      Team Whyachi makes ALOT of stuff for robot combat, gearboxes, switches, alot of cutting and milling work. Heck they make a cow milker, and food processing equipment. Didn't know about that last one until I connected some dots because another company that uses their stuff wanted some testing done at my work.
      (edit) Didn't realize he literally pulled up their site haha. But apparently Whyachi also made stuff like Tombstones frame. Really cannot believe how much work they do.

      @@jacobe1942 I have to somewhat agree, but then you look at some of the things the older bot builders did back in the CC days or early RW, and its just being done again. There really is no money though, from the outside looking in, but still has been some bots that do not have a massive backing with sponsors that have done some interesting things.

    If you error in speed from gear box you should always always always have a slightly faster wheel speed in the front. This avoids pushing while turning and gives a pulling effect, also used in all 4 wheel drive vehicles

    Just my opinion...
    I would ditch the front motor drive. I dont see it being more effective for rhe weight it will add. I would keep the tires and magnet but just make rhe front wheels free spin.
    I also would make scorpious disk travel across the top of rhe bot in a half moon arch. Kinda like a better version of Tantrum's punter. I think a longer throw and a small arch would be more effective. I would move the bottom pivot point as far down and centered into the bot as I could. Then i would run a short arm where the disk never fully leaves the space of the bot. That way the disk can slot thru the wedge and be tucked in tight when retracted. That would move the weight more forward and lower.

    • @joshuakong7175
      @joshuakong7175 10 місяців тому +5

      Driven front wheels are critical because when the weight of an opponent rests on the wedge/forks the load on the front wheels increases and the weight on the back wheels decreases. You can think of this as a first-class lever with the front wheels as the fulcrum. Not driving the front wheels can easily halve the pushing power of a robot because the wheels that are taking the most weight are not putting any force into the ground, and the powered wheels suddenly have a lot less traction to work with. Sh00k powers the front wheels directly in anticipation of them being more valuable in a pushing match.

    • @MullinPerformance
      @MullinPerformance 10 місяців тому +1

      @@joshuakong7175 I agree another set of powered wheels would help but Scorps has been 2wd it's whole life and never had a problem. If they can solve the rear heavy issue it would be even better. To me, moving the saw pivot lower into the bot would solve a lot of that issue. Just my opinion

    Have you considered taking the hard wheels and popping them on a lathe to shave them down slightly to the desired diameter? Or possibly ditching the front wheels altogether and use Teflon plates to just slide over the floor? They’d erode fairly quickly, I’m sure, but with the right mounting scheme they’d be fast to change out *and* you could fine-tune the height between matches.

      That's what the magnets are for. What made previous Scorpios lift the front was the power to the motors, just like in a bike, which ends up lifting the front when you first give it gas. But with the magnets he should not only stop the wheelies but also have better traction, like Claw Viper was able to achieve last season (of course he won't be as fast as Claw Viper because Kevin's bot uses four really powerful motors for the propulsion).

    Hey Zach, see if you can drive the front wheels using a toothed belt & pulley from the rear wheels. You just need to reverse the wheel size difference with your pulley diameter difference. This should save you 2 motors and gear boxes, and you can go with 4" wheels up front. 24 tooth pulley on the rear axle, and 48 tooth pulley for the front axle

      Really risky to rely on the exposed wheels to drive the front ones.

    • @heartofdawnlight
      @heartofdawnlight 10 місяців тому +1

      @@FaeTheo its just a 2 wheel drive. which they (and a handful of other bots), already rely on currently ( & which tends to hold up well).
      if the bonus they were looking for was primarilly the ability to run magnets, not only would this save them thousands of dollars on each frame ((cost of motors + gearboxes)) it would also save them a decent amount of weight & empty space in the bot for better padding & a lower density of Killable components. Hell they could also add a second set of small wheels up front in the middle in case the outside ones got pinched by armor or whacked (more even weight distrobution)... could even use smaller wheels if they desired, as the the wheel size doesn't need to match a gearbox ratio.
      They technically wouldnt even need to use chains or belts if they full sent into the 2 wheel drive, but 4+ wheel idea... as they can just be free spinning on bearings, giving full control to the rear wheels.

    • @qapla
      @qapla 10 місяців тому

      Having it be 4-wheel drive, with the front wheels under the bot like that, would allow better movement and pushing ability should the real wheels get damaged or knocked off. Yes, the tradeoff is the added weight of the drive motors, but if the battle comes to a pushing match, having 4-wheel drive would be an advantage and may just be enough to get a victory when both bots lose their primary weapons.

