- This is another quick guide type video where I look and dissect the Orthodox faith and why its so popular. I am using an example from one of the most competitive EU4 Multiplayer lobbies where we see that the Orthodox faith is dominant in Europe (even Great Britain is Orthodox).
The main two reasons we discuss is manpower modifiers from patriarchy and dev cost reduction modifiers that often get stacked by competitive MP players. Obviously the best way to build a nation differs whether you are playing single player or multiplayer. Let me know if there was something that I missed.

Orthodox is one of the main reasons why Russia is Top Tier.
By itself Russia has very powerful ideas, strong missions and downright Busted Govt. (the Tzardom). Combine that with Orthodox, objectively the best religion in the game and you have an absolute behemoth.
A good Russia player can take on Early-Midgame Ottomans by themselves in MP- something only a few countries like France or the Mughals are capable of.
Also Russia has some of the best multiplayer ideas. It gets direct bonuses to forcelimit and manpower which are the strongest military bonuses for multiplayer and some smaller bonuses to morale and so on. It has special units that don't cost manpower and are a bit stronger than regular regiments and they are not tied to age bonuses like the Spanish, French and Prussian unit bonuses. Plus the ability to get uncontested cheap land in Siberia for a miniscule amount of diplo points is so valuable, no other nation in MP has the benefit of free real estate and you can choose if you keep cancelling to get a bunch of gold mines or if you are content with effortless trade company land.
I find russia EArly game horrific tho-Seems to get fucked by institutions
@@blafoon93 Yeah. I was in an MP lobby where Russia had 12 goldmines in Siberia alone. He went for economic ideas early for stacking dev cost so inflation wasn't an issue either.
It was legit terrifying.
@@edim108 yep, that sounds about right. I personally hate cancelling colonies but in MP it really is the best thing to do...
I wish provinces had secondary trade goods, so a Siberian province could for example have furs and gold and you'd get a production value for 70% furs as primary and 30% gold as secondary trade good. The trade good province bonus could then be different depending on the combination of goods and you could make it so that this never changes after it has been assigned to a province via colonization, so the only ways of changing it would be via events, missions or decisions. Also there are simply not enough trade goods, things like silver, pearls, maize, horses and many more really should be implemented. All of this could also tie into an overhaul of the building, trade and development systems that would allow for taller playstyles.
@@blafoon93 even if they don’t do most of that, they really should fix the colony cancelling thing.
The 0.5% PA makes it so you can sustainably have an icon since icons expire every 20 years and cost 10 PA. Never forget to take it.

@@TheDarkRobloxian Clergy privilege. I'm pretty sure now they nerfed it to something like 0.1% PA which makes it useless.

The only problem with orthodoxy is that there are so few orthodox countries. Out of the countries that are orthodox, the only ones that aren't a struggle to play are Muscovy and maybe Novgorod.
that's why in MP lobbies, people are buying orthodox faith off of each other, like in this lobby.

@@AbsoluteHabibi Instead of making a DLC all about Russia, they should've just made a DLC that does the same things as Third Rome in terms of the religion, but gives more flavor and viability to all orthodox nations. This way you wouldn't have to buy an expansion centered entirely on one country in order to give orthodox nations some flavor. Plus, if they did it that way more people would actually buy the DLC. But hey its Paradox, who am I to question the mighty ones.

Edit Ive done orthodox hungary before and it took a while to get even 150k manpower.
Not true, Hungary, Poland and Lithuania start at catholic but can easily convert at the start of the game, in fact i'm still waiting for a game where Hungary or Lithuania stay catholic.
I honestly find ibadi and Shia rather underrated. They too get manpower+Dev reduction with schools(among other stuff) and generally the events are extremely good. Not to mention the additional Muslim events that often pop up that give -dev cost etc. Maybe not "better" than orthodox but strong alternative and maybe cheaper to buy.
They also get the dhimmi estate which is pretty good
@@wimmer3324 yeah I forgot about it. it's additional tolerance + tech cost reduction. It easily stays above 60% that plus + legalism is an additional 0-20% tech cost reduction. More admins you can have for provinces
Certainly strong religions but at least for single player way weaker because you have no way of getting PUs. However with Council of Trent getting PUs as an Ortho-Bro has become actually difficult because everyone that chooses a harsh stance will have a permanent -80 opinion modifier.... makes fishing for PUs nearly impossible with those nations.

they also take forever to integrate/inherit. a vassal gives u ducats + often u can use reconquest CB.
Crusader kings devs do not seem to share the same love for orthodoxy unfortunately
Yeah you want to reform or convert to a religion with great holy wars ASAP if you want to expand as quickly as possible.

