I don't see how in world Frank is never mentioned with along the greatest guitarists ever. Seriously do you think Hendrix, Clapton and Page were better. Highly doubt it.
In terms of the breadth of tones and genres covered, it's not even close. The latter I had always known, the former it took a little longer to really listen closely and learn more about the guitar. Disclaimer for the sensitive: Nothing against Hendrix, Clapton, Page.
I thought Jimi was the best guitarist ever, until I heard Frank. I repented. Frank is not only a better guitarist, but a better all round musician in any way one would care to measure him.
He is mentioned and he deserves to be, not least for his melodic freedom/abandon/imagination, something he will have recognised in the work of Django Reinhardt. Frank was also superb with effects. Arguably one thing that he did not have was the kind of vibrato that BB King could just throw out there for days on end, because, to my mind, there was a kind of horizontal soloish disposable-note-after-disposable-note thing in a lot of Frank's playing that was possibly closer to raga soloing than a lot of other high-level guitar in the West has been. He was never going to strike a chord with everyone but to me he's just great.
I swear, I love Zappa's musical world and language - and what he led his players to create - so much that it almost hurts my head. It's just so, so beautiful. Astounding and enriching, Frank's art has improved my life SO very much. Love.
The lyrics to “More Trouble Everyday” could have been written yesterday - just an amazing song. Hard to believe that I was listening to this album 45 years ago in high school.
I met Napoleon Murphy Brock & Ike Willis on South St. in Philly right after watching an impromptu KISS impersonation band in an alley (playing early stuff, i.e. Cold Gin, Got to Choose...) on Halloween. How could I ever forget THAT fuckin' scenario? 😎
Also in the top ten "live" albums: "Get Yer Ya-Yas Out" - The Rolling Stones "Live At Leeds" - The Who "Live at the Fillmore East" - The Allman Brothers "Live at the Fillmore East" Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.

This band was FZ's favourite! He referred to it many times. If you think this is good check out some of the great bootlegs from later in the tour. They were whipping through all the complicated stuff at twice the speed!! The 'tone' on his SG at this point was wicked beyond belief!
Cedric Harris When FZ had put together the mobile UMRK, many studio recordings were built from live tracks. New material was tested live, and evolved, before it was committed to vinyl. Few musicians operated this way - concert attendees tend to want to hear the familiar stuff, which is why good cover bands can get good employment in clubs, as long as they are able to endure the boredom of playing the same tunes every day, and at least look like they enjoy it. FZ broke several molds.

