The EUB Is Real Personal story time: As a developer this was the moment where I finally had a lot of confidence in myself. I joined onto the crew quite late in development, so you won't see much of my work until Extra (aside from a ton of man hours fixing bugs...), but I had to work my way up from a tester to get there. Meeting Porygon and Tricky was one of the best things to ever happen to me, I'm so happy it happened. EUB is a product of its time in a lot of interesting ways. In both the sense that it's outdated technically and I probably wouldn't have written it in the same way that Porygon and Sturm did a decade ago. The music is from a group of now established composers but the tracks are quite old so I recommend not asking them about them - aside from Extra (Porygon really got her skills up by that point) I really hope Omega plays Tokiko. EDIT: WE WON!!!!!!!! TOKIKO FANS WIN TODAY!!!!!!!
Matenshi... I understood that reference. (It's a PC-98 midboss-only "character") ...Of which PC-98 Touhou had a lot of officially nameless midbosses. It's one of the honestly many ways in which EoSD arguably has more in common with PC-98 than the rest of the Windows games going forward.
The power you get in Discord mode is more than just a flat damage increase; the properties of your shottype change as well. Rin's unfocused shot completely transforms, going from a flowery spread to homing notes. Her focused shot produces a flowery explosion that'll hurt enemies close to your first target. Kasen's shots, both focused and unfocused, move faster. Her unfocused shot becomes straightforward, but without losing horizontal range compared to the standard version, thus improving her ability to attack nearby targets to her left and right (she still has the least different discord shot, though). Tokiko's unfocused shot spreads out even further, hitting the entire screen at full power. The circle of her focused shot expands, making it easier to catch enemies inside it.
This game's hella good. Lot of fun. Pretty challenging too on the higher difficulties though. The late game gets really harsh on those, the jump from each difficulty level is staggering. But I wouldn't say that's necessarily a bad thing. Also WOOOOO you're playing as Tokiko too, hell yeah. She's always been my main shot, and not just because she's a bird. (I hadn't even found that part of my identity yet when I first started playing this, anyway...) That said, something neat about this game is that I'd say every shot has its good and bad places, especially when taking Discord Mode into account. So no shot is truly the best, I wanna say. Tokiko also has the best dialogue in the game. I love unserious comedy type of dialogues. Her Extra is glorious. Don't got much to say about Stage 1 though. Just pretty easy stuff. 7:07 SoEW Stage 4 midboss. Lol. 7:19 mods, bust his kneecaps

AKA the game where we get to see all the lesser-used and forgotten characters shine :D 1:47 I think one of my favorite brands of Touhou dev humor is how everyone always puts a description saying you're *lunatic* for doing Lunatic mode. 4:07 Facepalm train 5:20 Unexpected but interesting pick, guess we Rinnosuke now - never mind. Tokiko hype train, let's gooo! 6:43 We finally found a use for the gameboys of Gensokyo
This game, to me, introduces the different sort of humour that the international devs have with their dialogue and story. Like, I'm so used to the Japanese and Chinese style of storywriting for Touhou fangames, so when I got this game on sale so many years ago, the way the characters are written stood out to me. Both this game and Sapphire Panlogism. Come to think of it, I only did a single playthrough, and shelved this game after that. I wonder why... Looking forward to the whole playthrough!
3:40 You say that, but it's pretty obvious from day 1 that Kasen is an oni. There's the fact that she's called a *horned* hermit, plus Suika has a Mysterious Past with her, and finally she's named after an oni from Japanese folklore whose most famous tale involves the loss of an arm.
I remember who Matenshi is but I never knew what name the fandom calls her so I still had to look her up 😵💫 If I were to have an obscure character come back, gimme the unnamed Kitsune who disguises herself as Marisa from WaHH
I know EXTREMELY little about Kasen besides what I saw of her in Touhou 14.5 and in TPDP of all places I do know she's an oni, I know she preaches at Reimu, and I know she's one of the sages So when I saw her appear in this game I just thought, I dunno, maybe some sage or hermit or oni shenanigans? is why she somehow escaped the incident? Especially since I remember (don't quote me) one specific dialogue in her route about her escaping the effect of the incident too, and about how one fairy didn't get to become strong because of her So, I dunno, it still kinda works for me Though the lack of Seija is still a shame, and probably the most unfortunate timing I've ever seen Still enjoyable game though Also, I forgot how massively this game jumps through difficulties Lunatic Stage 4 is almost impossible to do no bomb in my opinion, and it gets worse from there F*** you final boss and Extra boss
You know, even at the time that the game came out, there were already rumors that Kasen was an oni, right? And the very idea of an oni being a "weakling" is either laughable or facepalm-inducing (as in, the big facepalm crowd from Naked Gun). Also, in this game, she fights by *HURLING ROCKS* which is something very oni-like.
