"On 14 July, the New Zealand 2nd Infantry attacked two under-strength Italian divisions (the Brescia and Pavia) on western Ruweisat Ridge, but without tanks they could not remove the Italians, and were eventually driven back by the arriving 15th Panzer Division. At Deir un Khawaber, New Zealand infantry supported by Bren Gun Carriers penetrated the 8th Bersaglieri Regiment's defenses before being driven off by Italian tanks. On 21 July, Italian infantry still occupied the western spur of Ruweisat Ridge. Two Allied infantry divisions, supported by a British armored division attempted to push them off, but counter-attacking Italian infantry and tanks sent New Zealand troops back to their own lines. A second attack the next day was aborted by Italian artillery fire-but an Italian counterattack was similarly dispersed by New Zealand artillery. British tanks supported the New Zealanders, but withdrew after losing several tanks to Italian fire. By nightfall of 22 July, the New Zealand infantry broke contact with the Italians, and left them in possession of the western spur of Ruweisat Ridge." "While the attacking brigades had been able to cut large gaps through the defences held y the Italian infantry, they had not been able to subdue all the resistance. Not surprisingly, most of the smaller outposts and defended localities had fallen easily but some of the larger posts had been bypassed during the night. The outposts which remained contained substantial number of anti-tank guns, machine guns and infantry. When daylight came, these posts were able to cover the area south of the ridge by fire and shot up any trucks foolhardy enough to drive forward." "On the right, Indian 5th Division (XXX Corps) attacked Point 64 on the centre of the feature, the New Zealand Division (XIII Corps) was on the left attacking Point 63 at the western end of the ridge and the 1st Armoured Division gave support along the line of the inter-corps boundary. The night attack was preceded by Albacore aircraft dropping flares and fighter-bombers strafing the enemy lines. At first both divisions made good progress as they fought their way through the Italian Brescia and Pavia Divisions who were holding the ridge. The advance slowed down when they met extensive minefields and there was some loss of cohesion when the New Zealanders were attacked by tanks from 8th Panzer Regiment of 15th Panzer Division and lost 350 prisoners." “The fighting which assumed particular tenacity has ended in favour of the Axis. The enemy has been everywhere repelled with counter-attacks and has sustained grave losses in men and materiel. Eight hundred prisoners, mainly New Zealanders, and Indians have fallen into our hands and 130 tanks were destroyed on the field. Rommel liked the Italian soldiers but not the Italian system or equipment. This is what Rommel said about Italian soldiers he fought with:

not the fault of the Italian soldier. The Italian was willing, unselfish and a good comrade, and, considering the conditions under which he served, had always given far better than the average. There is no doubt that the achievement of every Italian unit, especially of the motorised forces, far surpassed anything that the Italian Army had done for a hundred years. Many Italian generals and officers won our admiration both as men and soldiers.
The cause of the Italian defeat had its roots in the whole Italian military and state system, in their poor armament and in the general lack of interest in the war shown by many of the leading Italians, both
officers and statesmen. ...
In general terms, the defects which existed in the Italian armed forces arose from the following causes: The Italian command was, for the most part, not equal to the task of carrying on war in the desert, where the requirement was lightning decision followed by immediate action. The training of the Italian
infantryman fell far short of the standard required by modern warfare.
His equipment was so utterly bad, that for that reason alone, he was unable to stand his ground without German help. Perhaps the best example of the inferior quality of the Italian armament-apart from the
grave technical defects of their tanks, with their short-range guns and under-powered engines-was to be found in the artillery, with its low mobility and short range. Their supply of anti-tank weapons was totally
inadequate. Rations were so bad that the Italian soldier frequently had to ask his German comrade for food. Particularly harmful was the all- pervading differentiation between officer and man. While the men had to make shift without field-kitchens, the officers, or many of them, refused adamantly to forgo their several course meals. Many officers, again, considered it unnecessary to put in an appearance during battle and thus set the men an example.

I am Italian .... and I am proud of what our army has done in Africa ...... it has endured for more than two months in these conditions which the film documents very well ...... surely if the English gentlemen had been in our logistical situation we would have won ........ I don't say much ..... but already if they hadn't had the tanks ..... our soldiers would have slaughtered them all one by one

@@montycasper4300 if you had not understood it, the Italian soldiers except for some regiments did not really believe in the figure of the Duce .... we Italians were not ready for this war and above all we had no reason to fight. we were practically forced to go to war otherwise Germany would have invaded us in a few months. we Italian people did not want war, we were practically forced to wage it. mine was just an eulogy to the Italian army ... which did not firmly believe in this war and yet managed to resist for months on this front ... without escorts ... against a much better equipped British army

Yea my uncle died in this battle the truth was their was no British armour they stayed back at camp in their bunks.the plan was for the NZ,s to clear a path and the armour to follow the armour never arrived.the new Zealanders fought their way back to the surprise of the British .The NZ commander found the British tank commander asleep in his bunk and woke him up with the toe of his boot.
@sr_ jed All I will say is its not the first time it happened. You could say it was a strategic decision not to risk British Armour.
As far as the nzers were concerned it was the English not doing what they said they would do. Depends on perspective .
A lot of commonwealth forces died during ww2 because of the english not wanting to risk their military assets.

These soldiers were the best what italian army got, in ww2. Pitty was why Italy did not use them later, in a conflict. I mean in 1943 and 1944.

The New Zealand 2nd Division would make it all the way up to Faenza and Trieste. Casualty rate was over 60% by the end.

Actually, the 2nd NZ Division helped defeat Italian and German forces in North Africa and took part in the invasion and defeat of the same in Italy.

Actually, captured German officer's in Tunisia referred to Americans when being interrogated British personel as "your Italians".

My Great Grandfather was captured and made a POW on Ruweisat Ridge during the First Battle of El Alamein. But it was the Germans who captured them, not Italians.
Was he shipped to a German POW camp then as expected if captured by a German unit?

The history books show that the Pavia & Brescia divisions were effectively gutted at Tel el Eisa & Ruweisat, and it was only the German armour that saved what was left. My father was in the 20th Battalion 2NZEF, and was made a PoW there...by German armour. This film appears to be like so many others - a not-so-subtle re-write of history. The pity is that so many believe a film rather than find out a little more about the real story - this one appears to be a modern Braveheart - full of stirring actions but very thin on reality
Seems like you have to study your story better. The 20th battalion 2NZEF fought in the 1st battle of El Alamein and was enircled by 15th panzer division on july '42.
They never fought in the 2nd battle of El Alamein because they were being reorganised.
Brescia and Pavia weren't saved by german armour because the panzer divisions were routed at the beginning of the battle and left italian divisions back.
They tried resisting but were swept by british attack and tried retreating by foot to Fuka were other axis units were. The survivors were encircled and had to surrender on NOVEMBER 7th '42.

These “chikens”, our grandfathers, resisted on the ridge, defeated the brave enemy soldiers and covered the flight of the others, even the germans armed with panzers and heavvy guns that left them there.....Pavia division estinguished in that battle, as no live or free man survived...these chikens were Italians prouds to be there as italian soldiers....please give them respect as we give respect to all the fallen soldiers.
