Conversation Heart Mini Cakes-How-to

This week we are Mixing-It-Up in the kitchen with mini cakes shaped like the candy Conversation hearts. This is a perfect way to celebrate Valentine's day. Have a party or just make one special cake for someone you love. Change the words to suit the recipient! If you don't have letter cutters or you're short on time pipe the message or use edible food markers.
LOOK DOWN BELOW for all the materials you'll need.
WHAT YOU NEED:
YIELDS: 6 individual hearts
CAKE
1 cake recipe
1 frosting recipe
MATERIALS
2 pounds of fondant
½ ounce gum paste (for letters)
Food coloring gels: rose pink, lemon yellow, leaf green, violet, electric pink
Cornstarch (for rolling out fondant)
Shortening (for rolling out gum paste)
EQUIPMENT
Heart cutter (approx. 4 ¼" x 4 ¼") or template
X-acto knife
Six heart shaped cardboard or foam core hearts (approx. 4 ¼" x 4 ¼")
Small serrated knife
Small offset spatula
Scalpel or paring knife
Fondant smoothers
Small rolling pin
Small paintbrush
Tappet Letter cutters (optional)
