If you told me months ago that an Adam Sandler movie would be more funnier, heartbreaking, and overall a better film than Disney's 100th anniversary movie I would've laughed.
Disney is just out of ideas and any sense of imagination/fun at this point. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Across The Spiderverse, the Super Mario Bros Movie, and this movie were breaths of fresh air.
@@spirithero2446 Heck, the duck movie from Illumination, *Illumination*, coming up looks better than that, too.
@@Kaikaifilu1994Exactly. At least the story feels different and new. Nowadays, every Disney movie feels like the same. (Quirky teenage girl as the main character along with her animal sidekick, a “villain” who is either poorly written as a twist or being misunderstood, some magical force which controls the land, as well as unnecessary political preaching shoved in to try and get people to defend it.)
I dont think the movie was heartbreaking but it was just a pretty chill slice of life movie that did the cliche of liar reveal too.
And yet somehow I was surprised that it surpassed Disney's abysmal excuse of a 100th aniversary
@@noobmasterruben5167anime slice of life if you ask me which is actually fitting
If Adam Sandler can just randomly make a good movie like this, that means he's been trolling us with his bad movies.
The bad movies are just to make money to put into the actual projects he has passion for
@@hedgehog07productions91this exactly, there's a decent handful of his movies that aren't trash... He's famous for a reason, his bad films just get more attention cause there's so many of them
To be real, I say he shines when he's a voice actor.
Uncut Gems is another example
@@hedgehog07productions91 definitely feel like it's just an age thing now, too. man's older, knows what was panned, what wasn't, and probably thinks that a lot of what he did isn't funny any more.
I like how the kids have actual, realistic problems like overprotective parents, insecurities, not knowing when to stop talking, divorced parents, etc.
I connected so well with the “doesn’t know when to stop talking girl” in the sense of being on the autism spectrum.
It made me happy thinking that she maybe was meant to be autistic rep. And in my eyes good rep.
I liked that the preschoolers were just hyperactive deformed little beasts whose heads were bigger than the ones of the older kids.
Just like in real life!
I laughed so much at the scenes with the Kindergarteners 😅 little beasties
The lore is that the human species has their eyes move to the sides of their head to shield them from predators at a young age, and when they reach 10 years, their eyes go to the front of their head
it's refreshing that an Adam Sandler comedy is actually good and put into the effort with it's characters and morals Solid 8/10 it's a good Netflix animated movie
Fr. I think the last Adam Sandler movie I actually enjoyed was The Longest Yard.
@@spirithero2446 No Hotel Transylvania 1 or 2?
Oh, yeah, can’t forget those. 👍🏻
@jazzratoon the first one was good, the second one was just alright I guess, we dont speak about the 3rd and 4th ones....
@@silverkuroma🧛♂️>👱♂️
Leo is probably the best take on the talking animal trope I’ve ever seen. It’s played up a bit but it’s not the entire pull of the movie, there’s nuance beyond “haha look at the lizard talk” that makes it feel really special
nice
Written by legit comedian for kids
the fact that the tortoise is named after a Pokémon clearly made me smile!
I also noticed as well. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed.
Imagine if Bill Burr played the ACTUAL Squirtle in a Pokemon movie. I think it surprisingly fits if Squirtle were to talk. ^^
Now that you mention it, that reminds me of a Robot Chicken skit.
Yeah I did laughed at that fact
@@emmanuelcarter3551leader of the Squirtle squad
The fact that Adam Sandler could actually make a movie this good (as opposed to just acting in one, like Uncut Gems) just makes it even more frustrating with all the other crap he puts out.
I'm starting to think he just takes projects that interest him or his kids - I think he's kind of heading into Nic Cage territory. I do like his Murder Mystery movies bc they're nice with the brain turned off.
Honestly he is very good at filmmaking, yes there are bad movies, but not every film is gonna be a smash hit. Like Disney is really crashing down bad in theaters….
I suspect most of his movies are intentionally dumbed down. There are two kinds of people: 1. People who like watching characters who are less intelligent than themselves, and don't want to accept that there are people much more intelligent than themselves, and 2. People who are annoyed by characters dumber than themselves, and feel inspired by characters smarter than themselves. Unfortunately the first group is much larger than the second group.
@@SICProwlwell he owns his own film making company and he is the main writer on all his movies so he only does movies he finds funny and enjoys
Adam Sandler is a smart guy and a competent filmmaker, but I think it's a bit much to expect he make great stuff all the time from an artistic perspective. He likes to make what's fun to him, and he likes making opportunities to essentially go on vacation while doing some easy film work to pay for it. I think expecting oneself to go above and beyond for every project is what leads to artists getting creative burnout, losing their grip on their mental health, and getting a super inflated ego. He found a creative approach that keeps him creating without being borderline masochistic, and I respect that.
