Cannon has been looking for a reason to dismiss this case from the very beginning and thanks to Clarence Thomas' unsolicited opinion, she now has one. They should both be dismissed from their positions as judges.
This. How is that not mentioned once in the piece. A at Best questionable sc judge did something the supreme court not only doesnt dohe also did it completely out of context. Basically advising cannon to throw the case out which she then, a few days later, did.

The other thing that’s shocking is that the documents case was pretty easy to follow to the crime. It was so shockingly stupid and straightforward. I have no clue how the judge can throw it out. He took documents that weren’t his, the archivist asked for them back, he pretended like he didn’t have them, the archivist went to the “police”, the police asked nicely, Trump said no, and the police went in and took them with a court ordered document. Like Trump was given multiple off-ramps from committing a crime.
I honestly don’t know how much more of this my mental health can take.

How can Cannon's ruling be "shocking"? She has signaled all along that she was doing her best to do trump's bidding.
Harlan Crow bought Thomas & Thomas told Cannon how to rule. Disgusting that a Supreme Court Justice has been bought & paid for.
Surprising? No. Shocking? Yes. Such blatant corruption is always shocking.
I thought she'd take a different path out.
If she'd waited until trial, there were some methods she could have taken to dismiss that would have been literally unappealable because it's considered double jeopardy.
This dismissal is appealable though, and precedent is not on Cannon's side.
(Although we do know that at least one SCOTUS justice agrees with the move)
She dismissed the case late enough to not allow Circuit Court to consider and reverse decision before election, and early enough for Rump to brag about his "innocence" during the campaign. It's a calculated and horrific behavior for a judge.

Presidents should not be allowed to appoint Judges. This is ridiculous, no person is supposed to be above the law.

Presidents don't appoint judges; they nominate judges, whose appointments must then be confirmed by the Senate, which will usually defer to the President's prerogative unless the judicial nominee is egregiously unqualified. Unless the President is a Democrat and the Senate is controlled by Republicans and the next Presidential election is less than 24 months away. Just like the way America's Constitutional system of government is supposed to work 🙄

Judicial branch is supposed to be separate for this reason so yeah, that makes sense. I think they should also not get lifetime appointment and have the same rules where they are automatically fired if they break them. Clarence Thomas would be gone. Kavanaugh would never have been hired. Plus all the federal judges. How if the judges he appointed even allowed to rule over the case? This is BS. Where is the local government in NY? I think local government should step in

Any time there is a horrific tragedy in the world I sit with my feelings of ickiness and confusion until the next Late Night, comforted in the knowledge that Seth's remarks about it will validate the sadness and/or anger I feel, put into words the complexities and fears it stirs up, and provide some path to hope. "Tonight" (I watch the next morning as I wake up and drink my coffee) did not disappoint, I can literally feel the tension leave my muscles hearing someone put words to the thoughts and feelings (guilt, anger, schadenfreude, exasperation...) I've been holding on to over the last 48-ish hours. I am so grateful Seth has the platform he does, for moments like this and all the mornings I wake up knowing I'll get to start my day off with some laughs. (Seth- your work is important, thank you.)
I appreciate Seth's heartfelt words at the beginning of Tonight's A closer Look. We really need that in times like this.

False: The Weimar Republic had a very different political structure and law. We don't have that here. Einstein was wrong about the cosmological constant, something within his expertise, so why listen to him about something outside of it.
@@nuqwestr That quote is actually from Konrad Adenauer, the first chancellor of West Germany after WWII ended, and therefore pretty much Hitler's immediate successor. He (rather unsurprisingly) said a lot of things like that.
The actual (translated) quote is "Only the stupidest calves choose their own butcher." And of course the British version is "like turkeys voting for Christmas".
Adenauer is generally considered to have been a pretty good politician, and he's held in fairly high regard by Germans today. As far as I'm aware he never expressed any opinion on the cosmological constant whatsoever. The similarities between Wiemar and the modern US might be up for debate, but that quote has a fairly obvious and pretty uncontroversial meaning - don't vote for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party if you're a person with a face. Arguing with it really just makes you look like you're being contrary.

Democracy was new to Germans, and many were still uncomfortable with a parliamentary/representative form of government. There are 50 individual states in our commonwealth, the level of authoritarianism, where everyone submits their individual rights to the State, is not in the American character. No, we are closer to another civil war than we are to submitting to State power and control.

It REALLY should have been? But, the problem is, the US justice system has...issues with handling corruption THAT blatant. It was an issue in Trump's other trials, too.

All Seth is saying is that we need to hold leaders accountable for what they say and condemn inflammatory speech that could lead to violence and show that WE should be bigger than pointing the finger. The fact that Trump picked someone who JUST posted something that fans those flames to be the second in line to the presidency is disgusting and increases the divide between the parties rather than try to create a safer country in which senseless violence isn’t just a common occurrence.
