What happened to thousands of defunct Spin scooters

- A pile of broken scooters electric scooters seems never ending. Ben Baker owns Summit e-Waste, an electronic recycling facility. In August, Baker took on the slew of Spin scooters.
Someone get that repair guy another light bulb. He's working with one random light in a dark basement.
And a powered screwdriver too.
@@bandido7994 Yea that would save a year or two.
One guy . One a day. At least he has job security. He is going to have to show someone else how to fix them. He will die doing this work for the rest of his life
this is a one light bulb factory
That lightbulb came from his homeland mother Russia where he was a nuclear physicist
Respect to the lonely guy in the dark room fixing them.
yea, he knows how to find a job that pays and is consistent. Working alone? dang what a lucky dog
He rocks!
Eventually, this will get outsourced to a developing nation where labour is less expensive and as the expertise of that labour drops, the products will just be sold as scrap metal even though some could be refurbished. There's a reason why so few of our small appliances are repaired...
This is how the spin corporation avoids the cost and legality of dealing with disposal, and get a tax write off.
if you make a company that provides this level of utility to a corporation, you're sure to win... right?
They (like many corporations) have absolutely no concern for the environment. I hope that 8,000 potential customers of Spin don't buy a new one, and get one that's recycled.
It takes government regulation to force companies to set aside funds in escrow for suitable product disposal. They'd rather just go out of business then deal with the mess they created... This is also true of oil wells, in jurisdictions that do not require funds be reserved in escrow, companies simply go out of business instead of safely sealing decommissioned oil wells. Unless we regulate this problem, it will be the tax payer that will pay for safe disposal.
This makes me think of all the endless stream of stuff in US we manufacture, sell and buy later to dispose of, give away or hopefully recycle in this country truly mind blowing. We are drowning in stuff..
Amazon UK used to landfill all of their returns- even in new condition. Such a waste considering it could go to those in need and the valuable space it occupies in landfills. You can look it up.
@@JoeGator23 Wow I thought the UK was better in that way I guess not.. Sad.

That fire, when it eventually starts, will burn for years.
We used to worry about tire fires at recycling yards. Those were the good old days!
and why would there be a fire?

I'd like to get my hands on a number of those scooters. Those lithium battery packs are a gold mine!!!!!
yep take battery packs out start discarding the rest of it in a crusher still make profit turn it into months of work instead of years.
How are lithium batteries a gold mine? They don't have any scrap value so we just throw them away
@@thatdudealex3972 Do your research. The lithium batteries can be harvested and repurposed into other things like electrical storage on solar farms. Worst case scenario if the batteries are completely dead, they can be sent off to recycling centers to extract the lithium to put into new batteries.
@@thatdudealex3972 the price of lithium was extremely high up until the end of January. Sales of EV's in January were horrible and it doesn't look like it's gonna get better. But the batteries are recyclable.
Yeah no, they are pretty much wortless.
Kudos to Ben Baker for recognizing the potential hazards of just throwing these things in a landfill and doing something to repurpose them!
He's not doing it to save the environment... he's doing it to make a dollar...
he is being misleading, landfills have layers of membrane and clay to prevent ground water contamination, this isn't the 1950's
it's hard to believe someone working in the waste recycling business does not know this
the ignorance of some people... he will make about 1,000,000 of all these minus labor
They'll end up in the landfill or ditches eventually
The membranes of landfills eventually overflow so modern landfills are better but not by much, also the anaerobic environment caused by these membranes result in bacteria forming organo metals thereby bringing heavy metals like mercury and lead unto the food chain.
Refurbishing and recycling always requires too much labour, even our rectcling blue bins are only profitable because a subscription is charged to take on the material and even then we just outsource it to less developed nations with lower labour costs and fewer environmental regulations. Unless he was paid to take on all these scrapped scooters, he's just loosing money repairing them.
The fire risk here is off the scale, meaning destruction of pretty much everything we saw in the video on that site and around it.
if someone sets something on fire, those batteries could go up quickly, but if they are all dead....not ones gonna spark so its off the scale in ways they don't measure because its meaningless
that looks like the ebikes piled all over china
Fake news.
no its legit they have been taking them away from people and tossing them away you can see them on google maps even lol@@dmk1529
You're a Chinese bot. We've seen the pictures.
Imagine a pile of scooters looking like another pile of scooters 🤯
But those bikes are at USA Not China , Why China haters right away Blame everything Happen at these world . here You Tube Hundreds of Bloggers Made their their job to " Blame China or Russia " for anything happen in their World .
The firebrigade surely does not know how lithium batteries fail. They fail when charging, but can also explode when run empty... and once one goes; the whole building is on fire. Perhaps this dude waits for this, so he can claim insurance money.
Oh wow. That's a lot of scooters. Glad that Summit eWaste is repairing and refurbishing them so that they don't end up in a landfill. If they sell them online, maybe I'll even buy one.
I need one
They will end up in a landfill, it will just take a few more years.
True paint in other color and resell
He's delaying their arrival in the landfill, not preventing it.
You can sign up for one and eventually they will contact you. $200. Not sure about shipping costs though. Just google Summit eWaste and it comes up.
Kudos to Ben for knowing not to throw into landfill. It was one of the sad things I had to realize when I owned a tech store
I mean everyone does but if it doesn't make you money, then no one cares. This guy doesn't care except about the money hes gonna make because got dang.
If he had to pay just to recycle them himself, he would NEVER have thought twice
This wall-e prequel is so lifelike
Who couldn't see this coming?
the fact they didn't even offer people to buy them was just stupid. They rather pay thousands to throw them away then to let them go for sale for $5 each or whatever.
At $5 that would crash the market for scooters because a company, like this one in the story would buy them, refurbish and sell it for $200 just like they are now.
The difference being, Spin would loose morn money by needing to pay full time sales ppl
but at least they helped save the planet! I can feel the weather improving already
😅😅😅
I Worked with this company crazy to see this!!
Now imagine these scooters being broken down electric vehicles with leaky batteries.

