I lost my mother when I was a teen and without checking photos or videos, I can no longer remember her voice or her face. But people are not their face or their voice, but the impact they leave in you, and nobody has impacted me more than my mother, so even if I cannot remember her details, I will forever remember something much more important. What a beautiful episode.
The conversation between Voll and Himmel is one of my favorite moments because it truly highlights Himmel's selfless nature. Voll's love story is a mirror image of Frieren and Himmel. In both cases, one partner's lifespan is exceedingly longer, inevitably leading to a considerable amount of loss and grief for the one left behind. I believe Himmel decided right then and there he'd never confess his true feelings to protect Frieren from the same fate. Yet again, he puts his own desires and wants aside for the sake of someone else. Himmel's narrative function in the story is similar to Thors' from Vinland Saga. They represent an ideal all the other characters strive towards. The noble deeds of Himmel the Hero have affected the behavior of so many characters in this show. Why did Heiter adopt Fern? According to his own words: "Because it's what Himmel the Hero would have done." Frieren begins to help people on her journey even when the tasks seem insignificant and benign to carry Himmel's legacy into the future, etc.
Your comment is beautifully written and framed. i adore how you incorporated Vinland Saga in making your point as well. Both shows have so much additional subtext and character and theme explorations within each episode, that can be nuanced and subtle, and so makes for great discussion and introspection. All the best to you.
Frieren realizing that Old Man Voll truly is senile and no longer remembers the Demon King's death never fails to make me emotional. I love that she didn't try to correct him, and instead just said she will carry his memory onwards. You can't go an episode of Frieren without feeling emotional!
I have a silly but fun theory about this: Voll is not actually senile yet, the villager in the beginning of the episode mentioned to them that they can't keep a proper communication with Voll because they think he's a senile person, something that the old man is always pretending, so maybe for that lack of contact with the rest of the people he was never aware of the news about the Demon King's death. However, I'm still thinking that Voll being senile makes more sense.
Its hit even harder when I learned from other comment section, that when people on the final stretch of life some time will regain a moment of clarity before they pass.
You notice how the information fits together as the episodes progress. Himmel having made the statues to be remembered, gets an extra boost when he hears the story of the old dwarf who forgot the image of his wife
I wonder if it's also intended to help Frieren specifically remember the heroes' faces when she enters the twilight of her life. She's particularly (and justifiably) prideful of her memory but Voll was bereft at no longer being able to picture his wife's face; Himmel seems like the sort of contentious guy who would worry about Frieren feeling the same way in her far-flung future.
I love how much emotion they can pack into half of an episode How much you can feel for a character like Voll in such a short amount of time. What a show
I like how Frieren's farewell to Voll changed from "Goodbye" to "See you later" after he tells her he dreamt of his wife, like she recognized that he still has something to live for.
Bro these girls reminding japanese animator to have work balance is so wholesome, people usually didn't give a single F or even noticed, respect to both of you who paying attention to what is going on in anime industry.
I think Lola made an excellent concise point about how this is a story made by people who love people. I think some shows that try to be too positive, can often run the problem of coming off insincere or preachy, or maybe even some peoples idea of positivity can seem a bit warped or counter intuitive. I think Frieren works so well, because it usually and often comes iff very sincere, and candid, and aware and reflective. Like one story might have a vey long lived character like Voll remember his human wife in great detail, because he loved her so much, and thought about her so much its ingrained in his being. That is kind of a sweet and romantic idea, but instead in this story, went with his memory struggling, and her image, and voice fading, into haze, but regardless his actions show he still obviously very much loved and loves her. There are people who I have loved who are no longer in my life, I often try to remember their voices. Its also small quirks I remember most too. My eye sight isn't the best, so the visual idea of some of them is a bit hazy already as it is. Even though I won't live as long as Voll or Frieren I already know with time, my already hazy image of them will get hazier. either way though I will cherish my memories of them, and shows like Froeren also make me happy knowing how many other people out there, can reflect on such ideas. As well as relatively self contained episodes too, I think this is one of anime's best, as far as the ability to stand by it self (though obviously there is a lot of great subtext and additional running plots and themes present as well, Character moments, parallels, framing so on (especially as far as love (including non romantic types) and time).
