Excellent video Lyn! I really enjoyed learning with all the great information you shared. Here in Georgia we get pretty cold weather in winter. It doesn't really snow, we get ice at times. I just moved my cactus collection from my kitchen window to my dining room window. I keep my house at 70F during the winter. I hope it just a little cooler for overwintering for their dormancy. Great video Lyn!!! Hope winter isn't too bad for you guys. Love the shots of the melocactus cephalium with the light shining through the fruit!!! Seeing the seeds inside . Very cool!!! Yes I've seen where people winter cactus in their garage or basement. I just can't bring myself to do something like that. Even though I know that people do well doing so. The only plants I " store" are my agaves. I can stick them into a corner or under a bench with little light and they do well. Kinda saves a bit of prime space for cactus and Euphorbias. Just a few minutes ago I had to fire up the wood stove when I came home from work. Warm & dry yesterday, cold and rain today!!! This morning was 56°F. When I got home, 41°F! Greenhouse was still in the mid 50s °F. So not too bad. Looks like colder temps are more or less here to stay for a bit. Here we go again guys!!! Thanks for sharing your great video Lyn!!! Wonderful look at your cactus collection! Given me some hope that I'll do the correct thing this winter. The humidifier seems a good idea as my little sensor says 80 most days and that's with the door always open!
So happy you love the cactus collection, the dehumidifier works an absolute treat and much more affordable to use than our elec heater, it also adds a bit of heat and keeps the air nice and dry, although its so warm here for October it feels like the Summer has come back haha, we have the cool fan on in the polytunnel today as its 32c in there, crazy warm for October in Ireland but at least it makes the Winter feel less long :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
Hi Lyn! That's a wonderful video showing us all your wonderful cactus! Thanks for the information on preparing the cactus for winter! Good to know when to stop watering for the winter rest! So helpful, I have one desert cactus-pin cushion cactus- in a kitchen which has an unheated addition. Its on a plant table, under plant lights in a southern window. Should I put it on the windowsill? Kitchen gets to mid-sixties at night this season with humidity 40-60%. Thanks Lynn!
So happy you loved the video Molly :-D yes your Pin cushion cactus will overwinter really well in the windowsill, the pin cushion cacti ( Mammillarias ) are very cold hardy and are very adaptable to both cool and warmer night temps and the humidity sounds perfect too, thanks so much Molly for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
Good guide Lyn 🙂 Keeping em crossed for a mild winter again, had a minus 7 a few years back 😲 Could do without that again, it killed one of our Carpobrotus 👻👻
I am praying for a mild Winter this year too Ziggy :-D as the cost of heating the polytunnel would be like taking out a mortgage haha :-D thats a shame that the cold winter killed one of your Carpobrotus, I remember the awful freezing cold Winter of 2009/10 it was bitterly cold, if we got a winter like that again I wouldn't know what to do, luckily I had all my cacti indoors them years but I remember on Xmas day in 2010 waking up to burst pipes and ice INSIDE the windows of our house, we had to call the Landlord over to fix the pipes and no time to make Xmas dinner we had beans on toast instead of Xmas dinner that day hahaha, thanks so much Ziggy for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon Oh blimey Lyn 😯 I remember that winter too, the Gulf Stream diverted round the other side of Greenland but no one thought that worthy of reporting on the news 😨 I was living in a caravan with no heating 😲 Cheers Lyn 😊😊🌵🌵
Crazy times in Ohio. Most of the days now are sunny, and my plants are getting more sunlight than we've had all year. My plant windows are south facing and my apartment is actually above the treetops, so I get no shade. The sun starts to hit the right hand side of my plant table at ten o:clock in the morning and leaves the left hand side at five in the evening. (Sundown is about 6:30) As a result, if I close the windows, the temperature in my plant room gets above 30 degrees Celsius, and humidity is 25% or below. Most of my cacti are OK, but other plants are suffering. My bougainvillea just dried up and died. My moisture loving plants are wick fed, and I have to fill the reservoirs twice a week. This will probably change when cloudy weather sets in next month, but right now, I have to hustle.
Thats such a shame about your Bougainvillea Emmit, it can be so challenging when we are growing our plants and trying to make them all as happy as possible in our environments, thats fantastic you have south facing windows that is perfect for cacti and with the low humidity, but is a challenge for your other plants, here in rainy Ireland our houseplants do really well with the humidity inside the house in Winter but our cacti hate it, and having to hustle and juggle is the best thing we can do when we have a lot of different plants that all want different care haha, thanks so much Emmit for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Ohio for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Great video, very informative. I live in İstanbul/turkey. How cold/hot gets your temperatures there? Istanbul is around 35C summer, -5C winter, with 4 season…
So happy you loved the video and found it informative :-D in Ireland our Summers are usually about 17-25c and in Winter around 2-8c, but this Summer we had it unusually very warm, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
Lyn, what would you suggest for me? The temperatures here in AZ and CA have started to cool off significantly. The daytime highs are in the mid 70s to low 80s F/ 21-26 C. The nights are hitting 55 F/ 12 C. I have mine under grow lights. Since I'm going to be moving, and with the cooler temperatures, I've slowly backed off watering. The temperatures in CA where I'm going are pretty much the same as where I'm at in AZ. Would you suggest I stop watering completely, now?
Hi Ashley :-D I bet you are so excited to be moving to California soon, yes I would stop watering your cacti now because although the day temps are still nice and warm, the days are getting shorter and stopping watering will help them to slow down their growth and enter a dormancy, they may not completely go into dormancy if the daytime temps are still warm but stopping watering will slow down their growth and help to prevent any thin growth, thanks so much Ashley for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Arizona for a wonderful weekend XXXX
Hi there :-D the good news is the dehumidifier only raises the temperature by about 2 degrees, but it can be a bonus for the cold nights that are not very cold as it saves us having to use the heater as the heater uses up more electricity than the dehumidifier, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX
I try to overwinter my two small cacti in our basement. But I always worry because our basement does have one vent in the ceiling so when we have heat going, its hard to get the temperature down there below 60F (15C) . Plus the two basement windows are very insulating. So it could be below 30F outside, but the coldest it gets in there would maybe be down to 57F at most. Luckily its almost always very low humidity in there, only rising slightly if the weather outside is rainy. My Echinopsis still bloomed this summer but it later than previous time.
Thats wonderful you got blooms on your Echinopsis this summer, I have noticed my Echinopsis flowered quite late in the Summer and I still have one coming into bud as the weather in Ireland has been so warm for October, but I don't think the buds will go into flower, thats fantastic your basement is low in humidity and your cacti should overwinter well in there even if the temperature doesn't drop below 60F, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon HeyI just thought of this today. Would aloe plants that are normally kept indoors benefit from a winter rest like cacti? If they go can go dormant, would keeping them warm with lots of light prevent that?
@@Plantsandtoyhorses Aloe plants can be a little bit more trickier in Winter because I have found that some of my Aloes go dormant in Winter and some of them still grow and flower in the Winter, I even have some from the same varieties of Aloe that flower in Winter even in my cold polytunnel and the others stay dormant, Aloes are great because they are very adaptable in the Winter to both being kept warm and in lots of light and water, and also if they are being kept cool and dry, if your Aloe is being kept indoors I would still give your Aloe just a light watering every 3-4 weeks, but avoid any fertilising until the Spring, your Aloe will still be fine if given lots of light and warmth in Winter, but its still best to reduce the watering to just a light water once every 3-4 weeks, thanks so much for your wonderful comments and support and have a wonderful plant powered Wednesday today XXXX