Or put in containers and shipped overseas as e-waste to the third world.
Just delaying the inevitable
Just passing the haz waste disposal to others
I found one of those scooters and wanted to disassemble it for the battery and drive wheel. I spent roughly eight hours trying to get to the battery, finally I gave up and threw the whole thing in the garbage. It literally had NO TWO SCREWS ALIKE.
one guy servicing all those scooters...?
lifetime position
Another employee of the company was featured in the video, but the owner implied there were more.
It's job security for all of the over the next few years and by then they will be able to find more.
The work may seem tedious, but they could listen to an audio book or a podcast while they work. There is a problem solving aspect to the process, there is process improvement. The employees and owner will be experts at both rather quickly and that is a skill that can earn them a very good income.
At least he should provide his employee with some electric tools for removing and reinstalling parts.
@@bandido7994 I'm sure any work being done while this was being filmed was for the benefit of the camera. A loud power tool would have messed with the audio quality of what was being recorded. Also, the screws near the electronics and battery likely should be removed and replaced by hand tools only. Places I have worked have for hidden techs from using power tools around circuit boards because it could strip the screws or affect the electronics.
Is it true that 18 wheeler operators make more money than police officers?
New life for old equipment, always wonderful to see. Of course these days stuff is often old before its 10th birthday.
I'd love to get my hands on some of those parts. Like maybe a dozen motors and battery packs for a robotics project I'd like to do.

how about an after school program - teach some kids how to fix them with an interest in electronics etc - if they become profficient - pay them in scooters one for every x they fix - been overseen can check their work - run a comp on designs for the bikes to personalise - once folks start buying them it they need repair they'll come back to you - know that not intending to run a scooter business but with the amount you have you kinda already in the business of scooters - lot of folks with no licence, to young to drive, cant afford to run a car but would love one - esp if the scooter company isnt available locally any more
brilliant idea honestly - easy & profitable too

All those batteries, killing the environment to go green
Does the app still work, apps seem to stop working after product has been out a year.
I just ordered one. I will need it cuz age and mobility is catching up on me. Seeing old people walking and carry stuff from the small grocery stores makes me sad cuz you can see that difficult time they are having. With this, I know I am getting there. I bought one for that purpose.

Going green has a cost
Exactly, but no one wants to hear it.
This isn't the result of "going green".
Right. Every internal combustion powered vehicle ever made is still in use. There are no junkyards. Right?
That company should be responsible for proper disposal.

Why is there not a link to place. I would buy one.
Just wait until EV vehicles are piled up with massive toxic batteries in the battery scrap yards. Fires that cant be put out. Leaking into creeks, rivers, streams and underground aquifers.
Go to your local lead/acid car battery recycle yard. Everyone has one about no more than 30 minutes from your homes.
Just imagine what will happen when people start retiring gas cars. All that explosive fuel, oils, rubber, plastics. Cars are downright toxic.
I can't imagine that...
Not only that when the cars crash and catch fire the toxic gases that will be released from the batteries is TOXIC and it wont end will for anyoine around it...They will need full SCBA gear during this even the police.
cant use water on the fires.
have to use chemicals to put the fires out, and the chemicals cause cancer!!!

I think that fire official need to be educated. Lithium batteries are not safe as long as they are not plugged in. They maybe less likely to self-combust if they are not plugged in/charging but Lithium batteries can self-combust at any time.
There are more lithium batteries in cordless power tools than all other devices combined. Was at local landfill yesterday. They have 2 semis full of small, consumer lithium batteries for recycling.

There's a wait list so translation they're being thrown away or somebody is coming in and scooping the $200 scooters up for cheaper and then going to resell them for $500. . Which means they will ultimately end up back at another E-Waste facility in a year or so.
What a waste to throw these away. I want one. How much are they selling it for?
Re-using is the most important part of RE-CYCLING! Great to see they have work for a few years, hopefully they will get rich with the project! Fun project would be for new owners to do SUPERVISED soldering & replacement work themselves!
