- I figured after 7 years it was time to revisit this method of silencing the loud exhaust of the average riding mower. This video has the parts list and a before and after demonstration. Two things that were lacking in the original VHS edition. I also will upload a second video that shows how I made the front muffler. Bonus points for realizing the shirt it the same!

It sounds much better. I used an old stock motorcycle muffler it was long and skinny and very quiet to. after mowing a big lawn my ears would ring for 2 days. motor cycle shops always trade out the ole stock ones for the loud racing pipes. $20 and all chromed out to, lol! hope your backs feeling better my friend. I'm getting shoulder surgery very soon. Take Care'
Well done, sir. That beats my ear muffs with a stick.
Nice job!
Thanks!
I’d like to see a decibel read preferably before and after, for more quantitative data. Supercool video keep it up man!!
Thanks! I understand that there may be an app or something to measure sound with.
Love the standard CARC paint, olive green.
thanks
Awesome!
Awesome content as always ! Hope the back pain is receding
thanks
One thing I would do to help save you paint in the footwells. Order some cheap sheets of skateboard grip tape and custom cut them to fit the footwell. Won't wear the paint and you'll have some nice traction. Great build and videos!
Good tip! Thanks for sharing that
Much much better
I might try a vertical exhaust like old tractors with flap or weather cap. A bolt on plate to support and CB antenna on a pipe on the other side. With a pipe to get the base above hood height.
Cool idea!
Sounds like more engine noise than exhaust noise 😉
Ya done it. engine is just plain noisy with exhaust muffle doing little no matter much. you would have to cover the entire motor with an insulation of course would cause harm to impossible. riding electric tractor would be nice with 25HP.🥴😉
Great video! BTW, do you still run your BBS? I tried to access it and seems to be down. Thanks!

Hey will that devices work on murray riding lawnmover?
happy mothers day to all the ladies on your family
Thank you! You too!
What a difference.
What.....was there any difference can't hear you... been mowing too many years LOL.. no really... good video But how did you tighten it up.. if you leave it loose won't the blow by eventually burn thru the threads? maybe a little ExtremeHeat JB weld ?
Closeups needed so we can see what you’re doing. I’m watching it on a 2.5” X 5” smart phone screen, along with many others.
Sorry about that. Try screencasting it from the phone to your TV. It looks great on our 55 inch.
Pure entertainment, sir!
Thank you.
I'll do anything to get the exhaust behind me
where God intended it to be....snicker...snicker...

Glad you enjoyed it
Cool
You could use metal conduit holders to hang it instead of coat hanger.
Great point, that would work well, but at the time, I used what I had.
Not sure if I missed something but what are these 90s and 45s you are using? It almost looks like standard iron pipe with npt threads.
It is. I bought it at Lowes Hardware. It's very easy to make a great exhaust with it and it holds up very well.
Quieter, yes. Could it be much quieter, yes.
Great video Erik.....I do not remember you buying that harbor freight welder. I guess it is working pretty good for you.
could one daisy-chain two mufflers to make it super quiet? I have a 14.5 HP and need a big muffler!
you might be able to, it could take some finageling to get the 2 mufflers together. Worth a try
Can I have a parts list
Have you ever thought about using a pan muffler something with noisy it down anymore
Where did you buy the muffler? Do you have a link?
You can buy one tractor supplies depends if they have it
Most easiest way to quitting all mowers is to put on noise reduction headphones 🎧
good point, but not nearly as much fun then to tinker with them
Really thought you were gona put a Y in and make dual side pipes. Dye the tire letters white and that thing be rockin!!
Hillbilly I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.
I got it in my about tab.
I know this is old but how quite is it with just the front muffler on and would 2 of them make it quitter
No, you'd still want that rear muffler. You could add a 3rd one and it would help even more.
I just don't understand why You would want it quieter. I always drill out the muffler....I want to hear that bad boy ROAR! Tractor is looking good Erik, Thanks for sharing.
I am trying to save the little bit of hearing that I have left!
Do they make one of these kits for my wife to tone her down when she's yelling at me 🤔🤔🤪. Nice job ,, mower is looking good 👍
AT 9:30 I measured 72 db on the sound. At 11:40 I measured 62 db on the sound. Quite an impressive reduction. Every 3 db down means the noise goes down by half.
It works, glad you could measure it!
Every 10db means the noise is cut in half. You can not measure decibels over UA-cam, as the recording will not keep the volume even.
man almost skipped jus seeing a ryobi
Love the 18+ line up..
cool
Give it a shot!
Well, your eyes are at ear level.. at least that is what it looks like.. same with mine.. even thought my dad used to kick my butt up around my ears for years.. This would have worked for me 30 years ago.. but now at 69 I am almost deaf so I never hear the damn thing anyway...
tinkmarshino I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.

No anti-seize on those threads?
Still can hear it in my house if I'm your neighbor
That is why I love living in the country- my neighbors are far enough way not to be bothered by the noise.
Forget quieter, how do I make it OD Green!
Ha- my wife thought I was crazy for going with that color-. I just used an exterior paint for it
Mine doesn’t even run right
Sweet..but for me, 30 bucks is a bottle of booze and carton of smokes. My priorities have changed since going Off Grid. Love my MUTT though.

It took me a few to figure out that there is another "Mutt" I scratching my head wondering why is Erik taking apart the exhaust that he already modified.🙄
I set my mower on fire and burned 4000 sqft + most likely from muffler touching dried grass. I wanted to do this till that happened…
Sorry to hear that!
I want quieter
I think we all can use quieter mowers.
Nah; you need a few more of those thin mufflers in line instead of that long pipe 😀
Yup still loud as hell lol
You must have missed a step. I love the low rumble this has now and still use it to putter around the farm.
Its still noisy... Booo
Ridiculous
OK?
That didn't make it any less louder at all. All you did was bring the sound closer to you. Mufflers don't control the sound only the back pressure. You need to add baffling to damper the sound which is all you can do.
So, twice now, I've spent the money and time to make these for my equipment because they don't do anything? Sounds like you haven't made one, and don't have any idea what a muffler is.
A muffler has baffles that's how it muffles. Mufflers are strictly for sound. Take a muffler off anything and it gets insanely loud. Almost every race car has no muffler (no baffles) F1, Moto GP, NASCAR, Dragsters, etc all have "straight pipes" the exhaust has no baffles (muffler) and no restrictions. They just have some bends and maybe a crossover pipe.
For engines people need to be around and performance isn't the #1 priority there is at minimum a muffler that inside has baffles, perforations, generally convoluted path, or a combination of these. This bouncing around muffles the sound aka quieter. There may also be a resonator before the muffler. It's like a mini muffler tuned to quiet a particular sound frequency the engine it's mated with makes.
If you would like to learn more about exhaust systems you can lookup terms like "back pressure vs exhaust velocity and scavenging" the UA-cam channel Engineering Explained has a good video if I remember correctly.
On a physics level sound frequencies hit the various restrictions, when they hit a few things happen. Some get reflected (bounce off) and some are absorbed. When they are absorbed 2 things happen, they get converted to heat and a bit gets reemitted at a different frequency (the resonant frequency of the piece that is absorbing it). The sound waves also crash into themselves and cancel out turning into heat.
No sound does not make an exhaust pipe or muffler hot. This is all very low energy. It would increase the temperature of the muffler by a tiny fraction of a degree.
