- Spencer Kaufman from Heavy Consequence had the chance to catch up with Disturbed's David Draiman, who spoke about his friendship with the late Chester Bennington as well as the mental health and addiction issues facing the rock world and the country as a whole.

I recently saw Disturbed live at Vegas. They had a huge section about dealing with depression. It was super powerful and you can palpably feel the emotion in the audience. God bless David and I hope his message is heard.
That band got me through highschool. I was diagnosed with depression in 10th grade. It was frustrating to deal with because logically I have nothing to feel depressed about all of the time. Because of that, I felt embarrassed at times, mostly because I couldn’t turn it off, and I had to constantly think and wonder how my demeanor came off to others. I had to do that before because I also have Asperger’s and ADD, as if it wasn’t hard enough I do already. Listening to disturbed was encouraging and me made be accept what my reality was. Thank you 🙏 Disturbed.

The last song my brother begged me to listen to was Sound of Silence, S&G, but sung by Disturbed. My brother died alone with his demons of drug addiction and depression this past April of 2021. I thought," a heavy metal band?" I listened to the 🎶 music and found such solace in knowing my brother had great vision and ears in one of the best cover songs ever played by any band and it's lead singer David Draiman. It brought me to tears and I played this song at his funeral. I miss him with all my heart and only pray someone will be saved by addiction and depression because the isolation and loneliness was unbearable for him. He tried so hard to fight the battle and lost. I am now a fan of this group because of my brother's introduction. I am 68 he was 63. Miss you bro.💔 Sis

David, you're 💯 spot on. It took my brother in law. He was a firefighter/paramedic. He was my brother in law and brother firefighter. He saw things no one should have to. We have GOT to get better about this. Thank you for your advocacy, David. I appreciate your work

Disturbed, Linkin Park, and Three days got me through an abusive childhood and helped me fight my mental illnesses.
Disturbed is and always will be my favorite band because David, Dan, etc. Care about people and the many lives they come into contact with.
D FABLE Disturbed helped me get through rough phases in my life. It helped me get through when I found out my ex girlfriend cheated on me, and helped me get through being humiliated every day by someone I hated
David seems a very humble man despite being in one of the greatest bands of all time.

Thank you David, my son Zachary died from a heroin overdose on December 24th, 2014. He was 24.
That really sucks, my condolences to you and your family. I lost my father when I was 14, it hurts, but I will still never know what its like to lose a child of my own

the problem is you can only do so much, they have to want to stop themselves, you can give them countless interventions, unless they are willing to take action themselves, as long you've made your views clear, at the end of the day, its up to them to fix it despite David saying "drag them kicking and screaming" my dad is an alcoholic, i've given him a fair few interventions which has brought me to tears, its a miracle he alive today but he's reached the point where he doesn't care who his drinking effects he just does what he wants

I grew up with a father with an addiction to Percocet and Oxycodone... it is an addiction that never ended and he eventually wound up in assisted living where they feed his addiction daily. As for me, I am taking Oxycodone now for chronic pain of my own after surgery for a compressed spinal cord in my neck. I try hard to not let myself get hooked to this drug, even with as much as I need it. Add in that I am a man that lives with bipolar and have since I was 12 years old, I deal with schizophrenia and have since I was 5 years old. It is brutal and hard... but I am a fighter and I keep my head up. Listening to David talk and reading things he has said only boosts my morale and respect for him. Chest and Chris are both major losses to the music venue and to the fans who love them. I spent a month in a Crisis unit and mental ward after I nearly committed suicide myself... and this Thanksgiving made 14 years since I was released from the mental ward and on Lamictal. It is a medicine that has been a Godsend and I still take it.
I had the opportunity to hear Disturbed talk about this live. I love that they’re working hard to get people to speak out. Thank you David. It’s time that we stop hiding everything and waiting to help. We need to reach out and help anyone that needs it 🖤
disturbed and linkin park saved my life i was ready to commit suicide when a friend introduced me to their music. it is devastating what happened to Chester it will never be the same now that he is gone.
Thats something I love about the genre and community, they help setting words to feelings you cant yourself and you got people struggling with the same being there for you, even if its strangers

This means so much to me. Unfortunately i could not show my uncle the light and he died from his drug addiction. I feel like i could've done more for him. Addiction is a serious problem and we as people need to come together to find a solution

