By my experience the grade shifting on gm vehicles activates when the brake pedal is tapped or touched lightly and the vehicle is not decelerating. Did they change it for 2018 or were you doing this and it still wasn't working?
If you set the cruise control, it will automatically grade brake much more aggressively. Set it at 55, when it gets to 60, slow it to 50 and count it as a brake application
Right - because how is it supposed to know that you want to stay at some speed otherwise? You may just want to coast down a hill before going up the next one.
So the full-size heavier Tahoe RST SUV with the 420 hp 6.2 V8 10 speed auto beat the midsize lighter Durango SRT with the 485 hp 6.4 V8 8 speed auto up the Ike. Nice.
Ryan Maiese they're all just SUV's so towing isn't as high of a priority like with trucks. They tested them in a towing scenario, so it is what it is the GM's are better all around vehicles for some users that may tow more frequently. No need to keep making excuses as to why the Durango didn't do as well.
GMC's just looks sleeker... anyone else noticed the LED tail light issues in the 2015+ Yukon model years?? This beast is expensive - but boy, oh boy does it look sweet!
GM's grade-braking works best with the cruise control set. My '16 Sierra 5.3 with 8-speed auto will grade brakes without a trailer when I it exceeds the set speed by 5-6 mph...and that's without tow-haul mode activated. And the '15 Silverado 4.3 w/6-speed auto I drive at work does the same thing without a trailer or tow-haul activated. I noticed in your gauge cluster that you didn't have your cruise control set at the 50mph speed you came out of the tunnel at. Please do a retest and an update on at least 1 of these 2 vehicles.
TheTonytodd they’ve never used cruise control on ANY of there Ike Gauntlet videos. I don’t quite remember EXACTLY why they don’t use cruise control but I know they do in fact have a reason as to why they don’t use cruise control
TheTonytodd yes, I can’t remember which Ike video it was but I do remember in one of their Ike videos they addressed why they don’t use cruise control. A lot of other people used to ask the same thing “why don’t you ever use cruise control?” I believe if my memory serves me right it’s so that they can test the trucks/SUVs full capability’s under different throttle loads and they can get a better feel for how the trucks/SUVs perform. Hope this helped :)
NormileGuy it helps. It's not a logical rule for them though since they actually do use the cruise control on the uphill towing run to test the engine/transmission tuning. To not use cruise control on the downhill does not fully test what is tested going up.
maxracingteam23 have you made that drive? I do it twice weekly. There are spots where they are backing out, there are also spots of WOT. Anytime WOT is called and held your cruise will kick out
I'd be interested in seeing how the Tahoe RST with the Trailering Package (5.3L V8 but lower differential) does compared to the same Tahoe RST with the 6.2L.
Hi guys. Hello from Russia :). Its interesting what are you doing. I've just subscribed on your channel but i'm impressed. I was in Colorado last year and spent some time in mountains (on Accent hehe). That was amazing! And I loved the trucks then :) We have no such vehicles.
I didn't know the mafia operated in Colorado, please do not come to Los Angeles we have too many criminals over here we definitely do not need the Russian mafia.
you guys should do a video comparing a modern gas powered heavy duty truck vs a 20 year old diesel heavy duty of the same make and model like compare a 2018 F250 6.2 versus a 1998 F250 Power Stroke
Jessa Phillips the generation right before 97 had the 7.3 IDI diesels and then the powerstroke in the later years. And the he eighth gens only had the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI for diesels
With a larger wheelbase in a Yukon the sway is going to be less as the four wheels grip a longer or wider ground resulting in a lesser sway compared to Tahoe. However since the Tahoe is shorter wheelbase there will be less twisting along the wheelbase and so it is going to be sturdier with smooth or less vibrating ride and that was what was felt by the driver!
It would be nice if you could fill the fuel tank on all tests before the run up, and measure it when you get back down. Computed MPG numbers can be way off and are not much to go on.
If you guys would set the eq hitch up correctly so the bars are flat on the L brackets so the friction will do its job and reduce sway. Looks like a rookie tried to set that hitch up with the bars on an angle and on just the edge of the L bracket.
since they are basically the same should of tested manual shifting on one and auto on the other going up and down. so if ford was sending you the XL for gold hitch you could of tested the short GM on manual. could you give us a count from the unedited footage of number of shifts on one of the uphills? it really seemed like that v8 didnt have the torque to keep it in one gear at lower revs.
I bet the cabin of the Tahoe is quieter than the GMC for the same reason, I've been told, the insides of wagons are often a little louder than the cabs of the sedans they're based on. The bigger cargo area tends to amplify the road noise coming in through the floor pan...or something like that.
Hello guys! As much as I like Chevys, especially that Chevy, I would undeniably buy the Durango SRT over the Chevy CRT Tahoe! Or even a Durango R/T now that they come with the same hood and grill as the SRT!! The style and interiors are much better in the Durango!
Hi TLF Crew when we go to our tee shirt link on your videos, We get a malware warning just giving you guys a heads up . hopefully you will look into it and fix so there is no warning please let me know, thanks James ps really enjoy your videos
I have a 2016 Silverado the manual says “On vehicles with a gasoline engine, to disable or enable Tow/Haul Grade Braking within the current ignition key cycle, press and hold the Tow/Haul button for five seconds. When the button is released, the requested mode change is made. A DIC message is displayed. “ I will have to look into this more, does it mean grade breaking has to be engaged in addition to tow haul?
Great test as always, you guys really have this down to a science. Can you please consider doing a 4runner versus Highlander or 4Runner versus Honda pilot test. That would really help validate my dislike of the 4runner as a tower :-(
please , would you do towing test for 3/4 ton suv I know it's not available anymore but A lot of people can't afford a new truck and yet they need a people Carrier and a towing Horse please suburban 2500 vs excursion v10
8:08: Andre, the chain loops on the GM heavy duty pickups are terrible. you almost need an oversize chain hook. GM needs to rethink how they've designed the chain loops on those trucks.
These guys routinely compare apples to oranges it really is so frustrating. NOBODY in the market for a Tahoe is going to ALSO be comparing that to a Yukon XL and not a Suburban. I really think sometimes they come across cars that are "close enough" to make some sort of half-baked comparison of which would not be representative of what anyone would review/compare in the real-world. It's better than nothing, but that is a massive gap and missed opportunity for TFL. It happens all the time..
I’ve seen in your other vids how u top up the fuel tank after it is already full but correct me if I’m wrong but can’t you damage the evap system especially now that they are getting smaller in modern cars when you top it off like you do?
r Robz not unless the manufacturer is an idiot. Full tank is a full tank! Tfl is just letting the fuel settle and air get out. Then filling it up again. The tank still has air volume about the tank. A full tank is full up to the filler neck. That doesn't mean the tank is full to the top... They design it that way!
Ford Fan's on suicide watch for sure this time. Lol Ford recently recalled a bunch of 2015 F-150's due to transmission problems. I guess it can suddenly shift itself into first gear while driving it, which can cause you to crash and die. That is why you never buy a Ford kid's. 😆
Toph The 2016 F-250s maybe recalled soon as well! Apparently, the torque converter on the transmission may have a significant design flaw. One of our fleet F-250s had to have a transmission rebuild due to a faulty torque converter at only 50,000 miles!!! Hopefully my company will realize to stick with Chevy since some of our Chevys from 2011 have over 200,000 miles with no issue.
