    Twitter should stop calling the $8/mo, 'verification'. It's lust a subscription for better features. The should have a separate mechanism for verification.

    8 a month is worth it twitter actually gets rid of those impersonating accounts.

    imho twitter is a great place for learning and inspiration if you only stay in certain areas, like the science (except medical... ) and art communities. But on the other hand, it's a sh*thole in most of other areas, like politics, entertainment, business, etc...

    Sun, now that Twitter is banning impersonation account, do you think your friend can now ban the fake user before the fake user ban the real person?

    Just impersonate Elon and see how quickly things change.

    Oh my impression was that the whole idea of "verification" disappears, other than a second tag mentioning someone being a political figure etc. The blue checkmark becomes a "subscriber badge" essentially. Is that not the case? I thought it was better than the status quo.
    Also I think the fear of impersonation is overblown. It already happens in UA-cam and if the creator wanted, they can do the "reddit AMA" image/video thing where they hold a sign with their username + telling people how to spot fake accounts.

    How about everyone starts at $8 per month paid to the user in tokens for using Twitter? Isn't Twitter working towards a web3 philosophy?

    Sorry Sun, I'm not with you on this one. I agree anyone should be able to be verified if they can present enough concurrent credentials, but it's also a business. As you said, it used to be very difficult to get verified. In the past it's basically taken knowing someone or being a major name. Now, anyone with the concurrent credentials and $8 a month can be verified. I see this as a net positive.

      Good feedback… I partially agree… problem is that solving problem with money might disincentivize Twitter from solving it for everyone (another way of seeing this is pay to play… which one could argue goes against free speech).

    • @cobbhc
      @cobbhc Рік тому +2

      @@sunknudsen You are right. It *is* pay to play, but it's a private business that has to make money, especially with advertisers being pressured to jump ship. He has to make money somewhere, and it's still better than it was. I won't be interested in ponying up until he frees the political prisoners, though.

      The argument about this change going against free-speech does not make any sense. You can still use Twitter completely free. A.k.a. free speech.

      @@cobbhc this isn’t just about the business, this is also about trust, which money does not solve. Both are problems, but the trust problem is worse.
      The problem is what this does to non-blue check marks. Anyone can pay $8, how do they prevent the malicious fake accounts, like Sun’s friend experienced?

    • @cobbhc
      @cobbhc Рік тому +2

      @@CookeAaronJ I agree. I think for this to work you would have to keep some kind of human-approved verification system. You don't get your check mark until your credentials are verified, and only then does your account get charged.

    I love the #fediverse for this. On #mastodon e. g. you can put links in your profile and verify ownership via a back-link on your website. It's incredibly easy and makes it harder for scammers. Surely, they _could_ make a copy of a website as well, but it is *much harder* to fake this, than a stupid twitter account and paying a few bucks to the scary twitter dude.
