Actually, there is no reliable historical records to prove that Shishido Baiken even existed. He might as well be a fully fictional character from Eiji Yoshikawa's book.
@Santiago Ayala: I think that in this fight Musashi crossed his swords to encourage his enemy to try to trap them with his chain so that Musashi could disable one of his opponent's weapons and then close in to finish the fight at close quarters by any means necessary. You can tell that this was a duel because on a battlefield he would have reduced the effectiveness of the chain by staying in the restricting shelter of the tall standing bamboo or of any other standing hedges or tree trunks.
Jeez, the way Baiken fought was incredible! Especially at 1:37 when Baiken was able to effortlessly parry Musashi's heavy attacks at close range. He was at the disadvantage yet still had Musashi on the back foot. It really conveys what a formidable opponent Baiken was.
In 1607, at the age of 24, Musashi had come face-to-face with the most infamous swordsman named Shishido Baiken, He’s not just practiced sword skills, but also the master of using sickle and chain called Kusurigama.

The "kusarigama" is said to have been developed during the Muromachi period. The art of handling the kusarigama is called kusarigamajutsu.
Each of his duels contributed to wonderful instruction in his book. Tactics are tactics, but the outcome was to make a cut to your enemy. And cut him good lol. I'd say both work alright. When the chain is linked into the top of the kama, you have a better lever and effect on the chain. At the bottom, you can use both kusari and kama separately much easier. It's like having a weapon in both hand. The main principle of the kusarigama is that the weight at the end of the chain is for attacking from distance and the kama to party and attack when the enemy manages to get closer. You know, fighting against a Kusarigama if you had a shield and sword would be easier. But I understand that different cultures rule and this and that. I think the Shield would give you an advantage of defense because with just a Katana, you are open to most of the attacks and would need to rely on your agility to evade the attacks. Let's be glad the samurai didn't have to face off against it's European medieval counter-part knights.
Amar Munkhjargal it would be challenging to do so since you'd need to get behind my shield. You're just trying to make an opening and strike. In reality, this weapon relies on range to do so. Sword and shield would mean good defense with good offense capabilities. You only have distance as a protection. Shorten my distance, then pummeling you senseless and stabbing you at the same time? So, there's not much you could do when my shield gives me an edge to combat at close range and defense from your chain. Aside from that, if I had a spear, you'd be even more screwed because I got my range with my spear and my close combat with my sword.
No need to get behind you. I can just hit you from above. Whether you block it or not the chains will hit the shield but the weight will twist and hit you in the back. Unless you bring big-ass roman shield or sth. Also, I got only chain and sickles and you got a bigass shield so there's no way you gonna get close to me.
Let me remind you, under all that heavy equipement. You are a sitting duck. Just take a look at how the mongol rip through the western world. Knight heavy armor tactic got outclass by hit and run tactic. It not practical to wear full body armor while traveling like a vagabond. In your case, you keep saying shield and sword is best combo. Do you understand a real duel taking terrain into the calculation. The medieval knight shield are quite heavy, hard to wield in narrow terrain such as forest, indoor. holding a shield can be considered a disadvantage. If you are using the scenario above as an example.
Am i the only who once i had the chain wrapped around the katana would have driven it into the ground to render that chain useless and then rush him with the wakizashi?
not really 1. Enemy could run to Musashi and would have enough loose chain to catch his feet or something. a usually tactic with this weapon. or 2. Enemy still got a Kama and the second sword. Both for close range fighting. or 3. every fight is differant. you can win 1.000 fights against the same enemy. 1001 you still can lose. have a ncie day :)
In the Vagabond manga by Takehiko Inoue, Baiken survives due to asking Musashi to go back to the village and get some healing supplies. In this series, Baiken dies. What happened in real life?
I watched this entire series over a few weeks, and not only was it amazing, but I actually learned how to understand a lot of the Japanese language. I can't speak it except for a few phrases from Martial Arts, but I was really starting to get the syntax and a bunch of vocabulary. By the end I was barely reading the subtitles.
If I remember correctly, Musashi had actually used his wakizashi to kill Shishido. It was an unorthodox move, as the wakizashi was mostly used as a parrying sidearm at the time. This gave rise to Muashi's distinct twin-bladed style of swordsmanship which he became famous for. Of course I could be wrong, it's been about 15 years since I read the book.
1:07 - all he had to do, was to come in and stab the chain guy. Another gimmick at 1:40 - instead of withdrawing sword and stabbing, all he had to do, was to slide it down towards the legs.
Musashi as usual took the high ground & into the bamboo to deter chain & sickle but Baiken did well until the end when he ran out of luck & maybe stamina.