i just have a quickly question for anyone who can answer, are blue torch cacti the only cacti that can develop a blue pigment, because I have two cactus clusters of 4 and both of them have a blue and green skin, but the other features like their areoles are a lot bigger and off colour, and the stem is too round, so i’m not completely sure.
Hi there, there are quite a few other cacti that can develop the blue pigment including Myrtillocactus and some of the other cereus types like the Polaskia and also some types of Trichocereus, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
Thats wonderful your Easter cactus and Aloe vera are all nice and warm inside for the Winter, you can still give them a light watering in Winter especially the Easter Cactus as its an Epiphytic cactus, I give my Easter Cacti a light watering in Winter if they start to show signs of the leaves shrivelling, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
Hi there, I keep all of my Desert cacti dry with no water until the Spring, but still lightly water my Epiphytic cacti like the Christmas and Easter Cactus, but it can depend on where your cacti are kept, if they are indoors in a warm room or you live in a warm arid climate and they start to show signs of shrivelling you can give a light watering, but ideally its best to keep them all dry from mid September until early April, here is a link to a video I have made on 'Watering Cacti in Winter' : ua-cam.com/video/S_4Fi-OMeg4/v-deo.html XXXX

Thanks Lyn great video always good to gain more knowledge from other cactus growers

Hi and as always thank you for sharing your beautiful plants and knowledge :) The thanksgiving cactus you assisted me with, is now in bud :) My polly lounge remains between T 45/65 and H 60/65 unheated. I do use the dehumidifier when home and not away working. Thanks for the info on the Melo ;) Sending yourself and Hans much gratitude and happiness :)
Thats awesome news your Thanksgiving cactus is in bud now, and I bet you are so looking forward to seeing the blooms very soon, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
Lynne, your videos are so helpful. And timely. I stop watering my cacti in early October and as a result of your video need to check whether mine will be ok in an unheated glasshouse. Between you, Daz at CactiMania and Ana at CactusCaffeine, there’s a wealth of skills and knowledge shared!
Awwwww thank you so very much for your wonderful words, and so happy you love Daz and Ana too, they are awesome growers and friends, the weather here in Ireland has been incredibly warm for October and the polytunnel is at 32c today with the sun on the roof and 17c outside, I think the Summer has returned haha, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
It's that time of year again 🎃😄🌵 love these videos Lyn!

The Thanksgiving cactus look beautiful all in buds...what a wonderful show they will make when they are all in bloom! Thanks for sharing! Have an amazing evening my friends Lyn and Hans! Lots of love and happiness!
So happy you loved the Winter preparation video Sylvia :-D I can't believe that its almost Winter again haha, although the weather in Ireland and U.K has been so warm and it feels like the Summer has come again haha, I am so looking forward to seeing the Thanksgiving cacti in bloom, they really lift up the short days of Winter when all the other cacti are sleeping haha, thanks so much Sylvia for your wonderful friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Malta for a fantastic afternoon and weekend ahead XXXX
@6:00 There he is! The old man. I was a bad boy back some time ago, where I stumbled across multiple C.S. growing in a flower bed and took a cutting without asking. Only once though. I'm just a small time thief.

Question, doesn't the dehumidifier raise the temperature in your poly tunnel? Wouldn't that be a hurtle to overcome for the cacti to go dormant?

How often to water cactus during winter?
Hi there, I keep all of my Desert cacti dry with no water until the Spring, but still lightly water my Epiphytic cacti like the Christmas and Easter Cactus, but it can depend on where your cacti are kept, if they are indoors in a warm room or you live in a warm arid climate and they start to show signs of shrivelling you can give a light watering, but ideally its best to keep them all dry from mid September until early April, here is a link to a video I have made on 'Watering Cacti in Winter' : ua-cam.com/video/S_4Fi-OMeg4/v-deo.html XXXX
