This video is very good. The main point is that contemporary singer Tenors sound much different from a Classically trained singer. However, you can be a contemporary singer and have a high C. David phelps is a perfect example.
By the way I noticed there was a comment where you say that tenors use a "ahh note" due to their brightness in their voice. But Technically the voice should not be making Strong E or I sounds after a certain part of the voice. For the Tenor voice they normally start flipping to an Ah after G. You can take other vowls higher but it's not recommended. I'm classically trained singer for the past 2 years.

I'm not 100% sure. But from that clip, your voice sounded very free and natural in that lighter higher place. Had a great ease up there and you didn't force too much weight up there. So it sounded to me like a tenor voice, with its higher timbre. Obviously if you're singing lower songs it may be different. But that song sounded like a tenor!

Wow u just described my range perfectly, I struggle with anything below an A2 and can sing A4 okay but when I get to c5 I have to go into a mix, I have a lot to work on but this vid helped a lot.
Same here. My current highest belt is an F#4 and i do hope i can sing highs with ease just like tenors do but it really satisfies me when i hear myself ringing on notes below f#4 which is the higher part of my chest register coz i haven't learned how to mix. My headvoice tho is below average and my highest is an F#5. Lowest chest range is D2.
That’s pretty high for a baritone. I love the rich tanner and tone of the baritone. At one time, I wanted to be a baritone. However, I need to be happy as a tenor.
I m a baritone too, I used to be like you, highest I could go was F4 but with practice and learning the clean mixed voice you can reach higher, I can now comfortably belt a Bb4 and a C5 with mixed voice, dont listen to the baritone curse its not real, its all about the training
I can down G#2-A#5 and C6 on a good day in male I'm a Countertenor my tone is Bright,Smooth,Full and with husky vocal texture and very nimble Complex Riffs&Runs and Melissa.
If there are double tenor and double bass lines in a men's choir, tenor 1 would be best suited for counter tenors and tenor 2 would be for tenors. However, counter tenors are rare and due to that rarity, some tenors will share tenor 1 with counter tenors and some tenors will share tenor 2 with baritones. As long as there are double tenor and double bass lines, my voice would naturally sit in the range of that tenor 2 line, which is still lower than tenor 1. We, tenor 2 guys, will normally sound beefier than those tenor 1 guys. That is why we sing a little lower.
No, tenor ones are lyric/leggero tenors Countertenors are not a voice type it's a subclass of tenors that sing in falsetto, even baritones can sing Countertenor.
My voice starts 2nd key baritone and goes up to few notes tenor. Vocal coach said i am a high baritone. He said with training you can go lower and higher. I can sing in rough masculine chest voice that sound so manly, yet do those sharp head voices. Its like two people live inside me. Is this a baritenor?
Thank you very much for this video Please I want to know the voice type my voice can be placed in My vocal range is mostly from E2 to G#5 and on a day I can go as low as C2 I’m always comfortable in the F2 -A4 range So please can you help
I always had problems realizing what voice type I have. My vocal range is C3-D7 (I once hit a G#7 tho from a crack lol, what Im trying to say is this is my consistent vocal range) and Im most comfortable in the 4th octave. Can you help me? I can mix up to G#5 and head voice up G#6-A6. Edit: typo mistake.
Hi, tenor here, wondering if you could give explain how I can get chest power down at a G2 and comfortably hit an A-B4... Clearly with that and it not even being strained, I'm a tenor, but why can I go so low?
A G2 is a pretty common note for a lot of tenors. It may be more proficient the higher it goes. But a male voice could often get down to some form of G2. If it's full though, guess it means you just have really good muscle control and know how to keep your chords closed in your upper range and then most likely lighten and mix really well while going higher. Obviously I haven't heard your voice, but it sounds like a pretty nice wide but not abnormal tenor range!
