Thanks definitely this is a instructional video for dummies like me😅 I just got trd off road and never looked at instructions on how to engage 4x4 !! Thanks
To all the RTFM guys NO i didn't not read the manual on the 4WD yet. The truck is a month old and I put it on 4WD today for the first time. As my last truck, I put it in Neutral and put it in 4W high...then stopped, Neutral again and 4W LOW.. My issue came up when I went to put it back into 2WD and it just wouldn't go. I tried it in NEUTRAL, DRIVE and PARK but it would not go in.....then the only thing left to try was rolling in DRIVE....and right in. Wish I watched this BEFORE lol Or yes, read the manual first. Thank YOU
Rolling or not, mine dosent want to engage 4x! low is a different story all together! It's like it has a mind of it's own... The last time it did go into low,,, it didn't want to get out!!! WTF 2021 ex-cab v-6 6sp man trans TRD SPORT bought it new has 28k on it now TROUBLE since New! been in the shop more than i drive it
How often have you engaged it in the past. Sounds like she's sticking for you. 4low only has 1 way to engage. It's nothing special. Alot don't realize the green symbol needs to be locked first and until that is. 4 low isn't even a thought yet.
When improper use you can definitely trip or trick the system. I had some slow 4hi engagements this past few days due to -40 -50 temps. However I was doing 60kmh-40mph and ended up going into neutral while coasting cuz it wasn't doing it in D. Sometimes the gear change gives it that little OOF and you should hear/listen for the inside clicks
Front diff or t case actuator. Sometimes you can tap them I think while someone turns the dial. It's the only two real causes of not 4Hi engaging. Not sure how or why you're going back to toyota so often for a common fix.
Hi, Yeah I engage it anywhere from 1- 5 or 6 times a month and sometimes it slips right into place, 7 out of 10 times? But im always praying that it will go in! I've had it in the shop countless times and they find nothing wrong @@CanadianOffroad4x4
if it dosent lock in the light will keep flashing and beeping, like mine! I want to trade it in but they wont give me anything for it! not even 30k yet @@CanadianOffroad4x4
Watch the video of “Car Care Nut”, he is a master mechanic from Toyota. He switch from 2-wheel drive to 4H while crusing on a straight line, doing it repeatedly as long as you don’t turn and speed not more than 60mph. And he said you can do that in a dry pavement (just make sure drive on a straight line and do not turn, and no more than 60mph speed).
Yes and did you Even watch my video. I simply showed such things and I learned from Toyota techs in house when I worked for toyota for years. 60mph is the cap to engage it correct. You can be turning If you want. I don't ever. Only time steering wheel comes into play is for 4 low and rear locker.
@useryggfdcc once you're locked you can go as fast as you want. But to engage it. Has to be under 100kmh/62mph. 80kmh is perfect. Usually clicks in 3 seconds at that speed if it's not a frozen -40 temp.
@@CanadianOffroad4x4 Thanks for the quick response 👍. Im planning to do a transmission drain and fill this weekend coming. Going to get a Scangauge 2 to monitor the tranny fluid temp as when to open the fluid level check. I saw the wire setup in the OBD plug but couldn't get it working so far. The Scangauge 2 can read transmission temp......level chk at 98 -115 degrees F.
Been trying to get a 2022 Tacoma TRD sport 4x4 double cab it's dam near impossible. The dealership wants 45 k . Last year that's what the TRD Pro cost. Now the TRD Pro is 50 plus. Shit is ridiculous
Try it with and without see how it goes. I would do it in neutral always as well but just at the very most, foot off the gas pedal entirely then switch then get back into the throttle!
Why wouldnt you? Neutral is the safest gear EVER for a transmission. Theres nothing wrong with it at all. You can do it on both. Not sure what the reasoning is.
ive engaged it on a variety of surfaces. I usually engage it before I go up the obstacle or anything like that. Its like going 2wd then when ur stuck u switch to 4hi.Just put it in 4x4 and go. Same thing. Put the locker on before and ur good and most cases you be levelled surface. I mostly just gotta rock back n forth a smidge
Thanks for the video. I think it would help you and your viewers to watch the following video: ua-cam.com/video/-FZcmDGVEmE/v-deo.html AMD, the Car Care Nut, is a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician, and he explained Toyota's 4WD system. At 11:40, he goes from 2H to 4H back and forth at will without going into neutral, nor does he take his foot off the gas. All he says is to at least engage the 4WD at least once a month to keep the system working.
Yep I know sorry. Already been established with my buddies comment..I was over doing things a bit. Sure it's quick but some also like the explanation behind things and some feedback. It's an old video. Maybe I'll redo one and simply it with a minute long or something
Handful of people dont like the truth or believe it or I have personal haters disliking my videos who knows....Manuals i dont see a difference personally no. Long as you are moving while engaging it, thats the main thing!
Thx for replying and I know ppl will always hate , because they don’t have what they don’t have. I was wondering because I’ve been having rough disengagement’s. It’s like a clunky feel and sound. Hope it’s nothing problematic. Have a great day!
I was just watching another video that said if you want to put it in for low you should stop your car put it in neutral and switch to four low. I don't know if that's the case but if you shouldn't switch while moving to for low that's probably something you should add to this video. I do know that for high you can switch into while moving. But I'm not as sure about four low. Common sense as far as I know it would say switching to anything in neutral would be better than doing it while moving because there's no strain on the transmission or the engine but I don't know that's why I clicked on the video.
I already said in the video 4 low has only 1 way to be activated. There's nothing I have to explain. 4 low can't be activated without being stopped and neutral. It's an entire gear change. There's no tutorial needed for that.
Sorry for that. Old video. Tried to do alot more explaining. Might redo a bunch to make it easier. There's nothing to see when you're driving the same truck as me. It's 4 hi. Turn the knob. 4 low as stated is only neutral and stopped Just be moving while you engage 4hi at anytime. Happy medium is always 30mph I find.
@sharkattack457 120% agree sir I'm definitely going to have a new look to my videos being uploaded. I've already set the limit to 10 mins a video and 5 mins for tutorials
Cool thanks for the update

