- This is the final devlog about making a mobile game which I've just published on Google Play. I'm talking about strategies to make money out of your mobile app with ads and the struggles I had with the Play store policies. @@devratgames This looks very similar to SkiFree, a game I was playing in the early 90s. Had a Yeti too.
My wife and I played this game for nearly an hour after watching your video. We loved passing the phone back and forth. Truly took us back to the good ole’ days of mobile gaming. Nostalgic for sure. Thanks!

I hope the game does well, in terms of game design it looks interesting!
The game looks nice.
Controls are a bit hard until you get used to it, but they are ok for me.
I would add:
- an animation when player hits a tree: it trembles
- weak/skeleton trees here and there - they are shattered when hit by the player (they have no effect on the player)
- maybe coins should be a bit bigger... or make an aura/bloom to fake this; also, their magnet range should be a bit bigger
- you could add environment effects like snow fall, wind or even day/night cycles.

The controls can be challenging initially. I'd suggest implementing an analog stick system, making left correspond to left and right to right. This would likely be less frustrating. Additionally, incorporating skins and using stones/diamonds for unlocking them as rewards would be a great feature. Keep up the good work, and with some luck, you might just get that Lambo! 😂
The weak trees should slow the player, down if u are hit 4 consecutive times by a weak tree you loose
The game looks great, I think it looks far better with a skier as a character rather than a sphere but the overall design is really good.

I like how you've done the ads as well. I thought it was going to be on every crash, but letting me completely opt out if I want to start from the start again is great.
Honestly had great fun playing, very easy to pick up but you can feel it get progressively harder. Well done mate :)
Yooooo just played the game and I can say I love it so far. Just a suggestion tough, add ramps that you need to use to jump over cracks in the ground to make the game a bit harder. The ramps don't need to be difficult to use and it would also add to the aesthetic of the game.

The game was really fun to play! One of my favorite things is the smooth fade/zoom in when starting up the game and the sounds the character makes, really nice attention to detail!
I see you already added the ski/snowboard characters back into the game, love it. I was a bit confused on the icon and text for selecting the characters in the top left, to me this Players button looks more like something for multiplayer / a friends social feature. One idea that came to my mind regarding this character selection would be to blend the two scenes together: the camera is zoomed in on the character and you have left/right buttons to switch to another character. If the character is unlocked, there's a start game button at the bottom and when you click it the camera zooms out and the game starts.
Another idea for the gameplay would be to add a boost mechanism when the player holds both left and right controls down, depleting a boost meter which refills over time or by collecting special items. This could also be a purchasable skill.
Also at first sight after the first 5 games the characters pricing seemed a bit too high for the first one, it reminds me of the first Temple Run game, where you had to play a long time until you could purchase your first character. I would love a cheap character (next to the one you can get from watching an ad), such that you can purchase something after playing only a few games.
Anyways, the game has a really cozy atmosphere to it. I am looking forward to the follow-up video :)
Ah I just noticed three more things:
- there's some glitching at the seams between the mountain slopes, there's occasionally a black horizontal line flickering
- The jeti stands still (or at least it looks like it does) as soon as the rocks start rolling over him, I think it would look better if he just started to slow down instead of stopping at an instant.
- The app icon is a white circle with a square icon in it. I would suggest either scaling your icon and cropping the circle or use a greenish background color that fits the inner part of your logo. Android Studio has a nice tool to generate all kinds of app icons from an existing image.

Nice one! What approach did you take to spawning the collectable gems? I'm also building a Unity game for mobile. In the game, I spawn minerals in smooth arcs within a procedural 2D cave network (so the minerals follow the general up and down path of the cave). I did this programmatically using bezier curves, which was far more difficult than I first thought. Moving control points around via code really tested my spatial reasoning skills!
The procedural aspect to this makes it far more complicated, as you probably appreciate. You cant just arrange some splines or gameobjects manually. Just wondering what your approach was?

