It's finally here and it's 34 minutes long. As you can imagine, there was A LOT to cover! This is only part 1 as well. There will be two more parts coming out in the next two weeks. Hope you all enjoy! :D
I WISH I was this organized, it does seem like some notes are on different pieces of paper but the way they all fit together in the note book are . Almost art in their own sense !!!
The way the hives talk is so eerie. The 2 hugging each other is what looks like a final embrace, looking really sad or ashamed or something but looking at the shadow and laughing and talking hysterically, the complete contrast between the body language and actual dialogue is just so horrifying but strangely beautiful and tragic. The one who’s been stabbed by a hook in a final position of defiance being angry makes sense seeing what’s happened to them. It makes me wonder how they were deemed exceptional. The laughing ones maybe were able to laugh about the horrors they discovered, the angry one must have rebelled in their final moments, makes me wonder why some have arms and some dont. Some have spines and some don’t. Maybe it’s just a design choice, which is a beautiful choice.
And you noticed how they have "realistic artificial faces", like Friendly Shadow has, while every other citizen or robot has pratically no face? That says a lot. But I have no idea what it says.
The exceptional girl wanted to join hive. Maybe some of the exceptionals didn’t want to join the hive, but the exceptional girl forced them too, and they eventually ended up liking it.
What I find intriguing is that the "funny Hive" twins, as David labeled them, are more scary for me than the "Angry Hive" one. The Angry One wants to scare and maim, and as such gets a human (if a grim human) touch. These two? They are not that much "funny" as they are sarcastic and condescending, capable to de-value anything and everything. All the Angry Hive can do is crush the body. "Funny Hive" Twins crush souls.
Another detail is that the Hive talks without moving the mouth (as does the Shadow when in machine mode). Seems kinda obvious for a mechanical look. Yet it creates its own problems: in this way different parts of the Hive have no facial expressions and can convey feelings only via voice work.
I swear, if dead sound ever puts copies of his sketchbook/ idea book out, I WILL buy it without a doubt because I really would like to look closely at the drawings, the little captions, explanations, and just any other random things he puts in that thing would be so amazing to just look at and really I don't know, just experience the book in all of its coolness
"I will be covering the Friendly Shadow as a character..." YeS ""I will be talking more about the hive" Yeeeesss "I will finally cover the matriarch at its backstory..." "A whole film about the hive" *YESSS*
Unpopular opinion: I preferred it as just a picture. It had all the story it needed, a girl tries to befriend a monster, and the rest you can figure out for yourself. You just don't know, and that was the beauty of it. Adding an animation completes the story, and even required a new character to work. If the animation had been montage style of other monster examples, then finishing with an image of the girl and the monster, and Friendly Shadow appeared in a different animation, keeps the original story of the painting. Despite what I said, I love the animation and enjoy the story. I just don't love the context, and that's my opinion.
That was my feeling, too, while watching the short. The story has come full circle, and I'm so grateful that it has and watching the evolution up to it.
"Y'all ripped out ma arm" "But y'all sploded ma head!" "THAT *slaps notebook* THAT'S BLOODY GOING IN" I don't understand how is this man not directing movies yet
I love how David admits he doesn't know everything about autodale, there are things not even he knows for sure about it's world, it's like he's just as much of an observer of his own creation as we are in a way and I love that.
I like those kinds of artists. Most of the time, you are expected to know everything about your art and your story, like everything from beginning to end and every single detail was planned from the start. But I personally don't work that way, and I just let my imagination take me where it wants and answer questions along the way. It's really nice to hear someone like that too.
I didn't see the aggressive Freak as ruining their mystique as a whole. To me it is an individual of a species, of course it could be aggressive or have a different personality. Add on the fact it was very possibly scared or protective of the Young Freak, its behavior didnt seem out of place at all. If anything it further adds to their complexity. They aren't guaranteed to be passive OR aggressive. They aren't guaranteed to be in family groups or solo. The Freaks are an abnormality and aberration to Autodale. They do not play by prescribed roles like Autodale's citizens, Handymen, The Shadow, or even the Hive. Also I LOVE the sudden change to full 3D for the fight sequence. The camera movement is a bit jarring but it works perfectly.
Yeah the violence was set up well. It went from being blank when leaning against the wall to moaning stressfully when the friendly shadow started moving towards its child.
The jump to full 3D works so well because it indicates the adrenaline rush the FS is feeling. He’s stopped taking in the world around him as an unmoving static image without too much interest, and now sees it as a constantly shifting area due to his heightened awareness of the situation.