I'm surprised you consider this one of the easier fangames. Even with the balance patch this game got I would consider it one of the harder ones out there. Mainly because unlike most fangames it doesn't just throw tons of free resources at you. You can get lots of lives with the discord mechanic but you have to endure noticeably harder patterns to do so. Compared to most fangames I've played where I can get hit and bomb all the time but still reach the final boss with nearly max resources somehow. Anyway I love this game, easily my favorite fangame. In most Touhou games I've played (official or fangame) the stages tend to be extremely boring because there isn't really much to do in them and enemies usually aren't threatening. EUB is one of those games that has fun stages, because it has a mechanic that makes stages dynamic and engaging, like UFO, DDC and LoLK. You want to mess around and find what parts of the game you can consistently survive on a higher difficulty. And since Discord has an entry cost, you also want to make sure you aren't wasting it on short sections or parts you are unsure about doing, because otherwise you might not end up with enough to enter it when you want it again. And if you are still at a skill level where you want every bomb you can get to a clear, you have to be constantly ready to exit Discord or bomb before you get hit in Discord and waste 2 bombs to it's autobomb system. (Which very quickly adds up with how much time you can spend in Discord mode) And if that's not enough, you can also plan around using the bullet cancel on entering Discord to help get through harder patterns in exchange for giving up life pieces, or decide on whenever you want to save for the easier Encore spell version or not. In short it's a great system!
Well, I planned on going over it more in my final thoughts, but just look at my history against Futo's spell card and I think you can guess the main reason why I consider it one of the easiest fangames I've ever played. 06/07. Meaning it only took me _seven_ attempts to beat this game. While that's not the easiest time I've had (I'm pretty sure that prize will forever go to FDF2 and it's 3 attempts to beat it) it's still _definitely_ up there. Like, cards on the table. On my first, _blind_ attempt, I managed to no-bomb, no-discord make it to the final boss on my _first_ attempt. And I donno, I still think this game gives you plenty of resources (especially with all the enemies that drop life pieces, and the life pieces you get from Encore Spells). Like, little bit of spoiler for the future, but I managed to reach max lives in this game _without_ using Discord mode to get even more. All honesty, I don't have my full thoughts together on what all I think about Discord mode. It's definitely very _interesting_ and is definitely a great addition... But in all honesty, it almost kinda feels like a _trap_ in a way. Don't take this comment as gospel, cause I honestly need to crunch some numbers and actually play around with Discord a bit more to really tell what I think about it, but it's a very indirect resource system, that I'm not 100% sure just how much you can really get out of it, just that I never felt like I was put in a situation where I felt I _needed_ to get anything out of it. Truth be told, the game feels balanced _without_ Discord in mind, and I feel Discord is more of an addition to that experience. Now whether or not that experience is actually making your life easier or harder is another story. Cause it definitely _does_ feel that overly relying on Discord may actually make your life _harder_ for the sake of diminishing returns. Edit* Side note. If it's a game where resources are tied to your score, then that's definitely a case where you can "die and bomb and still reach the final boss with max resources". However, I'm not sure if I'd call that an "easier" game, so much as I'd call that an "exploitable" game. For example, that is _aggressively_ an aspect of pre-patch Len'en 1. I remember seeing some _disgusting_ stuff you could pull off with Yabusame's bombs (like, straight up getting 3+ lives just from bombing through Aoji's spells). However, despite that I'd never call that an easy fangame because of how off the walls a lot of the early patterns are.
@@MegamanOmega184 I feel like the ease at which you beat the game has more to do with your skill than the game being easy. You have definitely beaten way harder things than any games's Normal mode by this point, so it makes sense it wouldn't be too difficult. Especially when trading resources you don't need at your skill level for a less difficult experience. But I think a Normal skill level player wouldn't have such an easy time with it since they would be a lot more reliant on getting those extra live pieces to get further into a run. And that in turn would also make the game even more challenging at certain areas. Especially since for a Normal player, a life isn't just 1 extra hit, it's also 3 extra bombs.(Assuming no bomb gets wasted) And also an average player will have an easier time with other fangames because they tend to have special mechanics that make you invincible, let you take a free hit, spam bullet clears, etc. Compared to Discord mode that makes the game harder. For example Servants of Harvest Wish let's you use a free bullet clearing bomb every time you enter Harvest mode in exchange for ending it. And entering Harvest mode is something you will do constantly. Or well that's just my opinion. This is the only only fangame I had to work for to clear on Normal back in the day, compared to every other fangame that I cleared first try (with bombs and everything). And I think the only other 2 fangames that took me a decent amount of attempt to clear on Normal were Sapphire Panlogism and Dream Logical World.
@@LushieTilde Maybe... Biggest thing is I don't feel like my skill level in my most recent games has changed _that_ much. If anything I really feel like I've gotten _worse_ especially with how out of practice I was (and to a degree, still am). I had practically a year of health issues where I wasn't playing _anything_ after beating almost all of SoHW, which made my skills up to that day practically atrophy. And between then and now I've played a non-shmup when I did SFW, and the shmups I did play were oddball ones that demanded a different skillset out of me with 100BM & UDoALG (especially notable with the latter, since I could keep face tanking anything, and every time I got hit, just replenish my shield no problem with a Lv3 charge) I really just don't feel like this game had the same "bite" of difficulty other games did. Part of that could be my skills increasing as time's gone on. But at the same time, refreshing my memory with various games, I can _definitely_ say that bullet density for stages and spells is _way_ down in this game compared to most.
I think it's an open-source sound effect. The same SFX is absolutely used in Orange Juice's shmups like the Suguri/Sora games, for example. It's also used in Return to Jabberwock.
