunala (watch Lorelei get a cheeky freeze, just to spite me). But I think it could really hit the ground running (flying?) and never slow down. edit: I just realized, it also has no buffing moves, which could slow it down. Unless you change Cosmic Power to like... Growth or Defense Curl, neither of which is a great substitution (Growth is probably too good, since it also boosts offence, and Defense Curl isn't good enough, since it's only physical defense). And even if you did do that, it suddenly has 5 starting moves...
Perhaps you could get your artist to modify Giovanni's artwork to include a reference to his sponsor. You could either make it really obvious, like a NASCAR driver's uniform, or a subtle badge on his blazer, but either way it'd be hilarious.
What about doing your future testing with Gen 3+ AI (picking the attack that would do the most damage, no picking useless status moves just because their types are "super effective")?
when you eventually implement a Fairy into gen 1 (if you have not already done so) will you also make Dragon Rage hit them since it is a move with fixed damage even tho Fairy is immune against Dragon?
Yeah, honestly, this is pretty representative of using Sableye casually too in Gen 3. It's pretty good, peaks in early/midgame, up til endgame, where it really starts struggling.
I would love to see a backport do multiple generations in one video; similar to a vs format, but obviously the times wouldn't be comparable. More, where does it struggle, where does it succeed, and what about each generation affects it the most. Something like a late gen legendary or starter doing gen 1, then 2, seeing the difference between move availability, routing & experience, and gym level scaling. A terrible backport would be fun, too. Things like the badge boost glitch could make a weak Pokémon viable in Yellow, but nearly useless in Crystal.
On paper, dark/ghost seems like great typing because of the obvious lack of weaknesses before Gen 6, but in practice it really highlights the lack of resistances, only one, to poison and while that’s the most common type in Kanto you don’t really get hit with a lot of poison attacks anyway. Spiritomb makes up for it by having pretty good natural bulk, but sableye takes a lot from strong neutral hits. And there’s also the problem that even if you had coded in a dark move, dark and ghost have essentially completely overlapping coverage baring the Gen 1 psychic bug. It also doesn’t help that it’s only stab ghost move is lick and that’s a pretty under tuned move generally backed by sub par stats and no boosting moves.
It’s also interesting that in gen 1 specifically, there are several typings that have no real weaknesses. Normal/ghost doesn’t because there’s no dark type yet and psychic/ghost doesn’t for the same reason and psychic’s accidental ghost immunity. Also interesting that this format really advantages things that have signature moves, although to be fair a lot of stuff in Gen 1 straight up don’t have stab moves at all or a really garbage learn set. Zoroark vs Hisuian zoroark would be interesting for a bunch of reasons. And flutter mane and mimikyu have no signature moves but Grimmsnarl has 2 for some reason. I was going to say but they’re both special and that’s true, but grimmsnarl has 95 special attack for some reason.
23:24 You actually don't speed tie the Persian. The Persian gave you a badge boost when it used Screech so it only looked like you speed tied it, but you actually were outsped.
If you're like me and came to the comments after you got confused why psywave hit Sableye, the move has randomly generated damage and counts as "fixed damage". Same thing as bide for ghosts.
Shedinja backport must have wonder guard implemented somehow though. Otherwise it is not a Shedinja. And yeah, OHKOing things that have a move for Shedinja is going to be difficult. But at least it gets Swords Dance!
Not sure if it's an editing thing, but as you were discussing the Tauros getting trapped in using rage, the text says it used leer right before you knocked it out at 42:10. Can the AI stop using rage??
I really appreciate that you make them learn fewer moves in gen 1, I think that's important and makes it feel really authentic

Count me on in the "Giovanni Run", but only if you make a "Blaine from Red/Blue" afterwards. They sound like good ideas for a chill stream.
A spooky type with a crazy ability?! I SURE DO HOPE ITS GHOLDENGO, I LOVE HIM HE IS MY BEST FRIEND!
Are you ever going to do a yellow run with a mega pokemon?
I'm normally not a fan of backports, but Sabeleye has me intrigued, considering Dark didn't exist in Gen 1 and Ghost didn't have many options.
this makes me wonder how swampert does and might be pretty damn good
Funnily enough, Bide also ignores the invulnerability glitch you can get through dig and fly, and can still damage you.
since you asked the back sprite turned out quite good in my opinion
Perhaps you could get your artist to modify Giovanni's artwork to include a reference to his sponsor. You could either make it really obvious, like a NASCAR driver's uniform, or a subtle badge on his blazer, but either way it'd be hilarious.
Giovanni Guard Spec Challenge would watch 10/10
What about doing your future testing with Gen 3+ AI (picking the attack that would do the most damage, no picking useless status moves just because their types are "super effective")?
when you eventually implement a Fairy into gen 1 (if you have not already done so) will you also make Dragon Rage hit them since it is a move with fixed damage even tho Fairy is immune against Dragon?
Yeah, honestly, this is pretty representative of using Sableye casually too in Gen 3. It's pretty good, peaks in early/midgame, up til endgame, where it really starts struggling.
It just doesn't have the stats. Ghosts are inherently broken in most early games due to just about everything being stuck with Normal type moves.
Where is that picture of Sableye from the thumbnail from? It looks so good :D
Would magnazone be pure electric or electric steel?
Whats Up with the 2nd playtrough ?
You didnt Show the last Pokemon from the Champion 😅😅
JRose coming back for daily uploads at the end of the year plus Scott’s thoughts Daily December!? We are EATING GOOD!!!
The backsprite is very good
If you're like me and came to the comments after you got confused why psywave hit Sableye, the move has randomly generated damage and counts as "fixed damage". Same thing as bide for ghosts.
The custom sprites are perfect.
Amazing video, can't wait for tomorrow.