David's Sketch Book: *hyper detailed info on all of his creations, completely deticated and beautiful* My Sketch Book: haha funny sketch lemme skip 20 pages because they're a bit broken
You may want to try watching the anime series "Ergo Proxy". They are kind of having some common elements, e.g. post-apocalyptic scenery, walled cities, served by robots, ruled by cybernetic council and at the heart of the city there is a supernatural humanoid who keeps it alive.
Also, there's the fact that is subtlely mentioned "making of" videos for this show... He keeps saying the pronouns I & me... which probably means that he's making this all by himself. So if this was a Netflix show he would have to develop a new episode must sooner, than the 10 month period it took him to create "Friendly Shadow" And since I mentioned the probable fact that he's making this whole series by himself. It would be much more difficult to pull a feat such as that of all by yourself.
An interesting thought: Does adoption or fostering exist in this universe? Or if a child has no mother or parents at all (if the mom dies during childbirth, since they are the caretakers, the father would probably have to do what the mom in “Friendly Shadow” had to do) do the children die, become part of the hive, are they cast out, etc.? I’m so interested to see what happens next!
I think a foster system was mentioned but it's more voluntary, since it was mentioned that foster parents will take in the girl's brothers but not the girl
@@emilyaw3831 That's not why the girl wouldn't be taken in, I don't think. It was because she had seen too much and might have been traumatized, and so wouldn't have been good for society.
@@emilyaw3831 and so shadow should have shot her and moved on with his day while capturing the the juvenile instead of letting them both go to live in the wastes.
@@strawberrys0da714 the traumatized thing was a cover. They wanted to get rid of her because she could possibly become "exceptional". The freaks are evil and having someone who knows the truth would not be good for the good citizens of Autodale. You are safe here, in Autodale.
One of my favorite things about The Friendly Shadow was The Hivemind. Their back and forth reminded me of the idea of id, ego, and superego, which was ironically used to describe humanity. It highlighted the hypocrisy of the Hivemind in their hatred of humanity when they are very similar to humanity in it itself. Of course, that's just my interpretation, which could be easily incorrect.
Even if it is incorrect, it's SO WONDERFUL that an animation can be so thought provoking and open-ended to spawn interpretations from any kind of viewer! That is even more rare than it is impressive! We need more creatives putting their energy and thought into art like this.
I love how the “Freaks” look like a blend between a Kangaroo, a lizard, and a Tibetan Antelope with the second pair of arms to give it a more alien/mutation feel. Honestly a beautiful creature.
"I didn't have to give that women an oven mit, but the film is better, because she has an oven mit." The oven mit made the short film, the actor who played that oven mit deserves millions of dollars for his performance XD
I love the way hes building this lore about a burn world with the most plain people and even though hes go a whole world with the "things" and trillions of different concepts hes gone with the creations are questioning the system compared to the humans questioning it
Big questions: What is the matriarch What is the mayor What are the freaks How did autodale start What happened to the other towns What is the wasteland What do the fathers do at work
I wonder if the mayor is above hive, in terms of power. My guess is that the mayor is the guy running all the upfront stuff, like the production of handymen, when to execute the elderly, what is and isn't allowed, etc.
What happened to the child from "Freaks" to make it appear as a Freak upon entering Autodale? Why do the extraordinary people somply accept their untegration into the Hive? Do the members of Hive rot, decay, age or otherwise become unusable? What are the ensnaring plants along the wall of Autodale and seen during the reverse-gravity scene in "Freaks"?
There's a video talking about the freaks, really the freaks seem to be people who once lived in towns like Autodale. We see that in "Don't Feed the Freaks" there is a traveler who seeks to find "Town" a place that was labelled as a Utopia and everyone lived happily, he seeks to understand why people wanted destroy such places and when he reaches Autodale, he is shown as a freak. This is made known because the guy and the freak are wearing the same scarf. We are also shown that these other Towns that existed just like Autodale. They had their own terms and matriarchs such as 'glamorous'; It is hinted that these other towns like Autodale had flaws that were exposed and basically an uprising occurred between the people and the machines, thus now showing the destroyed Towns. It could be noted that there maybe other Towns that still exist, but at the moment, all we know is that Autodale isn't supposed to fall as told by the creator.