Leo had TONS of heart. Like MY GOD, if you told me a decade ago that Disney's 100 year celebration movie was VOID of as much heart as an Adam Sandler animated musical about a wise schoolroom reptile I would have been skeptic. Now, after the damage caused by Iger, it's too realistic. Also, this was an Animal Logic film. Can't believe they worked with Netflix on this.
Not only did it have a good overarching message, it has many good messages throughout the movie. Realistic but didn't feel generic.
@@OReily08080 EXACTLY. It had genuine merit and even novel ideas as well.
Adam Sandler's films always had heart for the most part imo, it just doesn't resonate with many people cause of the humor. It's more of a case of Disney going downhill and then falling off a cliff around the same time Adam Sandler released a rare touching film.
@@madensmith7014 Jack and Jill, Little Nicky, Eight Crazy Nights? I don't think so.
It was a very sweet movie with a heartwarming message. I have a lot of teachers in my family and I know it resonated with my sister who is in her first year as a lead teacher. I like how Leo cared about the kids and wanted to help them with their problems and was sensitive to them. It was really wholesome too how the substitute teacher also had redeeming qualities and her goal was to inspire students too and she learned from the events too. It had a lot more heart than Disney's Wish did. At least in Leo I feel like it was built on some actual real life experiences from teachers and kids.
My entire family is basically made up of teachers, so the part with the substitute talking about how much her teacher inspired her made me tear up a bit
I just like how they draw little kids like gremlins
For reals it was funny every time they were on screen
Every once in a while Adam Sandler makes a good film to remind people that he can whenever he wants.
Yeah iirc the bad movies he makes are really just an excuse to bring his friends on vacation in different places, and to fund for the bigger passion projects so- he's just having a blast
I love that the artstyle looks like like 2000's 3d animated movie. It didn't try soooo hard on photorealism, but it's easy to look at and charming. The colors aren't blasting my eyes with oversaturated hues, and lighting looks natural and not hazy, over dramatic like modern pixar. I hope this style makes a comeback. Photorealism in 3d animation is soooo tired.
*When a movie with the voice of Adam Sandler as a class-pet lizard is better than the latest Disney animated film.*
Come the f*ck on, Disney.

Not gonna lie, but I think the trailer is what really brought people to wanna watch it, which to be honest was spot on perfect. This has been a very inspiring movie in an incredible way. This is got to be a perfect comeback for Adam Sandler. I still love his movies Adam Sandler hell I will not forget his song he made honoring his friend Chris Farley. Now to answer what kind of reptile Leo is, he’s an iguana.
Eh, an iguana with other lizard characteristics, like a chameleon’s tongue (iguanas are actually mostly vegetarian).
But here, it actually works.
From the wiki, he is a Tuatara. They are consider a living fossil and can live up to over 100 years old.
In the movie, one of the class parents mentioned that *Leo* is a tuatara, a lizard-like reptile. 🦎
No, the movie explicitly states that Leo is a tuatara
Tuataras aren't lizards, though, and I'm pretty sure it's illegal to transport them from New Zealand where they're a protected species by the government.
Leo's really just an amalgamation of different lizards, nothing more.
I see a lot of people taking the Tuatara remark seriously. A parent calls Leo a Tuatara (a reptile thats not a lizard), despite the fact that he is an Iguana (which is a lizard). Tuataras are native to New Zealand and are never held as pets, while Green iguanas are very common in captivity, including as pets.
Which also explains the misunderstanding of Leo's "old" age
Except Leo is a tuatara. First off, Leo is far too small to be a green iguana which only live up to an average of 15 - 20 years. Leo on the other hand is 74 years old and tuataras can live up to a century like it says in the movie. It even says he's a tuatara on the official Wikipedia page for the movie.
@@burfdaeboiTF2 Well, that's stupid. Everything apart from the age and size point to him being a green iguana. Every aspect of his design, he can throw off his tail as a defence mechanism, the fact that he's kept as a pet, the fact that there's hundreds of them in the Florida everglades after being released there.
Neither the Tuatara or the Green iguana has a projectile tongue though
Why can't we just accept the fact he is a new species of reptile at this point because apparently BOTH SPECIES PEOPLE REFER TO HIM AS DON'T HAVE THE SAME TRAITS AS HE DOES
@@burfdaeboiTF2ok so that is confirmed huh? That’s the only thing that I found weird about this movie. I know that tuataras are an endangered ancient reptile found only in NZ so I thought it was weird this school had one as a pet. Then when Leo went to the Glades there were other tuataras out there.