@@hadenanderson9968 You're welcome! If you can't find it still, let me know and I'll help
No disrespect to the movie and actors but I feel like this movie(mushashi) deserves a re-made with better graphics better picture and action..
Yeah, either I...
Vagabond chains and sickle.
If I'm wrong someone correct me but isn't this the duel where Musashi also did a first by throwing his companion sword and killing his opponent?
Musashi never threw his sword He drew it unsheafed so the chain entangled the sheaf . He the usheafed it and cut his opponent down.
I used to have the Samurai trilogy starring Toshiro Mifune as the titular Musashi. When did this version come out? It looks really good.
It was a series from 2003.
All episodes are on You Tube.

You know, fighting against a Kusarigama if you had a shield and sword would be easier. But I understand that different cultures rule and this and that. I think the Shield would give you an advantage of defense because with just a Katana, you are open to most of the attacks and would need to rely on your agility to evade the attacks. Let's be glad the samurai didn't have to face off against it's European medieval counter-part knights.
brianthao102 if you try to block kusarigama then it'll just twist and hit you in the back.

Shishido Baiken 1580-1607 Samurai and Musashi Miyamoto 1584-June 13 ,1645
Sure gave Musashi a good run!
I recommend you read "The Book of Five Rings" (五輪書), i apologize if I made a misspelling.
Am i the only who once i had the chain wrapped around the katana would have driven it into the ground to render that chain useless and then rush him with the wakizashi?
not really
1. Enemy could run to Musashi and would have enough loose chain to catch his feet or something. a usually tactic with this weapon.
or
2. Enemy still got a Kama and the second sword. Both for close range fighting.
or
3. every fight is differant. you can win 1.000 fights against the same enemy. 1001 you still can lose.
have a ncie day :)
In the Vagabond manga by Takehiko Inoue, Baiken survives due to asking Musashi to go back to the village and get some healing supplies. In this series, Baiken dies. What happened in real life?
Baiken died. musashi did not have a very good history of people surviving duels
Молодец Мусаши!

How to get the whole series
What’s the name???
NO WAY that chain link didn't get cut in half by the katana strike
Necessity is the mother of all invention.
I wouldn't use that swinging weapon because you may hit your own head with it.
What's name of movie pls & thank
いい~🍀ですね☀️😃❗
素晴らしい~
ですね🎵
In Vagabond this fight is so hype
From which version of Musashi films is this excerpt taken?
As far as I remember Musashi, once disarmed, killed him with a shuriken according to the books I’ve read
Foi com isso que ele teve a ideia de usar 2 espadas. O cara aí embaixo já comentou. Mas no duelo com Kojiro foi só o remo
1:07 - all he had to do, was to come in and stab the chain guy.
Another gimmick at 1:40 - instead of withdrawing sword and stabbing, all he had to do, was to slide it down towards the legs.
In the first case, do not forget that along with the chain there is also a sickle.
It's over: Mushashi has the high ground 😂
What movie or show is this from?
2:00
Musashi's epic fishing arc
Nice is Kusarigama!!!!!
Kiryu Kazuma vs. Majima Goro (Ryu ga Gotoku: Kenzan)
Can I have the title of this movie 🎥 I wanna watch it
二刀流開眼!
Ha it's over anakin I have the high ground. Or it's over shishindo I have the high ground.
Is this the guy Retsu was compared to after he was killed by Musashi???
How many cuts we need for this fight boss?...three for every attack
Musashi as usual took the high ground & into the bamboo to deter chain & sickle but Baiken did well until the end when he ran out of luck & maybe stamina.
if the enemy runs away from you, then you shouldn’t chase him. it will turn out stupid
Is that rindo at the back
What year was this series from? I often get the different versions mixed up.
NHK 2003.
is this HANBEI from 13 assassins?
The series that came from is close to the greatest 40 hours in television.
i really love the potrayal of otsu in this series, she was potrayed unlike other mushasi adaptation weak and clingy. in this series desperately pursue takezo because she doesn't wanna see takezo alone taking bloody path toward cruelty and insanity.
i love how they potrayed matahachi too.
What was the name of this series called, its brilliant and so well done 🙏🏼
And thus..... The weed eater was born.