Wrong, we do sing with our chest. It's just that it's better to use our chest sensation in the lower area of our voice. The higher we go, we still use those chest sensations, but we also let go of all the weight. While the sound feels lighter and softer in our head, in reality it's very loud and ringing.
@@markcasey2517 head voice is lighter but a tenor can still feel those vibrations in the chest area when we sing higher. The sound in the higher area feels less "full" as in the lower area as it sounds softer, lighter in our head. The actual sound produced is actually loud, however the sounds should be fluent throughout the rest of the voice, however the sensations may shift a little. A tenor still uses the "foundation" (aka "chest" voice) whether they sing up or down. There's just a slight gear shift.
@@markcasey2517 im a singer who's been classically trained. However im not a teacher. I only state from what I understand about the voice and how resonance works.
I've often even been called out for not having a very powerful voice (as a high tenor) but like you said my kind of voice isn't really designed to do it
Every tenor is unique. My tenor voice tends to be a bit heavy. I tutored a student for physics. He told me he’s a tenor. His lite tenor voice is beautiful.
Hi Sam, I have a question or two. I can sing F3-F4 comfortably however, I can’t hit notes from F#4-C#5 and when I do it’s always unintentional but I can sing D5-A5 with a lot of ease in chest. When I’m trying to hold notes in the lower 4th register I tend to go into the 5th register(for example: if im holding a D4 it turn into a D5 or if I’m holding a E4 it turns into E5).My voice is light. My first question is why can I sing in the upper range but I can’t sing notes from F#4-C#5? my second question is am I a tenor? I can even sing C6 and the highest I’ve gone consistently is G6. It would mean a lot if you would give me feedback. Thank you for this video!
Based on what you've described, you are definitely a light tenor with a falsetto extension (what voice teachers call countertenor). Your F3 to F4 is where your chest voice is comfortable, and F#4 to G4 is perhaps where your voice usually transitions into your falsetto. As a countertenor, you are going to feel most comfortable in your falsetto, and that is perhaps why your voice switches octaves when holding a note (either that or your overtones are very powerful). Below the C#5 is quite low for the falsetto which is probably why you're having some trouble with that area. What I would suggest is that you do some vocal exercises to extend your chest voice and some vocal exercises to lower your falsetto with equal volume, this will help to develop a strong mixed voice to improve chest participation in your high notes. I hope I have been helpful.
Okay so I have a genuine question… I’m a 17 years old boy and I turn 18 soon. My full out chest voice goes E3-Bb4. When I’m mixing I can go to D5. When heady mixing I can get to F#5 on a good day I get to G#5. My lowest note I am comfortably hitting is A2. I started off being more comfortable in my higher range and I still am. The highest note I can hit is A6. Would I be classified as a tenor?
Erm. I don't really know. Just the note. Like a regular piano I guess. I mean a D4 is just a D4 isn't it. Unless everything I know is totally wrong hahah?
Can someone explain... Is it not good enough to sign a high note in head voice? Is belting preferred, more sought after or just more powerful sounding ? Cause you say they can hit those, but only in head voice?
It really depends on the effect you want. It also depends on the context of your song and the moment of feeling. Music is, after all live performance art. Do you want to come off vulnerable or clingy? Or powerful, assertive and strong? If you want an example listen to Lisa Fischer, Soprano singing "How Can l Ease the Pain". The live version is stunning 🤗
I have no training but can sing from a A2 to about a G4 comfortably. After that it starts to sound strained and becomes harder for me to hit. Would I be an untrained tenor or a baritone? Some people have told me that I am a baritenor but I have gotten lot's of mixed results on this. Thanks : )
