- This is the documentary that the U.S government doesn't want you to see!
This documentary has been uploaded for EDUCATION purposes and to show the public the harsh realities of what CAPITAL PUNISHMENT really means...and the horror of getting it wrong.
You will have a fly on the wall view of condemned man EDWARD EARL JOHNSON and his lawyer over the space of 14 days. You will be with him in his cell, with his lawyer, with his family and spiritual leader all the way...right up to the moment of his EXECUTION!
Never before and probably, never again will such unlimited access ever be given again.
Brace yourself to go on an extremely emotional journey as a man, considered by everyone, including the PRISONS WARDEN, to be completely innocent is fighting to stop a seemingly, unstoppable execution.
If you would like to end capital punishment in your country (U.S) or any country, visit reprieve.org/ to find out what you can do.
THIS VIDEO HAS BEEN UPLOADED TO TEACH/EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON THE ULTIMATE PUNISHMENT THAT IS CARRIED OUT IN THEIR NAME & WHAT IT REALLY MEANS. THEREFORE IT IS ALLOWED UNDER FAIR USE.
This video has been uploaded following reasons:
1) To demonstrate to the public the harsh reality of what a sentence of "DEATH" really means.
2) To show the full horror of what it means to get it wrong when an innocent man is executed.
3) The lasting damage it often causes to those carrying out the sentence...on all sides.
4) The data shows the death penalty does not work as a deterrent.
5) Too many innocent people are executed.

This happened to a man who lived near me. There was a murder of a barmaid in the bar after closing. Ray was seen just talking to her. It ended up being convicted and sentenced to death and spent 10 years on death row. Turned out a lawyer saw his case and his conviction was overturned due to DNA evidence. They then arrested the right guy and Ray was a free man and was awarded money for the state’s screw up. I hope he lives the rest of his life in peace and happy
Makes me kinda glad I don't hang out in bars.
I read about that case. Wasn't that in Ada, OK?
This could happen anywhere. @@1946luke
That case was all about some BS to do wit his teeth “The Snaggletooth Killer” I’m so pleased the way it ended for Ray but it not like that for everyone
@@1946luke So you guess you are a "better" person and those who go out into a bar having a drink are "bad"?
I saw this documentary when I was 26. I'm 61 now. I can honestly say I couldn't talk for 3 days after. It really did change my life. God bless Edward Earl Thomas and his family and loved ones. I have never forgotten him and never will. From the UK.

I thought that too & ur probably correct , but perhaps they can't completely control what's on UA-cam or social media. Just like in radio they have strict rules but when Satellite came out they didn't have to follow those rules idk. Or it's just a matter of time before it gets taken down
But are you watching it on UA-cam? YES, otherwise you wouldn’t be commenting on it, although, and as far as I know, the USA administration hasn’t banned UA-cam, Not yet anyway, and they haven’t got the power, without UA-cam agreement to block it on the USA internet system.
Why am I watching this? I don't know why I do it to myself. Rip to all the innocent people that were wrongly executed. It makes me sick to my stomach. 😡😡😡
As sad as it is and confusing as it is Miss Anji you do it to yourself as do I to educate yourself and to feel even for a brief moment what it is like to be in that man's shoes, and as heartbreaking as it may be to all involved the viewer included we need to see this terrible stuff to acknowledge that it actually does happen over and over again to many people who are actually innocent. It doesn't matter how you approach it there is no easy nor comfortable way to process the emotions and thoughts that stories like this bring to the surface. Feeling sick to your stomach just like I feel just shows your compassion and proves that you are a good human being.