5 seconds... 9 minute video. Damn metric system!
Keep up the good work, Rusty!

Aaahhhh thanks for that information
I am happy to show people. Still working to this day. 107k and 6 years ownership. Hassle free for my 4wd with this method.

You can go as fast as you want once you're fully engaged in 4hi though. 4 hi is the same gearing as 2wd. Just the engaging speed is the most important
@@CanadianOffroad4x4
So its ok to drive 100km/h in 4WD with the Taco?
Its just important not to engage 4wd over 80km/h.
Correct?

Happy to help. Turned out perfectly!
Is placing the vehicle on neutral on a manual transmission the same procedure??
Try it with and without see how it goes. I would do it in neutral always as well but just at the very most, foot off the gas pedal entirely then switch then get back into the throttle!
I was tought to never shift and automatic from N to D while moving - never
Why wouldnt you? Neutral is the safest gear EVER for a transmission. Theres nothing wrong with it at all. You can do it on both. Not sure what the reasoning is.
So to deactivate, do you just take your foot off/coast and not worry about putting it in neutral before turning it off?
Yes. Throttle input while changing Definitely not recommended. Good way to damage things if not careful.
Why does this dude sound drunk 😂
Must be my canadian tone i suppose lol
you bin sipping on uncle remus stuff EH?
Thank you!
I've heard you have to be on a level surface to engage the rear locker. Is that true?
ive engaged it on a variety of surfaces. I usually engage it before I go up the obstacle or anything like that. Its like going 2wd then when ur stuck u switch to 4hi.Just put it in 4x4 and go. How many gears has this many slapped? Lol nice video none the less
None haha haven't had issues
What kinda of drive does the Low 4x4 need to be activated
4 hi locked (green symbol) and neutral. You can't engage 4 low any other way