Nothing you could've done for your uncle. You did what you could. He made his choice, and that's not your fault. I'm sure you're a good man and you would fight your way through hell if you could. But you did what you could. And that's all you can do.
Please, don't feel like you didn't do enough. I'm a heroin addict, have been for about 30 years now. I've had people who love me do everything they can to try and help me get clean. But without me doing the hard work, all their efforts are in vain. Loving an addict is hard, losing them is harder. But don't put it on yourself. I know my habit will likely kill me one day, I just hope it's after my folks are gone. No one should have to bury their only son. But thank you for trying to help, we see it and appreciate it.
Wow. I've never listened to Disturbed and never realized how strongly they advocate for mental health and suicide prevention. I don't listen to a whole lot of heavy stuff but I do love LP, so I think it's time I give this band a listen!
I'm a huge Disturbed fan, but I can tell you that the last time I saw them in concert, they blew me away. His sincerity and love is beyond measure. That band is amazing. He is amazing.

We have a drug epedimic period! Meth, Cocaine, China Fentanyl w/heroin, PCP, K2 list goes on...Chester really did good in his recovery. I'm a recovering addict 10yr 9mo clean & it's hard many days 🤟 add mental health illness it's a beast!! Rip Chester B., Layne, Cornell & all the fallen.
When Chester passed away, he had gotten out of rehab 6 months prior. He had relapsed and drank the night he passed away

I was prescribed oxycodone for a spinal condition injury and ended up on a high dose and my world went spiralling into a black hole before I knew I was a full blown functioning addict. Depression then took over me and it's not a nice life believe me. God rest him
Thank you so much for doing this videos, you are so right about it being demons. It’s not just Chester but everyone who battles mental health too many crap out their hurting us and we need to fight back . Love you and I think we need to remember to love one another through shit times. ❤️

This song looks like a cry after Chester died. Though I always felt as if it was a song to refer to when depressed but after Chester it took another turn. David basically says the same thing, we should help these people out, to stop the funerals.

Although it doesnt look like it, gotta remember David was a needle shooter, you can barely see the marks still but they're there, my sister is sober after years with drug addiction and she made it with support from me and my mom and dad, I struggle with depression episodes, what helps is talking through it, never be aftaid to ask for help, never be afraid to talk, its worth doing it, trust me ❤ take care of eachother

@Razgriz85 that was Mike who said that about Chester's hair. Chester was changing his hair color quite often. Chester even had his hair pink at one point.

Many of you are Chester's fans, but I can't let any of you follow his example and believe that suicide is an option because you liked him or his music. We must learn to forget the past guys, and leave our pain in the past where it belongs. Otherwise wind up letting passed experiences of pain continue to hurt you today like poor Chester did. If you are depressed, reach out to someone dammit, and get a different perspective to help you get out of your own head for a change. THE PAST IS DEAD, THE FUTURE IS JUST A DREAM. LIVE IN THE MOMENT!!
Stay strong everyone. We’re all here to look out for each other. We all need each other, we cant be self made, just cant. We can’t do everything on our own. It’s impossible, we physically cant do everything ourselves. If we all stick together, we’ll all get through the storm and defeat the demons that lurk in our thoughts. Interesting, from my viewpoint of being a survivor of an all night clergy gang rape. And an advocate for literally hundreds of thousands of us raped by Christian clergy from ALL denominations.

My introduction to music outside of my parents' country obsession (garth brooks is still a god) was playing video games like half-life while playing hybrid theory and the sickness on loop. As someone who has dealt with suicidal depression, panic attack anxiety, and in an attempt to self medicate, lots of drug addiction.... I feel no sympathy for these famous people who have taken the cowardly option. I don't care how you feel, there's always 1 person who needs you to hang in there. For famous people it's millions. Boo hoo Chester offed himself. The important fact is he was a role model. Any statistics on how many kids followed his lead? You know it's prolly in the 1000s. I'm sorry but ya'll aren't normal people. Millions look to you for direction. If you've been telling their story for decades then hang yourself.... what do you think is gonna happen?! Suicide is the most selfish act anyone can commit.

Well isn’t we’ll know that 50% of men who are long term opioids for pain. These men will have their testosterone devastated by opiates. I was at breaking point till i gave my doctor sought me out otherwise I’ll take my like in 6 months. Funny how that kick up the ass got things moving. It’s still not great but slightly better. If you’re on long term opioids for pain get your testosterone levels checked it could just save your like. But unfortunately on 5% of men return to normal sexual function. Unlikely I wasn’t one of those men. But please please get checked it could make the world of ditto your life. ❤
