This past week has been a whirlwind of crazy for me, I had a really traumatic experience yesterday when some guy came into my work and started harassing me and my coworker. We had to call the cops in the end and now every little thing is making my emotions go crazy. How do you guys deal with stress and emotions after an intense or stressful event? And how do you continue to function properly?

I wouldn't say that korean beauty products are popular outside of Korea because of idols. People who are into korean skincare, etc. are in general interested in skincare, most of them are not even interested in kpop or kdramas. Also, as a European I can say that Korean skincare can be way cheaper than western, it can also target specific skin issues with good ingredients, whereas with western skincare you get expensive products with ingredients that don't really do sh.. :) basically, we're interested in it because it's affordable and it actually works

In Korean skincare there’s a lot of natural products as their first ingredients and feels milder too (like Western products for acne are stronger than Korean acne products), so I really like that.

I agree with this. I discovered korean skin care before K-dramas or K-pop. In fact I only got into K-dramas because of watching C-dramas and Bts because of Hwarang.

I wouldn't say that K-beauty products are popular outside Korea because of the idols. I don't know what about other countries, but in Russia (where I am from) Korean brands are
often cheaper than European and US brands of the same quality. So the most consumers of Korean products may even never heard any K-pop song besides Psy's Gangnam Style. :)
Plus it's just interesting to try something different.

I feel like plastic surgery happens often in Korea but the reason everyone is expected to be skinny is because the majority is skinny. The reason is not weight standards but more of many have no time to eat and korean food is a lot healthier than American foods. But beauty standards aren’t extremely high among normal people but many get a quick simple surgery to get double eyelids or like botox

from a strictly superficial standpoint (and i hope these are taken as compliments)
    - christine definitely has an idol face
    - with makeup on, grace has the girl crush look, but without makeup (or with minimal makeup) she looks kind of on the adorable side
    - from some angles joan looks like IU, and now that i've said it, you can't unsee it (also kind of looks like a young drew berrymore too)
    - where's ashley she's hot

No k-skincare is popular because it's good. Yes Kim Taehyungs face is life and he is a beautiful creature. But that's not why I like asian skincare. Just how I like Ramen not because it's Korean but because it tastes good. Not everything is about kpop and kdrama. Here in Australia we don't have really detailed skin care products. But guess what we do have SUN and European and Korean suncreens are great!.
Also Liah Yoo and Gothamista just happen to be korean and are only ones who fully describe skincare (aside from Dr.Dray who also reccomends some Asian beauty). If you go on Amino the only skin care stuff is Asian beauty and Korean skincare. It's supply and demand my dudes.

Actually, I like to believe that K-Beauty is popular because it's affordable products that WORK. Back in the day, when I was starting out with skincare and makeup, you couldn't get anything for under 5 bucks to try out before committing fully. But K-Beauty lets you do that, ESPECIALLY WITH SKINCARE. Omg I have never gone back to western brands for skincare unless a friend with sensitive skin recommends it to me.

I thought that was so thoughtful, the bit about beauty standards and whether they should change. As Joan said, seeing it as an option that's there but not feeling pressured to adhere to it is a wise opinion. And I completely agree with Soobean when she said she wished plastic surgery clinics wouldn't advertise in subways and such due to impressionable young girls who should focus on enjoying their childhoods. I've noticed in Korea that they can pretty tightly regulate entertainment standards (idols' attire, profanity in kpop, etc) compared to the US, for instance, in order to protect children- so perhaps this should be seriously considered.

8:15 No hate but you can't compare LA, a city, to Korea, a whole country. Korea does have one of the strongest beauty stardarts, if not then why are you 1st on plastic sugery, diets and skin care, it's real and as a Kpop fan I feel sad for all the idols to suffer to be "perfect"

    • @ytuseracct

and Korea has extreme surgeries that are quite common. Case in point: V-Line, Genioplasty, and the like. In the West, bone surgeries such as these are only the last resort for people who have severe bite issues.

    • @smajical
      @smajical 5 років тому +12

Agreed, and LA is probably the city in North America with the highest and most intense beauty standards. So if Korea in general is similar to LA that just confirms that the pressure to look a certain way is much higher in Korea than in other places

I like to see how different beauty culture can be. I live in Poland and I'm in my twenties. Most of my friends have problem with using moisturizer every day xD and a lot of girls on my university don't wear any makeup (or very simple). I know only few girls who shave their arms. But hybrid nails or fake lashes (permanent one) are quite popular. And I feel like clothings are more revealing than in Korea.

