its my first time actually listening to a kapahaka group perform and this group honestly gave me goosebumps as well as made me cry.. i could honestly feel their emotions through this performance... damn throughout my 19 years of life living in New Zealand i have Never Ever sat still and listened and watched a kapahaka group sing a waiata~ and I really love this Performances it feels like there's a strong deep meaning or something behind it!
Kia ora. I am one of the performers in this group. And it is humbling to see these kind words. And now I would like to share to you the reason and why this song was sung with such emotion. One of our fathers (the man in the photo) passed away just 3 days before our performance. And this somg was composed by his son. He loved this song. So we sung it in commemoration to him.
Love this they're singing with real feeling can hear it In there voices... man they sound beautiful... I can watch this over & over again & again & yet everytime It seems to get better... (iykyk)
e hia kē ngā tau kua hipa, ā, e tangi tonu ana au ia te wa ka matakitaki i te waiata nei. Ka tino rangona me te kitea ngā kare a roto e matou e aro kau nei ki tēnei waiata rōreka
The man is Uncle Rawiri Rangitauira. He is of Ngati Whakaue and Te Whakatohea decent as can be heard in the waiata. He was one of Aotearoa's early Māori lawyers. He also recited our whakapapa from Tamatekapua right down to my sister (during her tangihana back in 2014)...

Apparently, the dad to one of the performers. His son composed the song and his dad loved it. The dad passed away a few days before the performance.