I love how you created every single one of the "hive" in a position and with a specific voice to reflect their personality and how seriously they take their position. The one at the center with a beating heart and a pair of lungs has a calming demeanor, oddly patient, and most likely decides how things run in "Autodale" once the other Hives have come to an agreement. The Hive that has one arm raised up and a hand almost clenched into a fist takes her position very seriously and will not tolerate nonsense. Unlike the first Hive mentioned, this Hive seems to be more impatient as seen when yelling at her fellow Hives to make a decision and what needed to be done. The arm raised up suggests bravery and pride in what she does. Then finally my favorite Hive, the twins. These two are the ones who don't take their position too seriously. How they embrace each other tells me that they have a tight bond between each other seeing as they act so similarly. And with their body positions it suggests they enjoy teasing the other Hives just to see their reactions. As for not taking their position seriously, it was shown that the two had began laughing and giggling while the other two Hives bickered about what should be done with Shadow. As I said these two take pure joy and amusement out of how others react in certain situations. "Some people just want to see the world burn." is a quote that constantly repeats in my head when I think of these two Hives embracing each other like sisters. I can't remember the other Hives but if I recall there was one that sounded a bit more quiet and even a bit shy. But I might be wrong. ;v; I love your animations though, keep up the good work!
I believe Angry Hive is a guy, actually. It was mentioned in the making-of video for Hive that some are guys and some are girls (and I do believe angry Hive was explicitly said to be a guy) but they all just got the voice of the original hive. It makes sense, seeing as the Hives are chosen for their minds, so that’s the only part that needs to be individual. Friendly Shadow is an outlier in that he has his own voice.
Of course that does bring up the question of who decides those poses. Do you think the exceptional citizens come in to be assimilated and Hive asks "So what kind of a look are we going for with here?" And exceptional guy would say "I'm looking for some high drama. Like Shakespearian actor drama." And Hive asks "Who tf is Shakespeare?" "I don't know but I wanna look like him." And boom, Angry Hive.
Personally, I find it interesting how "Neutral Hive", despite seeming to be more level-headed and reasonable, is also _front-and-center_ "on the bench", which would typically be the position of a Chief Justice or a Chairman or at least some sort of "first-among-equals". In a more ordinary dystopia, I'd expect a body like The Hive to be headed by someone more gung-ho about the way Autodale does things, like "Angry Hive", but instead we get one that says things like "Well, he _was_ just following orders." and "We remove _too much_ of his humanity, he might as well be another Handyman" and "It was mere empathy for the pleas of the mother. Her _dying_ wish, at that Nothing we can do". Less O'Brien, more Mustapha Mond. Of course, Neutral Hive could well have been placed as she was for purely cinematographic purposes, but it's fun to theorize...
The way I rationalize the freak’s aggression He knew friendly shadow was also part handymen/robot, and he remained docile untill he thought his child was in danger, so he went against shadow to protect his child (It count be a girl)
Considering freaks are equated to and even implied to be non brain washed humans some of them cold actually develope a rational and irrational hatred against machines and Autodale citizens, specially older freaks, just like how people now develope prejudice against others and other things. I would like to see different kinds of freaks and the same freak react differently just like they were described doing in don't feed the freaks.
can we just appreciate the fact that this person singlehandedly wrote the plot, created the characters, had a whole ass concept and designed THE WHOLE FILM all alone???
I cannot stress how hearing David being so immensely happy towards the end of the video put a big smile on my face. It's mindboggling to think that Autodale is almost entirely the work of one man, and I feel honoured that I got to witness Autodale grow with each film.
David, showing sketchy little drawing of the Friendly Shadow: "Y'ALL RIPPED OUT MA ARM" David, showing sketchy little drawing of the Freak mother: "BUT Y'ALL 'SPLODED MA HEAD" David, tapping the drawing: "Important piece of concept art, that." XD XD XD XD
Every young person with artistic interest makes random little pieces of art, but rarely do these turn into a whole universe with full lore. It's entertaining to watch the evolution of this process.
"It's a little funky" "It's not perfect" "I don't even know if it's that good" SHUSH IT'S GREAT KEEP AT IT BUT DON'T YOU FOR A SEC THINK IT'S BAD IT'S AWESOME
Everyone: O v e n M i t t- Me: Can we appreciate how cool and organized his concept and planning look in his sketchbooks? Cuz man that effort and at the same time its so pleasing to the eye-
That moment when I realise this is one guy. My brain crashed as it could not comprehend. Truly amazing, his I for detail is equal to Pixar, keep up the fantastic work and carry on creating this mashup of Dieselpunk, Lovecraft, Clockwork Orange style of genius.
