1950s Abandoned Country House Restaurant * Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House *

- In this video im exploring the Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House restaurant that was first established in 1954, by the name Bonna's Cafe.
As the restaurant's success grew, several additions were constructed throughout the 1970s and in 1977, the name was changed from Bonna's Cafe to Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House.
The Restaurant was well known in Cleveland for its world class polka music and performances.
Frank Sterle designed this place to resemble his childhood home.
After Frank Sterle's death in 1986, the restaurant was taken over by Mike Longo
& Margot Glinski.
Despite the change in ownership, the restaurant continued to serve traditional Slovenian dishes and had weekly polka performance and dancing.
This building has been abandoned since 2017.
This building is in pretty good shape despite the vandalism and slight structural damage.
The restaurant looks like is currently undergoing renovations and I'm sure this place will be used again in the near future.
while exploring, I found a broken water pipe flooding the basement causing lots of damage. Hopefully they fix it soon.
Watch the end of the video for a surprise!!!!
Watch the whole video.
And surprise at the end!!!
Great to see you 🥰
Hey my dude always waiting for the great video's an excellent work thanks be safe bro 💪
So ready for the next one bro Sanatorium
Looks amazing! Can’t wait for the video!! 😀
Hi, love your videos you’re doing some excellent work. I have a suggestion. Do you feel that The House of Wills would be a place you’d be willing to explore? Has an amazing story to it, check it out and see what you think.
My mom worked there for over 30 years. She was the strudel maker. It’s very sad to see it looking like this now. Gosh, it was an amazing place when Frank and then Margot ran it. Delicious homemade food made by ladies from the Old Country. Cleveland lost a gem.
The commentor above you, may know your mother. Said they were there, as well
I bet her strudel was exquisite 😊😊
Cleveland has so much history they're just letting rot.
I used to go to this place back in the 80's and the Hofbrau House that was just down the road from it.. Sad to see them both gone/closed.
Sad.. at least you have memories of how nice this place use to be.
Hofbrau house has been reopened for a few years in Cleveland, sadly Sterles was a failed reboot In the polka world, sadly not enough musicians and fans to keep the polkas going in Cleveland compared to what it was in the 50s through id say 90s
@@tjrox03 I recall they knocked down the old building, and turned it into a parking lot, is the new Hofbrau on the Eastside? (I moved away years ago)
It was directly across the street
It was a beautiful, hopping place back in the day. Frank Sterle was an immigrant from Slovenia who created his dream to have a Slovenian gostilna (tavern) in the heart of the old St. Clair Slovenian neighborhood. It started small and kept expanding. Great food. Wienerschnitzel (breaded veal), Slovenian sausage, strudel. No menus...your waitress would rattle off the menu from memory. Music by popular polka bands every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I played on that stage many a Saturday nite. When my buddy Chris Benda and I started our polka band in 1976 (I was 23; Chris was 16), Frank gave us our break by booking us at the Country House. The place was always jammed. and the dance floor full. I can still hear Frank's voice in my mind, and the sounds of the happy dancers.
Excellent piece of history right there thank you for sharing. Wish I was there in its heyday to experience the authentic menu and ambiance!
Wish I could go back in time and witness this and you and the band. That’s amazing and an awesome piece of history and Cleveland history. I am trying to picture it in my mind. You have a wonderful description
You might know my mom, Kathy, she was the strudel maker. She worked there for 30+ years. Best atmosphere & homemade food in Cleveland.

i hope this place does get opened up again, even if its like a Steak House or just another restaurant. as its only been vacant for 5 years, theres not that much damage. thanks for showing this explore
Unfortunately it won't because it was burnt down this summer
That place is like the Tardis, looks smaller on the inside then huge on inside! Love the murals.
I grew up dancing to polka music! My Dad played the concertina. The murals are gorgeous!
Thanks you for all your great work. It's sad to see these old buildings alone and decaying. It would be amazing to stand inside of them and imagine the voices, laughter and music that once filled them.
You're welcome man thanks for watching! Yeah its kinda sad you know?
