  • I'm not a fan of hot hatches. I'm definitely not a fan of cheap superminis. But they're popular, and for good reasons - they provide a lot of performance in a practical package and they're many people's first steps into performance car ownership.
    The market is currently dominated by the Focus ST, but the Corsa VXR is a strong second for the supermini marketplace. One of my viewers offered me the chance to try his, so what did I think?

    I'm not a young person and I've recently got one of these to replace our aging Scooby for my Mrs. I get the image thing but we were after a small hatch with some zip and the Fiesta ST seemed overpriced for what it is but we could have had a Clio RS instead but when it comes to reliability I'd always avoid French cars full stop !
    I'm a company car driver and had Vauxhalls for over a decade. I've never experienced any catastrophic failures or any real problems with them as I didn't abuse them. We found a 13 plate VXR with 29k miles for reasonable money and have had it for a couple of months now.
    Haven't spanked it too much yet and the Mrs doesn't do many miles in it so no issues to report yet. It's quick when you want it and very linear with its delivery, stops well and handles pin sharp. Ride is very firm ( to be expected ) but more refined than a Cooper we had a few years ago. The seats are the star of the interior but as you say, its a Corsa so don't expect Jag levels of luxury. Only thing ours is missing is bluetooth but the DAB is a nice bonus.
    As for the reliability 'issues' I'd say just serivce them regularly and allow them to warm up and cool down when you give it the beans. Clearly if your extracting more horses you can kiss goodbye to reliability ( same as Scooby's ) so if you put a dodgy map on and a piss poor air filter on your going to ruin your turbo and starve the engine of oil just when it needs it. My advice is that if 190bhp isn't enough just get a car that already has more, it will work out cheaper and won't give you the headaches of a modded one !

    I bought my VXR back in December, with some crappy little mods but price was right. In that time, I have Stage 4'd it and she's pushing 285bhp/290lb torque and it's a different animal to the one that you test drive in this video.
    Upgrades are as follows (work done by Warren at WG Motorworks): Forged Wiseco pistons (79.5mm), ARP rods, uprated valve springs, Turbosmart recirc valve, Turbo Dynamics ko4 hybrid turbo, Airtec Intercooler, Enhance Performance turboback (sports cat) exhaust system and mapped by Richard @ Rabbid Tuning. Expensive but well worth it if you can afford it.
    Nice cars, but standard they worry you mostly because of the infamous "P4 issue" which took my enjoyment from the car until I had the works done. She's shocked a few people suffice to say.

    I had the 2009 Arden edition and had nothing but endless problems with it. Yes it's fun to drive and grips fairly well when chucked in to a corner, however like you mentioned in your video about the engine and gearbox, that is right on money. The gearbox went bang and set me back a pretty penny. Traded it in and got myself an audi A3 sportback.

Gearboxes are made by Nestle but the around town mpg I don't agree with, around town in really bad traffic I'd get low twenties high teens, on average I'd get 27mpg mixed and that was on Arctic edition which came with a Remus exhaust so similar to your test car, the blue seats are part of that Arden edition btw!

    Owned my stage 2 corsa vxr a little over 2 years now, overall very happy as mine has only ever gone wrong once with that being the eps unit. It's a crazy little car that has that scary hot hatch feeling when pushing on tight twisty lanes.
    I have also had the pleasure of driving the fiesta st and it is a much better car in every way, don't let that sway you though the corsa vxr is cheaper to buy and a mad little car and loads of fun if you find a good one.

