Thank you, Matt, for creating these helpful videos. I’m 70 and have Parkinson’s Disease. I walk 3 miles every day and do weight training 3 days per week. I don’t need a cane for mobility, but I bought a CaneMasters hickory cane that I can take if I feel the need. I live in the country on a ranch. The nearest town is 45 minutes away and is a small ski town. So - my chances of being placed in a violent situation is less than many people face on a daily basis. However, I have a hickory walking stick that I use when I go hiking which I do at least once a week. Sorry to write War and Peace.
When I was a kid , I had sticks stashed everywhere for dogs. Back then dogs ran free. Nowadays I need a stick for dead beats and d-horns. Ran into a couple of fetty-dogs at 5:30 am .I popped them with my cane masters hickory cane and moved on.
Thanks for the video. I don't think that I would ever try the hand switch in a real self-defense situation. As an exercise for dexterity of both my hands and mind, those moves look great. I'll try to get to Tim Miller at some point. I'm far behind on my UA-cam watching. I've been trying to do a little creative writing, and that takes me away from social media.
Thank you so much! Hopefully you have had a good holiday period! I love my Jo staff, though I usually train with my Hanbo because it has a similar length like my selfmade walking stick which I almost always take outside with me (or an umbrella). And I love training the Irish style movements you have greatly taught in many of your videos. Thanks again and looking forward to seeing you soon again 🙏 P.S. Watching Tim Miller is a great advice from you!
Matt, Thanks for the great videos. I love carrying my Brazos hickory walking stick. Learning how to use it as an effective self defense tool is so enjoyable. Love your attitude & "keep it simple" teaching style. I also have a lead loaded shillelagh that I carry in non-permissive environments. Your videos about canes & walking sticks really help. Keep up the good work!
Just bought one of your canes, waiting the couple of weeks it said to be manufactured and delivered. I'll soon be 73 and hope I never have to defend myself with it but it's good to know that I have a non-lethal option.
I am just seeing this video : Great lesson Sensei !! . I am from the "Old school " and I know " How to speak softly and carry a BIG STICK " ; AND ! I know how to use it .!! Thank You Sensei.!!
In recent past I was practicing and missed the target and hit a wooden coffee table and chips and splinters went flying off! Lol! This type of training CAN be very effective when done on a regular basis
Thanks MATT, IN MY COUNTRY A 65 YR GUY WAS FOLLOWED BY NA GROUP OF TEEN TROUBLE MAKERS FROM A BUS TERMINAL & KING HIT ,FELL ON CONCRETE & DIED! KID GOT 2 YRS HOME DETENTION! How different i could have been.
Matt - Great stuff! I'm 76 and walk with a lightweight, strong rattan stick. How about a few moves to escape the grasp of a bad guy who catches me by surprise? Thanks
This is great apartment cardio with my diy minimalist Ho staff. Made one of each (Ho, Jo and Bo), but they're too nice to knock against another staff so I'm making a 4th one in case I find a practice partner... or dead tree.
Hi Janet, 1. Situational awareness 2. Basic self defense training that is age and ability appropriate 3. Non lethal self defense tool like this amzn.to/3RuSM8l I will make you a video to train with. You can email me at pasquinilli@hotmail.com for more help too. Thank you.
“You might never use that” Nah. All of this is useful. When the stick is moving fast you have to get out of its way. You have to move your body. That helps train you how to move out of the way of any moving thing, including another person.
Thanks!
Another brilliant video Matt. Thank you 🙏🏻 Hardwood umbrella works a treat too.. especially in the U.K.