If you want to make fun of a manufacturer for recalling a product, consider this: Anytime a manufacturer announces a recall, they’re actually doing the right thing by owning up to their mistake and fixing it free of charge to the customer. ...Unlike GM, who waited nine years to recall their known faulty ignition switches. Meanwhile, 124 deaths were confirmed due to the defect... so... yeah... Ford is actually doing the right thing. Just saying...
Toph Remember, GM shares that transmission with Ford, so one might expect the same recall from GM shortly. Also, Ram is recalling 1.8 million Ram trucks with shifters on the column, because the are slipping out of park.
Apparently GM has an embargo on 5.3 testing. There has to be seven 6.2 tests over the past three years. Not one 5.3 of any value tested, ever. Makes you think the 5.3 isn't the volume engine... TFL knows where the butter oozes from. I suspect GM is understandably worried about getting it's volume motor spanked by a 2.7 V6.
Drew, why would think this is 'stupid' as you say? This is merely a test with similar vehicles with the same engine and power. Maybe it WOULD be a good idea to compare the two engines that you mentioned I'll agree with that, but these guys are NOT stupid.
Reg Sparkes yeah, maybe stupid isn't the right word to describe it. But the differences between these two vehicles in the test results can be attributed to the weight and wheel base differences and better brakes on the Tahoe. But I think it tells us as consumers if we got a 5.3L vs 6.2L test is it really worth stepping up to the 6.2L based on your uses for a vehicle.
Right you are Drew, in this case, it's a better test to have done. This is why I think your idea of testing and comparing the 5.3 against and to the 6.2 is a good idea. Cheers!
Tahoe is a shorter wheel base then the Yukon XL, hence longer adds weight which more weight takes more power to move said weight. Thus loss of efficiency as well. Come on guys compare apples to apples not apples to oranges. Love the videos though.
From what I understand the policy is to not use the manual shift/paddle shift mods because you want the truck to shift the way the manufacture set it up. The same manufacture also put in those manual shift/paddle shift modes. More than that it seems like testing should be done in some wild and crazy fashion of..... as if you owned a vehicle. Some how in the real world people buy trucks and...... wait for it.... own them. Why not test them as if you owned them which would include using the manual shift modes so you didn't have to wait for grade braking or wait for a downshift to keep the engine in a better power range? It just seems more logical to test vehicles as if you owned them. When I seen the complaining about the 4x4 switches before I felt the same. If you owned the truck like anything you would adapt to it. I'm a big fan of FLT, but would like to see more testing and comments toward how you would feel about it if you bought it. Not everyone gets a new truck once a week.
hahaha sht is happening no it’s pretty much right. Simply because A. They used the Denali 5.3-liter (which is 355-horsepower & 383lb.-ft. Torque) vs. the Tahoe RST 6.2-liter (with 420-horsepower & 460lb.-ft. Torque). B. Tahoe has a performance package (so the braking is automatically quicker to stop versus the Denali). Other than that, the Tahoe took this one. Now had they used the Denali (6.2 instead of the 5.3) than yeah other than braking it would have won.
Mr. RACECAR they said in the beginning of the video both were 6.2 liter v8s. Chevy is better because they don’t overprice the same vehicle. You get better everything with a Chevy than a gmc.
I have a 2019 Tahoe with less than 15000 miles sitting at the dealership waiting for repair to a common engine problem among 2014-2019 5.3 liter engines. Don’t buy a 2014-2019 Chevy with the 5.3 liter engine.
That is so exceedingly rare it can't be considered in any real-world evaluation, and certainly not something you are alluding to "expect to happen" on all of these. There are literally over a million of these on the road without any air suspension issues whatsoever. Unfortunately, you experienced premature component failure which should have been covered under warranty at least.
Funny how until the 2015, Yukon was the ugly sister of these two. Then GM redesigned Burb/tahoe front and updated Denali, and roles reversed. I will say that 07-14 Suburban trumps them all in looks. That's a good looking truck.
Here The Fast Lane Truck goes AGAIN with the the Tahoe and the Yukon XL. Same engine 6.2L V8, yes. But, the Yukon XL is heavier than the Tahoe and longer.
Thanks for watching. Which of these two is faster? Watch as Andre and Nathan drag race these two GM trucks: ua-cam.com/video/K391sORN-Kk/v-deo.html
I think the suburban will win because it look slightly more aerodynamic
By my experience the grade shifting on gm vehicles activates when the brake pedal is tapped or touched lightly and the vehicle is not decelerating. Did they change it for 2018 or were you doing this and it still wasn't working?
Why dont you use cruise control for these tests?
When will you review the 2018 chevy traverse. And when you do can it be the high country model please.
If you set the cruise control, it will automatically grade brake much more aggressively. Set it at 55, when it gets to 60, slow it to 50 and count it as a brake application
Exactly! Though they came out of the tunnel at 50mph, they didn't set the cruise control.
Right - because how is it supposed to know that you want to stay at some speed otherwise? You may just want to coast down a hill before going up the next one.
GM has their power trains and handling dialed in over the years but the prices are insane.
Demand is insane so they're reacting accordingly unfortunately...
YALLLLLL SHOULD DO MORE GMC I BARELY SEE THEM IN TFL BUT YALLL ARE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
HAPPY NEW YEAR to all the fast lane truck and car crew
Thank you! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to everyone.
I absolutely cannot wait until TFL does this same test with the new Expedition and Navigator.
their the same vehicle
Anthony Webber We thought the same thing for these vehicles too. 😉
the Yukon XL is almost 2 1/2 longer and heavier
Anthony Webber We all know that. You're missing the point.
So the full-size heavier Tahoe RST SUV with the 420 hp 6.2 V8 10 speed auto beat the midsize lighter Durango SRT with the 485 hp 6.4 V8 8 speed auto up the Ike. Nice.
rlhmarines the 10speed gearing helps a lot and it's probably got more useable power down lower in the RPM range so that a a plus for towing as well.
The SRT isn't designed for towing. It can, but it's design for it.
Also the Durango has a lighter suspension.
Ryan Maiese they're all just SUV's so towing isn't as high of a priority like with trucks. They tested them in a towing scenario, so it is what it is the GM's are better all around vehicles for some users that may tow more frequently. No need to keep making excuses as to why the Durango didn't do as well.
2.7 ecoboost 6 speed towed 7700 in 7:38 so anything faster than 8 minutes is pretty irrelevant due to driver speeding.
Both 5.3 and 6.2 V-8's are very durable, robust motors.
@Oakie I’m about to get a 15’ 5.3.
Can you elaborate on your troubles with the 5.3?
Tahoe = 26 gal tank. Yukon Denali XL = 31 gal tank. When towing, that extra 5 gallons matters.
GMC's just looks sleeker... anyone else noticed the LED tail light issues in the 2015+ Yukon model years?? This beast is expensive - but boy, oh boy does it look sweet!
GM's grade-braking works best with the cruise control set. Gmc all day & these guys still using and xl denali like HELLO buncha old geezers
I think for 2018 all Ike gauntlet tests should be done with cruise control on for the up hill and down hill.
maxracingteam23 cruise won’t hold on that grade while towing.
Robb M bullshit. Every truck they take up there besides the eco diesel they have a hard time keeping it at 60 cuz they want to go faster
maxracingteam23 have you made that drive? I do it twice weekly.
There are spots where they are backing out, there are also spots of WOT. Anytime WOT is called and held your cruise will kick out
maxracingteam23 in a perfect world with no traffic at all times ? SURE, otherwise, you gotta compensate for the variables.
Love the Steeler hat Nathan! Bring back the jersey you wore in old videos
Does anybody else’s eyes glaze over when Mr. truck talks about the trailer?
I agree with ya Andre @ 12:56 . Great video TFL Crew
I'd be interested in seeing how the Tahoe RST with the Trailering Package (5.3L V8 but lower differential) does compared to the same Tahoe RST with the 6.2L.