I wouldn't even focus on your voice type so early on. An untrained voice means next to nothing. When I first started singing around 6 or 7 years ago, I could hit an e2 and I couldn't even hit a D4. I thought I was a bass. Years of training has made me realise that I'm a tenor, my tessitura has changed significantly and now I can sing a C5 and struggle to hit the lower notes that I used to be able to hit. A have a deep speaking voice but my singing voice sounds very high and thin. Just look at most rock singers, their voices are often gravely and deep, yet they can belt their asses off way into tenor registers, probably because they actually are tenors or can control their voices very well. Don't pigeonhole yourself too early. It takes years of training for your voice to truly blossom and mature.
My lowest note is an F2 but when I start singing, my voice is soft and light and it can only go up to F4 in my chest voice then I have to sing in falsetto from there all the way to F5 which is my highest note. Am I a baritone?
That depends on a few more factors, like timbre, your age, your experience, whether the voice is easily produced or whether it has tensions or airiness etc. That sounds like a typical baritone register, especially given the upper extension of the falsetto.
Baritone. A tenor would be very weak below C3 and excel at F4 and above, 90% of tenors naturally reach G4 without any training, in full voice. Lyric Baritone would be my guess, especially if you're young.
Nessun Dorma is not a high C, it is a high B. Pavarotti was a light lyric tenor. Just for some perspective, in opera terms, his voice was never known for its power and size. Pavarotti did not have a particularly big voice. In opera the voice type is determined by the size of the voice. Pavarotti sounded like a choirboy next to dramatic tenors such as Mario Del Monaco and Franco Corelli. Of it is interesting to think that Steve Perry and Pavarotti have similar voice types.
My vocal range is A2-G#4. I have only been singing for a year and I'm 30. I feel comfortable singing in my mid-high range. I sing baritone for one choir and tenor for another, but I'm not sure if I'm actually a high baritone or a low tenor. I can push my upper register some, but I absolutely cannot go below an A2. Am I a baritone high baritone or an untrained tenor?
I think I’m a tenor I’m a guy I can sing quite high and sound more masculine or feminine depending how I manipulate my voice, I also can’t sing low for very long, but I can sing mid range to high much longer, and I’m able to switch falsetto or head voice easily. I’m untrained, I’m teaching myself so I might be wrong here But it sounds like I’m a tenor based off this video
this dude is totally clueless if you listen to brendon urie closely you'll notice his classical passagio is at D#4, the dude cant sing an E4 with ease...he cannot be a lyric tenor or even a low tenor when he has so much good resonance on the low notes as well.
I'm confused about my type of voice. I feel comfortable from A2 to A4 and I can reach C5 and even C#5 (it's not as easy as A4) doing a continuous scale. I don't know if I'm doing it right because I jus had 1 singing class and they told me I'm probably a baritone but we don't know yet
I don't know if I'm living in a different world or something but i don't have 4 octave tessitura like everyone in comments but i have a question :D. With a warmed up voice i can git A2 sometimes G#2 but If i would sing a note i prefer A2 lowest. But my voice breaks around G#4 so often. If i go higher okay it sound full voice but it sounds weak. Like Bb4, B4, C5. I don't sound like what i wanted. I am not sure if i am tenor or high baritone or something. For example mornings i can go as low as F2 sometimes E2 easily. Am I baritone or tenor. Is breaking around g#4 or a4 normal if I am tenor? I am 21 and singing for a year. I d like to hear your thoughts. Thanks
@@arnelflorvillarico2016 Thank you for answering, that high notes above g#4. I feel like i am improving them. I think i can sing A, A# in full voice easily. I ll keep practicing tho :).

