  • As common as it is to see WM collecting trash manually in, say, Florida, it is a rare sight here in California. Carlsbad is one of the last cities where completely manual collection is still going strong, with two-stream recycling in crates, and trash as well as greens in customer-provided cans. The truck you'll see here is the main kind that collects in the city of Carlsbad, just up the coast from San Diego. A split version of this same truck would be doing the recycling, and another front loader on a Volvo chassis (most commonly) is what does the yard waste.
This was filmed right after Christmas of 2009, the same day that I caught the Heil POD on video actually. You'll notice quite a lot of cardboard being taken with the trash here, I'm sure it can be argued that that doesn't resemble WM's policy of "Think Green" so well. It might be that they only do that around Christmas when people stuff cardboard boxes with all their trash and set that out...Comment on the video please! I worked hard for this and wasted too much of my time editing it as well! Hope you enjoy it though!

One thing I LOVE about manual collection is they take whatever you have out!
Unlike with the automated trucks some drivers are just picky picky and wont take the ASL compatible non city cart with a CLEARLY VISIBLE sticker that states the contents in the cart. That kinda sucks how they have to check the can to see whats inside.
    Verry nice rare footage.
    Well shot and edited too!

very nice! Im quite surprised that WM doesnt have labels available to residents to identify the yardwaste bins from the trash ones. great video!

Awesome, manual collection FTW! Always nice to see front loader footage too, it seems not many companies use front loaders for manual residential collection. I like how most cities in Califg0onria that still have manual collection use the upside down lid method.

At least you weren't throwing stuff into the truck. We sure wouldn't want him to get in trouble, would we? :) Great footage here. Damn all this automation stuff it gets boring after a while. Feels great to see something different from WM of SoCal.

Wow, this video was amazing. I'm not a big fan of manual collection, especially with FLs, but when the video ended it felt like it only had been 2 minutes. It also feels weird to know that there's *manual* collection only about 1 1/2- 2 hours away from me. Will they ever go automated, or if they don't, and if they replace some of their FLs like this one, what kind of trucks will they replace the with? Again, this video was amazing. Can't wait for part 2! Like and fav!

Great footage! As for Manual vs. Automated collection, it's ALL about the almighty dollar. Plain and simple, automated collection in areas like this costs a lot less than manual. Automated trucks get more work done faster and with lot less labor. The company might save more on Worker's Comp insurance as well as vehicle insurance. I however would like to see the whole country go back to manual collection, get people REALLY working again, and create more jobs, plus it's a lot more fun to watch!

A lot of companies used to take cardboard on recycle day also until they would get fined

Got any footage of recycling from back in the manual days Scott? Can't believe it's already been three years since automation!

yeah I have a little but if you're talking about WM in north SD county, it's just from Oceanside. In the first video I have of one of their Labrie PODs there are a couple clips of that.
But Rancho Santa Fe still has manual everything! Routes are tough, though..

They've gone automated in Carlsbad now haven't they? Could swear I've seen pictures of some new WM ASLs on Flickr, unless those are more Oceanside trucks I'm thinking of. FLs doing cans, bags and everything... quite the close to dead breed of collection these days methinks. Something different how he takes off while pulling it out after 2:25, usually drivers sit stationary that I've seen. Would be cool if the action was faster, need the ESD crew doing this lol

really I never knew that Carlsbad was still using manual. I knew they had WM but not manual. Sorry but to me manual looks unproffetional but nice video!
