  • The heat equation, also known as the diffusion equation, is central to many areas in applied mathematics. In this series of four lectures - this is the second - forming part of the first year undergraduate mathematics course, 'Fourier Series and PDEs', the heat equation is derived and the boundary value problem is solved using the method of separation of variables.
Students are then shown how they can use the theory of Fourier series, taught in the preceding lectures, to solve the initial value problem. The behaviour of the solutions is discussed mathematically and in the context of physical applications.
You can watch many other student lectures via our main Student Lectures playlist (also check out specific student lectures playlists):

All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.

This reminds me of when I was an undergraduate doing physics there.
After the first few weeks of this kind of stodge I stayed in bed until lunchtime each day, woke up and ate, and then took the syllabus to the library and sorted it out by myself.
After the first few weeks of the first Michaelmas term in the first year I never went near the lecture theaters again.

Are students not allowed to ask questions during class....?

They have tutorials later in the week where, in twos with their tutor, they get to ask as much as they like and to discuss the topics and problem sheets.

Hi there. Sorry for interrupting you, but I want to share something very important. Yes, much more important than you think. Please read untill the end because I wanna tell you about JESUS. If you have ever heard about HIM, I wanna tell you that HE really died for us, this isn't a fairytale. GOD brought me to this video just to share the gospel to you. I could have just gone to another video or to another person that commented here, but GOD chose you. Dont dissapoint HIM. So, I want to show you how you can get saved. BELIEVE JESUS DIED FOR YOU AND ACCEPT HIM AS LORD as Romans 10:9 says:" If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Yes, we are not saved by works but by faith in HIM alone. Ephesians 2:8-9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast."
We may not realize it, but billions of people are headed to hell and we have to warn them!
Matthew 7:13-14: "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."
TODAY IS THE DAY OF SALVATION!
If you want to hear more about JESUS and HIS LOVE,please read the bible. I recommend reading Matthew, Mark, Luke and John first.
LOVE YOU! GOD BLESS YOU! AMEN!