@Cheryl Joseph Who's the scumbags? The innocent people or you?
hmm I wonder why the person making this documentary never mentioned really any of the states evidence against this man? he knew you would have a different option if he had👍 you just heard a one sided story but there's always two side of a story in situations like these.
Think it can’t happen to you? I was picked up for questioning on a burglary charge. I asked the law enforcement people “what makes you think I did it”? Their reply” the burglar was wearing army socks”; I said “well that leaves me out, I was a Marine and I only had Marine socks”! Law enforcement said I knew what they meant and I said no I don’t! I’ve never committed a burglary in my life. I told em I wanted a lawyer and I wasn’t answering anymore questions. I was eventually released. For a little bit I could’ve been charged with a crime I knew nothing about. Innocent people do get convicted!
Agreed. Better some sick POS go free than for innocent man be put behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit. We should always scrutinize every case for evidence that points toward innocence.
Are you posting from death row? Are you still in jail?
justiça americana..
I was mistaken for somebody else a few times. A guy that the police were apparently looking for and I fit the description. Obviously it was a situation of doppelganger and it wasn't their fault.
You're guilty and should have been sent to prison for 35 years just for having those socks in the first place
Man this made me feel sick to my stomach. I woke up in the middle of the night and this was somehow in my recommendations. I couldn’t stop watching because I felt the need to know this man’s story and I have a feeling I won’t get much sleep tonight. May God Bless his INNOCENT soul.

Amen I admire Edward’s faith!
Respect for the guy in uniform who from the outset wanted to display the upmost respect for his family in the situation. He was able to take a step back and see that any of them could be in their shoes. I don't know if he was doing that for the camera but he seemed to be a genuine, believable guy. I'm almost convinced at the end, he may have had his doubts whether an innocent man was put to death as he was addressing the press conference. He seemed to be struggling. Perhaps he thought it all along but didn't want to go on record as such.
Yes I believe he was very upset after that and didn’t feel he had committed the crime.
Probably thought he was going to get a stay
He did not want to believe it

I disagree with the notion that any one of us could be in this situation. Wrong!!!!! My life, I lived in a way that I passed DoD and FBI background investigations to a achieve a high level security clearance in the US Army. However, I had family members that drank and smoked MJ, and they, never had any legal issues, either. To say that this could be anyone, no.

1:11:35 The strength it takes for a mother to hug the executioner that’s about to put her innocent son to death.... I can’t even imagine. We all talk about how horrible it would be to put an innocent man to death but this documentary ALLOWS US TO ACTUALLY SEE IT HAPPEN. This video shouldn’t be banned, it should be mandatory viewing.
This innocent young man put to death due to the corruption of the slime that threatened him into a false confession. This documentary is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. Those officers who coerced that false confession should have to pay with their lives for the murder of Mr. Johnson.
Yeah true that
Does special places in the afterlife for the police officers that did that to him
My wife was raised in a conservative household. She went to law school and completely changed her POV with respect to the death penalty. One of the things they taught was how it is better to let a murderer go free than to execute an innocent person. They studied many cases where innocent people were executed. Being convicted of any crime and doing time when you are innocent is horrible enough. Forget the death penalty.
So basically what you're saying is some liberal law school brainwashed your wife! We all know it's happening. Thanks for the verification!
As a paralegal of 20yrs I completely agree!!!
True. The system can be corrupt, or mistakes can be made. I agree that some evil oelnes deserve it, but too many others do not.
The death penalty should never apply if there is not 100% DNA evidence or any doubts whatsoever. Bad enough to be locked up wrongly, but execution is irreversible and makes us no better than the criminals.
The question is if it is a deterrent to committing capital murder or not.
He knew he was innocent but he didn't fight. He died with more class than a lot of people live.

Parchman. I’ve been to this prison before visiting family.
Then you're a moron.
This is an edited version of the original- according to the lawyer in the unedited version, Edward didn’t believe it was going to happen, particularly because of the cameras filming.
No Edward did not believe it was going to happen because he was innocent had nothing to do with the cameras rolling as he had been already spoken for when they said that he was a model citizen in the prison and that everybody likes him and I'll positive and meeting mid spirited he was very calm quiet and pleasant to be around although he awaited his fate he really firmly believe that he would be parted due to his innocence but he also had negative and afflictions in his mind knowing that he was in a racially-divided state of Mississippi where presidents is known about the racist motives that were attempted throughout the whole case racism is a very strong thing as white people walk on White privilege and blacks walk on black clouds we have always been treated unfair and injust and it just shows you how far it can go
Innocent, or was, no wonder they banned it. He was an amazing guy, 😢 the guilty party is out there somewhere and has lived a full life
I watch quite a bit of death row documentaries like Death Row stories and kind of have an instinct of telling if someone is innocent or not. I truly believe Edward was framed and targeted due to racism. RIP Edward. You're in a better place now.