I like how the oil pressure was dropping to 40psi when at 5800rpms while towing. Oil pressure should have been 60psi+ at WOT in that condition.
Barr Thom . It's wore out already
you guys should do a video comparing a modern gas powered heavy duty truck vs a 20 year old diesel heavy duty of the same make and model like compare a 2018 F250 6.2 versus a 1998 F250 Power Stroke

Surprising looking at the oil pressure these run, pretty low compared to the older ls engines
Although I would love it if Chevy made a supercharger add on, they’ve said the RST package is not designed to compete with the Durango SRT.
If you guys would set the eq hitch up correctly so the bars are flat on the L brackets so the friction will do its job and reduce sway. Looks like a rookie tried to set that hitch up with the bars on an angle and on just the edge of the L bracket.
Almost lifting the rear tires off the ground on the tahoe @9:30. Too much tension?
I would like to see this same test with new vs old diesel 2500 series truck.
You should review the workhorse w-15, I would love a discussion about the future of EVs for towing.
since they are basically the same should of tested manual shifting on one and auto on the other going up and down. so if ford was sending you the XL for gold hitch you could of tested the short GM on manual.
could you give us a count from the unedited footage of number of shifts on one of the uphills? it really seemed like that v8 didnt have the torque to keep it in one gear at lower revs.
I know everyone cares so much about my opinion so here it is.
GM is just okay.
I bet the cabin of the Tahoe is quieter than the GMC for the same reason, I've been told, the insides of wagons are often a little louder than the cabs of the sedans they're based on. The bigger cargo area tends to amplify the road noise coming in through the floor pan...or something like that.