@@URBEXHILL It is sad. I really love old places and to see them fall apart-it isn't right.
Also, you should be wearing a respirator. They look like they were actually doing Asbestos abatement. Those Tiles are actually asbestos tiles. Which is why they are being removed, and replaced with new insulation.
Glad they are remodeling it! That place is beautiful! The original ceilings, paintings, etc. This video is awesome! Can't wait to see the next exploration! Love from Youngstown!!!
Yep I'm glad too.
Thanks Heather!!
Beautifully done video. Looks like that was a pretty cool place in it's day. Thank you for enlightening us about these forgotten places around Cleveland. Looking forward to the next!!
Thank you so much ❤
Yeah this next video is good
@@URBEXHILL I'm ready bro hey did u ever get chance look into Dresden OHIO bro
@@URBEXHILL always welcome bro
When u turned to look bro 13:52 looks like a shadow on the wall to the right blue wall in back like they walked bye it
What an amazing ‘little’ family restaurant. Thank you for doing these explorations as to capture the architecture and history of these buildings.
I'm fashionably late but totally here for this!!! 30 seconds in and so excited! 🥰
😊Hey!!!! I hope you like it! I got some really cool videos coming soon
@@URBEXHILL just made it to the end! That place is HUGE! I wonder it they're turning it into a motel or apartments 🤔 It's got beautiful art and structure. I don't get why they'd leave that huge pipe leaking like that, though. Insane. And the grapes made me lol, like wtf 😂 You did amazing, editing was spot on and I'm so excited for the next!!! You're doing great!!!
@@Kim-Unearthed yeah hopefully they fix that pipe soon.
Thanks I truly appreciate that! I'll be posting the next video very soon.
@@Kim-Unearthed its really hard to tell what they're doing with this place. I wonder when the last time they've been there working was 🤔 it seemed like they just up and left in the middle of renovating it months ago
Well done. Nice to see all the old abandoned places in Cleveland. Some we know about and especially those we don't. Thanks. You are brave to stay in there even when you think someone may be in there. I love your videos!
❤ thanks you so much ❤
I'm just trying to give accurate information about each place i explore.
What you mean old country? They were born here
Gracias por tu trabajo saludos de Barcelona España 👍
Thanks for watching!!!😊
Wow, that place was a real maze. I thought it was very scary to explore. Well done as usual. :)
😊 thank you so much!
What a cool and interesting place. It is so large and the basement was spooky as hell. Great video thank you
Thanks for watching bro
I'm excited for the sanatorium 💚🌹
Went there often before it closed. Wonderful building and I pray they do not knock it down.
Quality work sir once again
Thanks I appreciate that
What is it with all the single chairs everywhere just sitting there chilling on their own
Great point
Lol right and whats with them being stacked up like that
@@URBEXHILL I no just so creepy the one in front of the window reminders of an old movie /book The Sentinel (1974) is a novel written by Jeffrey Konvitz. When I first read the book we lived in a old 1800 house made in to 4 units we had one of the top it was haunted . the original owners father mother and daughter with their servants the fathers nephew came and killed everyone except for the daughter she was out then he killed himself not the best place to read a scary book lol
Wow it's a big place 🐈 Melbourne Australia
23:20 lmaooo the chairs
Then the grapes
This was a funny one bro
This place caught fire yesterday. Sadly, it will probably be gone soon.
Damn that makes me sad! It was beautiful inside
Awesome upload 👍, the coming soon looks absolutely epic!
Thanks bro! Yeah you all will like it
I will NEVER understand why beautiful plaster work is ever covered up with hideoud ply wood, etc.
Me neither... the original ceiling looks better than the wooden one.
Lovely building and that ceiling was amazing. Thanks fella it was a cool vid.
Thanks for tuning in man!
Super 👍
👻😱🤯
Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱
So sad to see it this way today! Many good memories!