When I heard that you did this all BY YOURSELF I lost my marbles because this entire series on autodale is insane. It's so well executed and well written, it's so BEAUTIFUL! I absolutely love how you explore the many sides to this and flesh out your characters. Great work you are doing and you TOTALLY deserve a break from making the wonderful world of Autodale👏👏👏👏👏
@@mamaie6911 But the level of quality of the short movies he makes is incredible. I've seen studios with bigger budgets and teams create something that isn't nearly as good as "Friendly Shadow". It blows my mind
I just want to point out how happy and proud David sounds He sounds so so enthusiastic I went back and listened to the making of redone, and David sounds so monotone, it might just be there for the vibe of the video But in these making ofs, David sounds so happy with his work And that makes me really happy too! These making of videos always give me inspiration and motivation And I'm just glad Davids happy with his work!
26:35 "I don't even know if it's very good". Anything could be better with additional effort and time, but sooner or later you have the pull the trigger or the project will just languish. "Friendly Shadow" is awesome, and the Friendly Shadow is a superbly realized character. I loved every moment of the film. The mood, the characters, the dialogue, the pacing, the music; all of it hits the mark with the force of a runaway locomotive.
I don't understand how you aren't famous, and why idiots on this platform have more views than you. You sir, make beautiful, engrossing films that have kept me excited for years.
The reason I love watching this channel is just the sheer amount of passion that David has for everything he does. It's absolutley insane. This man works sometimes ten hours a day and it doesn't feel like working for him because he LOVES everything he does, and I'm not even mentioning how beautyful his movies are. I'd wish I had so much passion for anything, but unfortunatley I'm lazy and I feel kinda lost in life :/.
I was so mad at “We Happy Few” because it seemed like it was trying to be this, but missed the mark entirely. I was also annoyed with the lore of “Hazbin Hotel” since it wasn’t connected well in the pilot. Your story is perfect to me.
Well hazbin hotel was a piolt with no guarantee of new stuff it's also had to add in so many characters at once, but I do see where you coming from, hopefully we get more backstory and lore in it.
I love the obvious reference to the “Don’t Feed the Freaks” painting in “Friendly Shadow”, other than that, the film is absolutely amazing and is probably going to be one of my favorite Autodale shorts Edit: will we get/have we gotten a mayor reveal?
Outside of the concept books, we have not seen the mayor yet. He does say that the next Autodale film will probably be about him and the founding of Autodale, so stick around.
kindoflame no david specifically says that *wont* be the next film he makes as he still needs to work on the idea and concept a lot. he does say that he is most likely going to do it though because he finds the idea of it extremely interesting and fun to make
Man I cant even imagine what you would be able to bring to life if you had a full staff professional film crew behind you, with a full budget. You're shorts are so great! I've been following you for years, and I sincerely hope that Auto-dale becomes much, much larger than you ever imagine! PS. You should sell auto-dale merchandise, I think I would actually buy a handyman shirt. And also consider turning this into a DVD with all of your shorts and making of videos I would love to own that also!
I love how this video isn’t just a “so I did this, and I thought of that so I did that”, it’s a little bit of a... comedy... as well, the music, too, you put more of it in the perfect parts, and all of that is what’s keeping me watching, good job, you are an amazing animator
wow I'm blown away by how you put everything together by your self, I personally love animating, and making films, so it was really interesting seeing how you took your idea and made it your own, its very inspirational to see someone make this great of quality content all by themselves!
This madman makes entire notebooks for each of his animated shorts while most of us can't even fill half of a notebook of that size. Good job, David. Good job. Edit: 2 thoughts I got: 1. I forgot to mention he DREW a lot of stuff there. Most of us would only write some stuff there. 2. A thought I got after eating dinner: How does Autodale gets food from? I don't think they are cannibals because... come on. They aren't that evil. I also havent seen any farms there.
Hive? I predicted the damn thing a year ago. The connected people at the end of one episode held one answer: the hive is a communion of souls. Not a true hive, in which all individuality ceases, but a sort of council of souls.
@@Monarch_Prime Souls...I saw no ethereal form or something so abstract. They all seem like their organs still function and their *brains* still operate. But the rest seems accurate.
@@crazy13alex i meant the phrase "communion of souls" my bro and thanks👍 Their brains and individual organs are kept alive in order to increase processing power for the hive
@@Monarch_Prime Ah, my bad. I read it as literal. I loved that the Hive is also responsible for overseeing the Shadow, their view and the hypocrisy on his humanity is really cool and entertaining to watch.
@@crazy13alex the hive wants to control humanity by removing what makes us human. At least some dissenting voices exist to keep the more radical views of some "exceptionals" in the hive under control.
