Good reason why we use volunteers instead of contractors. Not only is it budget friendly, but the people who go to out church know everyone and what they're driving. Any new vehicle is either someone new or someone to keep an eye on. Be safe and blessed. Thank you, Keith
While it is great that you are doing this and being proactive, it is also extremely SAD. As a retired officer, one of many things always stuck with me. Always watch the hands! The hands are what kill you. God bless you all and stay safe. Never out of the fight.

I agree that parking lot security is very important. In my career as a police officer, most of the violence at bars and restaurants occurred in the parking lot. Criminals will store their weapons in their vehicles and will return to their vehicles to retrieve those weapons. So parking lot security is very important.

Chances of a bad guy picking up on your timely routine is slim. Most, if not all violent incidences at a church are not that well thought out…they just do. That said, I’ve always been taught to mix up the time schedule. We’re all creatures of habit, except for the bad person trying to do harm. Trying to figure out crazy is a loosing battle.
That’s why “mega churches” kind of give me pause. Very hard to pick out someone who is “not supposed to be there”. Many a visitor from out of town every week. Osteens church (not Gods church) is a prime example. When the pastor puts his name on the church that’s all I need to know. Sheep following false teachings. Keeping them in my prayers.
Good video prayers for you and yours for supernatural protection peace and joy beyond comprehension I humbly pray in the only way Jesus the Christ from Nazareth
All good points. Consider some type of soft concealeable body armor. Also, the utilization of two man tactics to respond to incidents as staffing allows.
Hey Keith, I love what you do. No matter what people say, keep doing what God has called you to do. This is an awesome ministry which is well needed. In scenario 1, I don't know if Thomas is right or left handed, but I noticed when Thomas knocked on the car it was with his right hand. If that is his dominant hand (rifgt) I would of knocked with my left so my right would be down ready to react or draw if needed. To me less motion equals speed! Thank you and God Bless you and your family!
Excellent and practical content. I have been looking for a definitive set of drills for our church SecTeam, and I think this is it. Thx, Keith! Thx, Rich!
I don't go to church, except when I have to. When my elderly mother's ride isn't availalble, I drive her. The church don't have security but. Old security guard trick I back in, so I can see what's in front of me & see when it's time to pick her up. Since I know parking lots are dangerious places my second pistol is on my lap, while I play on my phone. When I back in. I'm also careful about what's behind me so it's hard for someone to sneak up on me. Also unless a uniform cop is knocking on my window, I'm not going to be receptive. I won't roll down the window. If the person at my window is persistent, I might drive off. If you're an off duty plain cloths cop I don't see you as a cop If you tell me you're a cop, anybody can buy a badge of the internent & where it around their neck, so anybody can be a fake cop! Also I might look like a threat, I'm just an armed dude, playing on his phone waiting to pick up his mother, like a good son! I just want to throw this out there for you shoot first ask questions latter cops!
We patrol our parking lot at random times throughout the service. And of course right before we let out. I encourage our team to patrol in pairs but not side by side. Thank you for your time and for providing this great resource.
I don't deny that some threats involve a miscreant driving into your church parking lot but we should remain vigilant to threats from those on foot or youths on bicycles. This is especially true in urban areas.
We have about 10 safety team members and three deputies we pay for service. Two in the lobby and one patrolling in the patrol car. The patrol deputy checks out the vehicles and makes contact.
Another "innocent" use of our parking lot, we've found is "kid transfers." We're fairly close to an interstate and we find many "shared custody" families use our parking lot, even during a service on Sunday, as a "safe space" to swap kids between households. They don't seem to have any connections to our church members, but they somehow see this as good neutral ground. I find this fascinating and a great opportunity for ministry if we can figure out a way to make contacts. They usually use a part of the parking lot close to the highway, away from other vehicles, while they wait. So far they've not been any problem. Our church property backs up against a small patch of woods, which is downhill from a local casino which has recently been built. We're adjusting our cameras and monitoring to take into account foot traffic from that direction. Thanks for what you're doing!
Back in the 1930's, my dad said that when he and his older brothers were out poaching deer (during the Depression) in northern Wisconsin, that a Game and Fish officer began chasing their car. One of his older brothers fired a Moisin-Nagant rifle (7.62 Russian) through the front grill of the Game officer's car, disabling the engine entirely, enabling them to escape. They saw the officer's car in a local garage in the small town their farm was near, and saw the car--the block was apparently damaged by the bullet...
Additionally, avoid having team members on opposing sides of the suspect vehicle. Can lead to team members inadvertently shooting rounds into each other if the threat escalates to that level.
Outstanding training video Keith. Thank you for passing on your valuable knowledge and experience through these training videos. I’m praying for your health and Gods blessing in your life.
I’m in sunny Arizona and have formal parking lot training in a few weeks but watched this video a while back. Sunday (yesterday) we had a truck with Oregon plates in our lot with one male sitting in the driver’s seat. As we approached from his blind spots he was looking down. Thankfully his passenger window was down most of the way. I very nicely said “Hi”to him and asked him if would like to come inside. He was startled and said, “What? No!” And quickly drove away. Maybe the best outcome we could hope for if he didn’t want to be there😀 Thanks for all you do👍🏼
I like using the blind spot approach. A left or right armed driver has more work to open the door or window to put me in crosshairs. A new visitor being surprised is not a negative thing. I like the way you covered this topic.

Old school cops did it to leave their prints. Mainly, though, it's to check the trunk/hatchback/etc to make sure it is secured. Every once in a while, someone pops out and runs.