RIP Edward Earl Johnson (June 22, 1960 - May 20, 1987). Thank you Edward, your courage to allow this production has saved lives. Since Edward's murder, by the state of Mississippi, thirteen states have abolished the death penalty. It made a difference! It should be noted that the documentary was made by the BBC, a British organization. As well, it took British lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, to at least make sure Edward would not be forgotten. He also wrote a piece called "No steps forward for some: Edward Earl Johnson at sixty" on July 8, 2020 that provides more details into story. Sadly, it took a foreign lawyer, and foreign news organization to muster enough courage to document plight of Edward Earl Johnson. No American news organization, or media outlet had the courage to document the full story.
Another well documented case of the horrors of execution is that of Cameron Todd Willingham (January 9, 1968 - February 17, 2004) . As the story goes, he was a possibly innocent American man who was convicted and executed for the murder of his three young children by arson at the family home in Corsicana, Texas, on December 23, 1991.
Getting it right is not worth the price of getting wrong. We can point to cases like Timothy McVeigh, and Ted Bundy, where it's quite certain they were vicious murderers. McVeigh admitted it. Budey denied it. But you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who claims they were innocent. Still, they we're both executed, and the media portrayed it in a morally defunct way. They turned both instances into a celebration of sorts. It was barbaric and portrayed a chilling end of life in celebratory fashion. Like a hanging in town square. This type of mentality is what perpetuates executions. Just like Clive Stafford Smith said after Edward's execution: “It’s a sick world. It’s a sick world.”
What happened with the 60 year old woman they say he robbed and tried to assault? She said it wasn't him....they just ignored that! So disgraceful, horrendous and torturous to this brave man and his family.
And you have to remember this isn't Mississippi one of the worst white supremacist countries in the world and one of the most biased and racist set of higher-ups in the world come out of Mississippi and a lot of other places in the South a lot of these black men were wrongly convicted will wrongly executed until this day they will hide they will use all kind of exhibitionist to keep it away from the public because when DNA evolved they found out that these men were innocent and they have to pay millions and millions of dollars to the families that have lost loved ones or to the people that have sat in jail for you know 40-plus years for something they had nothing to do with just because they were BLACK
It's the south. Back then and even now as long as they can take out a black person then they will guilty or not.
Because there was no doubt was the cop's slaying so they didn't care what the lady said.
That's what I hate the most, they deliberately executed this Man.
I'm so sorry for this senseless loss to his family and loved ones.. I'm so dissapointed in the corruption of these people who threatened him into a false confession.. this makes me so sad.. Watching this documentary had a profound impact on me . I believe this man is innocent and we need to abolish the death penalty. I been a conservative my whole life and still am and we need to do better, we need to eliminate the death penalty and have life sentence being the harshest penalty. As a white male who has lived and worked in many different states including Mississippi I have witnessed racism many times and I know this happens. Lastly I send prayers to this man's family and for his soul in heaven. Lastly we need to fix this because it ain't right
I disagree about the abolishing of the death penalty.Example you tube ( the boy who was fed to pigs) Adrian Jones 8 yo was tortured for years he recieved daily beatings was starved was made to stand outside in a swimming pool for hours naked in the middle of winter, made to eat handcuffed out of a maggot infested bowl outside with his mouth, placed in a shower stall to live, tazored on a daily basis, strapped in a device for hours at a time, sliced his face open with a broom and then gave them stitches themselves. This isn't even the half of the abuse it got worse. You could see him just withering away in the pictures. When the child finally surcame to his injuries they fed him to pigs. The evidence was found on their own icloud accounts of the torture. How could there ever be any real justice for that child accept for death? How could you not want to take justice in your own hands? There really is not a whole lot of suffering for life in prison. They make friends are fed sheltered play cards etc. They can adjust. Like I said not all cases should qualify for a death sentence but for the extreme cases with overwhelming evidence to support their guilt. I have no problem with people like that frying.
This is so tragic, listening to him tell his story is very upsetting.
I had such a hard time watching this. My heart just broke for this man and his family. To all the police, judges, governors and anyone who played a roll in killing this innocent man I hope you have your day in court. Whether it be in life or on judgment day in front of God. This is why I'm so against the death penalty.
Those who endorse the DP do not have the slightest of problems with anyone innocent dying from time to time along the way. Oh well, better the innocent die than the guilty live behind bars.