    I'd certainly be interested in your thoughts on the Fiesta ST - we had a 2016 one for 18 months and I utterly hated it. The seats were unusable for me - really irritating after about 10 minutes driving.
    The agility everyone lauds in them felt more like instability - after talking with some other owners and changing my driving style to be more aggressive on turn-in I had one great run in in Sport mode were I started to feel the car move at the rear with an aggressive entry and hold on cusp of oversteer and it felt great, turned around with the ESP switched off and it felt lethal - sudden mid-corner oversteer requiring quick correction, leading into understeer as you held it on the throttle and the front wheels began to slip. Tried it once in the wet with ESP disabled and it was even more nervous, and even in the dry it hated rough surfaces, dragging the nose left and right on throttle.
    It looked good, but the ride, seats, engine (throttle response, power delivery, front axle couldn't handle the torque) and gearbox shift (never felt as precise as the Mk6 Fiesta Zetec-S I still have) all disappointed.

    I love a proper small hot hatch. Nothing better for our country lanes. I'd love an ST 200.
    I have a GTC and wound have a Vx again, the electrics in the enfotainment are shite, all Vx suffer the same ground loop issue, and they 'can't' fix it. I fused it with a £6 in line filter! Also they can't seem to fix my door card squeak and rattle. The leather door card is squeezing against the leather armrest/door pull. 3 times they have fixed it. I never bothered attending the 4th time. Slamming the door sorts it for a week or two. Moaning aside, the GTC chassis and set up is fantastic. I'll miss it when it goes, quirks said.
    As I was bored today at the hospital (with wife) I nipped to the pug dealership, and drove a 1.2l 3cly auto. I was amazed how nippy the tiny engine was, but the star of the show was the 6 speed auto box. It was fast and like butter. The car was decent too, but once your hitting 70 the engine ran out off puff and it was drinking fuel.

      JayEmm on Cars the 308 1.2 3cyl had averaged 36.1 over 6k on the trip computer. Later in the day i drove the 1.8tsi 180bhp seat leon estate FR tech, that's a nice engine, quite pokey and over the 2.5k miles it had averaged 46mpg, which is decent for a petrol vat of that power and size. Nice chassis too the leon (Mqb).
      I don't mind the burning of fuel, as long as it half fun. But at 35mpg average, I want more than a 10-12s 60 car.
      Tbh that 308 gt line, was a very nice car and is a better buy than a normal mini/fiesta/corsa etc. Iirc it was £18k fully loaded, including a full pano roof and great seats. Would make a nice town car. Feels half the weight of the mini (detest the new ones), and had 10x the exterior of anything in its class/price point (like all the new pugs tbh).
      If I was after a hot hatch, it wouldnt be the 308, it would be the st150 or 200, but if you dont care for fun driving the 308 in gt line, is a loverly place to be lots of faux leather, stitching and soft plastic, everything the fiesta mini and corsa isn't.
      You'd be mad to chose an average fiesta etc over the 308. If only if had a 150/200bhp version. It may for all I know, but it's chassis setup may not be up to the ST. The 308 is nowhere near as direct as my GTC. But that has uprated suspension all round, plus other tricks.
      I'm just babbling now. I seem to do that once cars come up. When the Arona gets the VAG 1.5petrol that's in the faux Octavia vrs. (the one that looks vrs ish) 150bhp and about 200lb ft. That in FR (and above) trim will be a nice combo.

    I test drove one of these a few years ago when I thought I was interested in Vauxhalls. I was so underwhelmed. It didn't feel much faster than the 1.4 90hp Corsa I had at the time when I gave it the full beans. In comparison to my first EP3 Civic Type R with similar power and performance figures, that felt much more urgent and faster! Perhaps it was the NA and instant cable throttle response but since test driving the Corsa VXR I have not looked at one since and would never consider any of the range again. Perhaps with the exception of a Monaro or VXR8.

    Dear Cletus, the VXR would be well suited for independent evaluation by two testers ( yourself and Jack ), followed by a discussion of your findings. As a pocket rocket, the Corsa tends to polarize opinion, especially with people who've never driven one. You came away impressed, perhaps Jack would be more critical. That was a bad first overtake. Anyways nice review, the corsa is a nice car despite what people say and the sporty ones look the best. I've not drive one, but they will be pretty quick for a turbo hatchback. The image just like the fiesta ST etc are aimed at the young folk and as such the audience ruins the image with their chavvy boy racer crap, but if you want a sporty hatchback you just have to look passed it. I like that the vxr like the St has a valve exhaust so you don't really need to change the exhaust for a more sporty sound

    I still don’t think there’s such thing as a sporty front wheel drive hatchback, would always get something like an MX5 or MR2 if I wanted cheap and sporty. Often are cheaper to insure for young people too as little hot hatches are so common the insurance prices are inflated.