10:00 The moment Himmel realizes he loves Frieren to much to burden her with centuries or more of mourning for him after he dies, that he will never be able to express his feeling to her. One of the few times he isn't smiling.
I recommend Spy x Family if you need a happy show to watch during Monster 😂 It’s a bit light on plot but it’s heavy on funny and cute feel good moments. Also Frieren’s VA is in it playing a totally different character lol
We all die 3 deaths. The first is when we take our last breath. The second is when the last person to know us takes their last breath. The third is when our name is spoken for the last time.
Ok, if you want something "nice" to replace Frieren it has to be either Apothecary Diaries, or Dungeon Meshi. Alternatively maybe a comedy like Spy x Family, Brave Bang Bravern, or Kaguya- sama: Love is War.
It's a fair comparison between Violet and Frieren, but to be honest Frieren S1 (and the rest of the manga) it's the definitive masterpiece of "healing shows", even above Vinland S2 imo, i'm pretty sure we are witnessing the birth of one of the greatest show ever created
frieren may have good emotional peaks at every single episode, but the peaks that vinland saga S2 reach are in my opinion more intense, tho vinland saga has fewer peaks than frieren
Frieren is constantly good while Vinland Saga is a drama so it builds its tension that eventually explodes. Frieren makes you feel good but Vinland Saga shows you the bad parts of healing that's why the payoff is so good. TLDR: Both are good for different reasons
I really think you girls would like Mushishi. It probably won’t win any polls unfortunately because it’s more under the radar compared to what usually gets suggested.
I remember to watch Monster and without spoiling anything, i felt like my brain was getting cooked at times. It's a show that requires you to pay attention and really use your brain to figure it out what is happening. Very very good show. A unique masterpiece and the type of anime that you don't see anything of the like. It's very intelligent and well written.
This series gets everything right. Frieren's character development is the best I have ever seen in any form of media. It is portrayed so subtly and in such a variety of ways. For instance, in this episode she gets angry when Voll suggests she may have forgotten Himmel's face or voice. Having watched the whole series, this is the only time that Frieren gets angry - a brilliant way of showing just how much she cares for Himmel.
for my opinion this is the very first episode, where you can sense that frieren is really progressing with understanding herself and her surrounding. This episode gets me every time. I worked on and with old people as a nurse, and all of them are rly cuties.
A lot of the post-episode discussion about Frieren becoming "more human" and in touch with her emotions has me thinking that Elves probably evolved to be stoic or unattached and with low romantic drives as something of a defense mechanism for how long they live. Even in our human lifespans loss and heartache are already just about unbearable and we sometimes build little barriers to make anticipated future pain a little more tolerable, or we stop getting as close to people as a result. Thousands of years without such mechanisms would be a curse of unending suffering, but as an elf Frieren was able to walk off her entire village being slaughtered right off the bat (although she at least clearly holds a grudge against demons for it).
we also have to take into consideration frieren spent the biggest part of her life alone. she was pretty young for an elf when her village got destroyed and then flamme got her under her wing. 50 years later flamme is telling her to keep a low profile until she kills the demon lord. how many centuries later her 1st adventuring group found her. she was alone for that period of time. for all we know the only loss she ever encountered up to that point was her village getting massacred. that makes me think that elves dont really leave their villages unless they decide to become adventurers, we already know they dont develop feelings for romance etc... which probly means they are built like that from the get go. They start changing when they go into the world and mingle with humans. we can see how much more expressive kraft was in comparison to frieren.
