Hi Chuck! we used the ADS Sump Basin on our back yard and it collapsed! one of the connection to the sump pump seamed to got loosed and maybe that created some vacuum but it really collapsed and we had to remove it. Now we will try to reinstall the system but this time with the JACKEL 18 in. x 22 in. Perforated Sump Basin

Chuck, I’ve only ever installed one sump basin and I installed the Zoeller M98 and it worked great! One mistake I made though was not completely covering the sump basin. It floated up on me but I learned a lesson.
You can cut a 4" hole in the bottom and add a threaded 4" coupling. That will allow excess water to fill from the bottom without pulling sand or debris into the tank. That will also allow some water to remain, as weight, while supporting the pump off the bottom. That will really help stop the basin from becoming a "boat" in high water levels.
Optionally, aluminum or copper grounding rods can be driven through the side walls, as vertical as possible. That will help secure the basin down, better than the ribs alone.
If you know there is a constant rising water table, you can also use two steel cork-screw anchors through the bottom. They only require a small hole to get the spiral rod through. Then you can add extra secure tethers, also steel parts, from the anchor handles, to the top lip or a mounting ring.
Is that 4 in coupling placed as a riser within the basin? Can I get the same effect by drilling half inch holes in the bottom and lower sides of the basin and wrapping landscape cloth around the basin?

I use the zoeller pump you recommend and the ADS HDPE sump basin. I am in Arizona so it is only used a few times a year. The top will be buried about 3" in my courtyard. My question is how to seal the lid? there is no gasket and I am sure silk will get into it. BTW your recommendation on the 2" hole saw for 1 1/2" pipe was great, it fits perfectly

Question, should I use that fabric if I have clay? Back yard is all clay after about 3-4". I went 18" to keep fall. Have just started and only used #57 rock Around corrogated, perferated pipe so far. Some of the back yard I'm not planning on covering with sod as it's at the very back and catching water from the neighbors yard which is much higher to mine. Same with the north side of house. But not as much clay on that side. My drain is almost all the way around house. Already have some foundation probs as well. Hpuse is not on a slab, but is a brick house with a crawl space. I'm thinking use the fabric on the side of house only, where there's more dirt. Lots of rock either way. And a sump to get the curb on one side due to no fall. Also using a lot of catch basins. Would be nice if I could tie in the down spouts to pererated pipe, but read that was a No No, to run solid pipe for that. More digging lol.
Is there any reason to bury the discharge line other than cosmetics? I have a subsurface drip emitter septic system and am trying to avoid interacting with those lines throughout the entire yard. Located in North Texas. This is incredibly insightful and has convinced me that I can achieve a project that I’ve been scared to start for several years. Thank you for posting.

Hey Chuck, Really love your videos. I'm going to give a French drain a shot. I was looking and the perforated pipe is $24 per 10' and the fabric is $24 per 100 ft. Then, I would need the gravel. I was comparing going that way to the easy flow tubing which is about $80 per 10'. I'm like $27 per 10' plus the gravel price seems a lot cheaper than the easy flow for a DYI. It might offset due to labor for you as a contractor. What do you think? I'm thinking it would take about 10 bags of gravel for 10 ft. which would actually be about the same cost as the easy flow. I guess I answered my own question. For the same cost, I should go with the easy flow since it's easier. Let me know if I'm looking at it correctly. Thanks for all the help you give us.

Not needed
I use the ribbed basin for sumps that need to be setup to drain water from under crawlspaces. I cut out the bottom with a 6" hole, so water can drain away when possible. That also stops the basin from becoming a "boat", causing it to slowly pop up out of the ground. It helps act as a bridge from surface to deep sub-surface sand. Keeps water away from the tight web of tree roots too.
I just wish they made a smaller or two-stage pump for these setups. One for 250-500 gph, for slow filling water. Then another for 1000-3000 gph, for flooding rain water. I thought about using a pond pump, but they really are overpriced and under-developed, compared to sumps.
Wow, I *really* like how you teach, and show all sorts of tips and details, not assuming anyone is an expert. I'm certainly not. I'm just a middle-aged lady without a lot of practical knowledge, but trying to get there and figure out how much I can do on my own to save money and protect my property. My home was unfortunately built kind of in a flood zone in 1960, and the backyard becomes a lake during rainstorms, with no exit for the water - the curb is higher than the yard! Was thinking of a sump basin, and then let the pump direct the water over the curb to the street, or else collect into a little tower for my garden. But I've been intimidated to try myself, and dismayed by contractor costs. This video has given me encouragement. Thank you!
I've just dug a hole for my ADS basin in heavy clay soil. Do i need to drill any holes in the bottom or side walls? Once I fill some of the dirt back to fill the gap between the basin and hole shouldn't the wall ribbing and weight of the M98 keep the basin from moving? In another of Chuck's videos, i saw he put some weights on the lid for a while. I guees to literally let the basin settle down. Thanks in advance.

Chuck, would you mind explaining the best way to add a catch basin (the 12 inch sq) to an existing French drain? The flow would be a straight line thru just to catch surface water, thanks so much! Big fan! Is it as simple as just cutting the pipe as a pass thru?

As long as your drain is under the frost line (approximately 36” in mass.) you should be fine.
French drains don’t need to have a slope correct? They can just be installed around the perimeter of your home level all the way to the basin?
Can I bury my catch basin if I completely cover it with the cloth? I keep hearing that the catch basin isn't intended to deal with surface water, so why have it exposed?

If the surface water doesn't soak down to the gravel on top of the pipe, then why put the gravel on top? Couldn't you just put the gravel in the trench, put in the perforated pipe, and back fill with dirt?

dont understand in one video your sayin dont use fabric around pipe that it doesnt work and wont drain properly and in other videos your sayin use it, so your obviously getting some sort or reward or payment from these fabric companys your advertising. i was enjoying your videos until the advertising started
I could be mistaken, but I believe he says DO NOT DIRECTLY wrap pipe with fabric, but ALWAYS use fabric around the gravel around the pipe. The fabric stops silt and fine sediment from entering the pipe, but if directly against the pipe, it will act as a plug. With greater surface area and the gravel as a buffer, it is less likely to become 100% blocked and the pipe will always remain unrestricted with the gravel in front of it.
Just because you don’t understand the man, you don’t have to accuse him of selling out for advertising. Maybe it’s you who misunderstood what he’s saying.
You don't need fabric... even the best designed french drain is only temporary and will clog... it may be in 5 years... it may be in 25.. but it will clog... the fabric is just an added expense... unless you have a bunch of extra cash you dont need it... just make sure to install cleanout t's to power wash the drain annualy.. remember the gravel trench is your drain... The pipe just helps the water along..