Would love to see a tow test between the excursion V10, suburban 8.1, and 6.0 suburban!
6.0 vortex is the best
What do they mean when they say brake assist/applications?
Tahoe vs. Yukon XL. Difference in wheelbase will give you a better overall ride and stability while towing wouldn't it?
I wish I could have Tahoe
Following you guys from Iraq
God bless America 🦾
Hi TLF Crew when we go to our tee shirt link on your videos, We get a malware warning just giving you guys a heads up . hopefully you will look into it and fix so there is no warning please let me know, thanks James ps really enjoy your videos
You guys should try to test out a duraburb
Can you guys make video explaining why big 3 not compliant with J2807 towing standards?
As of the date you posted, they were compliant. Tahoe and Yukon adopted that standard in 2015.
That would really help validate my dislike of the 4runner as a tower :-(
Anything Toyota is bad for towing
Tahoe is a beast
You guys should test a newer model, like 2013-15 duramax converted suberban, that would be cool, just check out duraburb.
Semi tire blowout 11:29
Drive with the LED DRL the headlights look weird in the daytime 😂😂
is the rear end ratio any different between these two rigs?
no
When you’re going down put the cruise control on and it will grade brake
Why compare a Yukon XL to Tahoe? Shouldn't it be Yukon XL and Suburban?
please , would you do towing test for 3/4 ton suv
I know it's not available anymore but A lot of people can't afford a new truck and yet they need a people Carrier and a towing Horse
please suburban 2500 vs excursion v10
Why wasn't the Suburban in this show versus the Yukon XL?
Wait they have the same exact cluster?
Beautiful Mountains in Colorado.
Mr truck was talking during the first sound test in the gmc that's why it was higher
Kevin Wiltshire GMC also has a larger cabin for sound to echo and drone in
i talked after Andre released the button
8:08: Andre, the chain loops on the GM heavy duty pickups are terrible. you almost need an oversize chain hook. GM needs to rethink how they've designed the chain loops on those trucks.
Will you be doing a loop test with the RST, SRT, and Denali?
Love mr.truck advertising, nice to see people act crazy that u think are serious, hint hint Nathan.
Great Video!
Do a side by side review of a Armada and tahoe
Bring the Suburban RST please !!!
i drive gmc for 1500 km with the speed of 140kph to 160kph, is it safe for the engine without stop over or no rest at all for about 10hrs
Compare the XL Yukon with the Suburban not the Tahoe...
Well yeah that would be more fair,a yukon xl vs normal tahoe is also good.even yukon vs tahoe works

Hi l liked your video today😊😁
That is a Tahoe vs a suburban (GMC XL), dude gets in the back expecting a Tahoe to have the same length as the Gmc XL (suburban)
Exactly what I said
You NEED to see IWrocker's Parody video of POWER WAGON DONT CARE 🤣😂🤣😂 +The Fast Lane Truck
Just to note YALL THEY THE SAME SO THEY BOTH BETTER
And you should bring the regular GM not XL
I’ve seen in your other vids how u top up the fuel tank after it is already full but correct me if I’m wrong but can’t you damage the evap system especially now that they are getting smaller in modern cars when you top it off like you do?

220* is hot for a transmission. Don't let anyone else fool you. Transmissions HATE HEAT, sucks the life out of it...let it be known. ✌
Lol the long wheel base is carrying more weight
I have 2013 suburban go 4x4 big every weekend
The Yukon

Why did they use a Tahoe and Yukon xl the yukon is bigger in this test

Patrick Tuggles yes and it's lighter
Tahoe is a shorter wheel base then the Yukon XL, hence longer adds weight which more weight takes more power to move said weight. Thus loss of efficiency as well. Come on guys compare apples to apples not apples to oranges. Love the videos though.

jammin4jonathan You sound like every other commenter.
GMC Denalli The Best number one. .. The Best Word GMC Denalli. ..Saudações do Brasil

@Snake Plissken-They tell?
They are the same damn SUV. Chevy and GMC been doing this for years. GM really needs to separate the differences of these two.
The Tahoe towed a faster time than the Durango to so that's the conclusion the SRT can't out tow a Tahoe but now its time for a drag race
Still miss the 2500 Sub.....
How the fk did the the Tahoe win by a 1/2 point. GMC is better than the Tahoe by every thing but u know tfl electronic devices are down. who's with me
hahaha sht is happening no it’s pretty much right.
This is dumb they're the same truck.
the Yukon XL is 2 1/2 feet longer
next up...tug o war between these two
Same but different
Where is Cadillac Escalade 2018
GMC best
“That’s louder than I thought it’d be”
Yep. The Yukon is a scam. Vastly overpriced for the features and non-competitive with real luxury competition.
steelers hat ,i love it
Ok TFL your ads are getting out of control. Please stop showing multiple ads in a video, it's a huge turn off.
I pay $9 a month for the UA-cam Music app... and with that i get ad free music and UA-cam vids
Thanks for the feedback. You can also help support us so here: www.patreon.com/tflcar so can afford to make commercial free truck videos.

Its 2018 and you don't have an ad blocker yet?
Yes I have youtube red no adds $9 its nice.
Don't seem like apples to apples. Tahoe vs Yukon xl . different wheel base.
Why does GMC even exist? Literally same cars as Chevrolet (except for the Acadia)
Rogers Julianson GMC is a fancier, much more expensive version of Chevrolet. For that reason, I would never choose a GMC over a Chevrolet.
The Acadia is the traverse. They are all the same.
Rogers Julianson GMC needs to go. I agree.
GMC? "Fancier"? Huh?
GMC is NOT a luxury brand at all... Denali trims might be nice, but.... no.
With all vehicles between GMC and Chevy, if you put the exact same options on them they come to the exact price point.
Just wait tell those rear airbag shocks blow out at about 60k miles, and then the compressor fails around 90k. Ask me how I know.
Coffee episode normally written column across spend anybody brand rage minute.
But, the Yukon XL is heavier than the Tahoe and longer.

oh nooo...