I’m from SWFL, while there is an invasive population of green iguanas, there is definitely not one of tuataras. My thought was that Leo is actually a green iguana, since that would make the most sense to why there were others of his kind in the Everglades and to why the parent who said that about his age was wrong.
@@MrTieskwell to be fair neither have an inflatable dewlap that turns different colors, or color changing like that female.
I came across this movie about 2 weeks ago when my little sisters were watching it. I joined when I recognized Adam Sandler's voice and I honestly did not expect to enjoy it so much. It was so sweet and wholesome, and a lot funnier than I expected. Most likely will give it another rewatch.
I also gotta say i loved that the kids had kidproblems that they treated like real problems because they were kids! They let the kids be kids without making it cringe, it was enjoyable
When the kindergarteners showed up for the first time, I legitimately laughed for almost a minute straight. No joke. I hadn't seen any previews or anything for it, I just kinda watched it on a whim. My brother told me that this movie had some "crackhead kindergarteners" but I didn't realize how serious he was until they showed up.
When an Iguana voiced by Sandler does a better job at parenting then the kids parents
Congratulations to Sabrina for getting her own movie. I know that stepping out of Chloe's shadow was very hard for her.
LMAOOO
Omg the whole movie I thought she looked familiar!! Thank you
ok but the weird thing is that Leo is supposedly a tuatara (which isn't even a lizard!) and yet he has a chameleon tongue, gecko feet and iguana spines. then again the turtle can take off his shell like clothes so i guess it's just that kind of movie lol
tuataras have spines too actually. but yeah he has a lot of weird features real tuataras don't have
I think that’s because he’s not actually a tuatara, but an iguana. The parent that tried to label him was actually wrong. His entire existential crisis was because of parent being confidently wrong, which imo is actually kinda funny in itself
@@jenniferlynch6891Leo himself says that..
@@darianstarfrog yeah but some people seem to be missing that but, so I was just pointing it out, and stating why I liked that bit of the movie

I Like how this is the Antithesis of Eight Crazy Nights;
1. That movie is Mean-Spirited, This one is Wholesome
2. Leo's Lovable; while The Human Protagonist of 8CN is a D-Bag
3. That one was 2d; and THIS one is 3D
Eight Crazy Nights was still fire doe
Thaaaaat's a technical foul
Eight Crazy Nights felt too short as well, I feel like they’d be able to develop Davey and the other characters if the movie was longer, instead of it all happening within 2 songs.
SHAVING THE CHEST HAIR
honestly, I love this in more ways than you can imagine.
It would be so easy for it to have gone the way of a Madagascar clone, of one creature going for freedom of the wild and ending up taking everybody else with them.
Freedom/To the Wild escape stories are all rather frequent so they bore me somewhat-but the idea that he found his purpose in where he lives and helps others is very much more heart warming. I enjoyed the bait-and-switch element of it all, and the trailers weren't being a b and tricking me into thinking it was the other tired type of plot.
Yeah, I still have a special place in my heart for Madagascar, which makes it pretty exhausting to see how many people tried to copy its success.
The drone is the best tsundere in the entire movie and it was so funny that it has a crush on the f*kin turtle
this movie surprised me on its great characters, i was expecting the kids to be random and forgettable but they all had personalities and problems that made me like them! same with its message, it was heartwarming and just so real. love this movie lol
I watched it and it’s actually pretty dang good! With how bad most movies are being written these days it’s so refreshing to see something like an animated lizard give kids life advice while also not being preachy or annoying and being fun to watch even as an adult.

Honestly, the character Leo kinda reminds me of a psychiatrist I have named Steve who’s been really helping me out with all those issues I have in the best way possible. The entire movie reminds me of him.
And also, what the hell? I love musicals!
It's much better than I expected, it was very cute and fun. Solid 7/10 imo
This movie, to be majorly honest, turned out to be another one of those awesome movies that really teach us something rather than just being fun to watch. It reminds you of the importance of having an actual pet and how much meaning pets can give you in the long run.
