Oh I remember a very similar experience I had while scavenging. Came across a house that was hit pretty hard in the middle. One side was empty, but with stuff, but the other side had people living in it. 2 very frightened people, and one with a gun. I tried to go through to the side of the house that wasn't getting used, but that meant that I had to make it past the armed resident. There was a tunnel underneath which would let me through but I'd have to bring a saw. So I came back the next night with one. But even while underground, I was still found. The gun bearing Civilian rushed down to get me. I tried to hide but she found me anyways.
I beat her to death with my shovel.
I thought, hey that was good, it may not have been the desired outcome, as I had wanted to sneak past, but now there is no more danger in this place. So I continued looting and exploring the now dangerless part of the building. Of course I couldn't take everything at once so I came back the next day to get some more stuff. And why wouldn't I? That house had plenty of good things available for me, so I didn't think twice about it. However, just as I was leaving, I made some noises and the other 2 people heard, but not discovered me. However, they spoke with each other. And you could just imagine and almost feel the horror of them exchanging words like "Oh no, I heard something" and "Do you think he's back?"
And that's when I realized. I became like some sort of boogeyman for them. And I could see why. I came in, and beat one of them to death and stole emptied the other side of the house.
When I came back to the home base, as I was cooking and crafting some stuff, the question "Did that woman really have to die?" pounded on my consciousness harder and harder. I never went to that house again.

I remember playing this game when I was 15. I still remember when I made it to the end of the war - I put my head down on my desk and felt like a monster. I made it out, but at what cost? This game messed me up and I was depressed for days afterwards, but it gave me new perspectives on life, war, desperation, etcetc. After everything through, I felt like I came out a better, more compassionate person in the end. I've had similar experience. When i've played it my scavenger came to some house that turned out to be inhabited by an elderly couple and their grown up son. He told me not to come, i tried to scavenge garbage in outer room but got in restricted area. He attacked my scavenger, i tried to run away but got in dead end and she was beaten to death by him. Being furious I decided to go and avenge her by murdering that man. When I sent another survivor to this house I started wondering - he was taking care of his parents and protecting them, they have nothing to do with it and they need him. But in some other fights enemies surrendered when seriously hurt and I decided to be merciful and just hurt that man badly until he surrenders. But he did not and kept attacking my survivor so I had to finish him off. To make matters worse his parents came down and started mourning him, screaming stuff like: "Alexei, no!".
That shit got me depressed for 2 days. My act of vengeance which i deemed to be fine because I wasn't going to murder anyone got out of hand and hurt wrong people.

This game is highly inspired by the situation in Sarajevo during the siege. Both the game as a whole, and certain details.
The grafitti that says "SNIPER", for instance, existed in the same manner in Sarajevo.
Knowing people who fled that war made my experience playing the game even darker.
Atmosphere: 10/10: one of the best ever, all categories.Music, backgrounds, lighting: it's all there.
Gameplay: 4/10: Controls are somewhat clunky. Micromanagement is tedious at times. Combat sucks. Good system for upgrading your home.

I’m serious, something is oddly fulfilling about getting that one-tap with an scoped assault rifle or backstab with a knife.
Though the combat could be a bit more difficult, it’s very easy if you know what you’re doing.
But still, trust me, hearing the soldiers or bandit say ‘Alexei, No!’ is damn depressing seconds before I stab their neck, Moonshine + some guitar can easily get my survivors over the ‘sad’ state but it surely stays with me as the player.

Instead I got to watch the guilt eat up the character that came to the realization with me as I tried to get their motivation up with different in-game luxuries like the guitar, cigars, coffee, radio, r&r, etc. None of it worked, he ended up committing suicide and I almost fucking cried because of how powerless I felt. Yeah i don't play games that are like that for reasons. I want to enjoy myself playing the game, not have a moral dilemma. I've deployed to Afghanistan as a soldier and before i deployed, i witnessed the aftermath of my brother attempting suicide. I could've been shipped to the depths of Hell itself but nothing was as traumatizing for me as seeing him tired to a hospital bed with life support. Every year from the beginning of September until the end of October my mind goes through that memory if i give it the chance to think about it. I play videos to escape this world to keep my mind active. It also helps me deal with my various pains I'm dealing with as well. PTSD is no joke and it is known as the silent killer of veterans for a reason, which is eventually they decide to permanently toss in the towel if they don't properly cope with it. I avoid games that deal with this kind of subject matter for that reason mostly, however if you enjoy that, that's on you, but i wouldn't be surprised if you stop playing because this game gets too deep.

This is my favorite game its so realistic. Most of the time in video games a just mercilessly slaughter everyone but this one it just felt wrong because of the people cowering and the home with old people.
Edit: When I beat the wife to death she dropped 2 gems so sometimes its an option

I pirated this game, loved it and bought it on console. In fact, every game I've ever pirated that I loved, I bought on pc or console. That being said, on console, it's harder for me to queue control of your survivors vs PC. Am I the only one who had trouble with this?
I was so used to the quickness of mouse movements from one survivor to the next, the console version slowed me down when time is of the essence.

With all due respect, it wasn't a civil war. It would have been impossible in a civil war for one side to besiege the capital city as Serbs did besiege Sarajevo for the entire war. The Bosnian war was an aggression of RBiH by Serbs, instructed out of Serbia, done by Bosnian Serbs and Serbs from Serbia in lesser count.

Do not play it on PlayStation. It’s so buggy. And it crashes every time you scavenge. I saw a soldier about to rape a girl at the market. I opened the door and tried to aim at the soldier but it kept aiming at the girl I was trying to save. I decided maybe it’s cause I need a gun. So I restarted and had a gun. I open the door the girl runs it locks on the girl and I kill her. 😐

A few things that ruined this game for me...
The worst for me was when players would be "Broken". I understand the idea and even kind of like it, but it happens way too easily in my opinion. If you steal or kill someone you almost instantly become depressed or broken. That bothers me because in this game we all know you have to steal and kill if you're gonna make it past day 5. To me it's completely unavoidable, and most times you can't talk your way out of it either.
Another big deal to me is how they pretty much throw you under the bus immediately. My first few playthroughs (if you want to call them that) I was starving, exhausted, and depressed before I knew how to make a bed. And without Roman guarding the house you will almost definitely be attacked and robbed every night.

Since when does Americans give a crap about war lol. Just because the media and politicians tell us now we're supposed to care? War is always horrible and indefensible. However there has been countless wars over the last 20 years and before that and not many people can tell you where they took place how many people died and why they didn't donate money. I find it strange that every single place you turn it to now is talking about me praying yet there are actual wars and civil wars going on outside of Ukraine that no one cares and many don't even know about. I'm not saying you shouldn't care about Ukraine quite the contrary I'm happy to see people taking interest in the war prevention and denouncing people that wage war. However I just like to remind people to stop for a minute and think about why they care and why they haven't cared. There are many wars that our government and media want to happen so therefore they don't cover it or they support it. Just because the media tells you to care doesn't mean you're supposed to jump in line like a sheep think for yourself make your own decisions ignore mainstream narratives. For example donating to this war is amazing and necessary for a civil society. However donating a trillion dollars at a time of economic crisis and inflation and debt is not necessarily feasible. I would just say stop following everyone else's example and make your own judgments and if you don't know much of the subject stay out of it

Any game that inspires someone to recommend Robert Evans is ok in my book.
Everyone should listen to the Podcasts he does. Behind the Bastards is great. He’s on The Worst Year Ever with Katie and Cody-showdy. It Could Happen Here is *required* listening (also it’s about to change formats. Season one was a ten part narrative. Season two will be a daily show)