Thanks bro for the journey an history of this historical building loved the paintings an all hope it comes back to life an gets what it needs to move on too nice not to for sure god bless bro
Thanks bro!!! I hope so too 🙏
God bless you bro
@@URBEXHILL 🙏 god bless bro
That place is a maze, especially the upper floor w/the weird half-level stairs going up and down. It may seem like it was getting renovated, but I doubt it, not with the level of damage around it, especially with that foundation water damage. I tgink the uppet level was just better preserved.
It's really said to see framed pictures that were cherished memories or historical stature just be left behind or tossed on the ground. Stuff like that always really encapsulates the time before and all it's been reduced to.
It's sad it was torn down last month
@@URBEXHILL Yeah I just looked it up on google maps, they have a picture of the demo...damn...you did real good giving it a spotlight one last time.
That building has so many twist and turns! Have me on edge with at every turn! 😅 I really would like to see how it looks a year later if they’ve completed remodeling!
Loved this one. I know finding super scary abandoned places are extremely hard to find/travel to, (expenses with traveling etc..), just curious though, have you ever thought of doing exploration videos that are on places / buildings that aren't neccesarily abandoned/scary? Would it make finding places easier/more sustainable? I would honestly watch you explore anything. Pretty sure others feel the same. Keep up the great work man, shits insane what you do
Yeah I'm gonna start posting ever exploration I go on, scary or not. Thanks man
Found your channel on the impossible channel. Jayme mentioned your channel. Of course I had to have look.
Will you ever go back to the tunnels with the water? It was very creepy and those creatures were strange! Thank you for taking us along on your adventures!
Such a neat yet sad place. It's sad to see all these places that were once the "life" of Cleveland just silent & now dead. It gives a feeling of loneliness & a longing to see better prosperous times to come back to not only Cleveland but for Youngstown where I'm at as well. Btw, I don't think that place is being renovated bcuz if it was that water being shut off would be the 1st thing the new owners would have done imo. But I could be wrong.
That was a great video, looks like a great investment, great job!
Thank you so much ❤
Yeah good investment IF they fix the leaking basement pipes soon.
I love this video, thank you for sharing some history 💚🌹
You're very welcome!
I'm happy to see that it's not completely destroyed. It must have been a pretty nice place in it's time.
It was. See my comment.
Oh wow I can see why they want to renovate that place, there’s so much space on the upper floors!! It looks like a whole town up there ftw there were probably like 10 apartments being rented out up there back in the day, it’s bigger than the first floor restaurant!! Really cool, I’m sure they were nice apts back then because of the space and amount of sunlight.
Yeah but I was actually wrong, they aren't doing any renovations unfortunately. This place is completely abandoned
The paintings were beautiful and i hope the people who are renovating keep them on the walls. The structure is very sturdy and well maintained. Thank you for sharing
Excellent video! Here are my notes lol 9:44 there was a whisper, 10:05, a voice sounded like "I'm bleeding", 10:44 as you walked toward the counter it sounded like a "hi" whisper. I truly enjoy your content. Looking forward to that next video. Stay safe. :-)
Thanks! Yeah that does kinda sound like a whisper.
You'll love the next video!!
@@URBEXHILL I can’t wait! ☺️☺️☺️☺️
Thank you so much for sharing this! It's sad to see it like this. In 2003 my mom was a waitress there. The food was absolutely delicious! Sadly in November it caught fire. I drove past there today and the bulldozer is in the parking lot.
Hope you will buy one flashlight
You would never think that place is that big on the inside based on the outside. That place is freaking huge!!! And people are getting lit in there, condoms, a blunt, a cookie for the munchies and ish. Talk about being adventurous 😂😂😂
But on a serious note, I cannot wait to see the next video!! Awesome job man!!💕
Thank you so much!!!😊
Haha yea someone was in there living there best life lol.
Yo the molly stark sanatorium is haunted fr
@@URBEXHILL omg, see I’m not going to interrogate you but now I’m anxious but no spoilers 😂😂. I can’t wait to see it tho . Keep up the great work love. 💕
I drove by this everyday. This is off East 55th and Bonna Ave!!
Yeah I never thought it was abandoned
@@URBEXHILL I used to commute for work all the time and drive right past it. From the outside it looked like it was used for specific events. Never knew it was so run down in there.