That is a good analysis, but, it ignores a certain aspect of the setting. This is not a story of an Elf or robot "becoming human", it is a story of self discovery. The Elves of this setting don't need to become human or anything like that because they are already perfectly normal organisms. The only difference an elf has from a human or dwarf is their different perception of time. The Elves have all the same feelings, emotions and social concepts that humans have with the only real difference being their concept of time. To an elf 100 years is nothing but to a human, it's a lifetime. Consider this, humans meet and marry creating a family usually during the first 2 to 3 decades of out lives. During that time frame we grow up, learn a skill to support ourselves and interact with our friends and family and our social circle, leading to us finding the person we wish to spend our time with and marry to create a family. The elves do the exact same thing but with a different time perception. The Elves in this setting are almost the same as the Elves in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. They are practically immortal unless killed in battle and have perfect memories. That means that they do not perceive time in the same way a human does. For them learning a skill won't take a few years, an elf might spent a couple of centuries perfecting their art, but to them it would be the same thing a human did while going to college for 4 years. So, in comparison to the human example I mention above, an elf would grow up for about a century, learn a skill they are interested in for a couple of centuries, meet someone nice during that time and spent time with them for a couple more centuries and then get married. The same thing a human would do, but because of the different life expectancy and time perception, that leads to a dissonance and conflict between the races. We have seen this already with Fern. It's not that Frieren doesn't care for Fern or she doesn't understand her, it's simply the fact that Frieren can easily spent a decade in a village taking the sights and learning everything there is to know about the area and nothing of note would have happened in the world. Fern cannot do that. But even with all that a normal Elf would have been a lot better in interacting with the rest of the world, be they human or dwarves, than Frieren is. Case in point Kraft, who seems to be far better in interacting with other humans during the times we have seen him. A normal Elf would have understood everything Himmel tried to convey to Frieren and all the things that he did for her that showed his love for her. Because they would do the same thing when courting their own significant other. But Frieren didn't pick on that. Why? That is because Frieren is emotionally distant or stunted , and that is by choice. Frieren is not a reliable narrator and that is something most people miss when they see the show. As we have established the Elves have emotions, the same range and with the same intensity as humans. Frieren's comment that the Elves don't have romantic and reproductive urges is wrong because that is her perception alone and this claim has already been debunked by the anime and manga. If they lacked romantic and reproductive urges then they would have gone extinct a long time ago because no new elves would be born and no families would exist. But that is not the case as we have seen that Frieren herself lived in a village with her family, and the village had families and more importantly CHILDREN. That means that the Elves do have romantic and reproductive urges, same as all other races in this world. They are simply living in a different time than the rest of the races of this world such as humans and dwarves, and that creates a dissonance with the rest of the races because the Elves don't understand why all other races make quick decisions and seem to be in a hurry all the time and the rest of the world don't understand the Elves because it seems as if they move and do things at a snail pace, when in reality all of them are doing the exact same thing but have a different understanding of time because of the different perception and life expectancy. A human or even a dwarf cannot spent a decade in a village visiting a friend, an elf could easily do so because in their eyes if they are away from home for a decade, nothing of note would have happened. If they have a family, a decade later would be as if they went to visit a friend in another city and they returned home after a week. Something might have happened but you wouldn't expect to have lost the childhood of your children. And there is the difference in the perception of time that creates all the problems between the races. Now, the reasons for the Elves going extinct I mentioned before. The reason that the Elves are going extinct is not a lack of romantic and reproductive urges. They are going extinct for two reasons. The first reason is the near total war that the demons declared on them that led to a lot of casualties and the second is their different sense of time. While they do have reproductive urges and romantic feelings, because they live for so long it is not necessary for them to find a romantic partner and create a family within the first 2 to 3 decades of their lives as humans usually do, meaning that