Honestly I bet he thought anywhere but here will be a better place, this is truly sad
Biblically it's impossible to make friends with white people overall but on a individual basis it's possible but not overall. I have to look at D* row and inmates doing life with no parole. And hear them say hoped it was another way. I agree! This case was a railroading case, just because he was black. I wonder if they kept any hair, saliva, etc., that they could do a DNA on, today. Bet they'd find he was innocent. But God is the one who does the real judging.
I pray this man was granted more mercy, grace, and peace upon his execution death.
Heck....a white husband in Washington State was accused of raping and murdering his wife, was found guilty based on the kind of truck he drove. Years after he was executed, DNA was done, and they found the man was innocent. It took a few years for the DA's office, the Judge, and the 3 police officers to finally get their justice from the justice system....they all lost their jobs, were disbarred, and the State had to pay millions to his family for the care of his children.
It was found that the police and DA planted evidence to get him convicted. But the DNA rape kit swab was still there....and the same judge kept allowing the evidence that proved he was innocent, to be suppressed. That case went to the Supreme Court. It was a big smear on that Washington State County's justice system. Washington State rewrote death penalty laws and police detective homicide procedures.
This kind of injustice happens to white people too. It's just a severe case of corruption throughout America's justice system. That's why almost every state revamped Death Row appeals and added enough time for a wrongfully convicted person to have their cases reviewed and added the number of appeals that would allow time for better technology to be developed to prevent an innocent person's wrongful execution.
God bless this poor man! I pray he is at peace.
Hope so too
Just because it didn't (justice) happen immediately don't mean it won't. People forget that.

@Jean Carlo henrique you need proof that he killed someone. If you actually do some digging or read an actual book on the case that with the cop case there wasnt an actual witness who saw the persons face!!!!!!!!!! &+ in the other case of the assult of the 60year old woman... She changed her story multiple times. Picked out several different people in every one of the photo line ups she had to do. I mean come on!!! You have absolutely no infinitive proof... Proof beyond a reasonable doubt right??? Absolutely not!!!! Then with the cop case they find the woman he was with in the pool hall all along and she never went anywhere, they never even looked for her!!!! The lawyers found her and she didnt get back until after the fact he was gone but the lawyers took the info to every court room, 2 every judge and none of them, not even the mayor said "ok, hold up, lets go get this woman. At least give a stay until after they talk to her??? But they didnt even do that!!!!!! Thats as bad as a different case 2day where there is dna proof but the judge just doesnt want to wait on the test... To murder someone bc you "just dont feel like it" thats disgusting and a person who isnt all about finding and digging to get the absolute truth should not have a job with any part of the judicial system PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You fell for his fake virtue signaling? He gets paid to murder an innocent man!
@@joanbaczek2575 do you actually think that I believe that the warden or the CO’s are worried on a personal level rather then a professional level? Fake or not, this man went to the gas chamber without fighting (physically) causing any problems in any way and with the feeling that everyone there with him cared about his well being and state of mind. The actions made his death as peaceful as it could be under the circumstances. I also didn’t share my beliefs about the death penalty. And the reason why I was moved by the wardens behaviour is because he was able to put aside whatever his beliefs and opinions are and carried out this execution with a level of professionalism that many people could not and it proves to me that whatever the circumstances are and whatever the punishment is, it doesn’t have to be carried out in a cold heartless manner. The whole appeals process is traumatizing to the victim, the victims family, the inmate, the inmates family and all of the professionals involved as it drags out for so long with the ups and downs torturing everyone involved so it was nice to see that this execution was done with respect and consideration for all parties.