Use PCG's so you don't have to model levels by hand, add borders so there's more of that pinball feel where you can just bounce of sides and add simple powerups like speed or size change (these should be pretty simple to implement ) , doubt ads will pay out much they always bad in playstore, definitely cosmetics to boost a bit of that cash flow. I was playing the game for a while today and it's pretty fun and addicting. The fact that you can simply watch an ad to continue playing indefinitely seems to a be a very nice business model as well, as sometimes I wanted to watch the ad just to get a bit further but some other times I didn't bother but restarted a new run anyway.
Here are a couple of bugs I found while playing though:
1. Between some slope segments there's a flickering horizontal line (I'm playing on an old One Plus 5T device, running Android 10)
2. I got an Ad that was not showing once and went through the Report Ad flow to report that, which causes the ad to end immediately, but upon returning to the Game Screen that was not computed as an Ad view, so I couldn't keep playing, and the "Watch Ad" button was disabled, so I couldn't start a new Ad as well, so I needed to start a new run.
Other than that, looks like a very solid game for the purposes of getting money from ads, nice work!

Downloaded and reviewed. I think controls need to support two-thumb playability. Clicking anywhere just alternates the direction, so sometimes i have to double-tap to go thr direction i want

@@devratgamesIf you could add both and let the player choose that could be good. I'm finding the controls difficult to get used to and the two thumb would be more intuitive
Turn left and right halves of screen into an analogue turn with 0-100 turn speed based on distance between middle and edge of screen. (further left or right the sharper the turn, closer to centre slower the turn). It would make it a better game for normal gamers. Having control over speed of turn is important to normal gamers.
Or
Left screen tap for left, and right screen tap for right is much more intuitive, even if not analogue.
Tap tap is horrible for normal gamers, but maybe non gamers will love it for it's one button approach.
@devratgames I would like to add to this topic. I would love to see a choice come for each kind to allow for different skill levels. Another option I could see is allowing screen rotation to portrait that way the single click feels more intuitive as the landscape view tricks my brain into thinking you can click in each direction. Game was fun and left a review on the play store!
I played the game. The environment looks really nice. It would be nice to have some player character, instead of the ball. I wonder, why the game is not vertical? I think it would suit much better as we are moving down, not left/right, wouldn't it?
The game is hard, but overall good job!

He's got a point, the background is 100% unnecessary and could be removed. Vertical allows more erection time for the player, and therefore feel less cheated for losing because they had the time but just weren't good enough.

You should add different kinds of potions/powers on the way, lets say player can collect invisibility power while they are sliding down just like they collect coins and when they click on the potion the player becomes invisible for 10s?

Make the ball a snow ball and have it get larger as it’s going down the slope. Not only do they need to avoid obstacles the growth of the snowball would introduce another level of complexity

Hi! Great work and very catchy concept I think. One question, how much code do we need to know to make this game? I've started learning C# couple of weeks ago, I'm learning concepts, haven't checked Unity yet. I also wonder if I can create basic games with "Visual Scripting" thing in Unity. (people say Unreal's blueprint system works fine for basic games)

Hi! Thank you! I haven't looked into Visual Scripting for Unity but pretty sure you can create a game like this using it, there's no advanced coding behind. I would guess you can learn C# in a couple of months good enough to create a similar game. Wish you good luck!

Thank you! It's pretty straightforward with Unity ad module. Register which ads format you want at the Unity dashboard and some settings in the editor, there are some good tutorials out there

Ya bring back the skiers and add the skins and then add those pesky in app purchases for additional skins and new yetis that chase you or variance of different backgrounds and slopes to ski in for the unlocking.

The game is looking nice indeed, but i would suggest you to add a fps limiter to limit it to 60 because a lag may occur on devices that arent that good 😅

Pretty fun little game. Some weird screen tearing that was a little distracting.
This game seems to be more suitable for oortrait orientation as a mobile game

When the player stops pressing a button the character must smoothly correct his forward. It will increase the control feeling. At least add this feature as an option to test it out with current players.

Except for the $25 Google Play Store registration fee, there were no other costs for this game, only free assets

- bring back skiiers, rock is bad idea
- try portait instead (background not important) and see if it works
- tap left of screen to turn left, tap right to turn right. In another comment i suggested analogue control based on distance from centre but maybe thats too complicated for an ads based simple game.

Since it is a single action mobile game and the movement is vertical. You should have the game playable vertically like subways surfer

It is quite hard to make money in mobile too unfortunately. Most of the time what is most important is the to have budget to advertise the game, I've seen tretis like games with milions of downloads, but the devs were running payed adversiment with a huge budget.
