I remember a story in the bible where Jesus was walking along the street. A large crowd gathered, making it difficult to see or touch him. Among these throngs of people was a man who said, "If only I could touch the hem of His clothes, I will be healed. " And he was healed. And Jesus, despite of the many people touching Him, felt that onr single touch. I guess that is what the rope means to many believers. They needed healing but Jesus is too far. But the belief that if they could just touch even just something connected to them, they would be healed.
So that means the medical field is against it? Same as the notion that there's "science vs religion". Science was set up by God, and were merely discovering what has been set. The medical field is also instruments of God for healing, and no one thinks the faithful ones are competing.

This procession is called "Traslación." In Christianity, the "translation of relics" refers to the removal of holy objects from one locality to another. "Translation" is the English word while "traslación" is Spanish. For example, "La traslación de las reliquias de San Vicente de Paúl" means the translation or transfer of the relics of St. Vincent de Paul.