the birth rates of the Elven race are significantly lower compared to the other races. Add to that the war with the Demons for more than a millennia, that we know of, and you have a recipe for disaster. The elven population was decimated as a result of the genocidal war with the demons and the elves are now few and far between with their population dwindling and dying out. If they could get together and create a secluded community they might save their species, but that would be difficult because they would have to start actively searching the continent to find the remaining Elves and bring them together. Now why is Frieren different than a normal Elf? That is because of the way she grew and lived. Frieren was the sole survivor of the attack on her village when she was a young girl. After that she lived with Flamme that taught her that the best possible way to fight effectively against demons is to be an unknown quantity. To hide her mana and to have never made a name for herself so that the demons would have never heard of her. While they visited towns and cities for supplies and news, they never interacted for anything more than shopping with anyone. So, Frieren's social skills and manners are nothing more than what is needed to interact civilly with another for work and shopping. After all, after Flamme's death she secluded herself in her forest and lived as a hermit. She only visited towns and kingdoms for supplies and news. Nothing more. She has no real understanding of how to behave around people, she had no real friendships or relationships of any kind until Himmel and his party pestered her to go with them. Himmel, Heiter and Eisen were the first real friends she had since Flamme! So, of course she didn't understand most of the things Himmel did for her! She didn't because she doesn't know, even now, what he really meant to her. It's only now that she has started to understand her own feelings and Himmel's feelings. That is the tragedy of their story. Being an Elf of course has it's own place in the story, giving us that different sense of time an elf has in contrast to a human, but it is really a combination of factors that led to the tragic love story we see before us.
@@josefill4 What about The Promised Neverland?..... I mean...you have children overcoming "some" difficulties... they will surely love it... or they will never trust us again ( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯50/50)
Mushishi Made in Abyss The promised neverland If you girls are so much into deep storytelling and emotional bondings between the characters there is no way but watching these shows. I highly recommend thinking about it.
You two should watch Dungeon Meshi after you finish Frieren! I watched the 2 shows together and it's the perfect balance. One makes you cry and the other makes you laugh Both are great
If you want happy future recommendations to balance out the mood with monster, I recommend a little anime called banana fish, a wholesome love story takes place in the beautiful New York with such a lovable cast, great humor a real uplifting story that makes you all warm throughout the day No wait I can't 😂 I'm not that sadistic, I'm joking don't watch that unless you're ready to be scarred for life, I didn't lie about it being a love story in New York and the leads are lovable but the rest is just trauma Wholesome anime ? Maybe chihayafuru or march comes in like a lion, dungeon meshi is good too
on the topic of animation at the beginning of the video sadly I dont think theres any studios that dont expect a lot of overtime and crunch from their employees. When the animators for JJK complained about working conditions it was aimed at the industry as a whole and not just certain studios or anime so I imagine there we was a lot of overtime for Frieren season 1 and will be the case for season 2 as well
What’s sad to me was Himmel was alive in the beginning of the series and was an old man just like this old man and Frieren didn’t tell him then how she felt and touched her life. She didn’t know at that time until he passed away. Damn it! She had her chance! 😥
I lost my mother when I was a teen and without checking photos or videos, I can no longer remember her voice or her face.
But people are not their face or their voice, but the impact they leave in you, and nobody has impacted me more than my mother, so even if I cannot remember her details, I will forever remember something much more important.
What a beautiful episode.
that is beautifully said
You made me cry again
The conversation between Voll and Himmel is one of my favorite moments because it truly highlights Himmel's selfless nature. Voll's love story is a mirror image of Frieren and Himmel. In both cases, one partner's lifespan is exceedingly longer, inevitably leading to a considerable amount of loss and grief for the one left behind. I believe Himmel decided right then and there he'd never confess his true feelings to protect Frieren from the same fate. I don't think there's a need to compare both shows. Both Frieren and Vinland Saga are excellent shows that portray the best qualities of humanity.
Best anime of the last decade easily.
I really think you girls would like Mushishi. It probably won’t win any polls unfortunately because it’s more under the radar compared to what usually gets suggested.