THIS movie was so powerful to watch alone, that it pretty much flushed Disney down the toilet!
i love how they embrace the absurdity of the 'talking animal 'genre with the shit like 'yeah im gonna get dissected lmao'
The designs of the Kindergartners are so fricken funny
Leo is likely an Iguana
The parent mistakes him for a tuatara, a much different reptile that isnt found in florida
meanwhile iguanas, while invasive, are everywhere, including the everglades (where he sees more iguanas in the film)
to be honest the drone was my favorite character, not saying anything just doing typical overly safe drone stuff
You know, I love how this movie can be both funny and wholesome at the same time. My favorite funny parts of the movie definitely has to be Leo's face looking so goofy when he tuned out during that one girl who talks a lot, the animals going crazy when they were released, and the drone trying to eat some ice cream while feeling depressed.
Also I know that the songs in the movie might be unnecessary at first (despite this movie being a musical), but some songs actually do fit well with the lessons that Leo teaches the kids.
Honestly 100% agree! After a kinda of a downfall year in animation, this movie was such a breathe of fresh air. It was cute, funny, and the animation is pretty decent. It was also very relatable but also fun. A very great surprise from an Adam Sandler movie lol
I also did not know it was a musical going into it. But for me, I adore when I get a surprise musical. I didn't know Greatest Showman was a musical when I saw it in theaters and that blew my mind.
I loved that not only did Leo teach the kids things but they also taught him lessons. I was confused first about the song about crying since I thought "crying is for weaklings" is so outdated, til I saw the kid explaining to him that crying can be very good for you. And by the end he learned that lesson himself. Which seems very realistic to me if you think of Leo as an old man. Since for older people they did grow up with a "crying is weak" mindset and a lot of kids nowadays know better.
Overall, great movie!! I loved it!!
I was impressed with this film. I was expected it to another raunchy Sandler film only to get a family friendly animation that’s enjoyable. I guess working on those Hotel Transylvania movies really got Sandler to clean up his act.
I saw this movie and thought it looked like it might be kinda cute and then was surprised when i realised adam sandler was in it, but im glad it turned out to be a hit
I think this is the first Adam Sandler movie that I would unironically nominate for movie of the year, like it's pretty good, wholesome, has a good message, and actually is pretty good. I do agree with the music, though. I forgot them nearly instantly after watching it, but the message of the movie, and the overall quality of the movie is honestly pretty good.
uncut gems
It was creative, hopeful, and heartwarming. In other words, the opposite of almost everything else Adam Sandler made.
This movie deserves to have a sequel or its own series. When me and my siblings started watching it, I was just neutral with it, but then started to enjoy every single bit of it as the movie went on. If this was released back in 2018, this masterpiece would have definitely be my favorite movie of all time alongside the movie Wonder. Also, I was in fifth grade during 2018.
As far as animation goes, props to the lizard design - so endearing, I really liked him as a character.
Also props to the toddler designs - hilarious.
For the songs, they were just very Adam Sandler-y which I liked. They were very self aware. I’ll always remember the boo-freakin-hoo song. They treated the kids and their problems with respect. So much heart for a little animated movie.
Saw the movie while going through a bit of a low point and it really helped to boost my spirits. Can’t recommend it enough. It’s probably my favorite Adam Sandler movie of all time.
That grandpa / don’t cry scene made me cry then made me laugh immediately after 😂
It was surprisingly good, and actually really heartwarming. I admit I cried a bit.
It’s very rare to see an companion character at main character in Animation.
I think that’s why Leo is so special.
We have three plots in this Movie.:
1.fight for freedom
2.unlikely friendship
3. Conflict with buddy

I watched the movie last night, and honestly, it was amazing, way better than I was expecting
This movie knows its animated and really takes advantage of that and i respect it so much for that.
It's honestly one of the best movies that came out this year. I'd even put it as top 5 next to Oppenheimer, Barbie and Napoleon
Leo was pretty grounding, nice and a little bit nostalgic -- a great break from all the terrible stuff that's been out...

Adam Sandler is protected by so many layers of irony that he's untouchable
Ive seen theories that Adam Sandler makes meh movies so that he can get his acting friends a consistent paycheck, cuz he knows at least someone is going to watch. I respect it - especially in today's day and age when studios seem more intrested in hiring expensive celebrities for acting instead of actual actors
made me cry like three times
The Titanic scene was CRACKING me up 🤣🤣
When Sandler is doing voice-over work, he's much more likely to be putting in effort compared to his recent live-action films, which Sandler really only does if he wants to take a vacation wherever their filming and to arrange paychecks for his friends.
I had very VERY low expectations for a this netflix movie. But i realized very quickly it’s just AMAZING.
Honestly I do admit the movie was actually pretty decent in my opinion granted I did not like the music but overall the voice acting and especially the animation is pretty good so far can you at least it's way better than Disney's wish.
i felt like Sandler was tryna go for that "Disney musical" vibe. sure it may seem forced at first, but the way they structure the songs within the narrative carried its own charm imo
I haven't seen the movie yet so I'll probably check it out now when I get the chance.
