Yes sponsored display campaigns on ASIN's that are ranking for the keywords you are ranking for do affect ranking, through not as strongly as top of search Sponsored Product ads
We use single keyword, exact match sponsored products campaigns for rank. This way you can tightly control the placements and target more top of search, leading to better ranking improvements.