Damn... the amount of work, dedication, thought process... everything is spectacular. I personally didn’t think the fight scene was jarring. It felt very appropriate, as the characters started moving faster, and more. God, I’m so sorry I can’t even properly put my love for the Friendly Shadow short film into words. I just love it. 1000\10 without exaggeration. It was so much better than I could have even hoped for. Fantastic job!!
No one: David: THAT o v e n m i t THO But seriously the amount of detail that David puts into these masterpieces is tremendous! Love your work David, this as original as it gets on UA-cam these days.
I really understand why this video is really long. The Friendly Shadow is your biggest and best project yet! The moody lighting in the sewers, to the texture of the synthetic robot arm. Your art style is so unique and fascinating!! Mixing 3D characters to 2D environment is a very clever idea! Keep up the amazing work! And we can’t wait to see more.
I showed these movies to my English teacher when we where studying dystopias and she liked it so much that she had all the other English teachers show the series their students and have them analyze it.
Personally, my thoughts when I saw the Freak in the sewer was: When it was hurt-Quietly in pain and weak. When it first attacked-Motherly instinct to protect their young or protective father, scared to loose their only child. It was what I thought instantly. Dk if that would be seen as what the Freak was doing but it was always on my mind.
I really hope that the "Give him a coat!" will also get explained, I saw community in the comments theorizing about it a lot (me included). It is surprising to hear that friendly shadow actually have literally a human side, I suspected something like it being just part of the whole program where "the coat" shuts that part down (because mother in the film said "you are a lot less scarier without a coat").
I know everyone is cracking jokes about the oven mitt, and it was pretty funny, but as an artist... Big Mood. Like, when something that should have been small and insignificant takes like... Hours of work. And when it's finally done, it looks really good, but you know no one will notice how much work you put in unless you point it out, so you just... Shout it at anyone looking at the art. So yeah, mood Sorry for the ramble, I know I'm analyzing it more than I should, but still. I see the oven mitt David, and I applaud it.
Honestly I find the limited use of external character voices really charming. It almost changes it into reading as if someone is telling us a story, versus watching something in the moment.
A mayor within Autodale is an interesting idea by itself, but expanding upon it, it become a lot more hopeful and mysterious and something that I would love to see within the series itself. Upon having a matriarch and a hive-mind and programs and handymen who brain wash an entire population to believe in this somewhat twisted cycle, makes me think about the entire point of a mayor and what it would have to fulfill in it's job. From the simple sketch we are given, it seems to be the most human figure that has any sort of power in Auto-dale. Another important feature about the creature is that it's a rotting corpse meaning it's some sort of human that's decaying. This leads me to believe that perhaps the humans of Autodale are given an opportunity to live past their excepted life-span and every so often, when needed. Become a mayor. With all that in mind, the question would still remain on it's primary function within this already seemingly running society that seems to be running fine with no mention of a mayor thus-far. Can't wait to see the idea expanded upon later within the series, keep up the good work, David. :>
David seriously you are the best, the oven mitt bit and the whole "but ya sploded my head!" bit are all cute little things that at face value people might not see but are appreciated in stuff like this and the fact you can blend that so well with the more serious "hey I'm planning on explaining the matriarch soon" kinda things is awesome. You're really a professional in all the senses of the word
Autodale is one of my favorite animated series. It's alluring, satisfying, and I know everything I need to know while still being clueless. The mystery is so eye-catching and it allows for theories and speculation. Not the mention the eye candy that is the animation. It's incredible that only one man can make something so beautiful, so much so that I'd choose an experimental animated series over many professionally owned and produced. Good job David, and thank you for blessing us with Autodale.
"[The Freaks] will likely appear in a whole lot more films down the line." YES! The Freaks are easily my favorite part of the Autodale series, that is saying a lot considering I see this series as a modern 1984. This is because 1984 is mainly about how the McCarthyism and military-industrial complex that saturated Western society during the Cold War, while Autodale is mainly about the idealization of productivity and desire for a 'perfect life' that saturate Western society now. The Freaks do not actually contribute to these themes at all. You could have the Autodale series without them. Despite this, they are what I love most and I do not even completely know why. The design, the symbolism, the implementation... everything about them is just so great! Learning that we are going to see more of them is probably the greatest news I've had in months.
Have you read Aldex Huxley "Brave New World". It is a dystopia where everyone is happy and everyone gets intoxicated by a drug called Soma when they feel bad. Humans are clones created in factories that have a artificial wombs using donated egg and sperm. People get jobs based off 5 Castes the ruling Alphas, the 2nd in command Betas, the servant class Gammas, then the Deltas, and the bottom class Epsilon. The classses below Beta are given an alcohol sample before birth to lower their intelligence. And each caste has its own schools where they learn their job in society. Every person has an apartment to live in. And having lots of sex without children is considered being a good citizen but no one is supposed to be emotionally attached to their sex partner outside of having a shallow friendship. Feeling strong emotions about any topic or person is antisocial.