@@apostolosgoulas2009 It is really fast if you do it the boring way and start as Byzantines and still quite fast if you start as a vassal and claim throne but yeah taking Italy is just a boring series of wars against Christians so it is slow also.
@@silverdeathgamer2907 the wars are not the problem. My issue is building barronies for random a Italian dukes 3rd cousin because he has a strong claim on Tuscany but then he dies when I am at 97% warscore so fuck me I guess

I would be very interested to see a video on the strategy behind multiplayer-meta and what a proto-typical MP playthrough looks like. Not a run-down of cheap tactics (e.g. don't reinforce too fast, parachuting exploit), many YT's have done this, but an interesting take on the strategic elements of current MP meta. a good basic is to pick scaling nations such as Poland-Ruthenia, Russia,France,Prussia and have the least ammount of player wars possible, if u cant expand anywhere doesnt matter... just dev... go by the rule dont start wars unless you 100% win.. if u play well u can dev faster than u can make ur gov. capacity grow

By the 1600s, if you have done things right you can develop provinces for like 5 monarch points. This does not only apply to Orthodox though, you can also stack if you are Protestant or Anglican

devving Mil also increase FL which is also really good. other reasons why orthodox is good is how stable it is, because you get a lot of missionary strength and unrest and military modifier (discipline) which is good

Damn this video make me question my single player play style when I see the Spanish manpower vs others...A bad habit I have is that I don’t upgrade advisors because I felt devving is unnecessary in a wide game, and as long as I have ideas and techs in progress it does not matter. Then I see this Spain having 1 sixth of manpower of Ruthenia...Maybe deving your primary culture to 25 dev provinces does help with power base a lot.
I love that as you go from west to east this map gets progressively weirder and weirder

Ive never played Orthodox despite my 4k hours, so was gonna do that in my current Venice to Dalmatia to spice islands game- However, given that Im a merchant republic I can't consecrate or have clergy privilege so I won't be able to get enough PA (I have like 3 states with enough dev). So I think Im gonna have to go reformation instead, right?

I love how I have 12/16 dlcs and yet miss the icons for the orthodox faith and edicts mechanic.

Can you make a video (or write a comment) explaining how to boost dev to get the massive amounts of manpower and money? I'm always running out of those in my singleplayer campaign. Russia has 650k manpower in just 1560, and if I understood how to do that in my games I would be a much better player.

Legalism gives manpower and tech cost. Mysticism gives morale and fort defence so legalism is usually the way to go

Yup, I knew it. It was powerful, too back then in CK2. Even after my HRE converted to Sunni(simply because Pope miscommunicated me 3 times in a row) and I conquered entire Europe and wipe off Byzantine, Catholic only left with 10 moral authority meanwhile Orthodox still going strong.

How can they afford deving up provinces, techs and tech ideas? If i focus one over the other, I get left behind. I’m not new to EU4 but in deff not as experienced as these people, therefore i’d gladly listen to any advice.
They stockpile points. So don’t take tech unless you get innovationess from it or you are losing innovationess, unless you are in a war or about to be in a war (you always wanted the latest military tech in that case). Many players will take a tech with additionally 30-90% cost, which is just inefficient. It’s always good practice to have your innovationess ticking up as well. Then they also don’t dev until they have all the modifiers. Additionally, knowing when to disinherit heirs helps too.

Polish ideas give bonus' to production and manpower, so that might be the reason why Ruthenia chose to dev those two instead of admin.

What about ibadi hanbali school? It gives you goods produced modifier and chance of new heir (which means that u get new heir more often can disinherit ones that are not too good more often and eventually get better rulers) in addiction u can farm legalism very quickly by declaring wars on heretics and heathens which are nearly all the countries in the world safe u since ibadi is a very rare faith. Hanbali school gives aggressive expansion impact minus 10 which means u can conquer more land without threat of a coalition. Let alone dhimmis that reduce tech cost and give u religious unity as well as increased amount of manpower in non muslim provinces. And on top of that u get feudal theocracy gov type which is one of the best.

I can see why Orthodox would be strong in multiplayer lobbies but I think nowadays Catholic might be the strongest religion. 15% tax 1yearly prestige, 1 yearly legit, 0.05% inflation and 0.5 interest, 1 diplo rep . Free stability you can get 5% dev reduction from curia wich 90% of the times the pope picks it, in reformation era yoyou get the council of trent benefits and you also get 2 free missionaries and more conversion power embracing counter-reformation and finally free mercantilism. Catholic works also best when you are a colonial empire because you can convert your subjects provinces for that sweet unlimited papal influence.
It’s the best in single player for the easiest one faith. I think my first one faith will be with a Catholic nation for sure
You forgot to mention the prestige bonus gives you 10% morale of armies and also the 15% manpower modifier with -5% army maintenance. And you can get all this modifiers and the others at the same time unlike orthodox. If you are cueria controller you also get a lot of op bonuses like -20% agressive expansion reduction.