6:40 Are you serious??? A baritone can't belt G3😅 It's not that high mannnnnn....... Well, in order to understand the difference of height(or to compare) : We can say that these notes are at the same height for these voice types and also these are very strong belts(We can also call it the chest limit and singers having good open throat technique and rock solid support can sing these notes in their chesty belting voice, though there can be exceptions 😃) : Bass : F#4 Baritone: A4 Tenor : C5 (I'm a baritone though🤟✌😃😄)

Any suggestions to improve my head voice?? (Though I've sung upto a F#6 in my head voice but now it's all gone..........) Please Help.........
Head voice is tricky, it's one of those things you need to get a good feeling of, you can either try and utilise a lighter coordination in your mix voice and carry that up, or try and stay connected as you go up, but thin out your tone, by possibly placing the sound more forward, or more in the head while maintaining a good connection. That works for me.

Informative video, Kudos for not jumpcutting the fuck out of this. Maybe try losing some of the accent though if you want to be catering also to non-native speakers. Keep up the good work!
One prime example is Logan Henderson who rarely hits low notes. He is a lyric tenor with silky falsettos and falconic belts. He has a bright high notes and agility in his voice is there. Falcon tenors would be Tegoshi Yuya and James Maslow, both have brightest timbres.
Bhaijit Amdadul E2 is my hittable note but my comfortable note is F2. Hittable Belt / chest / mixed voice - C5 Comfortable Belt is B4. Hittable falsetto note - B5 Comfortable Note - Bb5.
Using “ahh” as a default for producing quality sound? “Eee” is one of the more difficult sounds to product at this quality and there are many pieces which demonstrate this
@@NothingsR33L it's possible. If hozier was a tenor, he would be a pretty low tenor. As he does generally sing lighter. But he has quite a thick timbre up at around the G4 sort of land. they seem to be everywhere! they seem to be very common. They're the the quintessential boy-next-door voice. You know who they are. Most of the One of the Directioners, Charlie Puth, Sam Smith, Sean Mendez, Justin Bieber. My favourite tenor pop artist is hands down MIGUEL! His instrument is so beautiful from top to bottom. Manly, dark lows and a soaring, strong head voice that makes me swoooon. 😍 It helps that l can keep up with them. I can sing phrases down to A2. Some male voices are indeed Very High. I being low voiced can belt all of Bruno Mars' songs. His modal head voice goes up to around B5, just like me! extremely high tenors are called altino. Maybe singer Mar is one and possibly Bruno as well? I think Darren Hayes's voice is comparable to MJ
Jeremiah Sheppard I don't see him struggling at all. Maybe you caught him singing on a bad day? His high range is pretty good to me. F4 is a common passagio for the Tenor voice. The Tenor voice among male voices is the equivalent of the Soprano for the females: a voice that is known to soar into their respective high, BRIGHT ranges. Mendez has noted comfort for going down to Bb2 in many of his songs. That is a little bit lower than the standard C3 chest voice tenors sing, but not by much. Even female Altos can do this, so it's nothing special. His voice is not that low compared to say Troye Sivan, who has a darker baritone quality down to F2, but just as boyish!
@@arxsyn so I'm a 16 year old boy and I'm pretty sure my voice has stopped going any deeper... My tessitura is very high for a boy (around F3-F5) which I believe is the common alto range So am I an "altino" or just a high tenor ?
@@dc9067 l am a true Contralto. My chest voice technically starts at D3. For a standard Tenor it should be C3. The low mezzo E3, high Mezzo F3. Your voice is indeed very high. It could be you have a very under developed low range, or your voice is still developing or slow to develop. Give it some time. The highest vocal classification for the male voice is the natural counter tenor. For all intents and purposes, it is pretty much identical to the female Contralto voice. These two voices are quite rare. I am writing a book on the contralto voice by the way. Of course l will be writing about the very high male voices as well. I really have heard a number of high voiced males in my life. For example l heard a man with clear skin and not much facial hair whose singing voice is very Alto like, a music write up compared this singer to Adele! He's part of a music group and for the life of me, l can't remember his group or his name. ☹️ So l will have to rely on singers of the past, not the contemporary ones in my book. Perhaps the lead singer from Journey is an altino. I noticed he can belt very high in their most famous song. Little Jimmy Scott is the quintessential counter Tenor, he's often described as a Contralto, he indeed sounds like a low voiced women, with an uncanny resemblance to the great Sarah Vaughan! That velvety, rich, chocolate tone is very common one among contraltos. I count myself lucky l have this quality in my voice and l can technically sing high Tenor, my chest voice goes up to G4. For full voiced singing with power and projection, around F5 is my max in pure high register.
@@arxsyn alright, thank you so much for all these informations Your book sounds very interesting ! I do really sound like a deep voiced female, and I can replicate a more girly (soprano/mezzo) tone depending on where I place my voice But I'm scared that my vocal chords will be damaged if I try singing or even talking in a higher pitch constantly (even tho I just place my voice differently to produce a sweeter sound, so idk if it's unhealthy ?) I actually do like my voice and I don't want my tessitura to become any deeper (except for extending my vocal/supporting range) Anyway, I don't exactly know which category I fit (maybe more than one ?) but that's part of what makes my voice special lol
The thing is. I'm naturally a tenor. Then you know, puberty.. i then developed a really low bass voice hitting notes in the 1st octave. But my tenor voice still remained. Is that even possible? @@mikey002 Well, I think that you're a bass who's naturally been gifted with a nice mixed register............. Listen to David Kahn, he's also gifted like you(I suppose 😅)
what in the world is brendon urie doing featured here...it is very likely he is not a tenor. You can hear his LOW resonant speaking voice, his great low notes(sounds like frank sinatra down there yeah I know sinatras his hero but thats exactly the reason ) and the fact that he struggles to sing a G4 (like any baritone and unlike every tenor so he starts mixing a lot more there), his registration/passagio seems to be at Eb4-E4 (at the most he can't sing an E4 at low volume without mixing or using head resonance unlike a tenor who would easily sing an E4 in chest and most would speak-sing it) and he uses head/mask resonance up to F#4 (again like a high baritone/lyric baritone would)....ticks all the boxes for a baritone. This just goes to shows you how useless classification is in contemporary music, a well trained baritone with a very good mix can sometimes fool some people.
@@ZENOBlAmusic why? care to explain? How can he be a tenor if he cannot sing a simple E4 in chest voice at low volume like most tenors? There isn't a single song where he sings an E4 like a tenor but onl with head voice or mixed voice because his vocal break (passaggio) is at D#4.