The freaks are big scary but adorable dinos that add mystery and remind us that despite the series being focused on autodale, the world is bigger and wider than just one city.
There is another dystopia this reminds me of "We" by l by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. It is a dystopia where people worship numbers, science, and machines despite not having robots. Imagination and dreaming is considered a mental illness. Eeryone given homes with see through glass walls, food, employement, an assigned romantic partners. It is a surveillance state looked over by the guardians. It is run by an unknown person called the Benefactor. People who go out of line are publically executed. All babies are taken from their mothers and put in state schools.
I believe the Freaks represent the people who desire to live outside of the conventional "perfect life". They're seen as abnormal, unpredictable, "monstrous". Society expects us to go to school, get a degree, get a job, get married, have kids, raise those kids, send them to school, etc. etc. If someone goes against that, they're targets for discrimination or ostracizing. A career in art doesn't carry the "prestige" of a career in economics or investment banking. Similarly, someone who goes to a technical school learns a valuable skillset that contributes to society, but because they might not have a college degree, they are instantly viewed in a more negative light. Honestly, I think we all like the Freaks because they don't fit the cookie cutter life that is pushed on the citizens of Autodale, much as many people don't fit the ideal of Western society, myself included. Those that don't fit the mould are given a choice: cut away what makes you different, or suffer because you don't fit in.
I love this and the "Friendly Shadow" video. I am a big fan of darker stories and this hits that perfectly. Its unique, creepy, and far from happy go lucky. The atmosphere is amazing and the world has you asking so many questions and peeking your curiosity. Your work really stands out from the the majority of other projects and content, especially on UA-cam and I'm glad I stumbled onto one of your videos and your channel. I look forward to seeing your future projects, dude. : )
I think that’s because the uncolored black and white means that they don’t have individuality and death or bleeding out is an escape from this but the freaks don’t need this escape they have individuality
I noticed that too. It’s weird, they have glowing eyes and black blood, similar to the robotic handymen. I’m not sure if that’s a parallel or if the two are connected some how
As a fellow (albeit wayyy more novice) animator and artist, some of the things you said in this video really hit home. The whole bit about knowing it isn't perfect but being super proud of yourself and so excited to see how you improve next is something I think is the "healthly artist mindset" all artists should try to be in.
The Hive and Matriarch's designs make me curious about who is maintaining them. There has to be at least one bonafide scientist in that tower, or Autodale. At the very least to keep those beings from falling apart. Is this person a brainwashed drone or is there more to them like Friendly Shadow? If they're more like FS then does the Matriarch and Hive also Force them into submission? In the short they talked about experimenting on the Freaks, maybe this person has a bit more freedom than FS so they can do these experiments. Honestly, I think it's a testament to how good the series is that it's getting me to think about these questions.
I'd imagine "the mayor" is probably the one responsible for maintaining a lot of things. Probably a few specialized handymen (or something similar) for performing more delicate work like the creation of the Hive and stuff, too.
Yeah, I was just thinking that there’s probably at least some human scientists in that place. All these machines and cyborgs can’t just come out of thin air, and there has to be a human mind who started all of this in the first place.
The Friendly Shadow, to me, is absolutely iconic, I mean, look at the design, he's got the hat, he's got the glowing eyes, he's got the surprisingly chiseled face, and then you've got his shirt, and then to top it all off, you've got the hat! Did I say hat already?
I talk to people a lot about the Internet, and when I say “it’s the greatest collection of artists who demonstrate power and majesty,” this is exactly what I mean.
When I first saw the length of "Friendly Shadow", I thought "He's gonna work himself to death." Seriously amazing work and definitely my new favorite in the Autodale series. Shoutout to the amazing composers and VAs too. But for real, don't forget that break you were talking about. Creative burnout is no joke!
