I recently had a wedding at an all new location, which is pretty rare for me these days. I'm very familiar with most of the venues here in Michigan, so doing a destination wedding down at the Ritz Carlton Resort in Naples, FL was the perfect opportunity for me to talk about what I look for when scouting a new location.
I think scouting is a very beneficial skill for preparation as a photographer, and even a short scout can really improve your quality of work when it comes time to perform. So in this video, I talk about the things I look for, everything from how I pick locations, and how I use those locations to move through the day as efficiently as possible.
I'm sure there will be a lot of questions about gear used in the images. I brought down a smaller kit of all primes. Sony 24 1.4 GM, 35 1.4 Zeiss, 50 1.4 Zeiss, Sony 85 1.4 GM, and Sony 135 GM. For lighting I primarily used a 24x24" pop up softbox with 2x AD200 on an AD-B2. The only other modifier I used was a 65" reflective umbrella for the family portraits. I'll share specific lighting details on images on my instagram, linked above.

I couldn't agree with you more. This, for me, is one of the most important things a photographer can do before a shoot. I always scout and get a few practice shots before shoot day. I appreciate the tidbit on keeping an eye out for perfect shaded spots that may have distractions in the background. Very helpful.

Hi Rob. Have you tried “Sun Seeker” app? You can use any location and any time of year to see where the sun will be overlaid on a satellite map image of the location. Super helpful to get the suns position on locations you can’t scout right away and where the sun will be at any time of year. The 3D View lets you use your devices camera to see the suns position, pretty cool. BTW, I am not affiliated with the developer, only a happy customer for several years.

Not sure about that app specifically but mine has the same functionality and it's super helpful!

Hi Rob, how many weddings do you do a year? Back when I was shooting weddings, I would shoot about 80 per year and it was absolutely impossible to scout any of the locations ahead of time, so you just had to do the best you could with what you got. The hardest events were on boats, where the inside of the boat was too crammed to set up in and the wind was blowing in the upper decks, so everyone's hair was flying around.
The idea of scouting the location ahead of time is really great, but that only works if you have just a few weddings to shoot per year. If you have 3 or 4 over the weekend, there's just no way you could do that.

I've shot everywhere from 20 to 75 a year, depending on my brand's position in the local market and how much I relied on shooting as an IC.
I understand what you're saying, but I didnt claim that this should be done for every wedding. If you're shooting 80 a year it's obvious you are familiar with your local markets venues and would develop a game plan on how to efficiently work at them, whether planned out or on the fly. This video was made for people who choose to scout something completely foreign to them, their discretion on when scouting is appropriate (even if never) is their own.

Great video! Scouting is second thing on my list. Settling the butterflies in my stomach always comes first. Which app do you use for sunrise, sunset? I use plan-it pro, but it's not user friendly if you don't use it a lot.

I saw your question and being a drone pilot, I use an app called Drone Buddy, even when doing portrait photography with my regular camera gear I find it helpful as it gives me the times for sunrise and sunset, the only issue is that the weather forecast it gives is inaccurate (as are most weather apps). For weather I depend on the Weather Network app or being Canadian I just check Environment Canada's website.
