      Hi Eric -
As always, great video. I recently purchased your drawing templates for AutoCAD and I have a quick technical question. In min 1:00 - 1:04, I see that you are adjusting the line weights on paper space; and the lines are showing as black lines regardless of the layer that they are on. How did you achieve that?
      Thanks!

Hi, Denis...that was actually in ModelSpace...if you watch the "Minimalist UI (my settings)" video comes with the template purchase you'll see exactly how to set it up.

I’m an architect with 15 years built work experience in UK. What I would like to point out to all the student architects watching this is the language of communication of architecture is universal. I wasn’t taught how to compile a construction tender package at university. This is only knowledge gained through years of practical experience. Hats off to Eric for a beautiful set of drawings

As a commercial subcontractor who does material take-offs for bids, your plans are a dream come true. In reality less than 5% of the documents I see ever come close to your level. When plans are vague our proposals are naturally inflated to cover worse case scenarios. Clear and precise documents may cost more up front but clarity makes the building process so much more enjoyable for contractors to work together to easily and competitively build what was designed. I hope some of those less than thorough architects take note of your channel and learn to elevate their work! Thanks for your channel, it's always inspiring.

This is my favorite video you have ever made. In architecture we see so many details and drawings but typically with no context of how they fit with the whole set. The topic of construction drawings intrigues me so much because this is the critical step that translates design to reality.

Hey Eric, as usual perfectly and patiently explained. I wish I could have every client and even some builders go through some of your videos as an education tool. Having another architect (like yourself) preaching what I preach becomes a reinforcing tool we can all benefit from. So many good comments and observations in this one, that I think a lot of younger folks might over look. Thanks for the energy and time you put in. I think the industry as a whole continues to benefit and unify but at a pretty slow pace. Pulling back the curtains and explaining your process only helps all of us create a consistency and a level of expectation clients should be able to see. That seeing and understanding is what clients should hopefully recognize as one of the values when hiring a licensed professional. MV

For the BUILDER the more detail by the Architect the less questions on site. For the Customer the Value Spent on the Plans, is getting what they expect. Communication is everything and the Narrative starts with the Architect. Good Architect fees cost less than the mistakes without a good Plan. Good stuff here.

As a graduate structural Engineer (but 17 years experience in the industry) - i find your videos, production value and insight (even from the UK) - pretty priceless.
For all students, no matter where you are, or what field you work in, an appreciating of the Architects role is fundamental in the successful delivery of the project. Once you know whats expected from the architect (from you), and the scope for delivering that expectation is agreed, you should really be using the Architects documents as your own brief to deliver your service.
Remember - as its taking me many years cursing architects (which i have reversed my criticism in my later years :p) - they are team players and the more onside you keep them, the easier it is to deliver the project for the client - as they pay your wages and can influence selection on the next project!!!
To have the most detailed spec and drawings is the difference between a good project and a bad project for me.

Nicely done! Interesting to see how much you take drawing standards and even specs standards, and evolve them into your own template, with your visual touch and thought behind them. I'd say a lot of younger architects jump to the "how" part of drafting, and forget the "why" part, and so its lost along the way that despite there being a standard, you can adjust it to suit you and your method of communication. The way you phrased what the spec outline does for you: "catalog of your favorite products and systems, and best practices." Amazing, the simplicity of that thought. Wish I'd been writing specs earlier on so I could have been building my own favorites catalog. Just some thoughts from a young architect who admires your videos :D

Eric - excellent video. In defence of the level of detail you use - getting it 'right first time' for the client is what matters. Raises the contractors game too!

The only thing that troubled me a little was on how do you manage all these details of construction? Searching for new ones every new project, or using a set methods from older projects?
Amazing video as always !! Thank you a lot !!

Excellent explanation of construction documents- which are also the Contract Documents. If something is not shown in drawings, details, specs or schedules it is not in contractor pricing. As you note, someone has to decide everything, either the architect or the worker in the field. Also a good example of how the real work of an architect is not just design but also organization and communication and documentation. Having art and math skills is not the hurdle that many think it is for being an architect. The key thing is conceptualizing and visualizing 3D space..

Coming from a small design build company we've never really followed the standard masterformat, we have a loosely similar format for contract docs though not as detailed as that, and then just provide more drawing details to the site as the construction goes lol.. so you can imagine the constant client approvals for the actual drawings.. I've already left that office but I wish we knew this back then..

I am an MEP Engineer and these videos help me to understand how architects think and helps me think of how I can work with them in integrating engineering systems into the architecture.
    Great videos !!!!

Very helpful, thank you. Recently, I was lucky enough to buy a nice piece of land in Hungary, in the countryside and I am planning to build a secure place there, God wiling.

I really love the color palette! Thanks for going into detail about all the drawings required for transferring a concept to a built project. As a student, I really needed this. Thanks for sharing Eric!
