It works both ways. Years ago I was free-diving at night on the North Shore of Ohau when I heard this strange sound in the ocean. It sounded like a squeaky screen door. I swam further out, hoping to get a better listen, and I realized I was listening to whales. They must have come in closer because they got louder and clearer. I just floated there, in the dark, listening. It was wonderful.

Tesla was right. The whole universe is energy, vibration and frequency. Even my dearly departed dog loved classical music because of the strings. I wonder if the violin reminds the whales of their own songs. Towards the end of the video, some of the sharp sounds the violinist made reminded me of whale communication. What a transcendental experience to play music for another species and share in the joy of it all!

My uncle was 2nd violinist for a major symphony orchestra. A little over 50 years ago when I was a small child he took me on a magical balloon ride over Stellwagen Bank. It was he, the owner of the balloon and myself. For over an hour we floated about fifty feet over the water while he gave his final concert. A pod of perhaps fifty humpbacks were obviously fans of classical music. The balloonist often took tourists over the spot and he exclaimed that the whales, while frequent visitors to the spot, rarely stayed in the exact same spot for such a long period of time and never remained in a constant state of mid breach. They all just floated there with their heads sticking out of the water. It was the very first time I saw whales. After visiting the whales we continued on our journey and ended up at the Maine coast. Later that evening my uncle passed away. My uncle literally played himself out of the world and for a brief moment took me with him on that magical journey.

I'd say cello, but that could get interesting on a boat. With an instrument held on the chin, your knees act as a shock absorber. Can't do that while sitting on a chair.
Though come to think of it, there was a Classical piece that used a very small cello as a chin instrument... Hmmm...

Renee W. I suppose so, but if you’re going to use all that technology you may as well just play back recordings of other whales, which researchers do. I look at the point here being that you can arouse the whales' curiosity about a voice unlike its own without using any special technology.

I remember well a day of whale watching off Cape Cod. We went out a short distance and the captain shut down the engine. He said that some of the whales really liked to interact with tourists and that they would find us. Sure enough,
a cow with calf came by to check us out. She left the calf about 50 yds. away and came along side. She rolled over on her side so that she could look at all of us leaning over the side. The captain suggested we talk to her. Everyone did. "Sometimes they will wave, if we do first." So we tried that. She slowly rolled a little farther over and waved back with her pectoral fin! Shortly thereafter, she brought the calf to us for more group interactions. What fun and what a great connection.

@@Looserkid13 it's a full yes, humans are caged for being bad and even then it isn't forever, I am a lawyer and I know life sentences don't actually last for life, they have term limits depending on the jurisdiction in some countries like Norway there is no life sentence at all even if you kill someone, other countries have 10years as life in prison so why should animals be giving life in prison simply for being that species or simply for being alive for the simple reason that you want to be able to look at them.
Why not go on safari or go deep sea diving and see them in their natural habitats. Do you know the number of animals that have gone extinct thanks to zoo's? Do you know the number of animals that have died thanks to zoo's.
Do you realise that every city in the world wants a zoo USA has 52 states and has 2,400 legal zoo's almost everyone has a lion and certain animals, Africa has 55 countries Nigeria has 37 states, those 37 states have many cities but the biggest ones have 2 or more zoo's, India has 1,800 legal zoo's, I am an African the first time I went to a zoo in Nigeria I was shocked like wtf would you cage a lizard, elephant, crocodiles, hippos, monkeys etc for me to look at when we run into many many lizards, monkeys etc on a daily basis, snakes too in my house in Nigeria, I can not count the number of snakes I've come across so why do we need them caged in govmt funded public zoo's noone goes to
When you realise that almost every big city in the world has a zoo then you'll see the scale of the problem. I know you are probably from the west or America and you like to think the world begins in your front lawn and ends at your back yard but look beyond you and see if it is a problem or not

Alright there are tons of people stating “she needs lessons” or “it’d be nice if she could play” but honestly I thought it was really good. She managed vibrato on a rocky boat, the humidity and salt would’ve made it murder to tune with but it still sounded quite pleasant, and she was playing what sounded to be a sort of Chinese tune which followed the key in which most whales sing. I don’t know what everyone is talking about

That used to happen to a friend of mine and I when we'd park in a cow field to fish. They'd listen in, but I'm fairly sure they were just waiting to see if we'd feed them anything. Too long, and they'd lose interest and start licking the car that we drove in. You can't see anything in your sideview mirror after a bunch of cows lick it.
If you moved suddenly after playing, they'd probably run. "NOT FOOD!! RUN AWAY!!!".

That was a very sensitive idea of the violinist. The instrument might remind the whales of
their own vocalizations. It has been shown many times that people, animals as well as plants react favourably to beautiful music. (The "Mozart effect," for instance, can help you sleep, or study, depending on the choice of piece you play).
I would not get too close to killer whales, but other whales have been known to come up to people diving or on boats, and are quite gentle. (Unless one frightens them or other factors come into play). Animals are much more sensitive and intelligent than we have been giving them credit for.(I wonder how the whale would have liked Schubert's "Serenade." So lovely).