  • @majas1937
    @majas1937 5 років тому

I think apart from being quite cheap and having good ingredients that at least for me the kind of products and the more natural style of makeup are definitely appealing as well. I never heard of actual lip tints before I got into Korean makeup and I absolutely love them and I realized that my makeup style has been quite similar to Korean one for a while now, so it just suits me more than American style. Not to mention I'm rather pale and I honestly find like two products in the store that match my skintone, both of which are either too expensieve or cheap and have bad ingredients. So yeah, I think there are many reasons why Korean makeup is popular. Skincare is kind of self explanatory, since it's just more advanced than most things we have here in Europe. Also, just wanted to say I love your videos Grace!

Usually it is just a formality thing and wont affect ur resume unless it is a job that cares a lot for looks such as cosmetic sales, receptionists, etc. However, the company I currently work in now, the HRD actually uses the picture for face reading such as the expression, the posture, and the attire.

The question "Do beauty standards in South Korea have to change?" is a bit off the mark for me. Of course, I say this with my limited knowledge, but I feel like the problem with beauty standards in general isn't that they exist, but how you present them. If you present them as something people have to follow, that's problematic. Just having them isn't. If the way you present beauty standards doesn't change, it doesn't matter what the beauty standards are, because it'll always lead to negative consequences.
With that said, I think it'll always lead to negative consequences, so I have a fairly passive attitude toward it. I just don't see any way out, so it's better to find ways to cope with it rather than change it. At least that's how I look at it.

I like the vibe in this videos with guests. I agree with Soobean about why kbeauty is so popular These days. I was into kbeauty about 7 years ago by the time my Only source of getting things was online shops. Now they are in every drugstore also in Some pharmacy. In the begining i was kinda mad cause when I needed it There wasn’t that much of a variety of it and also I have to pay for the shiping. Also the Charlote Cho book make people be more intrest in it. Couple popular Beauty youtubers in my country were talking about that book too. Also in my country people actually belive that asian people have wonderful skin. About Beauty standards I think In Korea people care way more about skin /image etc. ( I know how it looks in 2 diffrent countries,1 is another asian country). There was a program about it from my country when reporter goes to Korea to explore a lot of diffrent aspect of living there and meeting people. So what was so suprising for him and propably for the most vievers is that how much men care for skin. (It wasn’t suprise for me cause I was intrested in kpop etc for 7 years) also how many preparatom it took to take a photo when you looking for a job. How unlike you it looks. Maybe in Some other places also they care so much. So I watched another video Where someone was question about „if beauty standards shoud change” and that korean girl said „No” and what i think is that a lot of korean people who consider themselves as the pretty one are just scared of who they will be if Beauty standards will change? As Joan said what was wrote in the book, they are in better positive now so what would happen to them?

what bothers me about the korean beauty standard is its complete disregard for the diversity of beauty. it's acceptable for people to get cut up to look exactly like eachother, and a society that's like that will fail to recognize there are so many different versions of "beautiful". i'm from hawaii, and here we have women from every race, every country, every background, pure, mixed, whatever, and they're all yummy. i'd hate to live in a place where i couldn't enjoy seeing a variety of different women and everyone just felt they all had to look the same to get anywhere.

Honestly in France vanity is so frowned upon you can't have obvious surgery, you can't have yoo obvious makeup apart from red lips or eyeliner, you can't even dress up too much or have your hair look too done or people will think you're a superficial try hard, you NEED to look like you didn't try
    Clean, but didn't try
I do what I want of course but yeah some people will think I'm not a serious person or I'm dumb or things like that
The number of times a family member would tell me to not get anything done in Korea and the number of people who would ask me about beauty there "because it's so important"

    Hey grace
    So I had a question
I am really not pretty and I wanted to audition into a company if I get accepted and have the choice of plastic surgery should I go for it?

You should do what you truly WANT to do! Not what other ppl want or think about it....

Actually using sheet masks everyday can destroy the natural barrier of the skin ence giving you sensibility and maybe acne

in Indonesia, it is a common thing to point out a person looking so alike to their parents. I remember that one time when my friends meet my parent and they were like "omg you look so much like your dad"
idk its really normal but might be weird for some other countries????

Honestly I don't think korean skin care is so popular just because of kpop, the word just got out that korean people have such great skin because of the culture about it
Personally I opened my eyes when a friend started living in korea and talking how she god rid of her acne and bad skin with a few products and got motivated by seeing everybody with great skin
Idk maybe it's because I got disinterested of kpop and I'm way older now but I feel people aren't like actually following their life routine :')