Also, Smarty. That's an iguana, or as we call them back in Puerto Rico: Tree Chickens
@@JessDaHooman Huh, neat. A minor detail about this movie that I liked was how spot on they got about a lot of the Florida stuff. I was looking at the backgrounds to see how well they captured what the homes look like and what the flora is like down here and I was like “wow that is spot on, they either really did their research or someone on the team is from SWFL.”
Bonus points for making the main character animal a tuatara. It is both a cool animal that is rarely mentioned and nearly impossible to acquire so the pet trade won't completely destroy the species (hopefully). I didn’t realize it was an Adam Sandler film. I watched it with my kids and while I thought it was just some new crap put to Netflix, it wasn’t half bad. The animation models looked mediocre imo, but there was good pacing, it got me to laugh a few times (more than I can say for most Adam Sandler films)
Overall, I enjoyed it. I don’t want to watch it again, but if it’s on, I won’t turn it off
The script definitely should've been looked over. When Adam Sandler said "Slay that science fair" in a smoker Dracula voice, I left the room. I also don't like how the turtle best friend suddenly becomes jealous over Leo's popularity. It felt like it was just there to reveal the liar trope many movies have done in the past. (those also sucked.) Leo had a good reason to hide the truth, and everyone is upset? The animal can literally speak, why would you be upset if he doesn't want people to know. "But I felt special" is a dumb excuse to punish Leo with and the whole movie should have had the whole second half changed. I believe the turtle should've tried to convince Leo that it isn't an animal's place to help people out, since animals have never talked to people and how he is only wasting the last days of his life stressing over others. Leo should've then had a moment like Austin Moon from Sing, where the students try to prove how his advice helped them grow and be better versions of themselves. It is sad to see this movie fall into lame tropes and boring finales. (An apology is the most dry way of character growth) I love the concept of the film, and kids can really learn allot when they see characters who struggle similarly to themselves. (With obvious comedic characteristics, since this is a kids film.) If only they had put more budget on the script than on an celerity actor.

Weird nitpick, but I always wish pet movies would show the pets living in proper habitats instead of just a clear box/bowl.
Whenever Summer was on the screen I kept thinking about Sabrina Raincomprix.
you guys remember Experiment 625 from the Lilo & Stitch series? The talking little yellow alien dude who possessed all of Stitch's incredible powers (super strength, fast reflexes, walk on walls etc) but refused to utilise any of these incredible talents and skills cuz he just wanted to chill and be lazy, and make yummy sandwiches
Adam Sandler reminds me of him
Leo was good even though it had lot of songs and it’s technically a musical It was a nice story! 7.8/10
It's a bit of a nod to a musical called Merrily We Roll Along which Jason Alexander was in for the 1981 version.

I totally agree with everything you say in your review ( which was excellent, by the way: fair, balanced, succinct and offering examples to support each contention that you make). I too am not an Adam Sandler fan ( I liked him as Opera Man in his SNL days, but that’s about it), but the trailer for “ Leo” intrigued me, so I watched it. I was astounded at just the things you cite: its plot grabs you, the characters are delightful, it’s touching ( I loved how Leo accepted his impending mortality before learning that he had much more than a year to live) and genuinely funny. When the little chatterbox saves them all from the menacing alligator by boring it into semi-consciousness with her non-stop talking, I laughed out loud. Great film , great review 👍🏾
Sandler has been cranking out some decent films as of late. Uncut gems was another good one, and I believe there was a film about basketball that he did recently that was fairly well received too.
The kindergarteners had me lmao every time we saw them
I haven’t had the chance to see this movie yet (I am planning to but I need to find the time for it) so I can’t personally give my own opinion on if I liked this movie or not however based on what I have seen on Twitter (without spoilers of course) where some people actually enjoyed it (but with minor critics of course mostly from what I have seen it was mostly the song numbers and some pacing issues) and where on the other side of the spectrum people hated it.
But honestly from what I have heard and seen. People seem to enjoy it which honestly. I might give the movie a shot when I can!
Sandler is a legend
I liked the film. I also found the commentator calling “Jack and Jill a “recent” Sandler movie humorous, it’s from 2011.
I’m gonna be honest this song sings more than trolls
This movie DOES have the right to be amazing! Just because it's not made by big old Disney doesn't mean that it can't be amazing. In fact, the only Disney movies I really enjoy are like Brave, Frozen and Encanto. Like, I think the masterpieces do often come from the smaller companies.