    • @heartofdawnlight
      @heartofdawnlight 10 місяців тому

      @@qapla if wheels are getting knocked off then the magnets are holding it to the floor, thus why wheels are in the front in the first place though...
      + we know a bunch of the pushing power is going to come from the back just due to the significatly higher traction that zach mentions in the video. the front wheels are also tiny, so getting the torque necesary to push primarilly off of them would be wild right?
      Not trying to say theres 0 benifit... but like, questioning it makes sense imo

      @@heartofdawnlight If those magnets are electro-magnets, they could be switched off in the event of losing the back wheels - or, if permanent, they could be installed so a simple solenoid cold raise and lower the magnets so they could be engaged or disengaged. Sure, that could be a weight tradeoff ... but that is what combat robots are all about.

    I believe Jackpot, MadCatter, and Whiplash all have welded steel frame construction like Skorpios has had, and its worked pretty well for them. Matt Vasques told me he liked that if parts of Whiplash's frame gets messed up they can pretty much just plasma cut it off, and patch weld fresh steel in place. There are plenty of advantages for machined aluminum frames too as we well know for Bloodsport but it can also be expensive

    I can't describe the amount of relief I felt when you plonked that wedge back at 17:04, it's Skorpios again! Making it out of a composite of materials instead of just steel is going to be very interesting.
    If you somehow are able to spare the weight, I think the mini-mags for the front wheels will be worth it (instead of having a belt or chain going from the back motors to drive them), if the front wedge somehow gets pinched you only lose that wheel, not a possibility of the entire side locking up if the front wheel does. A lot of the weight of the bot will be on the front wheels as well (especially when wedging another bot around) so they will be doing most of the work while the rear wheels will be especially effective when the bot is pushing or doing a bit of a wheely.
    I'd look into getting some kind of frame rail on the back or bottom of the bot though, boxes are strong and right now the bot is 4 framerails side by side being held together by the wedge, top/bottom plate, since the panels on the back are not continuous so they won't really lock everything together? I just don't want to see this version being split apart and used on highlight reels for the rest of a season.

    If I were to make a change to Skorpios it would be to finally transition to brushless drive. Now is the opportunity because you are redesigning from the ground up. Plenty of teams now use brushless drive so their is plenty of resources you can use to get it to work the way you want.

    Also thanks for sending down the Skorpios vs. Big Dill tire to Robot Ruckus. I won it, and it is on display in my room. It’s a great piece to own.

    Hi Zach, as another fellow fan suggests here to ditch motors on the front wheel, just let them roll freely so you gain weight, and with this free weight you could put another aluminum plate perpendicular to the other so you don't have to rely only on you bottom plate to prevent your robot "folding" on the wheel axis orientation. Would recommend joining the plates as the carpentry half lap joint from the bottom, so it easy to do maintenance. Don't know if I passed the message ( something like this -> 00I-|-|-I00 lol, as a singular transverse plate )

Maybe something at the back or redistributing the weight to prevent it from lifting upwards. Or even shifting the wheel positions forwards or backwards. But those are just my thoughts on the matter.

    Main change I've felt Skorpios needs the last few seasons is the speed of the hammer saw. Compared to SawBlaze the arm moves quite slowly, negating the bite benefit you get from using such a system. Otherwise it seems like you're addressing many of the issues I'd already noticed with the bot. (mostly that you wheelie when you don't want to and the wheels are too vulnerable).
    I'd also be tempted to play with a UHMW chassis like Ripperoni has to save weight over both steel and aluminum. So far they haven't been burned for it and it saved them enough weight for their flywheel without them having to sacrifice much elsewhere.

    Skorpios does best when it controls its wheelies. Once the front plow is in the air, bad things happen :(

    If I were to change something about Scorpios I would redesign the idler pulley. The weapon motor would spin a dense rubber wheel in the middle of the robot. When the weapon arm retracted it would have a wheel that would interface with the weapon motor wheel which is how it would spin up. Then when the weapon arm fired, momentum would keep it spinning until it hit it's target. It would then retract, contact the spinner, and spin up again. No more vulnerable idler pulley or belts to get destroyed.