Just wanted to say again -- the question of "is it any good?" -- it's AMAZING. :) Been following Autodale and your stuff for a while and each iteration gets better and better. I would say Friendly Shadow is your BEST work ever -- but I know that the next thing you make will likely be even better and so on. A nytime someone makes something creative, if they're honest and genuine, they are their own worst critics. so yes you can probably find things in it that you aren't happy with. That's just part of the creative process of continually improving. But honestly, this is great. I'm a creative writer myself and I'm impressed as always with the way you balance releasing hints and clues to your mysteries while making your mysteries deeper, the characters (especially here with the longer format allowing more depth) and so on. The fact I didn't consciously notice the water droplets on the camera lens until the Making Of video is in itself impressive; means the stuff happening in scene is the focus and the extras are not noticed but there to make the scene feel complete. Just going to throw out there that something like the length and quality of Friendly Shadow or its soundtrack are things I would happily pay for. It's fabulous! I can't wait for more Making Of (just don't give away all of your secrets and mystery ;) )
It's finally here and it's 34 minutes long. As you can imagine, there was A LOT to cover! This is only part 1 as well. There will be two more parts coming out in the next two weeks.
Hope you all enjoy! :D
... PART 1?!?! cant wait for the next 2!

Imagine being that orginised enough to keep a note books with all the info and motifs and not random writing on different scrap paper.
If I didn't know this wonderful man existed, I would say that's impossible but I mean... I just wish I could have that origination
I would love to purchase those notes as artbook
Exactly. I’m positive that he scrapbooks all those pieces into journals when he thinks he’s done so it makes more sense
I WISH I was this organized, it does seem like some notes are on different pieces of paper but the way they all fit together in the note book are . Almost art in their own sense !!!

I love how he talks about his animation. Like “I animated it and I don’t even know their emotions”
Or when talking about how many characters and how much that’s a whole lot of dudes
That’s how I write stories, sometimes my own characters surprise me
It be like that
My own characters have gained an unknown amount of sentience in my brain, and they are always withholding information from me
The way the hives talk is so eerie.
Maybe the two that are hugging each other were/are a couple.

It’s all coming together

I bloody love seeing him improve and being goofy. I just adore artists being human. These explanations are one of my favorite things
True, I loved every minute of him talking. He is never boring
Thats what makes David different from other animators
He's entertaining
I love how David admits he doesn't know everything about autodale, there are things not even he knows for sure about it's world, it's like he's just as much of an observer of his own creation as we are in a way and I love that.
Alexander Licentia me two
That is something you don’t see so often.
I like those kinds of artists. Most of the time, you are expected to know everything about your art and your story, like everything from beginning to end and every single detail was planned from the start. But I personally don't work that way, and I just let my imagination take me where it wants and answer questions along the way. It's really nice to hear someone like that too.
Its like owning an animal or pet
You don’t know everything about it
TRI-angle and you get to watch it grow
The freaks are like humans, some good, some bad. Most unpredictable, they’re strangers as he stated in don’t feed the freaks.
I love the reference to the “Don’t Feed the Freaks” painting
The film is phenomenal and it's one of my favorite Autodale shorts

This guy needs a Netflix series.
Netflix is where mediocre trash goes to fill a slot. This guy has a passion for his art and talent and dedication to match it, he deserves more.
You may want to try watching the anime series "Ergo Proxy". They are kind of having some common elements, e.g. post-apocalyptic scenery, walled cities, served by robots, ruled by cybernetic council and at the heart of the city there is a supernatural humanoid who keeps it alive.
@@s0nnyburnett stranger things,Klaus, and Last kids on Earth show laughing in the distance
YES That will be great
Also, there's the fact that is subtlely mentioned "making of" videos for this show... He keeps saying the pronouns I & me... which probably means that he's making this all by himself. So if this was a Netflix show he would have to develop a new episode must sooner, than the 10 month period it took him to create "Friendly Shadow"
And since I mentioned the probable fact that he's making this whole series by himself.

I love the way hes building this lore about a burn world with the most plain people and even though hes go a whole world with the "things" and trillions of different concepts hes gone with the creations are questioning the system compared to the humans questioning it
Big questions:
What is the matriarch
What is the mayor
What are the freaks
How did autodale start
What happened to the other towns
What is the wasteland
What do the fathers do at work
What happends to gravity outside autodale?
The freaks are freaks...?
I can't remember the other Hives but if I recall there was one that sounded a bit more quiet and even a bit shy. But I might be wrong. ;v;
I love your animations though, keep up the good work!
Well damn. You got almost all of the Hive Personalities down before he released the explanation video. Are you some sort of novice prophet?
“I’m scared, I’m angry, and quite possibly, dead.”

The way I rationalize the freak’s aggression
He knew friendly shadow was also part handymen/robot, and he remained docile untill he thought his child was in danger, so he went against shadow to protect his child
(It count be a girl)
Considering freaks are equated to and even implied to be non brain washed humans some of them cold actually develope a rational and irrational hatred against machines and Autodale citizens, specially older freaks, just like how people now develope prejudice against others and other things. I would like to see different kinds of freaks and the same freak react differently just like they were described doing in don't feed the freaks.