As always, thanks for the cool footage. Always be safe on your trips
I've eaten there and at the old Hofbrau across the street. The owners of Goldhorn owns it. He was supposed to use it as a party center but let it go to shit.
Oh, Chris! Waiting for your newest upload and I found this one I'd missed. Huge place. Did you ever alert anyone about the water? One more thing I felt is how much more I appreciate you and your explorations. You don't feel the need to gab on and on, like some other garrulous explorers, and state the obvious. Continued thanks. 💙
Man good shit dude!
Nice job, man. Geetings from Ceará, Brazil
Thanks bro
I'm so glad I stumbled upon this video! (I subscribed and clicked the notification bell.) The video was amazing! I'm sure if it was being remodeled, they're probably either already finished or at least have gotten a lot done by now. That place was huge! I think you've just become my new favorite explorer! You know a lot of history! I love that! I'm watching Empire Computech now!
Thank you so much! I put my heart into every video and do a lot of research! Thanks 😊
@@URBEXHILL that is very clear to see. Thanks for sharing your adventures! I look forward to seeing lots more!
Love your vids 💞
Thank you!😊
Hey bro that was weird that place wasn't it, New looking stuff & yet busted up too, hey I can't wait for that next video upload 👍 this was a lot different for you for a change from those other decaying places, cheers mate 🍻
Hey bro! Thanks for watching!
Yeah nice little change up for the norm. Yeah its coming soon Thanks
Bad ass man!!🤜🏽💥🤛🏾
Thanks bro I appreciate the support
Great
The decorated tin that is covered on the ceiling costs a fortune.
Chris thanks for this one last look at a cultural icon as it is now nothing more then a hole filled with dirt. I'm so happy that you gave me this one last look around...this is a huge loss to the Slovenian and Croatian immigrants who live in that area. Its loss will be felt for many years to come as it held a huge part in many people's hearts for past memories.
thank you for another great video
lovely footage
Awesome abandoned explore video
You should explore abandoned funeral parlors, morgues and cemeteries
It's sad how a building in this good shape is left abandoned, they should use it for something
Yeah the city is poor though so we have alot of abandoned places here
So sad I went there e route to Pennsylvania, crazy huge food , every known polka musician played there . No joke
Your channel is AWESOME.
Beautiful!!! By Andrea from Italy!
You should totally buy that place and fix it up. Itd make a great club. Just sayin... thanks for the video.
I would if I had money 💰
Awesome explore!!
Thanks! More coming soon!
Your timeline is off. It was Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House as early as 1975 when my father and I first visited there. The 1977 date was - I believe - a "grand re-opening" when it was expanded from the original small establishment. "Bonna's Cafe" was the original name, BEFORE Frank Sterle bought it and reopened it as the Country House back in 1954.
Thank you so much for clarifying that for me! Quick question how did you find my video?
Great video, should the city be informed about the huge water main leak in there? Very destructive and a waste of water.
Another great video can't wait for the sanitarium one , l👀ks sp👀Ky 👻👻👻
Thanks! Yes the sanatorium video is scary!!!
Hi Chris,5 days for mark to go and then he come home.
Cool video !! I read Wiener Schnitzel?? Sounds german😇
Ohh nice! Thanks man. Yeah its slovenian
@@URBEXHILL No😇,the word *Schnitzel* is german.Or to be fair, its austrian, but that is german as well, with a dialect.Great video.I think mark will be back in 5days!!
@@sky.master oh ok I didn't know that.
Great im happy he's getting out!
Slovenes eat wienerschnitzel too.
Damn Cleveland starting to look like Detroit (abandoned) a lot of Ohio folks coming to my city in Denver becoming crowded here but thanks for the video man you are the best
Yeah man cleveland is falling apart 😪 yall got any good abandoned places in Denver ?
@@URBEXHILL aww bro there used to be ALOT abandoned places ,
Abandoned warehouses, creepy old Victorian houses but since denver became a popular place the colonizers and yuppie hipsters are buying them all and gentrifying our neighborhoods but sheesh used to be a lot, I can’t wait for your Molly stark sanitarium video 🙏🏾😭is it coming out this month or October ?
