    Game Review & Impressions
    ---------------------------------------------------
Released in 1989, Caliber .50 is a run-and-gun shooter, viewed from a three-quarter top-down perspective. It looks and feels very much like Capcom's Mercs, which was a successor to Capcom's own Commando.
Unlike those games, Caliber .50 opts for an unconventional control scheme in an attempt to mix things up. Instead of moving and aiming with the regular 8-way joystick most cabinets used, Seta equipped the Caliber .50 unit with a rotary dial that controls your characters aim through 360 degrees. Enemies will assault you from all possible angles, so success revolves around -- pun intended -- getting used to this unconventional control method and blasting the bad guys before they overwhelm you.
Rather than simply collecting guns, new weapons are earned by collecting tokens which increase your player's health. Maxing out the health/armour bar will cause you to rank up, which causes your primary weapon to change. The starting rifle will magically change to a powerful bazooka, whilst the top tier bestows upon you a devastating flamethrower, perfect for all your charbroiling needs. There's also an assortment of grenades which you can lob, but the short range limits their effectiveness, and you'll usually be too busy fiddling with the controls to use them much.
Caliber .50 presents me with something of dilemma. On the one hand, it's a great-looking arcade blaster, chock full of explosions and plenty of action, but on the other, it's way, WAY too difficult. This would have been a tough game with a standard 8-way joystick, but the onslaught of opponents and projectiles you'll face, coupled with the finicky controls, turns this into one of the most brutally difficult coin-op experiences your likely to face.

So many good memories - I used to play this at Time Zone in Fortitude Valley back in 1990 when I was seven years old. I still remember Dad watching me get slaughtered and yelling "THAT'S BULLSHIT" then giving me another 40c to go play another game because he didn't think this one was fair, lol.😆

So he gets shot down, they take him to a prison camp down the road from the crash site and his allies wait 20 years to mount a half assed rescue? When that guy gets home they better have one sloppy apology prepared.

Caliber .50 is an overhead run-&-gun shooter that plays a lot like a hybrid of Rambo, Front Line, Heavy Barrel and Ikari Warriors. Awesome! 😊 Also, hats off to AL82.

I spent probably 40 percent of my allowance on this game in the arcade as a kid.
... and I've never seen past like the first minute of this. Guess I sucked pretty bad.
Was worth it to see the intro every time though

I see you and I have shared the same experiences of this game as children, lol.
I ended up playing through it as an adult with the Mame emulator and thinking "Man, that game was kind of bullshit, no wonder Dad didn't want me playing it".

Wow, this was made in 1989?! The control scheme you describe is something I believe SNK used for... maybe it was _Ikari Warriors_ ? I'd have to double-check again on the _40th Anniversary Collection_ . Color me impressed!

Ikari Warriors and Midnight Resistance used a similar rotary controller. I don't think emulation does much for the experience - I had keys mapped for rotating clockwise and counterclockwise.

@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Konami had also planned to use a similar rotary controller system in the arcade game Jackal, but dropped the idea at the last minute.

The rotary controller was something that you really didn't see all that often back in the day which is a shame because it really works well - I can see a new indie game doing really well if someone utilized that same scheme today because often time, the limitations you put on a game can be what makes it really fun to play.
Also, yes, the graphics were friggin' astounding, it was one of the things that made me absolutely obsessed with video games as a little kid and that's saying nothing of the music. I used to hum the tunes from this game and it would bug the crap out of my friends at school, lol.

Vet Grandpa: *gets a far-away look in their eyes* I had to kill three giant, skull throwin' apes with nothin' but a flamethrower.

Thanks for the longplay AL It looks cool and a lot better than the Genesis version but I rather prefer Mercs over this one tbh
