  • Television broadcast of the first part of this concert at Jazz Middelheim 1995.
    Cecil Taylor: piano
    Rashid Bakir: Drums
    Thurman Barker: Percussion
It was one of the first jazz concerts I attended, on a thursday evening in a large tent. A curious setting with a very mixed public. Next to us sat a mother with her child (approximately 10 years old).
On the site on 50 years of Middelheim Jazz Festival it says:
The programmers sometimes made bold choices that not everyone understood. When Cecil Taylor, one of the pioneers of free jazz, was allowed to close the opening night of the festival in 1995, there was a serious clash with the bosses. “After 10 minutes the piano was completely out of tune because the man hit it really hard. Some people left,” says Marc Van den Hoof. "Everyone was there on the opening evening, the VRT management, the sponsors," says Rob Leurentop. "After the concert, Piet Van Roe (the then boss of the radio) jumped out of his skin and made quite a racket. Which is a bit bizarre, if you know that Cecil Taylor is generally recognized as one of the great piano virtuosos ."