Omg soooooo excited!!!
Hey time traveler!!...How ya been?....> THUMBS UP!!
Hey!! Lol yeah your right they need to fix that soon before the building gets more problems.
Thank you for watching!
It nice. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It's so sad seeing things that were around years ago that had people in them and the way of life back then, I feel this sense of longing for the 150s to 1980s and even before the 1950s I feel such a connection. I'd love to have been born in those time periods and been young 🌱 I wonder when we die if we get to come back and choose rather to be born into a new person or if we can choose to go to any time periods we wish too and live in the moments that we want too?
The logo spray painted on the wall at 6:07 is guy Fieris Lmaoo. He puts them on restaurants that he visits in his show triple d.
Water will destroy all. I been there with my parents. I think I was 9 yo then. Now I’m 50. History.
Don't grapes turn into raisons? But take along time?
What a strange place as some parts looked worse for wear and other bits were so tidy. Don’t like those lonesome chairs dotted around the place they gave me weird vibes.
Yeah I know, I was kinda strange to see that lone chair in the freezer like that
What about the chair in front of that old TV? Creepy!!
I did produce for 20+ years, and those graoes have been there week to 2 weeks depending on the temperatures in there at the time.
Greetings from Slovenija
What was that 15:34 i heard it bro sounded like glass or sliverware
Yeah It sounded like glass or dishes in the distance
@@URBEXHILL yeah i saw you turn an look
I want to know why a random chair is in the middle of a walk in cooler 🤷🏻♂️ that’s just odd
Yeah that is kinda strange
Those raisins look more like to me dried up grapes hanging from the ceiling just saying but who actually knows here they could possibly be raisins like the gentleman said during his you tube video JJ isy saying 😁👍
THE BETTER THE PLACE MORE LIKELY SOMEONE IS IN THERE
Even abandoned buildings belong to someone...I'd be afraid of getting into trouble with the law for trespassing , there is obviously remodelling going on. You may have got permission for all we know but Urbexers have found themselves in bad situations. Take care, great channel!
No remodeling going on there
Wow 😲at the end the sanatorium is so creepy
Great video! I just wonder why someone would start a refurbishment from the top level, doesn't make any sense, expecially with a flooded basement... 🙄
Hey Chris, when will a new vid drop buddy?
Whats up bro!! In 2 days
@@URBEXHILL sweet!!!! 👍👍👍
i wonder why after all that time it failed??
I would %100 call the water board and at least report that leak , that is a huge waste of water , our country don't need to waste more than we have to
I simultaneously want to, and don't want to know why there were condoms on the floor...
I guess homeless people have s...
Nevermind 😐🤮
@@URBEXHILL I'm wondering if "professional" services are being held there often. Ewwww all the way.
Looks like it should become a microbrewery/restaurant. Still plenty of musicians to play and educate the public one polka at a time.....
This was fantastic (and very creepy🥺)!! I was worried abt you a couple times there man!!
PLEASE be SOO careful!!
You never know what kind of psycho could just come out of the dark at you with unknown intentions (God forbid😇)!
Please tell us you carry some type of protection Christopher 🙏🏼
When you were going down the stairs to that disgusting basement, it seriously freaked me out!!
I would never have been brave enough to go down there 😖😲!!
Especially ALONE!
You’re crazy !!
As great as this episode was, you wetted our appetites for the Molly Stark sanatorium now !! I am very anxiously awaiting that post for sure 👍🏼
Looks like another nail bitter 😬
PS, the “grapes (raisins now)” looked to be abt a year old… but then again, what do I know 🤷🏻♀️ total guess
Thank you so much for watching! Yes I protect myself.
Molly starks video is gonna be good.
I was thinking about a year or so
Is the building still being remodeled?
if that is being remodeled you in deep shit if caught by the owners or cops in there
Unfortunately its not being remodeled at the time I made the video I thought it was
slovenija mentioned!!!!!!