    but what about the already bult Skorpios #1, Skorpios #2,Skorpios #3,Skorpios #4,Skorpios #5,Skorpios #6, and Skorpios #7! and Skorpios #X (!?!?!?!) tbh bringing droopy on to the team would be goated, Tommy is a top tier bot battler. no matter what this new design will be an improvement. it solves issues without complicating what works and frankly if you get hit what youre making aluminum, you probably are on the back foot anyway. its good to save weight. this will work *manifesting*

    This may not help with your build, but I'd add a scorpion tail to your robot. ;) Or make your weapon appear like one. ;D Still be a saw, but it may move like a scorpion tail or have armor shaped like one.
    Also, that site looks awesome and while I've never built a robot before, I can almost see myself just messing around and seeing what all happens, LOL. Probably not its purpose though...
    And loved how Zach was saying "boop" for every addition, LOL. The man must really enjoy his work! ;D

    If I had to redesign Skorpios, I'd be sorely tempted to replace the hammer saw with a sort of hammer drill. And not with a proper drill bit, but a gnarly knob of destruction. It's probably a bad idea. But so is making a 250 lb death machine, so 🤷🏽‍♂️.

    You really lost a lot of coolness points repeating that lie about Riptide.
    First of all Riptide is a scaled up version of Ethan's own successfull beetleweight. And you, as an experienced builder, should be able to spot the fundamental differences in design. Not to mention that if the beetle is a copy of Lynx, then you just accused tens of other builder of shameless copying as that weight class is choke full of similar beaters. I don't know how well they'll take your implication about their bots.
    On top of all that, it could as well be claimed Lynx is a copy of Biteforce or tons of other bots.
    Like Hobgoblin, an ancient heavyweight bot that looks exactly like Lynx and Riptide.... weird that you, as an old builder, completely ignore its existence and decided to go with the lie that was first originated by the show to create drama and parroting it without thinking about the consequences.
    Very classless and uncalled for.

    Question...If you run a larger wheel and a smaller wheel chained together to one large mag motor and gearbox....Is the surface speed split between the larger and smaller wheel?...or Does the larger wheel assume the surface speed and just pushes the smaller wheel along?
    Thanks Diane and Zach for great builder blog videos!!! 🦂🦂

    This new version of Scorpios looks scarier than the previous versions. The weapon alone looks like it'll hit way harder. Just the weapon shape looks like it'll have a higher moment of inertia. Combined with double belting for more power and a weapon mass increased to 20 pounds. If you guys can get that thing to spin up to the 250 mph tip speed limit...yikes! I can't wait to see that beast in action!

    I'd lay into more a pokemon vibe look . paint all the body that TM blue/teal with black accents and paint the blades/discs poison type purple . I'd also name each of them base off poison type moves like sludge bomb, accid spray and toxic fang. And add big eye lights to the wedge that go from red to purple when it's blade is full speed. I love everything you talked about changing in the video so most of the things I do to it are purely extra pieces of FLAIR.

    If I can change one thing about Skorpios, it'd be more competitive. I know it's a bit harsh, but hear me out. You guys are super nice, likable, friendly and everything. But I thought the sward attachment, and asking people to vote on it, and the Dragon King, do not make you look like you are being competitive or serious enough. I love both of your chilled attitude and friendliness and all that, but I'd like to see you guys win.

    The changes to the new Skorpios is to have Brazilian wheels like Black Dragon and Whiplash. Those wheels are more durable than your average go-cart wheels. But keep the Hammer Saw gimmick and the sky blue paint job.

    If your front wheels are going to be just for the magnets, why even make them powered? keep them far enough back from the wedge that a bad hit that bends the wedge wont hit them, and they should be very usable, could even make them from UHMW.
    I don't think you should offer the drivers spot to someone unless they have driven full size bots in full size competition, bettle and ant weights give you experience, but it wont translate well for a first outing with a new bot, might instead say, you can take it to the destructaton or you can be on the team, but the driver is the most critical part of the bot, i dont know if this person has driven the 125lb bots, if so, my opinion would change, but 1 and 3 lb bots even 30lb bots, are very different to the heavier ones.

    Really happy your going with the heavier hammer saw, and make sure the front has enough weight so that your robot doesn't fall backwards like it did in the earlier seasons

    What purpose does the weapon arm and mechanism serve? Does it add to the weapon's impact power? Common sense says it doesn't add meaningfully to the impact potential. You're going to lighten the arm by making it plastic and flexible? That will further lessen the impact potential. Imo completely lose the moving weapon arm and lengthen the wheelbase to stabilize the driving control.