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  6 років тому +2

      Front wheel drive cars can be fun, just a different kind of fun to RWD or AWD. There's a limit to the power they can take though, I think the new Civic is right on that limit

    • @chrisogrady28
      @chrisogrady28 6 років тому

      JayEmm on Cars I don’t know, it’s a sticking point for me, I still find my alfa fun, but it’s not sporty. I think even with low power you can really feel a difference in personality and when looking for that sporty experience a low down RWD car is the most important. My first car was an old 1 Series 3 door, only had about 150bhp and it wasn’t a sports car by any means but as a young enthusiastic driver, it was a completely different experience to everyone else’s little fwd superminis.
      In recent years I’ve valued more and more the engineering simplicity of longitudinally mounted front engined, manual gearbox, RWD cars, and everything else feels wrong, thus my current search for a 135/335 :)

      Christopher O'Grady I'd disagree with you. I found the MX5 NC, in both 1.8 and 2.0 guises, to be lacklustre. Nice to sit in, but it didn't *drive* like a sports car. I had a Caterham 7 at the time, so RWD fun wasn't new to me, but I found several FWD hatches that felt more fun and more sporty than the MX5... Including the Mazda 2 1.5 Sport and MINI Cooper/Cooper S and even the little Ford SportKa. I dare say that in outright pace, the MX5 was faster, but it didn't feel it.

    • @chrisogrady28
      @chrisogrady28 6 років тому

      A Nother I have to say that's surprising to me, well maybe setting your sporty bar with the cat changed what you expect from a car as an MX5 won't feel special after that, but for most people a modest sports car like an MX5 does feel different and special and I think that's the important differentiator. Personally I'd rather have an old S2000 over any fast hatchback because I value feel and experience over practicality.
      Maybe the NC is just the soft generation of the mx5?

Vauxhall or GM for that matter had far more suitable engines that would easily make the power without pushing the engine too far, i have a 1.8 Vectra that's supposed to be 140hp naturally aspirated so why couldn't they have just used that engine?

      I haven't owned either but I learned in a 2012 Fiesta (2008 launch) and two of my mates have 2008 Corsas and the Fiesta was so much more solid feeling. I constantly hear noises in the Corsas, both had squeaky clutches, both had huge wind noise, both did this juddering at 80mph, both were plasticky as hell inside. I've also sat in an Insignia, it felt the same - the whole centre console moved when I pulled on it as if it was held down with string. General Motors I guess. They make my 2008 Alfa Romeo feel like a Lexus...

    • @resnonverba137
      @resnonverba137 6 років тому +2

      VXR.. - I'm not anti-Corsa because of their name but because every one that I've had the misfortune of driving has been awful. Sit in the original Ka and it just felt right and drove brilliantly. The Puma 1.7 was the same but on steroids. I have felt the same in a number of other cars from humble city-cars to 'supercars'. The Corsas felt as if they had been designed by someone who hated driving and their interiors by someone who hated design.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 6 років тому +2

      Christopher Bell I have to agree with you. I spent some time driving a new 2008 Corsa Sri, which had the same engine as the VXR, but detuned to about 145hp or thereabouts. I had a SportKa at the time, and the Corsa was awful in comparison. Overly stiff and under damped, it hopped and skipped over the roads, where the Ka just flowed. It felt like a heavy car too, sluggish, not light and nimble. The older, previous generation Corsas felt better to drive, although they still weren't great. But they didn't rust like the Fords did. 😉