They totally would! It actually has a lot in common with Frieren.
They would _adore_ Mushishi.
mushishi s1 is one of the best things ever
Yes, also natsume is a good one as well, at least to me
i did like the 1st episode but somehow i find it boring afterwards
"I can't cry I have to go somewhere after this"
Frieren ep 3: "I'm don't know [if it's important to me], that's what I'm trying to find out."
Frieren ep 16: "It's important to me."

NGL I wanted Frieren to win to give you guys a break but I want you to react to Monster so bad, both anime are so good
THEY'RE GOING TO WATCH MONSTER??? YESSS
AFTER HAIKYUU
I love the subtle moments in this show, great reaction!
Frieren is gonna carry that weight...
ARCANE ARCANE ARCANE!!
Yes, yes Frieren, we know you remember EVERYTHING about Himmel...
This is my favorite show, and I did not expect it to be before I saw it.
i'm so glad that you still mention monster hahah
A lot of the post-episode discussion about Frieren becoming "more human" and in touch with her emotions has me thinking that Elves probably evolved to be stoic or unattached and with low romantic drives as something of a defense mechanism for how long they live.

Being an Elf of course has it's own place in the story, giving us that different sense of time an elf has in contrast to a human, but it is really a combination of factors that led to the tragic love story we see before us.
they’re watching too many happy shows. Chat let’s sentence them to made in abyss
Made in Abyss is not their type of show
@@josefill4 What about The Promised Neverland?.....
I mean...you have children overcoming "some" difficulties...
they will surely love it...
or they will never trust us again
( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯50/50)
@@EbziDP i've heard the S1 it's phenomenal but the S2 was below average
@@josefill4 WDYM buddy?.....there's no such thing as Season 2 (that thing was just a very awful collective nightmare, are we clear ಠ_ಠ?)
I hope they watch Eighty Six at some point
U guys should reacts to apothecary diaries ❤
Frieren was the right choice.
perfect show for them
Sorry to post this here, but will you guys be reacting to season 2 of Arcane?
Mushishi
Made in Abyss
The promised neverland
If you girls are so much into deep storytelling and emotional bondings between the characters there is no way but watching these shows. I highly recommend thinking about it.
You two should watch Dungeon Meshi after you finish Frieren! I watched the 2 shows together and it's the perfect balance. One makes you cry and the other makes you laugh
Both are great
Arcane season 2?
If you want happy future recommendations to balance out the mood with monster, I recommend a little anime called banana fish, a wholesome love story takes place in the beautiful New York with such a lovable cast, great humor a real uplifting story that makes you all warm throughout the day
No wait I can't 😂 I'm not that sadistic, I'm joking don't watch that unless you're ready to be scarred for life, I didn't lie about it being a love story in New York and the leads are lovable but the rest is just trauma
Wholesome anime ? Maybe chihayafuru or march comes in like a lion, dungeon meshi is good too
Loved your emotional reactions this episode Lola! ❤
Idk if Dr Stone has been in any polls but I really want them to watch it one day. I feel like they would really enjoy it especially the characters
That’d be cool
on the topic of animation at the beginning of the video sadly I dont think theres any studios that dont expect a lot of overtime and crunch from their employees. When the animators for JJK complained about working conditions it was aimed at the industry as a whole and not just certain studios or anime so I imagine there we was a lot of overtime for Frieren season 1 and will be the case for season 2 as well
Have they started Arcane s2 in patreon yet?😭
THE FRIEREN EXPERIENCIE:

(You guys not watching Arcane season 2?)
Im so early! 1 minute ago, lets gooo
What’s sad to me was Himmel was alive in the beginning of the series and was an old man just like this old man and Frieren didn’t tell him then how she felt and touched her life. She didn’t know at that time until he passed away. Damn it! She had her chance! 😥
Well, she can do it when she sees him in heaven 😊
@ true! 😇