This album was 1/2 of my first music purchase, the other being Fillmore East by the Allman Brothers. Those two albums are never out of my rotation 50 years later.
I've played lead guitar professionally in 3 rock bands, had FM airplay back in the day, played all kinds of venues, lots of studio work...love Vai, Satriani, Guthrie Govan, Lukather (even Bill Nelson ("who?!")...all those guys. But I keep coming back to this exquisite, moaning, all-Hell-breaking loose Frank Zappa solo... it's so wretched, raunchy, odd, brutal, and heartfelt awesome...crammed full of soul. And that one, brutal, stringed exclamation, "Oh Lawd, watch out, now...look out!" bend, from 2:53 - 2:55... ...that is why I keep coming back to this. Hands down, this is my favorite rock guitar solo of all time.
Man, for me it just starts the goosebumps when he rips in at 2:22 on the track - the most unique and spine-tingling guitar work I have ever heard. I have just about all of his work in some form or other and this is still, I agree, a masterpiece. Fucking sublime. All hail FZ - king of them all!
Shit. The Black Page .... uh huh. I don't know how to express my opinion of this, except shit. The Black Page. I'm a keyboard player; I look at that chart and say ...The Black page. Shit!!!
Chester took the drum break with him when he was drumming for Genesis... This is what Phil Collins said..."The thing that clinched me with Chester was a song called "More Trouble Every Day" (by Zappa, on Roxy & Elsewhere), which he and Ralph Humphrey play, and I heard that drum fill, which we actually do at the end of "Afterglow". They did that fill on the Zappa song and it floored me completely. I saw what two drummers could do. It could be like a machine. I play flams quite a lot, and with my flams and another drummer you get this huge, sort of solid, thick, backbeat. So one of the first things we did when I met Chester was get him to teach me that lick, and we always put it in the show somewhere. But that was really just listening to him. I had never met him. I rang him up and said, "Hi Chester, I've heard your stuff, would you like to play with Genesis?" He came over as a member. He didn't even audition. He just came over and set up his drums and was started rehearsing."
Saw the actual recording of 1/2 of this album at The Edinboro State College Extravaganza on Mother's Day 1974. It was truly epic, unforgettable, and life-changing!!! I was in this audience that nite.....wow!!!!!
My girlfriend was not really a Zappa fan. Today, now my wife of 46 years we still talk about that concert. She became a huge fan that nite. It's one of our favorite memories 🎸
Holy Mother Of God! The solo in Son Of Orange County still moves me to tears. It’s the most evocative, beautifully crafted of all FZ’s solos and the segue into More Trouble Every Day where Chester’s drum fills just thunder that sequence into life - no wonder Phil Collins employed him into Genesis without even auditioning him. This album is a fucking masterpiece. Genius.
Frank was one of a kind, my friend. He did things his way and was never beholdin' to anyone. The only person Frank ever answered to was Frank...period.
+William L. This song just...it...well...it makes me happy of myself. I'm glad I was able to hear this. It will be one of my favorite memories I take with me when I go.
This is the best version on record, the guitaring is bang on, there's a bit of everything jazz blues rock all wrapped up into 1 special tune to me, perfection 👌
Saw Zappa in 73 and Yes a month later. Hendrix twice, The Flock once, Beach Boys, Stones, the Warlocks before they changed their name, the Dead and everyone else. Yes, Zappa was the Best.
chills all over the body from 04:25 to about 4:50. and again at 6:00 to 6:30. no other guitar solo would ever go so directly under the skin... That's not music, it's pure erotic ;-)
I have to aggree totally... Check out other great guitarrists as Steve Vai, former Stunt guitarrist of FZ. Orianthi Panagaris Shooting Star... I'd love to see one of them, maybe together?
Everyone is going for the guitar solo, and don't get me wrong, is out of this world. But what about the bass, man? Can't you hear that baby on the background too???
This album is still a classic. As only Zappa could do it. The guitar solos are some of the best. Each has a unique sound and each musician has to be one of the best.
Keep in mind that most of Franks solos were impromptu. Done on the spot. This shows his real genius. Most leads have a climax to them which gives structure and also they tell a story on its own. And no one has the style Frank had. One of a kind.
It was said to have been written in response to the song 'All You need Is Love' (Around 1968) The reference to Nixon's words were added years later at this live performance.(May,1974) Nixon had just recently said it,and resigned a few months later. (August,1974)
I was at this show at Edinboro State College, Mothers Day 1974. We didn't know he was recording live that nite but did notice how much equipment, trucks, etc were there. Only time We had ever seen so much gear was at Floyd shows. But man, Frank & band were magical that nite. One for the ages.
This lp is indeed stunning, especially this portion. I couldn't have come up with the guitar solo in s.o.o.c. with my wildest imagination. The subtleties are freaking brilliant.
The tension and release segue from one track to the other is just sublime. Those four bendy B notes ringing out plangent and blue make up one of the great moments in guitar music.
I saw Zappa in 1973 with a variation of this lineup. He is also a great accompanist and I watched him getting into his own music and enjoying the playing of this awesome band. His guitar says things to me that are different from other players but I avoid comparisons, so and so is better than some other player etc. However this solo is total filth. Exactly what he was aiming for I believe!
Simply incredible, a musical performance that encapsulates everything great about real music. The drumming and percussion work on this entire double lp is unbelievable.
These two are my favourite Frank solos, along with Fifty-Fifty. I still get a kick out of these performances decades on!
Sublime guitar work I feel
As satisfying as the best solos by Beck, McLaughlin, Holdsworth, Blackmore, diMeola etc IMO. Uncanny structure and ideas.
@@AlmostEthical Not just 'as satisfying', the greatest, ever and forever!!! The complete band here was just stellar!
@@WillieEWoof Can't argue.
Love these tracks but really a fan of 'Yo Moma'.
Precision at its finest, great choice of tunes!
i consider this to be played at the funeral of my dear friend and Zappa Fanatic T. W. on Friday
Hey man... I like to imagine T. with Frank talking somewhere about music and politics over a beer ❤ Hugs from Rome
I find myself thinking that this is the greatest guitar solo ever... but how can I choose, their all so good!
One of the best - ever,
this is one of those songs that I like to call a life changer. Raw as fuck.
This just in. You don't have to choose. So relax!
I agree, one of the finest solos ever.
No! You are right this is a fabulous guitar solo. Mr. Zappa was highly underrated on his guitar skills
Thank GOD for my father. He raised me on this shit. Love you dad!
Parenting done right 😊
I don't see how in world Frank is never mentioned with along the greatest guitarists ever. Seriously do you think Hendrix, Clapton and Page were better. Highly doubt it.
Rolling Stone rates him No. 11 in the top 100 all time. Not sure I agree that he should be that low on the list, but . . .
In terms of the breadth of tones and genres covered, it's not even close. The latter I had always known, the former it took a little longer to really listen closely and learn more about the guitar.
Disclaimer for the sensitive: Nothing against Hendrix, Clapton, Page.
wonderfulness..his whole take on life is absolutely free only if you want to be
I thought Jimi was the best guitarist ever, until I heard Frank. I repented. Frank is not only a better guitarist, but a better all round musician in any way one would care to measure him.

One of Zappa's greatest albums.
Certainly one of his tightest lineups he played with
I swear, I love Zappa's musical world and language - and what he led his players to create - so much that it almost hurts my head. It's just so, so beautiful. Astounding and enriching, Frank's art has improved my life SO very much. Love.

Quite simply, this has slowly but surely become my favorite Zappa solo.
Just to me..best guitar lead to this song of all. And there are a few. Rest easy FZ...
The worlds best guitarist without a doubt. Forever in our hearts.
"the world`s best guitarist without a doubt" amongst a whole pantheon of "world`s best guitarists without a doubt".

Roxy & Elsewhere is so overdubbed that it barely counts as a live album.