Thank you!
True, us tenors tend to pop up everywhere in pop music.
I’m a bass but I sometimes wish I could sing high I recently hit my highest chest note at a F#4
I'm often jealous of basses, your highs are so thick. Honestly they sound amazing. So stick at it. That's a really impressive note with a bass voice!

You can widen your range up to the 5th octave and even more as a bass. It requires practice, but it's definitely doable.
I'm a baritone and can sing only up to F#4 but recently after much practice I can now sing up to a G4 and sometimes a G#4 (chest voice)

Thanks 🙏🙏🙏😇
If there are double tenor and double bass lines in a men's choir, tenor 1 would be best suited for counter tenors and tenor 2 would be for tenors. However, counter tenors are rare and due to that rarity, some tenors will share tenor 1 with counter tenors and some tenors will share tenor 2 with baritones. As long as there are double tenor and double bass lines, my voice would naturally sit in the range of that tenor 2 line, which is still lower than tenor 1. We, tenor 2 guys, will normally sound beefier than those tenor 1 guys. That is why we sing a little lower.
No, tenor ones are lyric/leggero tenors
Countertenors are not a voice type it's a subclass of tenors that sing in falsetto, even baritones can sing Countertenor.

“Higher chest notes”, a tenor does not sing with their chest voice under any circumstances. They sing with their “head voice”.
Wrong, we do sing with our chest. It's just that it's better to use our chest sensation in the lower area of our voice. The higher we go, we still use those chest sensations, but we also let go of all the weight. While the sound feels lighter and softer in our head, in reality it's very loud and ringing.
@@raddist7012 wrong? I would like to understand your education and experience in this area. It’s definitely not, “wrong”.
@@raddist7012 what are you basing this on? Are you a singer, a teacher, a performer?
@@markcasey2517 im a singer who's been classically trained. However im not a teacher. I only state from what I understand about the voice and how resonance works.
I've often even been called out for not having a very powerful voice (as a high tenor) but like you said my kind of voice isn't really designed to do it
Every tenor is unique. My tenor voice tends to be a bit heavy. I tutored a student for physics. He told me he’s a tenor. His lite tenor voice is beautiful.
Chest dominate? Who is a real bass or baritone and would class themselves using their “chest voice”?

Yes
Tenors are great.
I love Pavarotti!
Are you using Roland standard or Yamaha standard when you're describing specific notes?
Erm. I don't really know. Just the note. Like a regular piano I guess. I mean a D4 is just a D4 isn't it. Unless everything I know is totally wrong hahah?
You forgot Adam Lambert and Me, we're Heldentenors - he's contemporary and I'm the classical opera guy.
I can't belt a C5 but I can hit it. It's just in mix scream like. I hate that
I have no training but can sing from a A2 to about a G4 comfortably.
Sounds like you could be a lyric baritone.
May u pls explain countertenors pls😭💔
Yep, I did in the episode right after 😊
That note in Nessun Dorma is a B4 not a C5
When you say a “different style”, do you mean singing on the hard pallet?
Pavarotti is singing a B4 on nesun dorma not a C5
I have trouble with the low notes below a B2.

I think Darren Hayes's voice is comparable to MJ
arxsyn shawn mendes=baritone listen you how he struggles at F4 and above

So l will have to rely on singers of the past, not the contemporary ones in my book. For full voiced singing with power and projection, around F5 is my max in pure high register.

what in the world is brendon urie doing featured here...it is very likely he is not a tenor.
