    I think this is amazing.
    As a 3d printing company this would be a great benefit to anyone doing printing or making.
    It's important we start to reduce the plastic waste.
    And now with the vast filament selection. And mainly useless trinkets printed that are thrown away. We can now focus on recycling all of this

    This is cool, i work on large extrusion machines making vinyl window parts, its really amazing seeing this on a smaller scale, it kinda reminds me of our capstock extruders

    congratulations, that machine is awesome, here in Colombia i worked in a company where posts and boards are made from recycled plastic, the machines retain the same concept as yours. molding is done by extrusion and then cooling by immersion in water. greetings.

    Very informative and entertaining video Dave, on the subject of modifying and hacking this machine's orientation is very similar to horazontal injection molding machines, if clamping force and an assembly for the mold holder/ part ejecter can be drafted this could turn into an automated or semi automatic injection molding machine instead of the labor intensive hand operated one.

    one thing i've noticed missing from the list of machines, and making recycled filament being mentioned, for a greater control on size, and compactness between extruder and spooling device, A water bath is handy. cools the filament so it locks in the size, it's less likely to stretch or deform after that.

    Hola soy Efrain, (no se si este comentario llegara al autor del video, pero espero que si) tengo 16 años, estudio electromecanica y me parecio un buen proyecto de escuela, pero fuera de lo escolar e decidido hacer todas las maquinas presentadas en la pagina, creo que es una gran idea para cambiar el mundo. desde pequeños avances en mi ciudad se pueden hacer grandes cosas.

    In joy the video thanks for shearing. I have a welding tip grinding where you are going to weld will make the weld stick better. Look better. And you won't have as much build up. Less inclusion in welds. Anyway just my 2 cents.

    From your developments, i can build all-in-one machine. Shredder -> extruder -> printer. I threw plastic in to the case and after 32 hours the printer do anything that i was needed at home... great scott! :D i hope in 2019 you are already do it.

      if everybody decided tor recycle plastic like that instead of just throwing it out there wouldnt be any in the ocean people need to stop looking at plastic like its trash but rather like a materials that can be recycled indefinitely to make all sorts of stuff like tables car parts tools etc

    Even if I weren't as bad as I am with mechanics, I can't afford this amount of work and neither can pay for all the tools you used. But, I would like to have a machine like this at home. I'm trying to go zero waste but there's a lot of stuff at home made of plastic that I want to turn into something useful. How could I do it to have someone doing it for me? Who should I contact?

      The temperature controller PID you're using should have a wiring diagram. That's pretty much all you need.

    3:49 can i ask you for extrusion crews? i can't find the screw (in 3:32 .it's gap on top bigger than gap on other side). can i use the screw (in 3.49 . the screw has balance gap in all), plz give a advise quickly. i wanna set that machne

    Machine looks to the level I can build one with my tools. Only doubt is, I see in your site maximum it is supposed to run for 4h/day. What prevents it to be used for longer runs? I would want 8-12 hours runs at least, but pro-makine is a bit overkill for the purpose. What should be improved in this machine to have at least these run times?

      It would work, but, a hand drill is not designed for continuous operation. So I am pretty sure you would burn the drill out. How long it would take to kill the drill depends on how good the drill is, but, I am kinda certain that would happen.

      I don't think it would have the torque required. Sure, the bit they use is meant to be used on a hand drill, but all the power is focused on the tip of the bit drilling into the wood. Here, it's focused throughout the entire body, or "threads", of the bit. So high torque is needed, so that you have a very consistent speed.

      Would not work. We need a slow speed motor is not really true. We need motor with high torque. How to get more torque? For examle, reduction gearing. Reduction gear is makes the motor slower and gives more torque. Its like your gear shifter vs gas pedal on your car. You don't shift back on uphill because you want to go slow, but because your car can't sustain the high speed under high load, just like your electric motor.
      Plus most drills not designed to deliver high torque, continous operation, etc...

      A slow motor isn't optional, the plastic needs time to melt and the extruder needs time to extrude. Therefore a slow motor is necessary.

    How about precision and repeatability of produced filament? Can this machine be used to produce perfectly round filament suitable for a 3D printer (1.75 or 3 mm with 2% tolerance)?

      I dont think so because there is no reglulation exept the manual pulling, heat and the skrew at the nozzle.
      (it would be pretty inconsistent)

      I think you could do that, but you need to enable stable positioning of the extruded filament at least to the distance from the nozzle where it has solidified. You cuold do that by winding the filament at a distance from the nozzle. This can be done with a motor operated mandrel. However I can guess this is not too simple because the winding needs to be done at the same speed of the filament extrusion, and as the filement winds, the mandrel rotation needs to be decreased accordingly. You would need to control motor speed electronically. I also think vertical extrusion would be better because in the horizontal conformation, the circular section of the fused filament would tend to flatten because of the gravity. In vertical extrusion you won't have this effect.

      No it would not meet your 2% tolerance. By using a drill bit and not a true extrusion screw you will get air bubbles in your filament.

    I built one myself and it works great! However, I am using a DC motor that gets really hot after 3 minutes of use. I know it will over heat if I keep at it. Does anyone know what motor specs I should be using? Several people below have mentioned high torque, but no one has mentioned the actual value or the operating rpm. Also, I am trying to produce 8lbs/hr (0.0011Kg/s), does anyone know what torque and rpm I should be using to get that kind of mass flow rate?