@@JstJayn there isn't as much hate as the media makes it look like
He was peaceful because he knew his own crimes put him there. Just about every death row inmate claims that they're innocent, with most taking the truth with them to the ground. The overwhelming majority of those people are cold blooded murderers who have been convicted of capital murder by 1) the arresting officers, 2) the DA, and 3) a jury of their peers. It takes a monumental screwup across numerous levels of the criminal and judicial systems in order to send an innocent person to death row and execute them. It's happened once or twice in modern memory, and advancements in DNA evidence ensure that won't happen again. Anyone claiming that this man is innocent based on his words and actions as he prepares to face execution is only reacting to a made-for-TV drama that was designed to elicit an emotional response from viewers.
And wow the point he made about the numbers on death row who can't afford a lawyer is bang on. Having money or not affects your chances massively in the US.Even in 2020 the amount of inmates on death row that are minorities or had no money for a lawyer is huge compared to being white or having money, even comparing death sentence to life sentences. Equality in the justice system should be a given, not a myth by now. Hearing the lawyer say basically if all of the case was put in front of a court now it would basically be thrown out. But cos of press/public opinion ect, what's "fair" won't happen screams lack of justice.
Guess what? Happens in ALL countries.
It's called the old " money talks & bullshit walks" defense.
Failed logic. There are more poor whites than blacks.

This documentary is heartbreaking, and terrifying. Mississippi, corrupt cops, unreliable identification, and a man who quite possibly was totally innocent is put to death!! Someone comes forward who was with him at the time of the crime and can provide an alibi, but is sent away and told to "mind her own business". Individuals including the warden believe that he's innocent, but are unable to do anything to save this man's life. I hope that those responsible for this injustice are haunted every single day of their lives. Rest in peace among the angels young man.
Leaving a stay of execution to the ‘wire’ is the definition of cruel and unusual...
I 100% agree!! Mental torture!!
all these people that don't believe he did the crime.. not one of them stopped it from happening..
just doing their job..
sounds like something the SS troops said...
Shouldn’t be a “wire” to reach, the death penalty is wrong, to many innocent people have been executed, and you can’t take that back, better to have them in prison and let them go if or when they are proved innocent, you can’t dig up a corpse and resurrect them, only God, if your a believer, can do that. Being on death row, especially if you ARE innocent, is definitely “cruel and unusual punishment”, and all the time the USA criticises, in their foreign policy, other countries human rights record or their oppressive political system (North Korea, China, and Russia), its just “don’t do as I do, do as I say”.
Ipsychologically, it’s abusive and a form of torture.... changes need to be implemented to prevent that type of mental hell for them... it’s inhumane IMO
I wasn't really expecting much out of this but my goodness that was gut wrenching.
It was.
He kept his dignity. The real crime was when those law enforcement officers were taking him to Jackson and stopped beside a busy hwy, at night and forced a confession out of him. What do you think they would have done to him? I’m sure at the very least he would have gotten a near fatal beating, at worst gotten shot and they would have said he was trying to run or had grabbed one of their guns. He didn’t have a chance once they set sights on him.

This is one of the most tragic injustices I have ever heard. Mr Johnson was so gentle, so full of peace , so beautiful. How do these prosecutors , judges and police officers live with themselves? And why didn't that woman speak up earlier???

I am a Catholic. I don't believe in abortion. Abortion is murdering unborn children, their is a fetal heart beat, but a doctor with no morals goes into the woman's uterus and with a saw, cuts the arms and legs and finally cuts the neck. You can see on ultrasound the fetus fighting to stay alive and I am raging mad against abortion. So, if I cannot be against abortion, how can I be in favor of capital punishment? The unborn child has no representation in court, but is still killed. A person who is given even the worst lawyer in the world to defend them, they still have the opportunity to appeal for inadequate representation.
Keeping a person on death row for 8 years is torture. If you just executed them the moment they were found guilty, guilty or not, God will welcome them in to heaven for having been the victim of an unjust killing. If they actually did kill the victim in a most heinous manner and they don't repent even at the last moment, they will go to Hell. God will forgive anybody and everybody if the condemned person reaches out to him even at the last moment. In Red China, they take the convicted person(s) and give them a bottle of whiskey and put them in a cell for a couple of hours until they are roaring drunk then take them out in the courtyard and put a bullet in the back of their head, and medical technicians jump out of their ambulances and start harvesting organs. Which is the better way? Neither. put the accused in the deepest hole in prison and keep him in their for seven days let him out for half a day for sunshine and then back in the hole for the rest of the their life.