I mean, the page said mama freak, so I think it’s a girl.
can we just appreciate the fact that this person singlehandedly wrote the plot, created the characters, had a whole ass concept and designed THE WHOLE FILM all alone???
I cannot stress how hearing David being so immensely happy towards the end of the video put a big smile on my face. It's mindboggling to think that Autodale is almost entirely the work of one man, and I feel honoured that I got to witness Autodale grow with each film.

@@crazy13alex i meant the phrase "communion of souls" my bro and thanks👍
Their brains and individual organs are kept alive in order to increase processing power for the hive
No one:
David: THAT o v e n m i t THO
But seriously the amount of detail that David puts into these masterpieces is tremendous! Love your work David, this as original as it gets on UA-cam these days.
The oven mitt makes the short better

I hope the oven mitt is a reoccurring character
Ah, I spot another Annus
@@BirdaeBlue the oven mitt is the mastermind XD
I really understand why this video is really long. The Friendly Shadow is your biggest and best project yet! The moody lighting in the sewers, to the texture of the synthetic robot arm. Your art style is so unique and fascinating!! Mixing 3D characters to 2D environment is a very clever idea! Keep up the amazing work! And we can’t wait to see more.
I showed these movies to my English teacher when we where studying dystopias and she liked it so much that she had all the other English teachers show the series their students and have them analyze it.
Personally, my thoughts when I saw the Freak in the sewer was:
When it was hurt-Quietly in pain and weak.
When it first attacked-Motherly instinct to protect their young or protective father, scared to loose their only child.
It was what I thought instantly. Dk if that would be seen as what the Freak was doing but it was always on my mind.
This whole project is so beautiful and as much as I can’t wait for the ending, the same can be said for how much as I never want it to end.
It will never end.
So yeah, mood
Sorry for the ramble, I know I'm analyzing it more than I should, but still. I see the oven mitt David, and I applaud it.
OVEN MIT
Honestly I find the limited use of external character voices really charming. It almost changes it into reading as if someone is telling us a story, versus watching something in the moment.
I still can't believe that only one man is behind all this, you are a LEGEND
Someone should donate as “all y’all” so we hear him say “all y’all”
Just to hear that “y’all” again
"The film is better because she has an oven mitt." agreed.
I need the Making of | "Oven Mitt"
Just..... please its backstory is the backbone of this video
"[The Freaks] will likely appear in a whole lot more films down the line."
YES!

Question: I noticed that the blood from the people was bright red (of course), but the Freaks blood wasn’t colored. Was that intentional?
I think that’s because the uncolored black and white means that they don’t have individuality and death or bleeding out is an escape from this but the freaks don’t need this escape they have individuality
you better believe it was. probably to show how the freaks really aren't anything like the autodale citizens.
Its looking through the friendly shadows eyes. He values human life but not that of the freak
I noticed that too. It’s weird, they have glowing eyes and black blood, similar to the robotic handymen. I’m not sure if that’s a parallel or if the two are connected some how
Thank you all! I love the ideas and symbolism! (And omg I got a lot of likes pretty fast lol)
Man, even his notes look clean as hell. This man is bursting with talent, all the way through.
I love how happy he is creating this world, you can tell he actually enjoys doing this and I respect that.
All the robots being voiced by him is weirdly hilarious
Trueeee
I kind of assumed that the Hive was going to use Handymen to experiment on the Freaks, but you have a really good point.
No you didn't. Might have mentioned those eyes several times tho. I was distracted by my violent agreeing

I talk to people a lot about the Internet, and when I say “it’s the greatest collection of artists who demonstrate power and majesty,” this is exactly what I mean.
If that Woman didn't have an oven mit, this series would've flopped immediately, without a doubt.
Karma ikr. thank God he added it!
The previous installments' viewcounts would have actually decreased.
Dap not just that, an warrant would be issued for his arrest, bounty hunters from across the world would be coming for him
Lama Duckie, thank good he put that oven mit in.
Just imagine merch saying "don't feed the freak"
Just wanted to say again -- the question of "is it any good?" -- it's AMAZING. :)
Been following Autodale and your stuff for a while and each iteration gets better and better. I would say Friendly Shadow is your BEST work ever -- but I know that the next thing you make will likely be even better and so on. A
nytime someone makes something creative, if they're honest and genuine, they are their own worst critics. so yes you can probably find things in it that you aren't happy with.
