    Oh man I was just wondering how to do it, my attempt had the thumb behind the index finger as a kind of back support and it didn't work

    Dear Sensei, I assume that best body targets for hits with Keiko Ken, Nakadaka Ippon Ken and Boshi Ken would be head zone and neck/ throat. Can they be used for damaging ribs, solar plexus, kidneys or other torso targets ?

      Most definitely they can be aimed at various targets to the torso and limbs.

    Dear Sensey, Thank you very much for this video! It is perfectly clear now how to form and how to strike with it. We would appreciate if you could make video how to form the Thumb Thrust as it seems to be also pretty much devastating. Thank you in advance!

      Okay, I'll see what I can do in regards to the thumb thrust.

      Thank you in advance! I think the right name is Bushi Ken. Master Shinjo Sensei of Goyu Ryu School often demonstrates this thumb trust for board breaking demo

      It's called boshi-ken 拇指拳 in Japanese. And you probably mean shinjo kiyohide Sensei who is actually Uechi-ryu. The thumb strike is a specialty in Uechi-ryu.

    MJW bought me here he uses middle knuckle to punch his enemy's stomach

    There is a way of doing the extended knuckles so that it will not collapse upon impact.

    why would you strike this way if its less powerful and more damaging to the hand, i must be missing the point?

      Good question. If one is going to use this fist then it will be aimed at specific targets. It's also not advisable to use the fist if you haven't spent at least some time familiarizing yourself with its structure. To answer your question though we could say 'why poke someone in the eye?' It's less powerful than a punch however it certainly has its place. Does that help?

      Have you seen a brass knuckle? or a ring with big "head", instead of using that in a fight use your extended knuckles.

    What applications does this ippon ken have compared to the one found in Suparinpei?

    • @GKCgoju
      @GKCgoju  7 років тому

      Do you mean is it the same fist formation as in the kata suparinpei, or are you asking about the application on an opponent?

      GKCgoju both, actually. Is there much functional difference compared to having the thumb within the finger? On a makiwara, the one in this video feels like a better option

      I would say there are different ways to make this fist. The thumb inside will either create less up and down support of the forefinger, or it will mean the knuckle will not protrude as far. It will however create a narrower overall fist top to bottom. For me the fist in the video is the one I use in suparinpei kata, and the nakadaka in seipai kata.
