    This is an excellent video, Lyn ! I am pretty new, and I have tried to gather all this information by asking questions and reading posts on line. I have found that there are too many ideas held by people that are only applicable to their particular situation, but do not consider all of the different situations people/growers find themselves in. You have been careful in this offering to at least touch on the majority of situations and applications. Thank you for your thoughts, guidelines and time.

    That heater fan seems great! Winter always makes me nervous even when I know I've gotten many through before. Reacclimating them in the spring is a bit of a chore too. I wish I had an ideal situation for winter but I just bring mine inside without significant light or dark and trickle water every month or so to help the roots in my arid climate. Sending sunshine and great vibes from New Mexico

    All my Windows are Southern oriented. My balcony is closed. The range of temperatures during the winter varies between 18- 24C. Given these conditions should I respect the rule "No watering till beginig of April? Thank you! 😊

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Годину тому

      Thats fantastic you have Southern windows which is perfect for the lighting, I would still keep your cacti mostly on the dry side over the winter, but because of the warmer temperatures you can give them a light watering if they show any signs of shrivelling, a light watering once every 4-6 weeks will be safe to give them with temps of18-24c, thanks so much Ariana for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXXX

    Love that you explained about the daylight changes. Does that also apply to succulents (the not watering)? I've got some blue chalk sticks Everest in my unheated bedroom, and an aloe parvula in my unheated kitchen. Lol! It sounds like I live like a monk, but the fact is the heat from the rest of the house is enough without heating those two rooms. Shall I not water them all winter then?

    • @M_SC
      @M_SC 3 дні тому

      This Canadian doesn’t understand how you cannot heat particular rooms.

    • @brocktoon8
      @brocktoon8 3 дні тому

      @@M_SC 😂 This flat has underfloor heating which is turned on room by room. There's no door on the kitchen, so the heat from the main body of the house just passively flows in there. My bedroom of course does have a door, but due to my having two dogs who need free range, that door is always open as well. Thus, the two rooms, even though totally unheated, feel comfortable from the ambient heat that flows in there from the main thoroughfare of the house. Frankly, my bedroom does get pretty damn cold at night, but I like it that way, lol! I sleep better in the cold for some reason. I hope that clarifies. ^^

      Hi there :-D I stop watering the majority of my Succulents over winter but I do still give a light watering to some of my aloes and Echeverias and Crassulas that show any signs of shrivelling, I notice that many Aloes and other succulents will still grow and often flower during the winter months, but its still best to keep them mostly dry over winter to prevent them from growing elongated, but if your Aloe and your blue chalk sticks Everest show any signs of shrivelling you can definitely give them alight watering over the winter months, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXXX

    Can I ask how well your poly tunnel stands up to wind and snow. I live in Minnesota and during winter we can get 20mph winds and sometimes over 12" of snow. I've been thinking of getting a poly tunnel but don't want it to blow away, rip or collapse especially overnight. We can also have temps of -20f or below plus windchill, I'm wondering if the poly wrap would stiffen and sprit or tear because of the cold temps and wind/windchill.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  56 хвилин тому

      Hi Stephen :-D the good news is the polytunnel has been great for the strong winds and storms as it has been bolted down into the ground with the metal poles, but the cover has got ripped and torn with a few holes and rips due to birds landing on the roof and twigs flying, if I was to get another polytunnel I would definitely choose a polycarbonate greenhouse as they are much stronger with the covers and would be much stronger to support the weight of snow on the roof, a polytunnel is great for short term for a couple of years, but a polycarbonate greenhouse/polytunnel would be much better for longer lasting, thanks so much Stephen for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Minnesota for a terrific Thursday XXXXX

    Let's say I have a rattail cactus granfted on an opuntia, should I treat it as an opuntia or a rattail cactus?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Годину тому +1

      Hi there, its best to treat your cactus an a Rattail cactus, the good news is the care requirements are pretty similar with their watering but Rattail cactus do need more warmth than many of the Opuntia do, but a minimum winter temperature of 5c /41F and dry will be absolutely fine for your Rattail cactus, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXXX

    Hi I understand all your video, but I also have tropical plants and placed them in a greenhouse together 😮 how can I make it function without loosing plants!
    This year I started with tropical plants & now it’s like 1/3 cactus, and may be 15% Hoyas 15% succulents and rest are tropical!
    I placed cactus, succulents & Hoyas in sunny spots, like 100% day light and tropical in less day light.
    Some already dormant as leaves went brown like begonias, geraniums. But I also have ferns 😳😱😩 so, I honestly do not want to loose my cactus as I have them for many years 😊 it’s only a greenhouse and temperature inside is warm, also heater is set to turn on when temperatures drop below 45 Fahrenheit degrees inside. I have two jade plants that are about 1 yard tall, these two also for few years with cactus been together, but my tropical plants are my issue now because I placed them all together 😳 no other way to winter them as they’re outdoors (from march through October maybe)

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Годину тому

      Hi Maggie :-D the good news is that you can overwinter all your plants together in the greenhouse with no problems, keep your cacti dry with no watering but you can still water any of your tropical plants that need it over the winter, I know quite a lot of growers who have a selection of many different types of tropical plants and have cacti in the same greenhouse for the winter and they will be absolutely fine, and thats perfect with the heater that is set to turn on if the temps drop below 45F, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Годину тому

      Hi Mark :-D I have grow lights over my plants in my office and I still keep them all mostly unwatered over the winter, I do sometimes still have to give them a light watering if any show any signs of shrivelling usually by the Jan/feb time, but I give them just enough water to stop them shrivelling to much, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXXX
