Medical Handover has been described by the NPSA as one of the most 'hazardous procedures in medicine'.Protected Medical Handover's : the most fundamental aspect of a safe , effective handover set up.Many Hospitals have significantly invested in a system to improve Handover culture in their units: such as Dedicated Rooms, Senior presence, use of Handover aides, MDT involvement etc.Nonetheless, a lot of hospitals all over the UK and Ireland do not effectively protect their handovers from non-urgent Bleeps/Interruptions.Effective communication ( free from distraction and non-urgent interruptions) is the single, most fundamental aspect of an safe Handover set up.Without this, the impact and effect of the Handover process is impaired.The importance of Human Factors in the safe delivery of patient centred, safety-conscious healthcare.1) Educate2) Simplify & Standardize Procedures3) Employ Forcing Functions & Constraints4) Promote effective team functioningProtected Times for Handover ( e.g. 3 x 30 minute sessions in 24 hours ) helps patients, carer's and all staff members :1) Benefits Patients: Safety Prioritized.2) Benefits Doctors: Educationally better value, aids professional protection and improves job satisfaction with clearer on call plans.
