Paul R. Tregurtha - A Little Bit Louder Now... Okay, a Lot Louder!

  • Here is the Paul R. Tregurtha making her first return visit to Duluth for the 2024-2025 shipping season on April 30, 2024. We had previously seen her on this channel making her first departure of the season, as she left the Twin Ports with a load of coal, bound for the power plants at St. Clair and Monroe in Michigan. Now she was empty and returning for a second helping of coal, with the same destinations in mind. Unlike her departure seven days earlier, the Tregurtha was clearly in a more talkative mood and let loose with a captain's salute upon arrival... which the Aerial Lift Bridge answered in return.
After covering the Tregurtha's arrival in the Duluth shipping canal, I then moved over to Rice's Point to watch as the Tregurtha backed under the John A. Blatnik bridge and approached the dock at the Midwest Energy Terminal on the Superior side of the harbor. This vantage point gives us a little greater perspective for just how long the Tregurtha really is. That's something one doesn't fully appreciate in shipping canal, as her appearance is somewhat foreshortened when seen on video... as we're too close to take in a full side-on view.
The 1013' 6" Paul R. Tregurtha is the longest ship on the Great Lakes, earning her the title "Queen of the Lakes." She has held that title longer than any other lake carrier. She was launched in 1981 as the William J. DeLancey, a name she carried until 1990 when she was named after the Vice Chairman of Interlake Steamship, the ship's operator. The Paul R. Tregurtha is powered by a pair of medium-speed MaK M43C 6-cylinder diesel engines providing a combined 17,120 BHP. Her five cargo holds are accessed by 36 deck hatches. She can hold a maximum of 68,000 tons. Her self-unloading system consists of a 260-foot unloading boom which can discharge at a rate of 10,000 tons of iron ore per hour or 6,000 net tons of coal per hour.

The first 1000 footer I ever saw was the Big Paul. I am from Texas. I was in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan to cross country ski, and I was having lunch at a diner next to the Soo Locks. The Big Paul passed through the locks right then and there. I will always be a fan!

I liked how the steam hung in the air after the Tregurtha had passed. I think the ship deserves a "honorary steam ship" award. 🏆

I’m certain of it! I’ve often stood at the Superior entry and have heard ships saluting from the Duluth canal. A ship as loud as the Tregurtha could no doubt be heard. 🙂

Her massive, slightly raspy horn is the perfect fit for the largest ship on the lakes.

Big ship, big noise, big everything...plowing through the canal and taking over the whole place..I love it. I did, in fact, miss your earlier video, I'll look it up. Happy Honoring Memorial Day to all of you who served!

Almost looks like the Queen of the Lakes got lengthened by 500 or so feet! Not really, of course, but the Paul R. Tregurtha is a biiiiiiiiigggg boat.

Sounds like the deck crew was working doubletime to get the hatches open as the Tregurtha passed by you. And the view @6:35 makes for a great PR photo, and something for a company calendar.

You know what’s crazy? The title “Queen of the Lakes” is actually unofficial, even though she’s the largest freighter on the Great Lakes.
