  • Joey on the Hill: Vitale's Bakery
In 1976, Grace (Bommarito) and her husband Pete Vitale moved her grandfather’s business from its downtown location to The Hill. Pete’s bakery is now run by third-generation siblings, Angie, Sam, and Michael, with the fourth generation waiting in the wings. Offering a vast array of Italian cookies and breads, Vitale’s also offers Sicilian cannoli, touted by many as The Hill’s best. 65,000 pizza shells and 750,000 loaves of bread go out the door to clients every week! Among the most popular: Sicilian-style bread and St. Louis-style gooey butter cookies. Check out the locally famous, weather-protected Blessed Virgin Mary statue on the roof. There were several businesses on the site prior, including Campisi’s grocery store.
Joey on the Hill takes you to some of the most iconic spots in St. Louis's Italian neighborhood, The Hill. You can learn more about The Hill in Joe's book, "The Hill: A Walk through History," available here: www.reedypress...
